Anaheim Ducks Ducks goalies Jonas Hiller and Viktor Fasth have a friendly rivalry Lance Pugmire October 20, 2013 As much as Jonas Hiller and Viktor Fasth keep things friendly sitting next to each other in the Ducks' dressing room, each goaltender works fervently on the ice to take away the other's playing time. Last season, Fasth, in his rookie campaign, matched Hiller's regular-season victory total (15) and was given the nod to start the season opener. If Hiller felt his job security threatened after playing in 73 of 82 games in , he was right. But after the announcement Friday that Fasth had suffered a lower-body injury, Hiller stiffened to stop Phoenix's Shane Doan on a final shootout try to secure the Ducks' sixth consecutive victory, 3-2. Fasth's injury will keep him out of Sunday's game at Honda Center against the Dallas Stars. The victory Friday makes Hiller 4-0 with a 1.45 goals-against average that is second-best in the NHL among starting goalies and a.954 save percentage that is No. 1 among starters. "Definitely, you want to play and all I can do when I get the chance to play [is] play as well as I can," Hiller said recently. After giving up three goals in a victory at Minnesota in his first start, Hiller stopped all 34 shots in the Ducks' 6-0 victory over the New York Rangers on Oct. 10, and stopped 30 of 31 shots in beating Ottawa on Oct. 13. "I don't worry too much about the whole thing, but if I get the call, I try to play as good as I can and help the team," Hiller said. "Hopefully, that's good enough to play the next game." With Fasth declared out after beating Calgary on Wednesday, Hiller gave up only a shot six seconds after the Ducks had killed a penalty and another that glanced off Ducks defenseman Bryan Allen in front of him. "We try to support each other, but at the same time it's a competition between us," Hiller said. "If the team plays well, it's easier for both of us. If neither of us plays well, we're in the same boat. We try to help each other out. We know it's the success of the team that makes hockey fun. If you play and lose all the time, it's no fun." Tonight VS. DALLAS STARS When: 5 p.m. Where: Honda Center. On the Air: TV: Prime Ticket; Radio: 830. Record vs. Stars (2013): 3-2. Etc.: Dallas, which played Saturday night at the Kings, is in its last 11 games against the Ducks, with Jamie Benn contributing 14 points in 21 games against Anaheim. LA Times: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Ducks' Penner works way back into flock ERIC STEPHENS :55:17 ANAHEIM From a healthy scratch to the top line, Dustin Penner has experienced both extremes and everything in between. A bad training camp and a seat in the press box on opening night sent a strong message to Penner. The winger wasn t in the kind of peak condition the Ducks were expecting after signing him to a free-agent contract. Three weeks into the season, the Ducks big power forward is starting to give them what they wanted. Penner is back playing with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry and scoring. An example of how far Penner has come took place Wednesday night when he rushed to the front of the net with defenseman Sami Vatanen and beat Calgary s Lee Stempniak to a place where he could bang in Getzlaf s centering pass for a goal. Could Penner have gotten to that spot two weeks ago? No, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. It s my guess. He did then. Said Getzlaf: No. He s almost there, Boudreau said. He s worked really hard. I give him total credit for (that). At the beginning, I give him total blame. Since training camp has started he s been a great soldier doing whatever we wanted him to do to get to where we think he can be a real good player. He s getting closer. Penner missed another game because of a hip flexor injury but he has two goals in the four that he played before Friday night s game against Phoenix. It might not seem like much, but it carries a lot of significance when you look at his season. A chief reason the Kings allowed Penner to walk as a free agent is his inconsistent play and lack of production just two goals in 33 games. Now he is well ahead of the pace in his return to Anaheim. And his goal against the Flames triggered memories of what the trio did when they first came up to the Ducks together before Penner left in the summer of I think the happiness you see when Getzy, Pears or myself score, it s pretty genuine, Penner said. Not to say other teams don t have that. But whatever it is, we really like scoring goals and doing it together. It was clear the Ducks had to prod Penner in the early going. That