7 Carolina Hurricanes: Media Notes LAST GAME Washington 3, Hurricanes 2 Nov. 30, 2009 * RBCCenter, Raleigh, NC The Washington Capitals scored a 3-2 win at the RBC Center in the teams first meeting of to hand the Carolina Hurricanes their fifth consecutive regulation loss. Joe Corvo notched a power-play goal 4:35 into the game, but then was severely cut by the skate of Caps defenseman Karl Alzner just 34 seconds later and forced to leave the game. Nicklas Backstrom tied the game at 6:11 of the first period, and with 2:40 remaining in the opening frame, Backstrom helped give Washington a 2-1 lead when he set up Eric Fehr s seventh goal of the season. Backstrom scored again at 14:53 of the second to extend the Caps lead to 3-1. Matt Cullen managed an extra-attacker goal with 16 seconds remaining to make the game 3-2, but Washington staved off the Canes late push and held on for the win. Michael Leighton made 30 saves in the losing effort, while Jose Theodore s 38 saves propelled the Caps. Star forward Alex Ovechkin was ejected from the game at the 12:05 mark of the first period when he drew a five-minute kneeing major and a game misconduct following a knee-to-knee collision with Canes defenseman Tim Gleason.
