7 Carolina Hurricanes: Media Notes LAST GAME Philadelphia 6, Hurricanes 1 Oct. 31, 2009 * Wachovia Center, Philadelphia, PA The Philadelphia Flyers burst to a 3-0 first period lead and never looked back, knocking off the Carolina Hurricanes 6-1 in a Halloween matinee at the Wachovia Center. Scott Hartnell, David Laliberte and Matt Carle each beat Hurricanes netminder Michael Leighton in the opening period, while Flyers goalie Ray Emery stopped all 11 Carolina shots. Just 14 seconds after Hurricanes center Brandon Sutter cut the lead to two with his first goal of the season, Flyers left wing James Van Riemsdyk made it 4-1 with his second tally of the year. Philadelphia defenseman Braydon Coburn netted a pair of third-period goals to provide the final margin. Leighton, stopped 22 of 28 shots in the loss, his first start of the season. THE IRONMAN Hurricanes center Eric Staal carries a 348 consecutive games-played streak into Sunday s game. He ranks second in franchise history in consecutive games played behind Dave Tippett (419). Staal needs to play all 82 games this season and the first game of the season to tie Tippett s mark.