has been the pattern during his stops in Anaheim, Edmonton and Los Angeles. But the winger welcomes it instead of rebelling against coaches. Randy Carlyle rode him as a youngster but often got the most out of him. There was an oil-and-water relationship with Craig MacTavish before Penner responded under Pat Quinn and flourished in the playoffs under Darryl Sutter s tough-love approach. I ve dealt with it my whole career, Penner said, different methods of pushing me. Obviously that s my reputation, but I wouldn t be here today if I didn t push myself. I didn t have an easy path to get here. Being with Getzy and Pears, the rapport we have as friends and teammates, we re always pushing each other. You want to maybe subconsciously one-up the other but not in a way that s selfish. Getzlaf is happy to see Penner kick into gear and knows he can get on him if he slips back out. Dustin s playing well, he said. He s put his work in now. Obviously at the start of the year, he wasn t ready to play and he knows that as much as everybody else. He s put his work in now and we re just excited to get going now. Said Penner: I m not where I want to be yet. But I m definitely on the right track. FASTH HURT Viktor Fasth was not available against Phoenix because of a lower-body issue that occurred during Thursday s practice. The Ducks recalled Frederik Andersen from Norfolk (AHL) to back up Jonas Hiller. Boudreau said Fasth s injury isn t serious and called the move precautionary. We've got so many games coming up, the last thing we need is somebody to get hurt bad and miss... if you miss a month, you're missing 19 games from here on. Fasth turned in a strong performance Wednesday against Calgary with 33 saves in a 3-2 victory. Orange County Register: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Ducks want one for the road ERIC STEPHENS :02:36 ANAHEIM Four down, one to go. The Ducks have won six of their first seven games for the first time in franchise history, and they have the chance to pack some good feelings with them for their two-week eastern sojourn by sweeping their five-game homestand. Standing in their way is a Dallas Stars team refreshed with new uniforms, a new coach in Lindy Ruff and a new top-line center in Tyler Seguin. The Stars visit Honda Center on Sunday night after playing the Kings at Staples Center on Saturday. Seguin had three goals and five assists in his first six games after being acquired from Boston in a six-player trade that sent away longtime winger Loui Eriksson. I think they got markedly better, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. Seguin looks like he s playing really well. Alex Chiasson, who we saw last year at the end, scored two goals and then got hurt in the game against us, he s averaging a point a game. I ve always thought Jamie Benn was one of the best players in the league. They pose a lot of problems. Boudreau knows plenty about the Stars in his third season with the Ducks and he is plenty familiar with Ruff dating to their days in the Eastern Conference when Ruff was behind the Buffalo bench and Boudreau was with Washington. There is only a limited amount of video that Boudreau has of Ruff in his short time with the Stars so the Ducks coach is looking back at a lot of tapes he has of the Sabres. Some things are immediately noticeable. It was the defense-first mentality, Boudreau said. But he really adjusted well. I thought he was a really brilliant coach in that he would adjust to things we did on the fly. I thought that takes a lot of intelligence. It s tough to do. The Ducks have won six games in a row eight times, most recently last season. A win Sunday ties the franchise mark of seven straight, which was done in Their most recent win was a hard-fought 3-2 shootout decision over Phoenix. Nick Bonino s goal with 2:02 left in regulation rekindled Images of last season when they often rallied from late-game deficits. It s carried over from last year, Bonino said. Obviously you want games like the Rangers game or the Ottawa game where you control the whole thing. More often than not, the games are going to come down to the wire. If you re behind, you ve got to be able to come back. We ve showed some resiliency as a group last year and the beginning of this year. And we re going to need that going forward. FASTH STILL OUT Viktor Fasth s lower-body ailment is going to keep him unavailable for a second straight game. Fasth was not able to practice but Boudreau reported there is improvement. It means Jonas Hiller will make another start in goal against the Stars with Frederik Andersen backing up. He s still day