HOCKEY PREVIEW YOUTH WILL BE SERVED IN The Western Michigan University hockey team must look to its young nucleus to propel it towards success in The Bronco roster is fi lled with 14 underclassmen (six sophomores, eight freshmen) and 11 upperclassmen (four seniors, seven juniors). The Broncos must replace their two top scorers as Mark Letestu and Paul Szczechura both left for greener pastures. Letestu led the Broncos with 24 goals and added 22 assists for a team high 46 points. He was eventually named CCHA Rookie of the Year and signed a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. Szczechura capped off a solid career by scoring 19 goals and leading the team with 26 assists. After graduating, he signed a contract with the Dallas Stars organization and played for their farm team, the Iowa Stars. WMU also lost its top scoring defenseman, Ryan Mahrle. Marhle fi nished his career at WMU by scoring two goals and adding 15 assists. I think we are going to have to score by committee, said head coach Jim Culhane. I m not the type of coach that wants to put it on one or a couple of guys. For us to be successful it needs to be a real team effort and we are going to need contributions from everybody. Western Michigan looks to capitalize on momentum from last season. The Broncos won fi ve of their last six games to end the season before being upset by Alaska-Fairbanks in the PREVIEW LoVecchio is one of the best defensive forwards on the Bronco roster. Last year s co-captain also possesses great speed and agility for his size, standing 6-2. LoVecchio was honored for his offensive skills and was awarded the Royal Bank of Canada CCHA Player of the Month for January. He registered 14 points (8-6) in nine games, including two three-point (2-1, 1-2) performances against No. 6 Miami. I think we have some real key contributors there that will continue to take steps and strides and score for us and put numbers up for us offensively, said coach Culhane. Coming to mind right away, Pierce, Bicek, LoVecchio, and other returning guys, you look for them to improve to. Whether it is Dave Krisky, Chris Clackson or Cam Watson. Someone at those positions will score for us. 4 fi rst round of the CCHA Playoffs. FORWARDS Seniors Brian Bicek (15), Jeff Pierce (12), and junior Jeff LoVecchio (19) combined for 46 goals last season for the Broncos and will be looked upon to help shoulder some of the scoring load this season. Each player has their own set of strengths that compliment the team. Bicek is one of the fastest players on the team and in the CCHA and has the ability to stop on a dime. Pierce drastically improved his passing game last year, registering a career high 21 assists. Junior Patrick Galivan had a career year, scoring a career-high seven goals and adding a career high eight assists. Galvin developed a knack for scoring in big games against ranked opponents. Five of his seven goals and four of his eight assists came against teams ranked in the top-10. Despite the overall youth of the team Bicek, Pierce, LoVecchio, and Galivan are seasoned veterans, playing in a combined 321 games. Sean Weaver played in 16 games pitching in a goal and an assist, while Krisky added four points (1-3) in 18 games. Watson made his collegiate debut against Michigan State (10/13) and played in 11 games for the Broncos. Senior Mike Lesperance contributed fi ve points (2-3) on the season including the decisive goal in WMU s fi rst victory of the season against No. 3/4 Michigan State (10/15). Lesperance also pitched in the game-winner in an 8-5 victory over Ohio State (11/9). Junior winger Matt Clackson adds some defi nite toughness to the forwards and improved his passing game last season, pitching in a career-high eight assists. One of the assists came on a goal by his younger brother Chris. The last time two brothers connected on a goal for the Broncos was 34 years ago. Like his brother, Chris brings toughness to the WESTERN MICHIGAN HOCKEY MEDIA GUIDE

