I didn t sit back and fall into his style of game, Sutter said of Gretzky. My job is to stop him but I didn t abandon my own game. Everyone out there tonight made it possible. It was just one of those nights. Maybe (Gretzky) is a little too unselfish the way he passes off so much. I don t think Flyers did anything to stop Wayne (Gretzky), said 41-year old Oilers head coach Glen Sather. I think he stopped himself. He just didn t skate and play as well as he is capable of playing. We spent the first two periods killing penalties and that hurt a lot. But we had a chance to win. Gretzky missed an open net and Coffey missed a breakaway opportunity. Flyers forward Tim Slot Machine Kerr missed the entire Nordiques series save two shifts with a knee injury. After this game, Kerr said it felt pretty good. Mike Keenan used me sparingly but it s going to get better every day. Oilers Willy Lindstrom s goal was the first Flyers netminder Pelle Lindbergh had allowed in 149:50 (J.F. Sauve QUE in second period of G5 v. Nordiques). I can t say enough about our little guy, Pelle, said Flyers defenceman Brad Marsh. He was great tonight. "In a tight game we can t retaliate by hooking and holding and taking penalties, said Oilers defenceman Kevin Lowe. Our mental mistakes gave them momentum. Grant Fuhr made enough saves for us to win but we just gave them too many chances. Saturday, May 25 PHILADELPHIA EDMONTON 4 1. Players like Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson and Mark Messier, are very synchronistic in the four-on-four situation, said Oilers defenceman Paul Coffey. So playing that way is no hardship for us. I think we gave up at the end and we almost let them off the hook. We were very, very lucky to win that game because they outplayed us. I hope we ve learned a lesson that there s no use getting off to the big start if we don t have a big finish. One of our big strengths is that we re a very unselfish hockey team, said Oilers centre Wayne Gretzky. It doesn t matter who scores the goals as long as we win. That approach sometimes hurts us but, in the long run, it s the best way to be. A couple of times, I should have taken the shot instead of passing the puck. I thought I played a strong game. Some people said I didn t show up for the first game in Philly and I was a little better in the second game. I like to think about my total game, how well I play defensively, but it seems my work gets rated on goals and assists. Flyers forward Tim Kerr aggravated his injured and braced knee in the first period. He did not return to this game and would not play another minute in this series. Flyers tough defenceman Ed Hospodar cross-checked Oilers forward Mark Napier in the mouth, removing three teeth. The only person in the rink who didn t see Hospodar cross check Napier was the referee (Bryan Lewis), spat Oilers head coach Glen Sather. You hope officials will take care of him. If they can t do anything about him, then I ll have to do it. We have people who can take care of him and if we do, they better have two boxes ready to take him away one for his head, one for his body. Thursday, May 23 EDMONTON PHILADELPHIA 1 1. He played on the left side with C Wayne Gretzky and RW Jari Kurri. We were asking a lot from the kid but we needed some kind of a lift, said Sather. We definitely didn t want to come out of this building two down. Tikkanen would go on to win five Stanley Cups (four in Edmonton and one with the 1994 New York Rangers). In 186 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, Tikkanen had 72 goals and 132 points. I wasn t nervous at all, said Tikkanen, sporting a mohawk haircut courtesy of his Oilers teammates. I didn t come to North America for a vacation, you know. With under two minutes to play, and the Flyers swarming the Edmonton zone, Oilers defenceman Paul Coffey intentionally knocked the Edmonton net off the magnetic cups which hold it in place. There was no penalty assessed. It was a miscall by Kerry Fraser, said Flyers 35-year old rookie head coach Mike Keenan. It was an intentional infraction by Coffey. (Fraser) didn t have the courage to call it. Tuesday, May 28 PHILADELPHIA EDMONTON 5 1. PHILADELPHIA, Rich Sutter 1 (Ron Sutter, Derrick Smith) 0:46 2. If Sutter scored that goal, we might not have caught them, said Oilers head coach Glen Sather. The penalty shot probably was the point that turned the game around. We would have been in much better shape against the Oilers at 4-1 than we were at 3-1, said Flyers head coach Mike