to day, Boudreau said about Fasth. He s feeling a lot better today than he did yesterday. But what that means, I don t really know. Fasth is expected to be with the Ducks on the trip. HOT PENALTY KILLERS The Ducks penalty killing has righted itself as they erased all 13 disadvantages the past four games. Boudreau said Hiller has played a big role in the recent success. But the unit has also been strengthened by the presence of winger Emerson Etem. The team gave up five power-play goals in the three games he missed to open the season but none since he returned from a preseason injury. He brings a lot of energy, Boudreau said. He usually goes on second in the penalty kill. And he can skate and run down pucks. He adds another penalty killer to our depth machine and that s good. Orange County Register: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Ducks look to continue their roll tonight against Dallas 10/19/13, 10:45 PM PDT Elliott Teaford DUCKS vs. DALLAS Faceoff: 5 p.m., today, Honda Center TV/Radio: Prime, 830 AM Update: The Ducks rallied for a 3-2 shootout victory Friday over the Phoenix Coyotes for their sixth consecutive victory after their opening-night loss to the Colorado Avalanche. They also won their fourth in a row at the Honda Center to start their five-game homestand. They have 12 points in seven games for only the second time in the franchise s 20-year history, equaling their start during their Stanley Cup championship season of Goaltender Jonas Hiller is with a 1.45 GAA and a.954 save percentage. After tonight s game, the Ducks begin an eight-game trip Tuesday against the Maple Leafs in Toronto. Dallas was going into Saturday s game against the Kings at Staples Center. This will be the first meeting between the teams since the Stars were shifted to the Central Division in the NHL s realignment during the offseason. LA Daily News: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Ducks prevail in a shootout Joe Resnick 10/19/13, 12:18 AM PDT ANAHEIM >> An ugly goal by Nick Bonino helped the Ducks overcome the defensive-minded Phoenix Coyotes on a night when their ragged power play continued to struggle. Bonino scored the tying goal with 2:02 left in the third period, Jakob Silfverberg scored the deciding goal in the sixth round of the shootout, and Jonas Hiller made 30 saves to lead the Ducks to a 3-2 victory over the Coyotes on Friday night. The defending Pacific Division champions are off to their best start in franchise history, winning six straight following a 6-1 loss at Colorado on opening night. It s also the first time the club has started 4-0 at home. Last year we found ways to win no matter how we played, so it s familiar to us, Bonino said. I think everyone in here will agree that the last two games haven t our best games or our sharpest games, but winning teams find ways to win no matter how ugly it is. Rostislav Klesla got his first goal of the season, Antoine Vermette also scored and Mike Smith made 37 saves for the Coyotes. We were scared to win. That is not how you finish off hockey games, Smith said. We were solid up until the third period, then we went out in the third and had six shots and let them come. When you give that team the chances that we gave them, sooner or later it s going to get the back of the net. The Ducks were pressing for the equalizer in the Coyotes zone when Bonino threw the puck toward the net from the right point, and teammate Dustin Penner ducked his head in the low slot as it drifted past Smith s stick. When they got the lead, they shut us down pretty good. But we continued to fight, coach Bruce Boudreau said. This is what this group did all last year going into the third. We haven t had to do it this year until tonight, but we know they re capable of doing it. Even though it was a fluky goal, or whatever, they did it. It says that we ve got character and don t want to quit. LA Daily News: LOADED:

Boston Bruins Game 7: Bruins at Lightning Amalie Benjamin October 19, :46 PM Is he in or not? While Claude Julien said on Friday that there was a "good chance" that Carl Soderberg would play against the Lightning, the coach declined to share his lines before the game. So it's still a question of whether Soderberg will be in, which would necessitate sitting another one of his forwards. The two most likely to find themselves in the press box tonight, should Julien put Soderberg in, would be Jordan Caron and Brad Marchand, though it might be a bit early for Julien to take Marchand out despite his middling performance over the early part of the season. Soderberg would be a boon in one area for the Bruins -- net-front presence. It's something that the team has discussed that it needs to improve, and it's a place where Soderberg proved adept at scoring in Sweden. It'll be especially important tonight against a hot Lightning team that has lost only once since falling to the Bruins in the first game of the season. Big goalie Ben Bishop and his 1.57 goals against average has been a major reason for the team's good start, and creating traffic around him would be a help for the B's. Game time: 7 p.m. TV/Radio: NESN/98.5 The Sports Hub Records: Bruins 4-2-0, Lightning Projected lineups: Lucic-Krejci-Iginla Smith-Bergeron-Eriksson Marchand-Kelly-Caron/Soderberg Paille-Campbell-Thornton With the defensive rotation still going strong for the Bruins (and an optional skate this morning), it's unclear which player will be the healthy scratch on the defensive side. Tuukka Rask Notes: Tampa Bay goalie Ben Bishop hasn't allowed more than two goals in any of his starts, and has won all five of them so far this season.... The Bruins won the first meeting between the teams, 3-1, on the strength of two short-handed goals in the season opener.... Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos lead the Lightning with 10 points each. No Bruin has more than five. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Winger took wing October 20, 2013 Stephen Harris We recently checked in with a guy who was one of our all-time favorite Bruins even if he did spend far too little time in Black & Gold. Longtime Bruins fans will fondly remember Al Secord, who played only two-plus seasons with the B s at the start of the 1980s (166 games, totaling ; 337 PIM) before being traded to Chicago for defenseman Mike O Connell. For folks who don t recall Secord, well, suffice to say he was cut from the same mold as Cam Neely capable of scoring 50 goals (he had 54 in skating the left side on a great Blackhawks line with Denis Savard and Steve Larmer) and also a very capable and willing southpaw fighter. Like Neely and so many more of the truly tough guys of that era, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Secord looked like he really enjoyed dropping the gloves usually fighting with a sinister grin on his face. But what makes Secord most interesting were not his 273 career goals or 165-or-so pro fights, but what he has done after his career ended in Secord turned to his second love, aviation, and became a Dallas-based airline pilot for American Airlines. I started flying when I was playing in Chicago in the mid 80s, Secord said. I got my private licence. I was basically just a summertime, clear weather flyer until I retired in the mid- 90s. I took six months off to let my body heal from all the beating I took as a hockey player, and I got my (pilot) ratings in both Canada and United states. I flew cargo out of Philadelphia for 11 2 years, and then I flew for a commuter company called Great Lakes, a United Express carrier. And now I ve been with American Airlines for 15 years. Secord currently pilots the medium-range DC-9 Super-80 airliners. He described a recent day on which he flew from Memphis, to Dallas, to Nashville, back to Dallas, and then to Boston. A long day, he said. But I love it. Flying is still thrilling for me. Secord s interest in aviation began when he was a youngster working as a firefighter in the woods of Ontario. I always thought the guys who flew in and did the water bombing, and used to fly us in and out of the fire zones on old Beavers and Otters, had a really cool job, he said. I wanted to do the same thing. He remembers his time in Boston fondly. I played with some pretty good fellows, said Secord. Ray Bourque and I were roommates. Brad McCrimmon, Dwight Foster, Jim Pettie, Brad Park, Gerry Cheevers, Terry O Reilly, John Wensink, Wayne Cashman, just a great group of guys. Coming to the Bruins at 20 years old, I was just in awe. It was an older group and they took care of the younger guys. I tried to remember that later in my career when the younger guys came in; make sure they had a good experience their first year. Secord was a guy who loved hockey and went on to a second act in his life that he loves just as much. This week s B s timeline Wednesday at Buffalo, 8:05 p.m. The Bruins open a stretch of three games in four days with this visit to Buffalo. The Sabres are off to another rough start: After opening the season 0-6-1, they got their first win in a shootout vs. the Islanders Tuesday. Goalie Ryan Miller, who hopes to be Team USA s Olympic starter, is playing well, but not getting much help. The Sabres always play the B s tough, winning 3-of-5 games