Anaheim Ducks Saku Koivu keeps Ducks rolling with victory over Coyotes His overtime goal wins it, 3-2, and allows Anaheim to extend its club-record winning streak to 10 games. His first-period goal is 250th of his career. Helene Elliott 10:17 PM PST, December 28, 2013 Saku Koivu insisted his tip of Ben Lovejoy's shot 51 seconds into overtime to give the Ducks a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday at Honda Center was "more luck than anything else," but anyone who has watched the Finnish center through his distinguished career knows better. Koivu, who had scored his 250th goal in the first period while the Ducks were shorthanded, works for his good fortune. His diligence and dignity have contributed enormously to establishing a tight connection he has established with wingers Daniel Winnik and Andrew Cogliano on what has become the Ducks' most effective line at both ends of the ice. And his savvy was key Saturday in allowing the Ducks to extend their franchise-record winning streak to 10 games and regain the No. 1 overall spot in the NHL. "It is something to be proud of. We wanted this 10th win," Lovejoy said after the Ducks had stretched their standings-points streak to and goaltender Jonas Hiller tied a franchise record with his eighth consecutive victory. "This was a big one." Koivu and his teammates could have been deflated after the Coyotes pulled even at 2-2 by scoring twice late in the third period, first when Martin Hanzal picked up an odd carom off the boards at 15 minutes 26 seconds and again when Mike Ribeiro deflected Keith Yandle's point shot with 43.8 seconds left and goaltender Thomas Greiss replaced by an extra skater. But they had no time to waste on self-pity. "You're trying to forget what happened," Koivu said. "We had a 2-0 lead and they got a lucky bounce on the first goal. It's one of those things where you're trying to regroup as quick as you can and you knew there was a good chance there was gong to be an overtime, so you start thinking about that. You really don't have a choice then." He chose to lead the team's push for a second point and a home record, keeping the Ducks as the only NHL team that hasn't lost in regulation at home. Koivu beat Antoine Vermette on a faceoff in the first minute of four-on-four play and headed to the net while defensemen Lovejoy and Cam Fowler controlled the puck. Lovejoy shot it and Koivu got enough of it to redirect it past Greiss. "You try to get open and you try to get your stick in there and try to get in front of the goaltender and we got lucky on that one," Koivu insisted. Lovejoy wasn't buying Koivu's attempt to downplay the difficulty of that effort. "I wish I could play every shift the rest of my career with him. He's that good in all facets of the ice," Lovejoy said of the 39-year-old Finn. "He's so good defensively, he makes everything easier and he really had a big game tonight." Koivu had given the Ducks a 1-0 lead at 17:08 of the first period, taking a pass from Winnik and going to the far left side to beat Greiss for his 11th career shorthanded goal. Cogliano made it 2-0 at 5:04 of the third period when he redirected a shot by Winnik, who had gotten a pass from Koivu, and the Ducks appeared to be cruising. But the Coyotes made it 2-1 after Hiller came out to play a dump-in and the puck caromed into the slot, where Hanzal pounced on it. Hiller got a piece of it with his stick but not enough. The standing-room-only crowd of 17,442 groaned when Ribeiro tied it. Inwardly, the Ducks did the same. "For 55 minutes there we were really good and we felt like we weren't giving them much," Cogliano said. "You get an odd goal and you let down a bit but the bottom line is you get the win, no matter how you do it. It's a big two points for us." They couldn't have done it without Koivu, who has four goals and seven points in his last five games. "Even though there are a lot of good things we're trying to find a bit more consistency when things are going well to push it a little more," he said. "But 10 wins is not easy, and is something we can build on." TONIGHT AT SAN JOSE When: 7:30. On the air: TV: Prime Ticket; Radio: 830. Etc.: The Ducks lead the NHL with 31 points on the road, including a six-game road winning streak that's one short of their club record. The Ducks also have points in seven straight road games (6-0-1), also one from tying the club record. The Sharks won the teams' previous meeting this season, 4-3, in a shootout on Nov. 30 at the SAP Center in San Jose. Teemu Selanne won't play in San Jose and the Sharks' Martin Havlat (upper-body injury) is expected to also sit out. LA Times: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Koivu playing like his old self again not making the quick turnaround trip. Kyle Palmieri was scratched despite scoring a goal and an assist in two of his last three games. Orange County Register: LOADED: By ERIC STEPHENS :53:40 