Actually, he had them right where he wanted them. Hiller, en route to his 12th consecutive win in the Ducks' 5-2 victory over the Atlantic Division-leading Bruins at Honda Center, opted to add the extra flair of a glove flip in snaring a first-period blast by Bruins forward Brad Marchand. Marchand was stunned he didn't score. "Those saves, you don't make every night," Hiller said of his extra theatrics. "It got the crowd into it, the whole team We knew we could play a lot better. That's what we did." The Ducks (32-8-5) proceeded to their 14th win in 15 games and extended their unbeaten-in-regulation start at Honda Center to How they did it speaks of how well things are going, as the team that ranked 26th in the league in power-play success going into the weekend scored three power-play goals, including two in the second period by Mathieu Perreault and Corey Perry. "We talked about keeping it more simple," said Perreault, who added a second goal in even strength late in the third period to ice the loss for Boston ( ). "It was nothing pretty, just guys going to the net, getting shots. It worked for us." In the third period, center Ryan Getzlaf dished a crisp delivery from the boards to Nick Bonino to answer after the Bruins closed to within 3-2. "When you speak to it every day the whole power play is just about getting shots and chances," Getzlaf said. "The last couple games, we've had tons of them. It's a matter of us working hard every night." That's something Hiller has set the tone with, as he stopped 30 of 32 shots and kept Boston scoreless in the first period despite outshooting the Ducks, 16-3, in the scoreless 20 minutes. "We found a way not to get scored on, to get back into the game," Hiller said. "Sometimes, it's easier when you give up a lot of shots, you get right into the game. I didn't want to give up that first goal. "Nobody was happy with the first period. We lost too many battles, but we calmed things down. It's been an unbelievable stretch." No NHL goalie has won 12 straight since Martin Brodeur did it for the New Jersey Devils in "He kept us in the game," Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said. "It's incredible goaltending when you think of the consistency... a real testament to him." The coach was also thrilled with the perseverance of the power-play units after a recent one-for-34 rut that ended when Perry scored the game-winning goal late in overtime Sunday against Vancouver. The Ducks opened the scoring Tuesday by converting the advantage after Boston defenseman Dougie Hamilton committed a holding penalty 4:41 into the second period. Perreault scored on Boston goalie Tuukka Rask off a sharp pass to the front of the goal by Teemu Selanne, who earlier Tuesday was named to his record-tying sixth Olympic team by Finland. Seven Ducks total were named to Olympic squads, including Getzlaf and Perry to Team Canada, Selanne and Sami Vatanen to Finland and forward Jakob Silfverberg to Sweden on Tuesday. Center Saku Koivu declined his invitation to Finland, his primary reason being his interest in being fully healthy for an extended Ducks playoff run toward the Stanley Cup. After beating the Bruins and owning a goals lead over visitors, Perreault said the stance is validated. "We can play with anyone," he said. LA Times: LOADED: Anaheim Ducks Finland names Selanne to a sixth Olympic team January 7th, 2014, 4:56 am posted by ERIC STEPHENS Teemu Selanne will play in his record-tying sixth Winter Olympics as the winger and icon of the Ducks will be part of Finland's roster for the Sochi Games next month. Selanne will join Finnish countryman Raimo Helminen as the only players to have competed in six different Olympics. The 43-year-old Ducks star is the leading scorer in the history of the men's hockey tournament. Ducks defenseman Sami Vatanen was named to his first Olympic team but center Saku Koivu declined an invitation, according to reports out of Finland. Koivu has been effective for the Ducks with eight goals and nine assists in 29 games. Also on Tuesday, the Ducks' Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry were named to Team Canada, and Jakob Silfverberg was named to Team Sweden. The Ducks now have seven players going to the Olympics: Perry, Getzlaf, Selanne, Vatanen, Silfverberg, Jonas Hiller (Switzerland) and Cam Fowler (United States). On the Finnish team, there are 16 current NHL players but one, Minnesota's Mikko Koivu, might not be available after suffering a broken ankle during a game against Washington last week. The younger Koivu was seen as a potential captain.