last season. Thursday vs. San Jose, 7:05 p.m. This will be one of the most interesting matches all season at the Garden, and one of the B s toughest tests. The Sharks have been tremendous, led by 19-year-old Czech phenom Tomas Hertl who capped a four-goal night Oct. 8 with that sick, between-the-legs, far-side forehander against the Rangers. The annually-underachieving Sharks appear to be a Cup-favorite, adding Hertl and ex-bu star Matt Nieto to a group featuring Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, Logan Couture, Brett Burns, Joe Pavelski and more. Saturday vs. New Jersey, 7:05 p.m. Subtract gritty talent David Clarkson (gone to Toronto) and add 41-year-old Jaromir Jagr. That s not a winning formula. Winless in their first six games (0-3-3) for the first time in club history, the Devils have had a hard time protecting third-period leads. Ex-BC goalie Cory Schneider has been splitting time with 41-year-old Martin Brodeur. Old friend Michael Ryder was signed from Dallas. The Bruins went vs. the Devils. last season, with two one-goal wins and one via shootout. PANDOLFO SIGNS OFF Unlike so many pro athletes, Jay Pandolfo knew when to go. The Burlington and Boston University product, who was a good soldier for the Bruins last season despite seeing little playing time (18 games; totals) walked away from the game with no uncertainty or regrets. I m done, said Pandolfo, who was on hand at a B s game last week. I haven t officially filed papers yet, but I m done. I didn t try to (find a job). I didn t even work out this summer with an eye toward possibly playing. I decided at the end of last year that that was it. A great BU player ( in 40 games his senior year), Pandolfo, 38, was a spare part for the B s, but an outstanding defensive forward during his 13 seasons with the New Jersey Devils. He finished with 899 games, and totals. He loved the fact that he could close his career in his hometown. I had a great career and to finish in Boston was an fantastic experience for me, he said. I never expected that and I really enjoyed it here. It would have been great if we could have won two more game (and the Cup). He doesn t know what comes next for him but he s a guy who d make a good coach either in the pro or college ranks. I m not sure yet what I m going to do, said Pandolfo. I m going to take a little time, spend time with the family, and then I ll see what kind of opportunities come along. Coaching is definitely a possibility, but it s not something I m ready to jump into right away. I ve talked to a couple of pro teams, but I just wasn t ready. THE LIFE OF REILLY... First-year Bruins winger Reilly Smith said he opted to play at Miami (Ohio) instead of in the OHL, because his family puts great value in education. He has three years completed toward a degree in sports management he is aiming toward a post-hockey career as an agent and is determined to get the needed credits at summer school or online. It s tough to get back into the classroom after you ve been playing professionally, especially when you re not really forced to do it, said Smith. But it absolutely is my goal to graduate. His view on which is better, a strong major junior team or top college squad? It s tough to say, said Smith. I d say major junior teams probably have players who are more skilled. But there are a lot older guys in college. So it really depends on the teams. It s kind of different hockey, too. But I think they re pretty even. Boston Herald LOADED:

Boston Bruins Bruins rout Lightning, 5-0 October 19, 2013 Steve Conroy TAMPA, Fla.--The Bruins finally got the complete victory for which they were searching Saturday night at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. The B's got a goal from each of the forwrd lines and one from a defensemen to blow out the Lightning 5-0. David Krejci, Adam McQuaid, Patrice Bergeron, Chris Kelly adn Shawn Thornton all scred while Tuukka Rask posted the 23 save shutout. Coach claude Julien was happy that the B's succeeded in all the areas that he'd been stressing the last few days. Much better, said Julien. We had a good start obviously, but we scored the goals the way we wanted to score them. Net drive on David's. Net front presence from (Jarome Iginla on McQuaid's goal), middle drive from Loui (Eriksson) on Bergy's goal. You've seen us work on our cycle game the last couple of practices and Kelly's goal was indicative of that. Offensively, it was nice to see us score some goals, but I thought the pace and tempo of our game was good tonight, too. The B's don't play again until Wednesday in Buffalo. Boston Herald LOADED:

Boston Bruins Soderberg still a question mark for tonight October 19, 2013 Steve Conroy TAMPA, Fla.--If Claude Julien had made a decision on whether Carl Soderberg would make his season debut tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning, then he wasn't letting on. He did said, however, that if Soderberg does go into the lineup that it will be a difficult to choose the forward who would have to sit. Brad Marchand has been struggling, but he didn't take any extra skating this morning so it wold probably not be him. Jordan Caron returned to the ice for the morning skate, but missed practice on Friday when he was given a "maintenance day." Julien could give Caron the night off and put back together that Soderberg-Chris Kelly-Reilly Smith line that had looked so good in the preseason and then put Marchand back with Patrice Bergeron and Loui Eriksson. Another possibility would be to put Soderberg on the fourth line, with maybe Shawn Thornton coming out of the lineup. Then again, the fourth line just produced its first goal of the year in the Bruins' 3-2 win over Florida on Thursday. Whoever skates for the B's, they'll be facing a Lightning team that appear to be more sound than last year's version that started strong only to fizzle, costing Guy Boucher the coaching job. Under Jon Cooper, the Bolts appear to playing better in front of both nets. The B's beat them in the opener, but it wasn't an easy win and the Lightning have lost only once since then. "They're a different team with the coahcing and they brought in some new players, they're young players are getting better and we're not just talking about (Steven) Stamkos here.. Right now they're healthy and I'm not surprised that they're off to a strong start. I think offensively they've always been good. Defensively, they've got a goaltender (Ben Bishop) who is playing extremely well and in the D-zone man-on-man they're really good on it. I think that explains a little bit of their success," said Julien. Puck drop is just after 7 p.m. Boston Herald LOADED:

Buffalo Sabres Zadorov shines in his NHL debut with Sabres Mike Harrington October 20, :20 AM The brightest spot from another dreary Sabres defeat was easy to find Saturday in First Niagara Center. Nikita Zadorov, the 18-year-old defenseman taken with the second of Buffalo s pair of first-round picks in June, made a strong NHL debut in the 4-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche. Zadorov played 11 minutes, 1 second, had no turnovers and led what was a seven-man defense corps with three hits. Zadorov, who suffered a sliced pinky in the final preseason game, was added to the roster two hours before the contest as fellow first-rounder Rasmus Ristolainen was sent to Rochester. Zadorov played as confidently as he did in the exhibition schedule, even though he admitted the pace of play with an opposing lineup full of veterans was much different. I m never nervous before the game, Zadorov said. It s my life to play hockey. Why be nervous if I like it? I did a pretty good job in the preseason games and the coaches saw that. I think they think I m ready to go. The Sabres can give Zadorov nine games before his entry-level contract kicks in. They could still send him back to London of the OHL, but coach Ron Rolston said Zadorov will get more action in future games before any decision is made. Zadorov said he did not know what the Sabres have planned for him. It s a question for coaches. They told me to play hard every shift, he said. They just keep giving me more and more time. It s the first NHL game for me. It s a new life for me. I feel comfortable. It s my game and I like to play hockey. With Zadorov dressing, the Sabres have become the first NHL team in 18 years to dress four teenagers in a season (Zadorov, Ristolainen, Zemgus Girgensons, Mikhail Grigorenko). In the season, the Sabres, Winnipeg and Florida all dressed at least four. The Sabres in that season had Jay McKee, Martin Biron, Wayne Primeau, Vaclav Varada and Curtis Brown. Ristolainen s demotion could be a paper move, with the Sabres figuring out what to do on defense before they play Boston on Wednesday. Ristolainen did not go to Rochester Saturday as he was spotted leaving the building after the Sabres defeat was completed and the scratched/injured players were dismissed.... The Avalanche were one of the worst teams in the NHL last year under Joe Sacco, now an assistant on the Sabres bench. At 7-1, they re one of the best in the early going this year under new coach Patrick Roy, the Hall of Fame goaltender and former Stanley Cup champion with both the Avalanche and Montreal. They