Keenan, alluding to Ron Sutter s failed penalty shot. Then those four penalties in a row to us were a rather large factor in the game, too. Oilers head coach Glen Sather said he couldn t remember Wayne Gretzky playing better than he is right now. Of course, he s had some stretches of great hockey during his career, but I ve never seen him better than he s playing right now, said Sather. Well, this was the big game of the Stanley Cup Final series for us. We got away to a bad start but when the crunch was really on, Wayne came through, which is the mark of greatness. I can t think of anyone else who could have made the play he did to get our winning goal. I checked the tape of it and the puck was loose, two Flyer sticks were in the picture going for it, but he got there first and put it in the net. Flyers forwards Ilkka Sinisalo (sore shoulder) and Dave Poulin (sore knee, bruised ribs) are still playing despite injuries hampering their effectiveness. And they are now playing without Tim Kerr. Does losing a Kerr hurt us? asked Flyers head coach Mike Keenan. Take a Wayne Gretzky or Jari Kurri out of the Oiler line-up and see if it hurts. Flyers 25-year old netminder Pelle Lindbergh appears to be struggling in the arena heat. He left the game briefly in the second period to drink some water, and was replaced by Bob Froese for the third period of this game. The Oilers refused to allow Flyers to have a water bottle on top of their net to help Lindbergh. Players working sixty minutes in all that equipment at this time of year should have the chance to get a drink of water, said Flyers head coach Mike Keenan. Pelle Lindbergh s story is one of the great tragedies in the history of the NHL. He won the Vezina Trophy and was a First Team All-Star in But, on 10 November 1985, which driving his Porsche 930 Turbo with a blood alcohol level of.24% (well above legal in New Jersey), Lindbergh crashed into a wall and was declared brain dead. He was taken off life support the following day and died.

Coffey had three goals and five assists in this Stanley Cup Final v. Flyers. The important thing is (Paul) Coffey represents, to such a degree, what Oiler hockey consists of, said Oilers 50-year old assistant coach John Muckler. By that I mean his ability to much such quick transition from defence to offence. He ll make a defensive play in our zone and take off up the ice so rapidly the other side has no time to react. So much of our scoring results from this. Even though I ve been a pro for seven seasons, I like to think that I haven t reached my peak and I will improve as a player in the next few years, said Oilers 24-year old Conn Smythe Trophy winner Wayne Gretzky. I also feel that we re a long way from our peak as a team. We ve been growing all the time, improving defensively, for instance, and becoming more flexible. Occasionally, in the past, as a team, we ve been a little stubborn in making changes in how we do things. But we re overcoming that. There was universal sentiment following this game that the Conn Smythe Trophy could also have gone to either Oilers defenceman Paul Coffey or Oilers netminder Grant Fuhr. The Oilers are a great team and their stars really starred for them, said Flyers head coach Mike Keenan. The essence of their club was magnified by the efforts of their top players. With several players who are the core of the team out of the line-up (D Brad McCrimmon, F Tim Kerr, G Pelle Lindbergh) or playing hurt (F Ilkka Sinisalo, F Dave Poulin), we had trouble getting our play to as high a level as the Oilers. I think they have a little easier time getting to the Finals in the west then a team does from the east because we have to grind everything out. Mike Keenan would lead three more teams to the Stanley Cup Final in his career the 1987 Flyers, the 1992 Chicago Blackhawks and 1994 New York Rangers, where he won his only Stanley Cup. Keenan also coached Mettalurg Magnitogorsk to the Gagarin Cup championship in the KHL in Flyers C Dave Poulin was awarded his penalty shot after he was dragged down on a breakaway by Oilers defenceman Paul Coffey. Tonight, Flyers 26-year old netminder Bob Froese made his first start since 2 April 1985 which was the Flyers 78 th game of the 80-game regular season In just the second minute of the game, Oilers defenceman Paul Coffey was bodied into one of Grant Fuhr s goalposts by Flyers forward Brian Propp. It took Coffey several minutes to get back to his feet, with his lower back having borne the impact with the post.