Other notables on Finland's team include goalies Tuukka Rask of Boston, Antti Niemi of San Jose and Kari Lehtonen of Dallas, defensemen Sami Salo of Tampa Bay and Kimmo Timonen of Philadelphia and forwards Jussi Jokinen of Pittsburgh, Valtteri Filppula of Tampa Bay and Olli Jokinen of Winnipeg. Rookies Olli Maatta of Pittsburgh and Aleksander Barkov of Florida were also selected. Orange County Register: LOADED: Anaheim Ducks Final: Ducks 5, Bruins 2 January 7th, 2014, 9:20 pm posted by ERIC STEPHENS ANAHEIM - Another home game for the Ducks meant another win. As it has been all season. The Ducks continued their remarkable run at Honda Center on Tuesday night, using three power-play goals to roll past the Boston Bruins 5-2 before an announced overflow crowd of 17,238. Mathieu Perreault got his first two-goal game with the Pacific Division-leading Ducks (32-8-5), who also got scores from Corey Perry, Andrew Cogliano and Nick Bonino to improve to at home. Jonas Hiller was brilliant in the first period and finished with 30 saves to win his 12th consecutive start. Daniel Paille and Dougie Hamilton scored for Boston ( ). Perreault lit the scoreboard first with a one-time shot to convert Teemu Selanne's pass with Hamilton serving a holding minor in the second peeriod. The assist was Selanne's first point in six games and just his fifth in his last 25. Perry made it 2-0 with the Ducks' second goal in as many power plays as he jumped on a rebound left by Boston goalie Tuukka Rask on a shot by Nick Bonino. Cogliano continued his breakout season by following up on some great work by Daniel Winnik on the penalty kill, banging in a feed from his linemate past Rask for a three-goal advantage. Paille cut it to 3-1 in the final minute of the second and Hamilton made it a one-goal game seven minutes into the third. But Bonino finished off a pass from Ryan Getzlaf to make it 4-2 and then Perreault added the final touch at 17:29 of the third. Orange County Register: LOADED: Anaheim Ducks Miller: Ducks fan flames of success By JEFF MILLER Published: Jan. 7, 2014 Updated: 10:57 p.m. ANAHEIM They talked about the recent energy in the place and how the crowd here Sunday was crazy, first-year Ducks winger Jakob Silfverberg calling the home atmosphere so far this season unreal. The Ducks used a story on the team s Web site this week to credit the input of the Honda Center faithful, thanking the fans for their vocal loyalty to date and encouraging their continued noise in the second half of the season. Silfverberg s quote even was shown on the overhead video boards before the start of the game Tuesday against Boston, the team intent on convincing the masses that they can make a difference. The fans get really into it, Silfverberg s quote read, and it pushes us to play even harder at home. The visual caused a swell inside the building, the crowd that later would be announced as numbering 17,238 roaring its approval. Inspired to play even harder, the Ducks then permitted the Bruins the game s first nine shots on goal and didn t have their first until nearly 10 minutes had been played. All it took was some spirited aerobics from goalie Jonas Hiller to keep the score tied, 0-0. Funny, though, how such starts don t seem to matter much right now to the Ducks, especially at home, where they improved to a ridiculous by eventually beating the Bruins, 5-2. That s 20 home games for the season and still not a regulation loss. No other NHL team can make that boast. Everyone in the Eastern Conference already has lost at least three home games in regulation. No wonder Coach Bruce Boudreau has become fond of saying, If you believe you can win, you re always in the game. In this arena, the Ducks are always in the game as much as the puck is always in the game. Odd, but Honda Center never has been known as a black hole, a place opponents dread, a nightmarish house of horrors raining octopi or rubber rats or catfish. Someone in San Jose celebrated a visit by the Ducks there two years