ve been extremely receptive to the teaching we ve done so far, Roy said. I love the intensity and energy that we have on the ice. I love how we play on our tracking, our backchecking. Everybody is committed to it. I love the commitment of our players since the first day of training camp. I could draw a list of things I love about my team right now. It s fun to see how committed we are. The Avs won their first six games, allowing Roy to tie former Montreal teammate Mario Tremblay for the best start for a rookie head coach. They have allowed a Western Conference-low 12 goals and became the first team in NHL history to begin a season with five straight wins while allowing no more than one goal in each game. Roy, of course, was the junior coach for Grigorenko in Quebec and admitted he s as baffled as everyone in Buffalo about the 19-year-old center s lack of production. Grigorenko is pointless in eight games this year and has one goal in 32 career NHL appearances. The area that we were trying to work hard with Grigo was the compete level, Roy said. In my opinion, he was losing too many battles. At times Grigo thought he was working hard but in watching the clips he was not. Obviously we were trying to break that down. That s all I can say. I can t make comments for what happened in Buff. I can make the comments for what happened in Quebec.... Girgensons returned to the lineup after missing one game when he was struck near the eye by a puck Tuesday on Long Island. Cody McCormick sat out after taking a slapshot to the foot Thursday against Vancouver and Kevin Porter was a healthy scratch. The Sabres are against the Avalanche since they moved from Quebec in The teams meet again Feb. 1 in Denver, making this the first time since that they ve met twice. Buffalo News LOADED:

Buffalo Sabres Inside the NHL by John Vogl: Use of Grigorenko continues to be a hot topic October 20, 2013 at 1:34 AM John Vogl Upon hearing Mikhail Grigorenko would be a healthy scratch again last Tuesday, Sabres fans were furious. Every time Grigorenko or Johan Larsson sits for John Scott or Cody McCormick, people should be fired, said one message. Grigorenko played the next game, but it hardly appeased the fan base because the former first-round pick skated between Scott and McCormick wingers who entered the meeting with Vancouver with one goal in 235 games. In what world does this makes sense? a reader asked. It s one of the biggest questions in Sabreland. The team and most of its backers are clearly at odds on how to handle Grigorenko. The arguments by both sides are easy to define: Fans If the team is rebuilding and losing, why not give one of the top offensive prospects in the organization a chance to gain experience with significant minutes on a scoring line? Sabres How can we give ice time to a guy who hasn t proved he deserves it, especially when other players appear to be trying harder? It s basically become a chicken-or-egg dilemma: How can a guy prove he can succeed if he s not put in position to succeed? For sure, I thought I would play first, second line, Grigorenko told The News. It s just the beginning of my career, and hopefully I ll get a chance to play on the first and second lines. I ll just earn it and make coach believe in me that I can play with those guys. The present setup certainly isn t working for the 19-year-old. He entered Saturday night s game against Colorado with only one goal and four assists in 32 NHL appearances. That s not what anyone expected from a junior star who put up 70 goals and 139 points in 92 games. It s a touchy subject because I haven t seen too many games, Colorado coach Patrick Roy, who had Grigorenko in Quebec, said Saturday. In the big picture, yes, I am surprised to see he has only one goal because he s got so much talent. Sabres coach Ron Rolston calls it a learning experience when young players are scratched. He says it s a chance for them to sit above the ice and see how the game is played. Grigorenko, who has been scratched nine times during his two seasons, has no doubt he learns more from playing than sitting. During the games, you ll always learn new situations, some new experiences, he said. From that, there s more and more learning. If you go in the corner and something happens that never happened before, it s a new experience and next time I will know already because I learned. Watching the games you learn some stuff, but you re probably not going to learn things I ve never heard of. You kind of know about this, but you see it again and again, and it just kind of makes me remember some stuff if you call it learning. Rolston