2 mean green storylines The Mean Green plays its first Friday night game at home this season when it faces Lamar on Sept. 11 on 7 p.m. The Mean Green is 1-1 at home this season. The Mean Green travels the short distance to Fort Worth to play TCU on Sunday in a night game. North Texas lost to TCU, 1-0, at home last year but defeated TCU at their place in Jackie Kerestine was named Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 8 for her two shutout performances against Abilene Christian and Houston. She also eclipsed the 300-career-save mark at North Texas, becoming the first goalkeeper to accomplish that feat. Rachel Holden has scored goals in the last three games. She scored one goal against Abilene Christian and two against Houston last weekend. It was the first time she has posted a multi-goal game since her freshman year when she had two hat tricks. Karla Pineda has dished out an assist in the last two games. She crossed in a ball against Houston that found Rachel Holden s head for the third goal of the game. She leads the team with four assists. Two of them are off set pieces. Karla Pineda converted her fourth career penalty kick against Abilene Christian. She moved into sole possession of fourth place on the career penalty kicks made list. This was her first made PK of the season. The Mean Green started off the 2015 season by winning its first two games and capturing the Las Vegas Invitational Tournament. Rachel Holden, Olivia Bagby and Jackie Kerestine were all named to the all-tournament team. Kerestine was also named the tournament s Most Outstanding Defensive Player and the overall MVP. Olivia Bagby scored the Mean Green s first goal of the 2015 season. She came off the bench against Southern Utah and gave North Texas an early 1-0 lead off an assist by freshman Taylor Torres. Jackie Kerestine was named Conference USA s Goalkeeper of the Week on Aug 24. She made six saves and posted one shutout in two games. She gave up a penalty kick in the first game but had a clean slate the rest of the way. Kerestine was named Defensive Player of the Week four times last year and was the first recipient of the new goalkeeper of the week award. Jackie Kerestine was named to the TopDrawer- Soccer.com s Team of the Week as an honorable mention on Aug. 24. Following its 2-0 start, North Texas was rewarded in the polls. The Mean Green received nine votes in the NSCAA/Continental Tire National Poll on Aug. 25. The team received votes seven times last season and five consecutive weeks in a stretch. North Texas was also ranked No. 3 in the Central Region. The Mean Green is bringing most of its squad back from a 2014 record-breaking season, when the team tied a program record with 16 wins, set a single-season record with 14 shutouts and claimed its ninth conference championship with the regular-season title. Three North Texas soccer players were named to the preseason All-Conference USA team. Senior goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine, senior midfielder Karla Pineda and junior forward Rachel Holden were all selected by the league s coaches for the preseason team. This is the second-straight year that Holden has been honored and the second time in Kerestine s career that she has been voted to the team. Kerestine was the only goalkeeper to make the list. Pineda is making her debut on the preseason team. North Texas was selected to finish second in Conference USA after finishing as runner-up in the conference tournament last year. The Mean Green won the regular-season title in Rice took the top spot after winning the conference tournament. North Texas is receiving national attention. The Mean Green received votes in the NSCAA/Continental Tire National Preseason Poll. It received votes seven times last season and five consecutive weeks in a stretch. After a breakout junior season, Karla Pineda was ranked in TopDrawerSoccer s Preseason Top 100 Players. Pineda led the team in goals, assists and points last year and was named first-team allconference and second-team all-region. In the history of the Mean Green soccer program, North Texas advanced to its third straight conference finals last year in the combined two leagues (Sun Belt and Conference USA). All together, North Texas has advanced to 10 finals appearances. North Texas won the Conference USA regular season title outright in It was the program s ninth conference championship and sixth regular season title. It was the Mean Green s first conference championship in Conference USA. North Texas went 5-0 last year in Denton and extended its home winning streak against conference opponents to 49 games, which is the second longest in the nation. The Mean Green has not lost a home conference game since Oct. 31 of North Texas finished its regular season with a home record of 8-3. The Mean Green s overall home record in program history is and at the Mean Green Soccer Complex. Since the program s birth in 1995, the Mean Green has never had a losing season. North Texas 20-year combined record stands at a.703 winning percentage. The ultimate goal of the program, North Texas has advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times , 2005 and Only five Division I schools in the state of Texas (of 20) have more NCAA Tournament appearances. In C-USA, only Charlotte has more tourney bids. mean green quick shots North Texas is 4-0 in the series against Lamar. The Mean Green defeated Lamar, 1-0, last year on the road. North Texas is 1-4 against TCU with the last win coming in 2013 in Fort Worth. North Texas has won 5 of its first 6 games of the season in six of the last nine years. The Mean Green has started its season with a 3-0 record on the road. North Texas scores 3 goals for the second consecutive game. NT also scores two first-half goals for the second straight game. The three goals is a season high. Taylor Torres scored her second career goal and her second career assist against Houston. She is tied for second on the team with six points. Karla Pineda leads the team with four assists. Two of them are off set pieces. Rachel Holden has scored at least one goal in the last three games. Brooke Bradley made her first appearance in goal this season when she played seven minutes against Abilene Christian. Carissa Sanders made her first two career starts against Abilene Christian and Houston. North Texas lost its home opener for the first time in school history. The Mean Green tied Oral Roberts to open the 2012 season at home. North Texas is now 0-3 against Big 12 opponents in the last two years. The Mean Green plays TCU on Sept. 13. North Texas is bringing back 10 starters from last year s record-breaking season. North Texas has added 10 newcomers to its roster: 9 freshmen and 1 junior transfer.