ago by dropping an actual dead duck onto the ice. But here? Sure, Wild Wing has been known to float down from the ceiling, but, just between us, that s a person inside a duck costume not a real duck with pituitary issues. Over a weekend, a bat a genuine winged rodent descended from the rafters at Bell Centre in Montreal. Now that s a nightmare. The thing disrupted a game between the Canadiens and Senators and became so instantly popular that, within hours, it had a Twitter account. At last check, the bat had 284 followers. It was one of those things where it sees a perch on my shoulder, Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson said after the game. And it s not exactly a friend I want perching on my shoulder. Despite the scare, the Senators beat the Canadiens in overtime anyway, proving that the bat had no real power and that Bell Centre housed no voodoo-type magic. Honda Center, however, has been a different story. The Ducks most recent home loss came in May, in Game 7 of a first-round playoff defeat to Detroit. That was so long ago that the Angels were still alive then, that Yasiel Puig hadn t yet made his Dodgers debut, that there was still a belief Dwight Howard would remain a Laker. A lot has changed since that game, a game during which Emerson Etem scored one of the Ducks goals. But the one constant has been Ducks success. Of course, a whole lot of good has been happening around this team lately. Tuesday began with the number of Ducks going to the upcoming Olympics reaching seven. The group includes Cam Fowler and Sami Vatanen, who will be Olympic rookies, and Teemu Selanne, who will be appearing in his sixth Winter Games. The Ducks previous victory came when they scored the tying goal in the final minute of regulation and the winner in the final two seconds of overtime. Before that, they won a game when defensemen Ben Lovejoy scored twice in barely 21/2 minutes. To score his previous two goals, Lovejoy needed nearly 23 months. Tuesday, they ended up having to offer standing-room-only tickets, the crowd marking the Ducks fifth consecutive sellout. And after another indifferent start, they eventually did the only thing they ve done all season at home: produce points. When Mathieu Perreault scored his second goal of the game in the final three minutes, the Ducks had secured another victory and an important giveaway for their loyal fans. The five goals meant free food for everyone, all 17,238, should they choose to cash in. And, honestly, while it s nice to produce stories that compliment the crowd and to quote players pumping up the fans, there can t be a more heartfelt thank you then winning 86,190 free chicken wings. Orange County Register: LOADED: Anaheim Ducks Ducks win over Boston is special By Gene Warnick, Los Angeles Daily News Posted: 01/07/14, 10:47 PM PST ANAHEIM >> The Ducks got a special performance from their special teams Tuesday night. Mathieu Perreault and Corey Perry scored power-play goals 2:36 apart in the second period, Andrew Cogliano added a short-handed goal, and Nick Bonino also scored with the man advantage as the Ducks defeated the Boston Bruins 5-2 before a standing-room only crowd at Honda Center. The victory gave the Ducks (32-8-5) sole possession of first overall in the NHL standings with 69 points as they improved to at home. The Ducks special teams had been mediocre thus far this season, ranking 24th of 30 teams on the power play and 22nd on the penalty kill. But you wouldn t have known it against Boston, which has the second-best record, behind Pittsburgh, in the Eastern Conference. The Bruins dominated the first period, outshooting the Ducks 16-3, but goaltender Jonas Hiller made several spectacular saves in keeping it scoreless. He kept us in the game until we got our stuff together, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said of Hiller. With Boston s Dougie Hamilton in the penalty box for holding early in the second, Teemu Selanne drove the puck into the corner and fed