ANAHEIM Saku Koivu missed 15 games because of a concussion and believes it took him a few upon returning to again feel like himself on the ice. The veteran Ducks center is looking like a catalyst of late and delivered what might have been his best game of the season Saturday night as he scored twice, the latter being the overtime winner in a 3-2 victory over Phoenix at Honda Center. It was Koivu s first multi-goal game since his hat trick against Dallas on Jan. 10, 2012 and his overtime winner was the 10th of his career. On a night when only deflected shots were going to get by Coyotes goalie Thomas Greiss, Koivu managed to get his stick on Ben Lovejoy s shot from the point after Cam Fowler sent the puck to his defense partner. On a 4-on-4, when you win a faceoff, obviously there s more room on top, Koivu said. I was able to get open in the middle. Those tips there, they re more luck than anything else. You try to get open and try to get your stick in there. Try to get in front of the goaltender. We got lucky on that one. Koivu had a season-high three points and has five in his past two games. The Ducks are since the center returned to the lineup after recovering from a concussion suffered on Oct. 27 in Columbus. His recent production has been emblematic of the entire shutdown line. Andrew Cogliano scored for the second consecutive game while Daniel Winnik had two assists Saturday and has points in six of his past nine contests. He s had a huge last three games, Boudreau said of Koivu. That line, they scored two goals in Washington. Three goals tonight. And yet they check the other team s top line all the time. They re very good right now. In the first period, Koivu delivered his 250th career goal when he surprised Greiss with a quick slap shot as he carried the puck into the offensive zone while killing time off Jakob Silfverberg s high-sticking penalty. I think it s a good number, Koivu said. But when you play with guys like Teemu on your team and he s got almost 700 goals, you kind of forget that. It s nice. I guess I m not known for scoring goals. It s a fairly good number. Lovejoy was effusive in his praise for Koivu afterward. I wish I could play every shift for the rest of my career with him, the defenseman said. He s so good defensively. He makes everything easier and he had a big game tonight. POWER SHORTAGE The Ducks have continued to win despite a power play that has gone dry over the past seven games. They ve gone scoreless with the man advantage in their past 20 chances. Boudreau didn t sound too concerned, particularly since he was pleased with the puck movement and chances the Ducks had. The power play didn t score but I thought we had some great looks, Boudreau said. We re just sort of snake-bit right now. We had three power plays and we had the puck in their zone for about four out of the six minutes and it just didn t go in. We had some really good chances by guys that put the puck in an awful lot. Tonight was one of those nights where it wasn t all over the place. It was actually working, we just didn t succeed on it. NOTES As has been his season-long plan to sit out the second of games on back-to-back nights, Teemu Selanne will not play in San Jose. The winger is

Anaheim Ducks Ducks eye the future after Phoenix victory By ERIC STEPHENS :49:53 ANAHEIM Might the Ducks be making playoff plans in December? Ben Lovejoy, the team s eternally upbeat defenseman, might have dropped a juicy peek into the thoughts of his coach, Bruce Boudreau. Last year, with a month left in the season, Detroit was out of the playoffs, Lovejoy said. And Bruce said that s who we re going to play in the first round. He knows who he thinks we re going to play in the first round already. There is still a full second half of the schedule to play but 10 straight wins and a record might make a team gaze down the road. The Ducks kept rolling Saturday night as Saku Koivu s overtime goal gave them a 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. Koivu s deflection of Lovejoy s point shot capped a big night for the center and allowed the Ducks to extend the NHL s longest win streak this season after letting a two-goal lead get away late in regulation. Asked what opponent Boudreau is predicting for the current Pacific Division leaders, Lovejoy simply said, Nope. You got to ask him. Boudreau had to backpedal a bit. I also prefaced it to say if we get in the playoffs, he said. Evidently I had nothing to do for three days. So I went through the schedule a lot. Koivu scored his 250th career goal while killing off a penalty in the first period and Andrew Cogliano continued the shutdown line s production of late by making it 2-0 with a deflection of Daniel Winnik s shot five minutes into the third. Phoenix scratched out a point when Martin Hanzal scored off a weird carom with 4:34 remaining and Mike Ribeiro got his stick on a Keith Yandle point shot with 43.8 