forward position but also contributed on the offensive side. He played in 30 of the Broncos 37 games, scoring three goals and adding four assists. As usual with coach Culhane, the line positions will be up for grabs during pre-season camp. You know, you play with it in your head, said Culhane. You get a scrap piece of paper and do that for a little bit. I try, personally, not to make those decisions. You want your guys to come back and earn those opportunities, to see the work they ve done over the spring and the summer and what type of camp they have in the fall. DEFENSEMEN When you talk about defense, it s everybody, explained Culhane. The system that we play is a team defense. It s backside pressure from the forwards, coming back and backchecking. Although the Brown & Gold lost a great defenseman in Mahrle, it returns eight defensemen. Nathan Ansell and Jonathan Lupa are the lone seniors on the blue line. Ansell played in 34 games for the Broncos, registering seven assists and a career-low seven penalties. Ansell is always willing to throw his body in front of the puck and it culminated in a game against No. 3 Notre Dame when he blocked three shots and also assisted on a goal en route to a win. Lupa played in his 100th career game against Lake Superior State on Feb. 23, fi nishing the season with 103 career games played. He fi nished the season with three assists, recording one during a CCHA Playoff win over Alaska PREVIEW game by spending less time in the penalty box. Frank, who was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in the seventh round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, fi nished second on the team with 41 blocked shots, including six blocks in a win over No. 15 Northern Michigan (11/18). Steve Silver is the last of the upperclassmen on the blue line. The junior played in 30 games for the Broncos and fi nished the season with a plus/minus of +6. He also added four points (2-2) on the season, including a two-goal game in a loss to No. 6 Miami. The sophomores on the blue line were led by Tyler Ludwig. The Colleyville, Texas resident played in all 37 games for the Broncos. Ludwig was second among Bronco defensemen in scoring with 12 points (1-11) and he also led the team with 43 blocked shots. Ludwig possesses good size and a good hockey IQ. His fi rst collegiate goal came in a 6-3 victory over No. 6 Michigan, and also fi nished the season with a plus/minus of +12. Kevin O Connor appeared in 20 games for the Broncos and fi nished the season with four points (1-3). Jordan Collins and Julian Zamparo also made their collegiate debuts in , and both bring good size and toughness to an already deep blue line HOCKEY PREVIEW GOALTENDERS The only returning goaltender for Western Michigan is sophomore Riley Gill. Riley is a very competitive individual and has great balance in his life, said Culhane. Looking at him as a goalie, he is athletic, big and competitive. The one thing that impresses me is he never wants to get out of the net and squares the puck all the time. He sets up every shot, and I think if he can see it he can save it. Gill recorded his fi rst career win in his fi rst career start, a 5-3 victory over Ferris State (10/21). He would then go on to record four shutouts, second best in a single season and career at WMU. Gill set the single season save percentage record, fi nishing the season with a.912 save percentage. He also holds the second-best season in WMU history with a 2.79 goals-against average. Gill fi nished the season with a record while splitting time with former Bronco Daniel Bellissimo. He will expect to get the bulk of the starts in the season and add to his already impressive résumé. NEWCOMERS The Broncos bring in eight new faces this season fi ve forwards, one defenseman, and two goalies. Junior defenseman Chris Frank may be one of the hardest hitters in the CCHA and has steadily improved as his Bronco career progressed. Frank the Tank, as he is called by the Lawson Lunatics, registered a career-high 10 assists last season. He also improved his The new class is lead by NHL draftees Max Campbell and Ryan Watson. Campbell was drafted in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft in the fi fth round by the New York Rangers. Campbell played his juniors for the Strathroy Rockets in Strathroy, Ontario. He scored 95 points (46-49) in 46 games on the way to being named OHA Junior B Player of the Year and WESTERN MICHIGAN HOCKEY MEDIA GUIDE 5

PREVIEW HOCKEY PREVIEW being named MVP of the WOHL. Campbell possesses tremendous scoring skill and will be expected to contribute offensively. Watson, younger brother of current Bronco Cam Watson, was drafted in the seventh round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers. Watson led the Cambridge Winterhawks to a Sutherland Cup Championship in 2007, beating out Campbell s Strathroy Rockets in the championship. He fi nished the season with 56 points (27-29) in just 37 games played. Ryan is coming off a spectacular junior career, winning back-to-back championships, added Culhane. He s been very solid through junior hockey and we expect him to be a solid two-way player. At times he even killed penalties on the blue line as a defenseman in junior hockey. Watson and