Perreault in the slot. With Patrick Maroon providing a screen, Perreault fired the puck over the shoulder of Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask at 5:53. We talked about (the power play) a lot and wanted to keep it simple, said Perreault, who added the Ducks lone even-strength goal at 17:29 of the third to clinch the victory. Nothing pretty, just guys going to the net. Perry made it 2-0 at 8:19 in much the same way after a penalty to Boston s Johnny Boychuk, charging into the slot to pick up a rebound off a Nick Bonino shot and sliding it into a nearly empty net. What the power play is... it s just about getting chances, said Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf, who helped set up the second goal. We ve done that the past couple games, they just weren t always going in. It s a matter of us working hard and creating momentum. Cogliano s short-handed goal at 17:10 made it 3-0. A turnover by Boston s Reilly Smith at the blue line gave the Ducks a 3-on-2 break and Daniel Winnik s drop pass set up Cogliano for a backhander. The Bruins were able to pull within 3-2 on goals by Daniel Paille and Hamilton, but a power-play goal by Bonino at 14:23 of the third restored a two-goal margin. I was shocked. They went in tonight, Boudreau joked when asked about the power play. We talked about it in the (pregame) meeting tonight... even though the numbers aren t there (a 14.5 percent success rate), we re doing a lot of good things and getting a lot of good chances. So, just persevere and keep doing what you re doing. They did, and they finally went in. Five more Ducks were added to Olympic rosters Tuesday, with forwards Getzlaf and Perry being named to Team Canada; Selanne and defenseman Sami Vatanen joining Finland s team; and forward Jakob Silfverberg being selected by Sweden.

Defenseman Cam Fowler was previously picked for Team USA, and Hiller will backstop Switzerland. LA Daily News: LOADED: Boston Bruins Bruins players named to Olympics teams Posted by Matt Pepin, Boston.com Staff January 7, :17 AM Several Bruins players have been chosen for the Olympic hockey teams of their home countries. Center Patrice Bergeron was named to Canada's Olympic team for the second time. Bergeron was a member of Canada's gold medal-winning team at the Vancouver Olympics in Obviously really excited, Bergeron said. It s a huge honor just to be named to that team and to be part of that 25. To have a chance to represent your country is always something very special and something I take a lot of pride in. Looking forward to it. Goalie Tuukka Rask will play for Finland, and center David Krejci is on the Czech Republic team. Bruins defenseman and captain Zdeno Chara will be the captain of Slovakia in his third Olympics. "You re carrying the whole nation on your back as a team, kind of," Rask said. "For us as Finnish players, expectations are always high. Our roster might not be the best out there, but people still expect us to succeed out there. "It s a little different expectations than your club teams but then again you re playing with your countrymen and for your country. It s a special experience." Left wing Loui Eriksson, acquired in the trade that sent Tyler Seguin to the Stars in the summer, was named to Sweden's Olympics team. Tuesday was the deadline for nations to declare their rosters for the Olympics, which begin Feb. 7 in Sochi, Russia. The Olympic hockey tournament begins Feb. 12, and the NHL will take a break for the Olympics after its games of Feb. 8 and resume play on Feb. 26. Bruins coach Claude Julien is an assistant coach for Team Canada, and general manager Peter Chiarelli is part of Canada's management team. There are no Bruins players on Team USA, which announced its roster on Jan. 1. I actually knew it before, a couple weeks before the coach called me and told me he wanted me to be on the team, Krejci said Monday. But nothing was official until today. Obviously my friends and my family started texting me. It s pretty cool