remaining when goalie Thomas Greiss was pulled for an extra attacker. But Koivu made the announced overflow Honda Center crowd of 17,442 roar just 51 seconds into the extra session. The Ducks take a seven-point cushion in the Pacific into another divisional showdown Sunday night at San Jose. A return date against the Sharks is Tuesday back in Anaheim. All these Pacific teams are so good that we re going to have to go through all of them, Lovejoy said. And we want to send a message that we re going to be ready to go in the playoffs too. We need to be good all the time. Orange County Register: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Final: Ducks 3, Coyotes 2 (OT) December 28th, 2013, 7:42 pm posted by ERIC STEPHENS ANAHEIM -- Saku Koivu scored twice, including the winner in overtime as the Ducks kept rolling Saturday night with a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes. Koivu won a faceoff in the offensive zone and got himself in position to deflect in Ben Lovejoy's shot from the point to help the Ducks (28-7-5) extend their franchise-best winning streak to 10 games before an overflow crowd of 17,442 at Honda Center. The Ducks (28-7-5) showed little if any rust as they improved their home record to Phoenix backup Thomas Greiss was strong in goal but couldn't keep the Coyotes from losing for the fourth time in as many games to the Pacific Division leaders. Looking refreshed in their first game off the Christmas holiday break, the Ducks had plenty of jump throughout and put 40 shots on Greiss. Koivu broke through in the first with his 250th career goal while on the penalty kill. Koivu carried the puck through the neutral zone and past the blue line before surprising Greiss with a quick snap shot for his 11th career tally while shorthanded. Andrew Cogliano made it 2-0 early in the third with a redirection of Daniel Winnik's shot but Phoenix ( ) made a stunning comeback on goals by Martin Hanzal and Keith Yandle. The Coyotes got their goal when Michael Stone's dump-in took a weird bounce off the stanchion behind the net and bounced in front while Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller vacated his goal to play the puck. Hanzal put it in off Hiller's stick as he dove to make the save. Yandle tied it up with 43.8 left as the Coyotes pulled Greiss for an extra attacker. Greiss made 37 saves while Hiller stopped 23 shots to win his eighth straight start. Orange County Register: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Saku Koivu, Ducks work overtime to beat Coyotes and win their 10th straight By Elliott Teaford, Daily Breeze Posted: 12/28/13, 9:00 PM PST Saku Koivu won a faceoff in the opening moments of overtime Saturday night at the Honda Center and then drifted into a dangerous patch of ice as Ducks defensemen Ben Lovejoy and Cam Fowler passed the puck between them on the perimeter. Lovejoy wound up and unleashed a blistering shot on goal that the unmarked Koivu deflected past Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Thomas Greiss for the game-winning goal as a sellout crowd of 17,442 celebrated the Ducks 3-2 victory. The Ducks 10th consecutive win had elements of the previous nine, but most of all it featured the sort of resolve that separates good teams from great ones. The Ducks (28-7-5) refused to crack after squandering a two-goal lead in the third period, but charged ahead during overtime. Koivu s goal was his second of the game, pushing his career total to 251, and the third produced by his line Saturday. Andrew Cogliano scored what sure looked like the back-breaking goal at 5 minutes, 4 seconds of the third period. Daniel Winnik added two assists. Jonas Hiller stopped 23 shots for his eighth consecutive victory, tying the club record. Honestly, you try to forget what happened, the 39-year-old Koivu said. We had a 2-0 lead (and lost it). It was one of those things where you try to regroup as quickly as you can. You really don t have a choice. You go right back at it. We got a point, then we went after the second one. On a night when the Ducks top line of Dustin Penner, Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry generated plenty of scoring chances but no goals, the second line of Winnik, Koivu and Cogliano drove a stake through the hearts of the Pacific Division-rival Coyotes ( ). The Ducks combination of resilience and depth were too much for the Coyotes to overcome. Phoenix erased a 2-0 deficit with goals from Martin Hanzal and Mike Ribeiro inside the final five minutes of regulation play. The Ducks regained control in the opening minute of overtime, though. Koivu s OT goal was the 10th of his career. He also assisted on Cogliano s goal. I think the number 10 is magic when you get into streaks because it doesn t happen very often, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said before adding a few moments later, We ll enjoy it for 10 minutes and then get on the plane. Indeed, the Ducks had very little time to celebrate before catching their chartered flight to San Jose for tonight s game against the Sharks. The Ducks reach the midway point of the regular season tonight, with the first of two games this week against San Jose. The Sharks visit the Honda Center on Tuesday. San Jose has been awesome all year and these are the teams we re going to have to beat in the playoffs, Lovejoy said. All these Pacific Division teams are so good, we re going to have to go through all of them. We want to send a message that we re going to be ready to go in the playoffs. We need to be good all the time. LA Daily News: LOADED:

Boston Bruins Bruins' Seidenberg out for season with knee injury AP / December 28, 2013 BOSTON (AP) Boston Bruins defenseman Dennis Seidenberg will miss the rest of the season because of torn knee ligaments. He was injured in the third period Friday night when he became entangled with Ottawa forward Cory Conacher behind the Bruins goal. Seidenberg tore his anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in his right knee. General manager Peter Chiarelli said in a statement Saturday the expected recovery is six to eight months. Seidenberg has a goal and nine assists in 34 games this season. During his career, he has also played for Philadelphia, Phoenix, Carolina and Florida. The Bruins recalled defenseman Zach Trotman from Providence of the AHL and assigned goaltender Niklas Svedberg. Trotman is eligible to play in Saturday night s game at Ottawa Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Dennis Seidenberg out for season with injured right knee Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff December 28, :26 PM Dennis Seidenberg s season is over. Seidenberg has been ruled out for because of a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee. Seidenberg was injured in the third period of last night s 5-0 win over Ottawa. Seidenberg collided with Cory Conacher. Seidenberg needed help returning to the dressing room. Seidenberg was the team s No. 2 defenseman. The left-shot Seidenberg had been playing on the second pairing. In the playoffs, Seidenberg could have moved up to partner with Zdeno Chara like he has since the postseason. The rock-hard defenseman provided flexibility because he could play both sides. Seidenberg was also capable of logging big minutes in even-strength and shorthanded situations. The Bruins recalled Zach Trotman from Providence on an emergency basis. This is Trotman's first NHL recall. The right-shot Trotman was paired with Zdeno Chara for much of training camp. David Warsofsky was recalled from Providence earlier today. To make room for the reinforcements, Niklas Svedberg was assigned to Providence. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Senators surge sends Bruins packing By Fluto Shinzawa Globe Staff December 29, 2013 OTTAWA Dennis Seidenberg: out for the season. Zdeno Chara: unavailable for the night because of an undisclosed injury. Dougie Hamilton: sidelined for maybe another week. Tuukka Rask: yanked after allowing three goals on 12 shots. Zach Trotman: in for his NHL debut, just 30 minutes after arriving at the arena. Despite all that, the Bruins were inches away from claiming at least 1 point on Saturday. The Bruins had a 6-on-4 situation for the final 1:51 of regulation after Ottawa s Zack Smith was called for a faceoff violation. Within that stretch, the Bruins ripped off 10 attempts, including four off the stick of Jarome Iginla, in hopes of tying the game. But only three landed on goal, and the Senators Craig Anderson smothered all three to lock up a 4-3 win. We had some good looks there with two minutes left, Iginla said. We moved it pretty well. Anderson made some good saves. We hit the side of the net. It just didn t go. At 9:42 of the third, the Bruins thought they had taken the lead. Iginla, following up on Milan Lucic s drive to the net, booted the puck across the line. It would have given the Bruins a 4-3 lead. Lucic raised his hands in celebration. Iginla did not. Iginla had shifted his left skate to steer the puck past Anderson. Video review confirmed the no-goal call on the ice. I didn t expect it to be a goal, Iginla said. You don t know when you re on the ice how the [kicking] motion is. The Bruins couldn t score the go-ahead goal. About six minutes later, the Senators did. Torey Krug was trying to hold the offensive blue line, but he couldn t handle the puck. Krug s opponent was Bobby Ryan, Ottawa s most dangerous finisher. Ryan made Krug pay for the bobble. Ryan pulled away and tricked Chad Johnson into thinking he was looking five-hole. Instead, Ryan went to his backhand and snapped the puck past Johnson at 15:25 for the winning goal. Just one of those plays where you get a bad break and it ends up in the back of the net, said Krug, who was on the ice for three of Ottawa s four goals. It s not fun to be on the