Campbell join defenseman Chris Frank and forward Matt Clackson as the only NHL draftees currently on the Bronco roster. The Broncos also add a tough forward in Adam Flink. Flink played his juniors with the Texas Tornados, registering 22 points (12-10) in his previous season. He is expected to add grit and energy to Western Michigan s lineup. WMU also brings in two local forwards in Patrick Nagorsen and Travis Paeth. Nagorsen, a Novi, Mich., resident, played his juniors for the Traverse City North Stars. The future center racked up 46 points (14-32) in with the North Stars. Paeth was hampered by a knee injury last season and only saw action in 11 games with the Des Moines Buccaneers, scoring seven points (2-5). The Muskegon native is a solid two-way player and will be expected to add a lot of grit to the Bronco lineup. Mike Levendusky is the lone defenseman of the recruiting class and is a former defensive player of the year for the EJHL and was also an EJHL All-Star for the Bridgewater Bandits. The Greensburg, Pa., native racked up 34 points (9-25) for the Bandits last season and will continue to add depth to the blue line for the Broncos. Broncos. WMU fi nished , going 11-6 in the second half of the season. Chris Brooks returns as associate head coach for his ninth season with the Broncos. WMU also welcomes back assistant coach Marc Fakler for his second year and volunteer coach Allen Avery is back for his fi fth year working with the goaltenders. SCHEDULE Western Michigan begins its 36th varsity season on Oct. 13, when the Broncos host the University of Windsor in an exhibition match up. Unlike last year, the Broncos will not begin CCHA play until Nov. 2. Last season the Broncos opened up their regular season facing off against No. 3 Michigan State. This season they begin their regular season hosting Bentley College on Oct. 19. The cluster opponents for the season are Notre Dame, Bowling Green and Ferris State. The Broncos will play each team four times during the season. The Broncos make visits to Alaska and Miami, while neither team returns to Lawson this season. Ohio State makes a visit to Lawson this season; in their previous visit in 2005 the Broncos swept the Buckeyes. The Broncos only series with the defending national champion Michigan State occurs Feb Keeping up with recent tradition, the Broncos head off during Christmas to play in a holiday tournament. The Broncos have played in very tough holiday tournaments the past few seasons and this season will be no different. The Broncos will travel to the University of Vermont tournament where they will play Quinnipiac and either Holy Cross or Vermont. In more nonconference action the Broncos also take on Niagara University and get a visit from the US World Junior team. I like the way the schedule sets up for us, added Culhane. We have some non-conference games early in October and then moving into conference play. Through the whole second half of the year after Christmas it is all conference play. Christmas time we venture to the University of Vermont and get to play in the holiday tournament there. 6 Matt Federico and Jerry Kuhn are the two netminders that WMU brings in for the season. Kuhn had a solid juniors career with the Sioux City Musketeers, breaking seven Musketeer goaltending records. The Southgate, Mich., native fi nished his career with a record of in two seasons. Kuhn will be expected to push Gill for playing time between the pipes. Federico is the fi rst goalie from the state of Arizona to ever play Division I hockey. Coming to Kalamazoo from Scottsdale, Ariz., Federico possess good refl exes and will back up Gill and Kuhn. LOSSES Western Michigan will have to do without the services of Letestu and Szczechura. What they brought to the team, as mentioned earlier, didn t just show up on a stat sheet. They, along with defensemen Ryan Mahrle, provided leadership to this squad. Mahrle was the top scoring defenseman on WMU s roster in and ended a solid four-year career by signing with the Kalamazoo Kings of the IHL. WMU also lost Kevin Labatte, Jason Moul, and Brett John to graduation. Goalie Daniel Bellissimo fi nished his Bronco run with a career record of COACHES Head coach Jim Culhane returns for his ninth full season with Western Michigan, making his tenure the second longest in school history. Culhane is coming off one of his better seasons with the WESTERN MICHIGAN HOCKEY MEDIA GUIDE

HOCKEY COACHES & STAFF

HOCKEY COACHES & STAFF 8 Jim Culhane begins his ninth full season at Western Michigan having established the second-longest tenure behind the bench in WMU s hockey history.