and it s obviously an honor to play for my country. Krejci also played for the Czech Republic in the Vancouver Olympics in I like [the team s] chances, Krejci said. Obviously everybody s talking about Canada, US, Sweden, Russia, but we still have some good players. In a tournament like that, it s only a matter of one game." Forward Milan Lucic was considered for Team Canada and invited to its orientation camp, but was not among the 25 players chosen for the final roster. Boston Globe LOADED: Boston Bruins B's Patrice Bergeron excited to make Canadian Olympic team Tuesday, January 7, Stephen Harris ANAHEIM It would have been a bit of a surprise if Bruins center Patrice Bergeron wasn't picked for Team Canada for the upcoming Sochi Olympics, but he nonetheless was excited to get a voice mail yesterday morning from B's GM and Team Canada assistant GM Peter Chiarelli making his selection official. "It's a huge honor to be named to that team, to be part of that group of 25 players," said Bergeron, part of Canada's gold medal team four years ago. "To represent your country is always something very special, something I take a lot of pride in. I'm looking forward to it. "I would not want to be those guys who had to make the difficult decisions. We've said often we could have two teams and still be very effective. It's a hard task. I'm just very honored that I was picked." Bergeron hasn't yet heard what role he'll play. "I haven't had a chance to speak to anyone yet," he said. "I'm not sure what will be expected. I'll just be myself and play my game, try to be good defensively and good on faceoffs." Penguins star Sidney Crosby, who scored the gold-medal winning goal in 2010 against the U.S., headlines the team. He will be joined up front by Bergeron, Jamie Benn, Jeff Carter, Matt Duchene, Ryan Getzlaf, Chris Kunitz, Patrick Marleau, Rick Nash, Corey Perry, Patrick Sharp, Steven Stamkos, John Tavares and Jonathan Toews. Jay Bouwmeester, Drew Doughty, Dan Hamhuis, Duncan Keith, Alex Pietrangelo, P.K. Subban, Marc-Édouard Vlasic and Shea Weber will be on defense. Roberto Luongo, Carey Price and Mike Smith will be in goal. Boston Herald LOADED: Boston Bruins Zdeno Chara to captain Slovakia in Sochi Tuesday, January 7, Tom Rose BRATISLAVA, Slovakia - Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara will captain Slovakia at the Sochi Games next month, hoping to improve on fourth place at the Vancouver Olympics. Other major Slovak stars, including Chicago Blackhawks forwards Michal Handzus and Marian Hossa and St. Louis Blues goaltender Jaroslav Halak are also on the 25-man squad that coach Vladimir Vujtek announced on Tuesday. Defensemen Lubomir Visnovsky of the New York Islanders and Michal Sersen of HC Slovan Bratislava together with forward Marian Gaborik of the Columbus Blue Jackets made the team although they are still injured. Slovakia starts the Olympic tournament on Feb. 13 against the United States before facing Slovenia and Russia in Group A. In Vancouver in 2010, Slovakia surprised by placing fourth, its highest finish in Olympic ice hockey. Boston Herald LOADED: Boston Bruins Bergeron makes Team Canada Tuesday, January 7, Stephen Harris ANAHEIM -- Bruins center Patrice Bergeron was one of 25 players named today to the Canadian Olympic team for the upcoming Sochi Games. Bergeron was the lone Bruin picked for the team. Milan Lucic and Brad Marchand had also been on Canada's list of candidates. It will be the second Olympic appearance for Bergeron, who played a small role on Canada's gold medal-winning squad at the 2010 Vancouver Games. On a team loaded with talented centermen, Bergeron may again focus on penalty-killing and key faceoffs -- two areas in which he is among the NHL's best. This season, he has totals in 42 games, and a plus-17, despite matching up against opponents' top lines nightly. Bergeron will comment on the selection this morning after the B's morning skate in advance of tonight's clash with the powerful Anaheim Ducks.