bad side of that. Krug is a rookie. But in the context of the newbie defense, Krug was a veteran against Ottawa. On Saturday, Krug became the only defenseman to dress for all 39 games. Krug s blue-line company included two former Providence teammates whose travel plans could have been the foundation of a bad road-trip movie. On Friday night, Providence had settled into Glens Falls, N.Y., in preparation for Saturday night s game against Adirondack. That night, David Warsofsky got the news that because of Seidenberg s injury, his presence would be required in Ottawa. But Warsofsky, as well as Nick Johnson (recalled because of Carl Soderberg s unavailability because of concussion-like symptoms), didn t have his passport. With the help of assistant general manager Don Sweeney, who was scouting in Albany, N.Y., that night, Warsofsky and Johnson returned to Providence at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Saturday. Later that morning, with their passports in hand, Warsofsky and Johnson flew to Ottawa from Boston. They arrived early enough in the afternoon for Warsofsky to take a nap. The quick rest paid off. In the third period, Warsofsky tied the game at 3 with his first career NHL goal. The Marshfield native rotated down to the right circle, considered his options, and ripped a slap shot past Anderson at 6:36. I felt a lot more comfortable tonight than I did in my first call-up, said Warsofsky (two shots, three blocked shots in a career-high 18:23 of ice time). I think that was a good thing. I just want to keep improving on that. There was no time to nap for Trotman. On Saturday, Trotman was pulled out of Providence s morning skate. The Bruins needed him because of Chara s condition. Trotman, who had his passport, took a cab from Glens Falls to the Canadian border. Luckily, I didn t have to pick that one up, so I don t know, said Trotman with a smile when asked of the tab. Once through customs, a car service hustled Trotman to the rink. Trotman arrived at 6:30 p.m. and stepped onto the ice just in time to take line rushes in warm-ups. Trotman, wearing No. 42, logged 16:41 of ice time, including 3:06 on the No. 2 power-play unit. Trotman landed three shots and missed with two others. I don t think I actually realized what was going on until about midway through the second period, Trotman said. By then, I was in the swing of things. I was just playing at that point keeping it simple and getting my legs under me. It worked out all right. It was one of the Bruins loopier days. Johnson (17 saves) wasn t even supposed to be in uniform. But Johnson dressed because the Bruins had to assign Niklas Svedberg to make room for their AHL reinforcements. It would have been nice to come out of here with at least a point, said coach Claude Julien. I thought we deserved that much with how hard we competed to get ourselves back in the game. Unfortunately that wasn t the case. We had a lot of stuff happening today. Lot of scrambling to get players here on time. With all of that happening, I think our guys responded well. 14 Boston Bruins Dennis Seidenberg out for year with injured right knee By Fluto Shinzawa Globe Staff December 29, 2013 OTTAWA The Bruins received grim news on Saturday: Their second-best defenseman will not play again this season. Dennis Seidenberg was diagnosed with a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee. His recovery will take 6-8 months. Surgery has yet to be scheduled. It s unfortunate because he s always been one of our better Ds, said Bruins coach Claude Julien. He always seems to step his game up at playoff time. That part, you re definitely going to miss. It s part of the game that s there. You have to understand those things are going to happen every once in a while. Right now, we still feel we have enough good players that they re going to step in at his spot and fill it as best as they can. Seidenberg was hurt Friday when he tangled with Ottawa s Cory Conacher behind the Boston net in the third period of the Bruins 5-0 win. Seidenberg needed help returning to the dressing room. He did not travel to Ottawa for Saturday s rematch. Seidenberg, 32, ends his season with one goal and nine assists in 34 games. Seidenberg was averaging 21:50 of ice time per game, second after Zdeno Chara. This is the second time Seidenberg has had a season cut short because of injury. On April 3, 2010, Seidenberg suffered a torn tendon in his left arm. He missed the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs. It is a loss the Bruins will feel deeply. Seidenberg is a rugged, shift-munching stay-at-homer. The left-shot Seidenberg is just as comfortable on the right side. Seidenberg s game improves in the playoffs. He logged 25:59 of ice time per game during last year s Stanley Cup run. In , Seidenberg averaged 27:37 of action. For most of the last three postseasons, the Bruins united Chara and Seidenberg as their shutdown