s biggest complaint about Grigorenko, and the one that was echoed by Roy, is the center s lack of compete. Like many skilled players, Grigorenko appears to glide through games and practices. His lack of intensity infuriates observers inside the organization. I feel like I compete, Grigorenko said. I feel like for every player it s different. I compete. Some guys compete and it s hit everyone, good forecheck. For me, compete can be different things like good positioning or if I have the puck good passes. It s all part of the game. Obviously, I m not a grinder or anything, so for me compete is a little different, just when I have the puck make good passes and keep the puck and help the team by bringing my skills. General Manager Darcy Regier, who promised Grigorenko a roster spot before training camp, endorsed using the center in a fourth-line role last season. He said a teammate recognizes whether someone is gratuitously given something or has earned it, and you need to keep the team concept in place. Several Sabres, asked about Grigorenko on the condition of anonymity to get frank answers, agreed. One said teams improve only by having each player push to reach a higher line, and it would bug him if someone skated 19 minutes and didn t strive for it. Another can see Grigorenko s talent but noted hard work is a talent, too. The root of this ice-time dilemma is Regier s decision to keep Grigorenko in Buffalo last season. The Sabres had a nine-game tryout to determine if the teenager should stay in the NHL or return to Quebec. In Grigorenko s nine games, he had one goal, one assist, a minus-5 rating and skated more than 13 minutes just twice. Regier kept him, starting the clock on Grigorenko s three-year contract. The second year would wastefully burn away if Buffalo sent him to Quebec now. So as it stands, the Sabres are stuck. Frankly, there s little reason not to at least try Grigorenko with skilled players. The guys on the top lines combined for a measly 10 goals in the opening nine games, so it s not like they deserve a chance any more than he does. You want to be on the ice, Grigorenko said. So far I m happy, but hopefully it s just get more ice time and show my skills, and to get some power-play time would be awesome. Not in a party mood For several years, the Sabres have been hosting Road Crew parties during select out-of-town trips. Alumni and team broadcasters head to a bar or restaurant, and fans can hang out with them for a $10 donation to the Sabres foundation. They ve been a success. The next two were supposed to be in San Jose and Los Angeles early next month. One big problem developed: Only a few dozen people planned to show up. The Sabres looked at the lackluster sales and canceled the events. It s not clear whether they picked cities that are short on Buffalo fans, or if few people want to party with an organization that s not fun at the moment. Fenton ready to be a GM Hockey people know the fans want Regier gone. Whether the team will ax him is another matter. Prominent folks are eager to see what happens. Nashville Assistant General Manager Paul Fenton is one of those keeping tabs, a source says. He s in his 16th season with the Predators, including his eighth as GM David Poile s right-hand man. Fenton appears ready to take over somewhere. In addition to overseeing the Predators scouting staff, the 53-year-old serves as general manager for the minor-league affiliate in Milwaukee. The Admirals have made the postseason 11 straight times, an American Hockey League record. Fenton has likely learned a lot from Poile. The Preds previous assistant GM was Ray Shero, now one of the NHL s best leaders in Pittsburgh. On the fly Like Thomas Vanek and Ryan Miller, Vancouver s Sedin twins are pending free agents. Daniel and Henrik get asked about it a lot less than Buffalo s duo. I ve said from Day One that we re not part of the negotiations, Henrik Sedin said. We re playing hockey. They re going to tell us when something is going on, but other than that I ve spent zero minutes thinking about it. That s not going to change. Steve Mason s record doesn t show it, but the Philadelphia goaltender appears to have found his game. After flopping in Columbus, Mason put up a 2.37 goals-against average and.923 save percentage in his first six games this season. He was just 1-5 playing for the hapless Flyers, though. The Blues are off until Friday, giving them seven days between games. They decided to head to Charleston, S.C., this weekend on a team-bonding trip. We obviously have to get work done there, GM Doug Armstrong said, but we want them to enjoy themselves.