Boston Herald LOADED: Boston Bruins B s trip, fall in Anaheim Wednesday, January 8, 2014 Stephen Harris ANAHEIM, Calif. The undermanned Bruins opened their California trip with a tremendous first 20 minutes, and actually delivered a very strong effort all the way through last night at the Honda Center. In that first period we totally outshot them and outchanced them, said B s goalie Tuukka Rask. Indeed, they clearly outplayed the NHL-leading Ducks most of the night. But it wasn t quite enough, as the home team scored on all three of its power plays en route to a 5-2 win. It s unfortunate that the final score doesn t indicate it, but I thought we played a good, solid game, said B s coach Claude Julien. The B s had the chance to seize control in their trip opener with a terrific first period against the mighty Ducks, but could not take advantage. Giving the Ducks the chance to climb back into the game proved a bad idea, as the home team scored three goals in the second period two on power plays, one shorthanded to go up 3-0. Second periods have been a serious flaw for the Bruins this season. We should have come out of that (first period) with at least a couple of goals lead, with the quality chances we had, Julien said. Unfortunately those power-play goals they got in the second period got them a comfortable lead. We have no one to blame but ourselves on those. We didn t do a very good job on the PK again. Daniel Paille (No. 7) gave the B s hope with a goal in the final seconds of Period 2, set up by Justin Florek s first NHL point. Then Dougie Hamilton (No. 4) knocked in a rebound at 7:19 of the third to cut the deficit to 3-2. But a questionable interference minor called on the backward-skating Brad Marchand for kicking the lost stick of an Anaheim player cost the B s a power play and a chance to knot the score. We get ourselves back in the game, said Julien. It s 3-2 and we get a power play and then you get a call like that. It s mind-boggling sometimes. The third Ducks power-play goal, by Nick Bonino, made it 4-2. And the home team added a fifth score late, Mathieu Perreault s second of the night. It s one of those games where no matter what you do, they score, said Rask, who wasn t terribly busy, and not at his best on a few of the scoring shots, as the Ducks improved their home record to a ridiculous Already missing key regulars Chris Kelly, Loui Eriksson and Dennis Seidenberg, the Bruins played last night without first-line winger Milan Lucic, who was sick. Carl Soderberg took his spot. The Bruins did everything right in the first period, with the notable exception of scoring. They dominated the period en route to a 16-3 edge in shots. We played a very solid first period, Paille said. I felt we kept pushing all the way through. But we didn t capitalize on the 5-on-5 play, and we were sloppy on the special teams. The Bruins had the lone power play of the first, and spent virtually the entire two minutes set up in the offensive zone, putting pucks on net. But not in the net. In Period 2, the Bruins continued to play pretty well. But the Ducks took command with a pair of power-play scores. At 5:53, with Hamilton off for holding Corey Perry, Teemu Selanne first bumped Zdeno Chara off the puck, then put a nice pass into the right circle for Perreault, whose quick redirect beat Rask over his left shoulder. Then at 8:29, with Johnny Boychuk off for hooking Selanne, the Anaheim power play quickly made it 2-for-2. Perry found a rebound in front and easily put it behind Rask, sinking the B s in a 2-0 hole although they d allowed only eight shots in nearly half a game. The B s had a chance to get back into the game with a power play late in the second. Instead, Reilly Smith and Hamilton absolutely butchered a puck possession in their own end, handing a prime scoring chance to Andrew Cogliano, who snapped a shorthanded goal past Rask to make it 3-0. The B s got on the board with 15.1 seconds left in the period, when a nice 2-on-1 pass by Florek put Paille in alone on the left wing. He deked and pushed a backhander under Hiller. Boston Herald LOADED: Boston Bruins Notebook: Patrice Bergeron makes cut Wednesday, January 8, 2014 Stephen Harris, Bruins Notebook ANAHEIM, Calif. It would have been a bit of a surprise if Bruins center Patrice Bergeron wasn t picked for Team Canada for the upcoming Sochi Olympics, but he nonetheless was excited to get a voice message yesterday morning from general manager (and Canada assistant GM) Peter Chiarelli making his selection official. It s a huge honor to be named to that team, to be part of that group of 25 players, Bergeron, part of Canada s gold medal team four years ago, said before last night s 