The Masterton Trophy is awarded annually to the NHL player best exemplifying the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. The winner is selected from a poll of the 30 chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season and a $2,500 grant from the PHWA is awarded annually to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund, based in Bloomington, Minn., in the name of the winner. Brind Amour, 38, suffered a season-ending knee injury in February 2008, and a second injury to the same knee in September 2008, before the opening of training camp. Despite the injuries, subsequent surgeries and difficult rehabilitations, Brind Amour played in Carolina s final preseason game just 20 days after the second procedure, and was in the lineup for the Hurricanes season opener on Oct. 10. He played in 80 of the team s 82 games in , led all NHL skaters with a 61.0 faceoff-win percentage and ranked second among Carolina forwards in average ice time at 18:58 per game. In the Hurricanes last 17 regular-season games, Brind Amour scored eight goals, earned 12 assists (20 points) and registered a plus-8 plus/minus rating, helping the team to a record in that span. For the season, he ranked tied for second on the team with 35 assists and fourth with 51 points. Brind Amour completed his 19th NHL regular season in , and played in his 1,400th NHL regular-season game on April 2 against the New York Rangers. He became just the fourth NHL player to play in 600 games with two different clubs when he skated in the Hurricanes game against the Rangers on March 9. He is one of just six active NHL players with 400-or-more goals and 700-or-more assists. The PHWA presented the Masterton Trophy in 1968 to commemorate Bill Masterton, a player with the Minnesota North Stars, who exhibited to a high degree the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. 16 Hurricanes Team Notes THE WHIZARD Hurricanes forward Ray Whitney earned his third career hat trick on March 6 against Calgary, reaching the 300-goals plateau for his NHL career with the third goal. His second goal of the game marked his 20th of the season, marking the eighth season in his career, and third consecutive season, he has reached 20 goals. Whitney led the Hurricanes in the regular season 77 points, 53 assists and 30 power-play points. He ranked third on the team in goals (24) and was one of two Carolina skaters to play in all 82 of the team s games, marking the first time he played in all 82 regular-season games in his career. He earned his 800th NHL point with his third of three assists against the Islanders on March 20, and earned his 500th NHL assist on March 25 against Ottawa. The regular season marked the third 50-plus assists season, and fourth 70-plus points season of his 17-season NHL career. THE WARDEN On April 7 against the New York Islanders, goaltender Cam Ward earned his 39th win of the season, breaking the franchise record for wins in a single season by a goaltender. Martin Gerber set the previous record of 38 wins in On April 1, the NHL named Ward the league s first star of the month for March, marking just the third such honor for a player in franchise history. Ward earned a record with a 1.98 goals-against average and a.938 save percentage in 13 games in March. He started each of the Hurricanes 28 games from Feb. 7-April 9, posting a record, 2.30 goals-against average and a.922 save percentage and three shutouts in that span. It was the longest consecutive-starts streak of his career. His previous longest consecutive-starts streak came when he started 20 consecutive games to conclude the season, from Feb. 19 through April 4. Ward was also named the NHL s third star of the week for the period ending March 29, marking the fourth star of the week honor for him this season. The fourth-year netminder and 2006 Conn Smythe trophy winner finished the regular season ranked third among NHL netminders with 39 wins, fifth with 68 games played and tied for sixth with a franchise-best tying six shutouts. THE CAPTAIN KEEPS CLIMBING Hurricanes captain Rod Brind Amour finished the regular season with 51 points (16g, 35a) and ranked 48th on the NHL s all-time scoring list with 1,165 regular-season points. It marked fourth consecutive and 14th overall time in his 19 NHL regular seasons that he topped the 50-point mark.