duo. Chara will be without his usual playoff partner. Chara, already averaging 25:02 of ice time, will have to assume more defensive responsibilities. Before the season, the Bruins had hoped to reduce Chara s regular-season workload. Chara played 24:56 per game last year. Seidenberg had been skating on the second pairing. While Chara drew top forwards, the coaching staff tasked Seidenberg with shutting down opposing second lines. Seidenberg was also a regular on the penalty kill, where he averaged 2:24 of action. Seidenberg was in the last season of his four-year, $13 million contract; his four-year, $16 million extension kicks in next season. We re not going to replace him, said rookie defenseman Torey Krug. He s an unbelievable player for us. He plays such a big role on this team. He s part of the heart of this team. There s a reason we brought him back for the length of his contract. Now we ve just got to do it by committee. There s got to be guys that pick up the slack here and there. It s not just going to be one guy. It s going to be a group effort. It starts from Z all the way down to who we bring up from Providence. Saturday s 4-3 loss marked the first game without Seidenberg. Matt Bartkowski, elevated to top-pairing status because of the absences of Seidenberg and Chara (undisclosed injury, day to day), played a game-high 22:57. Bartkowski had three shots, five hits, and two blocked shots. Soderberg concussed Carl Soderberg didn t make the trip because of concussion-like symptoms. He was injured when he was checked into the glass in the third period Friday. He got dinged up on that hit, said coach Claude Julien. He had some symptoms. We don t know how serious, but serious enough that we left him behind to make sure he s being evaluated. Soderberg missed the first six games of the season because of a sprained ankle. Soderberg, the No. 3 left wing, has five goals and 14 assists in 32 games while averaging 13:37 per appearance. Nick Johnson was brought up on an emergency basis. Johnson was the No. 3 right wing. Matt Fraser, who had been the third-line right wing, switched to fill Soderberg s spot on the left side. Second time around Ryan Spooner, a native of nearby Kanata, made his second NHL appearance in his hometown. On March 21, in his first game in Ottawa, Spooner played just 8:17 with one shot in a 2-1 Bruins win. It was his third career NHL game. I ve been making plays that I m capable of, Spooner said. I was kind of nervous out there. I had the puck on my stick and was trying to get rid of it. Now I feel like the play s kind of slowed down a little bit. I m a little bit more comfortable. I think the last 5-6 games, I ve played a lot better. Spooner had one shot in 11:25 of ice time... Jordan Caron challenged Ottawa tough guy Matt Kassian to a fight. Caron didn t like Kassian s heavy hit on David Warsofsky in the first period. Caron ceded 36 pounds to Kassian, but held his own against the heavyweight... Niklas Svedberg, projected to be Tuukka Rask s backup Saturday, watched the game from the press box instead. Svedberg had to be assigned for the Bruins to be under the 23-player roster maximum... With Chara out, Gregory Campbell was the third alternate captain. Fluto Shinzawa Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Senators slip past Bruins 4-3 AP / December 28, 2013 OTTAWA (AP) The Ottawa Senators rebounded nicely on Saturday night and earned a split of a home-and-home series with the Boston Bruins. Coming off a 5-0 loss to the Bruins on Friday night, the Senators made the most of the rematch as they defeated the Bruins 4-3. Any time you drop a game like that and you get a chance for redemption and you don t take advantage of that things can spiral from there, Bobby Ryan said. Hopefully this is a building block. Ryan broke a 3-3 tie with a goal at 15:25 of the third. We had it in our mind-set all night long that we were going to come out with two points (Saturday), Ryan said. Patrick Wiercioch, Cory Conacher and Zack Smith also scored for the Senators. Craig Anderson stopped 29 shots to earn the victory. Daniel Paille, Jarome Iginla and David Warsofsky scored for the Bruins. Tuukka Rask allowed three goals on 12 shots before being replaced by Chad Johnson, who allowed one goal on 18 shots. Both teams were missing key players, including their captains as Ottawa was without Jason Spezza and the Bruins were without Zdeno Chara. Both sat out with lower body injuries. The Senators got off to a strong start and played well enough to hold off the Bruins. Smith was called for a faceoff violation with 1:51 remaining, leaving Ottawa short-handed but with a 4-3 lead. Still, the Senators held off the hard-pressing Bruins for the win. You never want to put your team in that position, but I had faith in the guys killing and obviously Anderson was playing very well, Smith said. That was a tough one to take. It s not a call that s called