5-2 loss to the Ducks. To represent your country is always something very special, something I take a lot of pride in. I m looking forward to it. I would not want to be those guys who had to make the difficult decisions. We ve said often we could have two teams and still be very effective. It s a hard task. I m just very honored that I was picked. Bergeron hasn t yet heard what role he ll play on the star-studded team. I haven t had a chance to speak to anyone yet, he said. I m not sure what will be expected. I ll just be myself and play my game, try to be good defensively and good on faceoffs. Penguins star Sidney Crosby, who scored the gold medal-winning goal in 2010 against the U.S., headlines the team. He will be joined up front by Bergeron, Jamie Benn, Jeff Carter, Matt Duchene, Ryan Getzlaf, Chris Kunitz, Patrick Marleau, Rick Nash, Corey Perry, Patrick Sharp, Steven Stamkos, John Tavares and Jonathan Toews. Jay Bouwmeester, Drew Doughty, Dan Hamhuis, Duncan Keith, Alex Pietrangelo, P.K. Subban, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Shea Weber will be on defense. Roberto Luongo, Carey Price and Mike Smith are the goalies. All I can say is there were some real tough decisions that had to be made, said B s coach Claude Julien, a Team Canada assistant who was closely involved in the selection process. There are some good players that are left off the roster right now. You re trying to build the best team possible. You look at all game situations and how players fit. Chara selected Zdeno Chara officially was named to Team Slovakia and will be the captain. It s Chara fourth Olympic selection, and this will be his third time playing. It is a big honor, he said. It s a big thing, one of the biggest if not the biggest sports event. Anytime you can be part of it, it s a huge honor. Being selected as captain is another huge honor.... Tuukka Rask, to the surprise of no one, was named to Team Finland. Well, it s official, he said. Good feeling. It s every player s dream to participate in the Olympics. Now I m one step closer, and I can t wait to go there. Our roster may not be the best out there, but people will expect us to succeed.

The Finns are still sky-high after their championship at the recent world junior tournament. I think people are still celebrating that world junior gold, Rask said.... The B s will send five players to Sochi. Loui Eriksson (concussion) presumably will be ready to play for Sweden, and David Krejci was named Monday to the Czech Republic team. Thornton antsy Shawn Thornton sat out the 14th game of his 15-game suspension last night. He ll miss tomorrow night s game in Los Angeles, then return Saturday in San Jose. I ve been itching (to play) for a while, Thornton said. I can see it now, at least, getting ready for Saturday. Probably since last Saturday I ve been a little more focused and positive as far as trying to get ready for this first game back after having five weeks off. I m sure it s going to be a little bit of an adjustment, but we ll work through it. In his return, Thornton has an advantage on an injured player absent for the same length of time: He s been able to continue skating and working hard. Probably harder than I normally would have, doing extra work every day at the end (of practices), doing extra when the guys aren t around, working out a lot more, he said. So I think conditioning-wise it should be great. It s more just the timing of the game after being out that long. That might be a little bit of an adjustment. Lucic out sick Milan Lucic (illness) was a late scratch and Jordan Caron (back) skated but was unable to go. With the two wingers unavailable, Justin Florek played his second NHL game and the B s went with seven defensemen and 11 forwards. Defenseman Kevan Miller was listed as a fourth-line winger.... Defenseman Dennis Seidenberg, out for the season with a knee injury, underwent surgery to repair his torn ACL and MCL.... Since the start of the season, Ducks winger Corey Perry has 30 game-winning goals, by far the most in the NHL.... Ducks star Ryan Getzlaf has had three four-point games this season. Only one other NHL player has had that many Dallas Tyler Seguin, who has four.... Another interesting stat (via Elias Sports Bureau): Ducks center Andrew Cogliano became just the fifth NHL player to play 500 consecutive games at the start of his career. The last to do it: B s assistant coach Doug Jarvis, then with Montreal. Jarvis holds the NHL ironman record, playing an incredible 964 consecutive games.... At age 43, Ducks winger Teemu Selanne still is grinding. He was held scoreless in 21 of the past 23 games entering last night and had just four goals and seven assists in 34 games. Yet he was named to the Finnish Olympic team for a record-tying sixth time.... Anaheim s Saku Koivu displayed some big league class when he declined his spot on Team Finland, saying it should go to a more deserving player and that his responsibility is to his NHL team. Boston Herald LOADED: Boston Bruins Perreault's 2 goals lead Ducks past Bruins 5-2 Wednesday, January 8, 2014 Associated Press ANAHEIM, Calif. Nearly three months after their home opener, the Anaheim Ducks still haven't lost a game in regulation at Honda Center. Although Jonas Hiller believes there's no secret to how the Ducks keep rolling at home, not even the powerful Boston Bruins could figure out how to end this remarkable streak by the overall NHL leaders. Mathieu Perreault scored two goals, Hiller made 30 saves in his 12th consecutive victory and the Ducks beat Boston 5-2 Tuesday night for their 14th win in 15 games. Perreault, Corey Perry and Nick Bonino scored power-play goals for the Ducks, who improved to in Anaheim during the NHL's fifth-longest home points streak to open a season in the last 41 years. The Ducks started awfully slow, managing just two shots in the first 19 minutes while Boston controlled play, but still ended up with yet another comfortable win after a three-goal second period. "We've proven to ourselves by now that even if we're down or haven't played our best game, we still find a way to win," said Hiller, who hasn't lost since Dec. 3. "Every night somebody is making a contribution." Andrew Cogliano scored short-handed and Teemu Selanne added two assists in Anaheim's eighth consecutive home win, matching its 8-0 streak to open the season. The Ducks opened a nine-point lead over San Jose atop the Pacific Division by scoring a season-high three power-play goals after a long struggle with the man advantage. Hiller, who will represent Switzerland at his second Olympics next month, did much of the rest of the work in his 21st victory. Anaheim already was one of the NHL's most potent teams with an inept power play, but captain Ryan Getzlaf was confident it would improve. "We had been worrying too much about what we had to do instead of just going out and doing it," Getzlaf said. "We're getting good chances out of it, and we know if we play good hockey, we have a chance to win every night." Daniel Paille and Dougie Hamilton scored for the Bruins, who played without forward Milan Lucic for the first time this season due to an illness. Tuukka Rask stopped 15 shots, but the Atlantic Division leaders couldn't overcome their special-teams woes in the opener of a three-game California road trip. "I actually thought we played a great game, but you look at the scoreboard and it's 5-2," Rask said. "They didn't have many chances, but they put them in the net." After a scoreless first period, Anaheim went ahead when Perreault converted a one-timer from Selanne for his eighth goal on a power play. The 43-year-old Selanne, who hadn't scored a point since Dec. 20, was selected to his record-tying sixth Olympic team with Finland earlier in the day. Perry then batted home a loose puck just 10 seconds into the Ducks' second power play for his 24th goal of the season. Anaheim's power play scored on its third consecutive attempt, including Perry's overtime winner against Vancouver on Sunday night, after a 1-for-34 skid. Daniel Winnik and Cogliano generated another goal on pure hustle late in the period, with Winnik chasing down a puck and feeding it to Cogliano for his second short-handed goal of the season. "We have nobody but ourselves to blame on those," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "I thought we didn't do a very good job there on the PK tonight. It set us back, but we battled right to the end, and I wish we would have had a better chance of tying that game up." Paille ended Hiller's shutout bid in the final seconds of the period, getting his fourth goal in five games on a pass from Justin Florek, who scored his first NHL point on the assist. Hamilton then trimmed the Ducks' lead to one goal in the third period with his first goal since Nov. 2 on a high shot through heavy traffic in front of Hiller. But after Brad Marchand short-circuited a late Boston power play with an interference penalty, Getzlaf got the puck below the goal line and found Bonino for his third goal in four games. Perreault then beat Rask again with 2:31 to play. NOTES: Before the game, Anaheim put D Bryan Allen on injured reserve with a lower-body injury and recalled D Nolan Yonkman from the AHL.... Anaheim also scratched F Dustin Penner, who has an upper-body injury.... The 23-year-old Florek, a Northern Michigan product, made his NHL debut Saturday.