consistently so I think someone has to get on the same page about that one. If they re going to call it they have to call it all the time I think. Anderson was solid as the Senators held off the Bruins late in the third. They had a 6-on-4 there and they were moving the puck pretty good and we got a couple of key blocks and that was the difference, Anderson said. When you re out-manned like that anything can happen. Anderson said the team wasn t feeling good after Friday s loss and says the fact they were able to rebound with a win shows a lot of character. It s all about how you respond, Anderson said. It s not about what happens to you it s how you respond and I think we came out here and we responded in the right way. Now the key is we have to respond again going forward. Ryan scored the winner after forcing a turnover at the Ottawa blue line and breaking in alone, beating Johnson with a high backhand. Earlier, the Senators caught a break when what would have been Iginla s second goal of the game was reviewed and ruled to be kicked in, keeping the game tied 3-3. Iginla said he wasn t all that surprised that the goal was called back. I didn t really expect it to be a goal, Iginla said. I knew (the puck) was coming to my foot, but I was hoping it wasn t a kicking motion. At the same time I understand the call, but you re always hoping for the best for sure. Bruins coach Claude Julien said his team played well and probably deserved a better fate. Our guys battled hard, Julien said. It would have been nice to come out of here with at least a point. I thought we deserved that much with how hard we competed to get ourselves back in the game, but unfortunately that wasn t the case. Ottawa opened the scoring at 7:04 of the first as Wiercioch jumped into the play to grab a rebound and beat Rask through the legs. The Bruins tied the game on Paille s fourth of the season at 12:06 as he sidestepped Erik Karlsson along the sideboards and beat Anderson. Conacher made it 2-1 for the Senators at 14:28 when he tipped a Kyle Turris backhand. The Senators made it 3-1 just 29 seconds into the second on Smith s short-handed goal. It also marked the end of Rask s night. Anderson made several good saves through the second, but had no chance on Iginla s 12th of the season as he was left all alone at the side of the net for an easy tap in. Warsofsky, with his first in the NHL, tied it 3-3 at 6:36 of the third with a shot from the side boards. Notes: C Jason Spezza and D Chris Phillips missed the game with a lower body injury. In Spezza and Phillips absence Kyle Turris and Erik Karlsson wore an A'. D Eric Gryba was a healthy scratch for the Senators.... The Bruins announced D Dennis Seidenberg will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. D Zdeno Chara was a late scratch and is listed day to day. The Bruins were also without C Carl Soderberg. D Zach Trotman was recalled on an emergency basis and made his NHL debut. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Defenseman Dennis Seidenberg lost for the season with ACL, MCL injury Saturday, December 28, 2013 By: Steve Conroy OTTAWA--The news on Dennis Seidenberg's injured right knee was about as bad as could be expected for Bruins' fans. Bruins' GM Peter Chiarelli announced this afternoon that the workhorse defenseman will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL and MCL that he suffered late in the third period of Friday's 5-0 Bruins' win over the Senators when he got entangled with the Sens' Cory Conacher behid the Bruin net. His recovery time is estimated at 6-to-8 months. The B's had already called up David Warsofsky to replace Seidenberg for the short-term, but they also brought up Zach Trotman on an emergency basis. Though a right shot, Trotman -- at 6-foot-3, 219-pounds -- at least seems like a better fit as a Seidenberg replacement for the long-term, if the B's choose not to make a trade for more experienced help. Kevan Miller, who has played well in his nine games with the B's, is also available to the B's but Chiarelli chose to go with Trotman, who has a hard shot and played well in training camp. In 22 games with Providence this year, Trotman has totals and is plus-11. He is eligible to play tonight. To make room for Trotman, goalie Niklas Svedberg was sent back to Providence. Whether the B's look for defensive help on the trade front or not, they'd be hard-pressed to replace the sturdy Seidenberg. Seidenberg and captain Zdeno Chara have teamed up to make a terrific shutdown defensive pair once the playoffs have begun in recent years. The B's have managed to survive with a number of injuries this year, but the loss of Seidenberg is a major blow to their Stanley Cup hopes. No word yet on when Seidenberg will undergo surgery. Seidenberg signed a four-year, $16 million contract extension at the start of the season. In 34 games, he had totals and was plus-11. Boston Herald LOADED:
