Anaheim Ducks Ducks' Corey Perry remains sidelined by flu Lance Pugmire Goalie Frederik Andersen is expected to return Friday against Arizona Ducks right wing Corey Perry will need at least one more game off to recover from flu, Coach Bruce Boudreau said Friday following the team s morning skate without Perry at Honda Center. Perry, leading the NHL with 11 goals, was a late scratch Wednesday along with first-line mate Ryan Getzlaf before the Ducks (10-3-1) lost in overtime to the New York Islanders. Getzlaf didn t participate at the optional skate Friday morning but is expected to play tonight against the Arizona Coyotes (5-6-1), Boudreau said. I don t think Perry will be around for tonight, Boudreau said. The coach said he hadn t spoken to Perry as of 11 a.m. I just know where he is, know he s not feeling up to par yet, Boudreau said. ANDERSEN FIRST OFF: This time it matters that Ducks goalie Frederik Andersen left the ice first at Friday s skate. After he was first off before Wednesday s game, an indication he would start that night, Andersen huddled with Boudreau and the coach opted to give Andersen (7-1) another game off, starting veteran backup Jason LaBarbera. Andersen suffered leg tightness in last Friday s overtime win in Dallas, and fellow goalie John Gibson is sidelined six weeks with a groin injury. Andersen and Boudreau said knowing the goalie is now at 100% clinched the decision that he'll start. THEY NEED ONE: The Ducks have just one point to show for their last two home games, an unusual occurrence for a team that set a franchise record for home victories last season, going It s a good time to get back, Ducks forward Andrew Cogliano said. Arizona has given up 44 goals this season, its minus-13 goals differential the third-worst in the NHL. LA Times: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Ducks lose in shootout with Coyotes, 3-2, after blowing two-goal lead Lance Pugmire Coyotes beat Ducks in a shootout after overcoming two-goal deficit Chances and a point slipped away from the Ducks on Friday, as they let a two-goal lead vanish and lost in a shootout to the Arizona Coyotes. If we score the goals we should be scoring, we win the game, said Ducks forward Andrew Cogliano, among those lamenting a missed opportunity in the 3-2 defeat at Honda Center. If not, you give the other team an opportunity to get some life and squeeze it out like they did. Arizona (6-6-1) claimed its third consecutive victory thanks to shootout goals by Mikkel Boedker and Sam Gagner after misses by Ducks forward Devante Smith-Pelly and center Ryan Kesler. After Jakob Silfverberg gave Anaheim (10-3-2) a 1-0 lead in the shootout, Kesler missed his try high and wide, capping a frustrating night in which he put six shots on goal but was denied on each. It got away from us for six minutes, Kesler said. We were the better team. We deserved better. He was referring to his team's 2-0 lead that vanished when Arizona scored twice in a 58-second span early in the second period. First, Coyotes forward Ron Klinkhammer deflected a pass/shot by teammate Martin Hanzal past Ducks goalie Frederik Andersen. Then, Shane Doan became the Ducks' most prolific goal-scoring opponent by one-timing a shot to Andersen's left. Doan now has 33 career goals against Anaheim, passing Brett Hull, who scored 32 in the opposing sweaters of St. Louis, Dallas and Detroit. Arizona goalie Mike Smith closed the first period by stopping Kesler on a breakaway, and then stood up to all 25 shots he faced in the final two periods, using his right pad to deny Emerson Etem in the second and then watching a teammate interrupt another up-close Kesler shot. Devante Smith-Pelly, Ryan Getzlaf [Smith] played well, he kept them in it, Kesler said. A year after leading the NHL in goals, averaging more than three a game, the Ducks' average is 2.1. In addition to missing NHL goals leader Corey Perry for a second straight game with flu symptoms, several droughts continued. Had so many grade-a chances, we've got to score those, Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said. Squeezing the sticks tight. I can see plays that would normally go in not going in. Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler left the ice with an apparent left leg injury in the third period after a collision with Arizona's Martin Erat. Boudreau said his condition will be evaluated by Saturday. The bad turn was a surprise after Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf returned from his own flu outage and scored 5:02 into the game. Getzlaf took a pass from falling defenseman Sami Vatanen and shot from one knee to score on a power play. Vatanen has contributed each of his six assists this season with a man advantage. Then, Anaheim forward Matt Beleskey set up his seventh goal by pounding Arizona defenseman Connor Murphy to the glass and swiping the puck from him. Silfverberg had a good look that Smith stopped, only to fall forward and watch Beleskey beat the goalie high for the 2-0 lead. The Ducks outhit the Coyotes in the first, forcing nine giveaways. Consistency's something we have to address right now, Getzlaf said. You've got to take advantage in these home games against divisional opponents. LA Times: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Ducks' Cogliano knows he's capable of more ERIC STEPHENS Nov. 7, 2014 Updated: 10:21 p.m. ANAHEIM It s already known that Andrew Cogliano will be there every day, and a high level of consistency has also arrived with his presence eight years into the league. The offense, however, will come and go. Cogliano has a different mindset as a grizzled veteran now, no longer burdened by the expectations of being a big-time point producer as a first-round draft pick. But the speedy winger isn t satisfied these days. Cogliano has a shorthanded tally on Oct. 17 against Minnesota as his lone goal to go with three assists in his first 14 games entering the Ducks home game Friday night against Arizona. A golden chance against the Coyotes came in the third period but he missed wide. The slow start particularly jumps out after Cogliano busted out for a career-high 21 goals last season while also getting 42 points to finish just three short of a personal best set as a rookie with Edmonton. In short, Cogliano figures he can do more. I put a lot of pressure on myself, Cogliano said. Probably too much, maybe. Probably a little more than I m supposed to or I should. But I think that s how I am. That s how my personality is. The concern over the lack of offense isn t an obsession. Cogliano, who s now played in 555 consecutive games, doesn t look at it from a numbers standpoint. He has changed his game over time, becoming an ace penalty killer and effective defender. It is just that goals remain the most visible sign of a player s ability to make a difference. And they still decide who wins in the end. It s a matter of contributing, Cogliano said. It s not about wanting to have points. I m not going to be a 70-point guy. But when you re scoring and making plays that create goals, you know you re contributing. Was his first 20-goal season an aberration? Possibly. Cogliano doesn t hesitate to say that he was able to cash in more on the available opportunities and that things went my way. It has been an adjustment for Cogliano to largely play with veterans in Saku Koivu and Daniel Winnik to playing with new linemates like Ryan Kesler or young guys such as William Karlsson and Emerson Etem as he did on Friday. The thing Cogliano won t do is sit back and wait for his production to come about on its own. Or feel sorry if the struggles continue. When you re doing things offensively, you feel like you re adding to the winning of the team, he said. Am I on the power play or am I in major offensive situations? No. I m a guy that s supposed to be dependable, play at both ends of the rink, play strong defensively, help the penalty kill and contribute offensively. The more I do things away from the puck, the more I play well defensively and play the right way, I think the offense will come. ALLEN MAKES SEASON DEBUT Defenseman Bryan Allen made his season debut after being set back by a hamstring injury and other ailments incurred right before the opener. Allen skated alongside Sami Vatanen, with whom he played regularly last season. It s been probably too long for sure, Allen said. Allen got ready for action by playing in two games last weekend for Norfolk (Va.), the Ducks AHL team. Injuries to Ben Lovejoy and Mark Fistric have afforded him an opportunity to get some playing time. I think it was good to test some of the injuries I ve had and make sure there were no issues going forward. And put it all behind me and move forward from that, Allen said. HEATLEY SCRATCHED Dany Heatley was scratched for the third time in five games. Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau flatly said that the veteran needs to get his game going now that he has recovered from the groin muscle injury that put him out for the first month. As a veteran, he had all of training camp until the end of it, Boudreau said. He s worked hard. So easing in it s not like (it s) let s wait five or six games to see if he s ready to play. Veterans know what they have to do to be ready to play all the time. I don t believe there s an easing in process or anything. Orange County Register: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Ducks pay for lapses in shootout loss to Coyotes ERIC STEPHENS Nov. 7, 2014 Updated: 11:21 p.m. ANAHEIM A lapse or two here, a missed chance or several there and the Ducks are now staring at their first losing streak. As losing streaks go, there is little shame in dropping two games in a row and gaining a point in each defeat. But the Ducks will lament their inability to put away Arizona on Friday night, falling to the Coyotes in a 3-2 shootout in front of 16,235 at Honda Center. In the shootout, Sam Gagner and Mikkel Boedker scored on Ducks goalie Frederik Andersen, who was making his first start in a week after recovering from tightness in his leg. Andersen made 23 saves in regulation and overtime. Arizona goalie Mike Smith was better, stopping 37 shots in a strong performance as only Ryan Getzlaf and Matt Beleskey put shots by him, both in the first period. Smith allowed a goal to Jakob Silfverberg to start the shootout but stopped Devante Smith-Pelly. Ryan Kesler had a chance to keep the shootout going but fired wide as the Ducks (10-3-2), who played without a flu-ridden Corey Perry for a second straight game, dropped their second straight. They nevertheless have gained at least a point in their past four. We had opportunities to score goals and we weren t able to get them by him, Getzlaf said. (Smith) made some saves. We missed some shots. That s the way games go. An effective first 20 minutes was rewarded on the scoreboard. Getzlaf, who also had the flu and missed Wednesday s loss to the New York Islanders, hammered in a power-play goal from the left circle for a 1-0 lead. Beleskey doubled it by chipping a rebound over a fallen Smith. But their high level of play dropped off in the opening minutes of the second and Arizona (6-6-1) responded. Rob Klinkhammer directed in a pass from Martin Hanzal off the half-wall and Shane Doan snapped a wrist shot over Andersen's glove less than a minute later. It s a couple of mental mistakes, Getzlaf said. Pucks in the back of our net and it s 2-2. We did a good job hanging in there and getting another point. But you better take advantage of these games you have on your home ice against divisional opponents. Defenseman Cam Fowler left the game midway through the third and did not return. Television replays showed that Fowler appeared to get his left skate caught in a rut on the ice as he was delivering a check. He s day to day with a lower-body injury right now, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. We ll re-evaluate tomorrow and take it from there. Orange County Register: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Healthier Anaheim Ducks fall in a shootout to the Arizona Coyotes Elliott Teaford 11/08/14, 12:21 AM Center Ryan Getzlaf returned to the Ducks lineup after a bout with flu-like symptoms. Right wing Corey Perry couldn t make it back because he was still ill. Goaltender Frederik Andersen recovered from leg tightness and rejoined his teammates for Friday s game against the Arizona Coyotes. So, the Ducks looked almost whole again. In theory, anyway. In practice, they played a second consecutive disjointed game and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Coyotes in a shootout at the Honda Center. Their quest for a more perfect 60-minute game continues, with reasons to be encouraged and discouraged after a second consecutive defeat. I think it got away from us for six minutes, Ducks center Ryan Kesler said. We were the better team tonight. We deserved better. It s a shootout loss. We would have won that game in overtime if we kept going. It s a shootout loss. We were the better team tonight. Said Getzlaf: We should have done better throughout the whole game and played consistently, which is something we have to address right now. It s a couple of mental mistakes and the pucks are in the back of our net. Perhaps it was a little too easy for the Ducks at the start, when they built a 2-0 lead on a power-play goal by Getzlaf and an even-strength strike from Matt Beleskey. They outshot the Coyotes 10-2 at one point in the first period and seemed to be in a constant state of attack. The Coyotes rallied with two goals in the opening five minutes of the second period, however. The Ducks seemed to be skating through mud for a few shifts and they paid the price as Rob Klinkhammer and Shane Doan scored in a 58-second span for the Coyotes. Mikkel Boedker then scored the decisive goal in a three-round shootout for Arizona (6-6-1). The Ducks are , and remained atop the NHL s overall standings with 22 points. A little frustrated, Ducks winger Andrew Cogliano said of the team s postgame mood. I thought we deserved better. Other than five or six minutes in the second, I thought we played pretty good. It comes down to missed opportunities on our end. You score goals you should be scoring, you win the game. Kesler and Cogliano had several quality scoring chances that could have extended the Ducks lead or put them ahead after the Coyotes rally. Kesler couldn t beat Arizona goalie Mike Smith on a point-blank try in the closing seconds of the first period. Cogliano misfired on a 2-on-0 break. The Ducks outshot the Coyotes by and outplayed them for extended stretches. In the end, the result was the same as during a 3-2 overtime loss Wednesday to the New York Islanders. The Ducks gained one point in the standings, but couldn t pull out the second one. We did a good job of hanging in there, Getzlaf said. We got another point. You ve got to take advantage of these games. We had opportunities to score goals. He made some saves. We missed some shots. That s the way games go. I felt OK. It came around as the game went along. 9 Arizona Coyotes Game Day: Arizona Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks Sarah McLellan 2:16 p.m. MST November 7, 2014 Possible Coyotes lines: Rieder-Vermette-Doan Klinkhammer-Hanzal-Erat Korpikoski-Gagner-Boedker McMillan-Vitale-Crombeen Ekman-Larsson-Michalek Yandle-Murphy Gormley-Stone Smith Potential scratches: Summers, Schlemko and Chipchura. Injury update: Winger Dave Moss is week-to-week with an upper-body injury after blocking a shot with his hand. More Coyotes: Offense picking up, but better defending still tops Coyotes' needs Possible Ducks lines: Maroon-Getzlaf-Silfverberg Heatley-Kesler-Smith-Pelly Beleskey-Karlsson-Cogliano Etem-Thompson-Jackman Fowler-Vatanen Lindholm-Beachemin Stoner-Allen Andersen Potential scratches: Perry, Manson and Rakell. Injury update: Winger Corey Perry (flu). On the Ducks: "Obviously, they're a team to beat," defenseman Keith Yandle said. "They got a lot of great players -- two of probably the best players in the league in (Ryan) Getzlaf and Perry. So it's one of those games you know you gotta put the work boots on and get to work. Not only are they great players, but they play in the hard areas and it's going to be a tough test for us and we have to be at our best." The Coyotes have won two straight. "We have to keep improving on the things we've done the last couple of games," coach Dave Tippett said. "Obviously, 5-on-5 scoring has been a little better. We've defended better. Some areas to clean up are still less penalties and the penalty kill. But, really, we're just trying to push our group forward. We recognize the challenge from every team we're playing, but we want to play better as a group and hopefully the results will follow." On defenseman Connor Murphy's evolution: "He's a good young player," Tippett said. "The experience he's getting, there's going to be hiccups in his game. With a young player on defense, that's just the way it is in this game. He's a real competitive kid. Smart, plays situations well and is just a good balance for Keith. Keith needed a guy we know can back Keith up when he's up the ice, and Connor takes that responsibility and defends very well. Good young player. He continues to grow. He's going to be a really good player." On keeping eight defensemen on the roster: "Knock on wood you never want to talk about injuries, but you look at how many teams around the league right now are going through struggles with injury on defense," Tippett said. "So we have good depth in that position. We need to get (Brandon) Gormley up and running and see where he's at. I like our depth there. I have no issues with it right now." -Center Sam Gagner is a point shy of Winger Mikkel Boedker has four goals and an assist in two games against Pacific Division opponents this season. -Goalie Mike Smith is with two shutouts, a 2.88 goals-against average and.899 save percentage in 17 career games against the Ducks. -Winger Brandon McMillan began his NHL career with Anaheim, tallying 11 goals and 26 points in 91 games. -The Ducks have earned points in 11 of their last 13 games. -The Ducks have won five straight over the Coyotes after sweeping the season series last year. -Captain Ryan Getzlaf has 53 points in 51 career games against Arizona. -The Ducks rank third in the NHL in goals-against (1.93). 10 Arizona Coyotes Arizona Coyotes roar back, top Anaheim Ducks in shootout Sarah McLellan 11:33 p.m. MST November 7, 2014 ANAHEIM Better habits had started to settle into their play and a two-game win streak spiked their confidence, but a meeting with the NHL's best at this juncture still seemed to be too premature of a test for the Coyotes. The Ducks paced the league with 21 points and had won all five meetings with the Coyotes last season. But, at one point, adversity used to favor this team, and the Coyotes showed Friday that it still could as they climbed out of an early two-goal hole to edge the Ducks 3-2 in a shootout Friday in front of 16,235 at Honda Center for their third straight win. "We gotta keep building our team," coach Dave Tippett said. "What you do is you build the belief of your team that you can win. Sometimes it's not pretty." Goalie Mike Smith was perhaps at his best this season, making 37 saves with 15 coming in the third period and overtime to pull the Coyotes into a shootout where Sam Gagner and Mikkel Boedker scored for the Coyotes. Jakob Silfverberg beat Smith in the Ducks' first attempt, but Devante Smith-Pelly and Ryan Kesler were blanked. "When we needed big saves, he gave us big saves," Tippett said. "That's a great sign." The Ducks were in charge at the beginning as they assembled a two-goal lead in a brief 3:47. Pressure in the Coyotes zone led to Gagner committing a tripping penalty and on the ensuing power play, a wide-open Ryan Getzlaf one-timed a pass as he fell to his knee at 5:02 of the first. The goal marked the sixth consecutive game the Coyotes have given up a power-play goal and even though the Ducks were blanked in their other three chances, the Coyotes have allowed eight goals in their last 20 kills. The Coyotes, meanwhile, went 0 for 3 on the power play. The Ducks continued to pursue the puck and the Coyotes with speed and physicality and that led to their second goal. Matt Beleskey started the play by pushing Connor Murphy off the puck along the boards, and he finished it by putting a rebound over Smith at 8:49. "Obviously they came out with so much speed early and were kind of dictating the play," captain Shane Doan said. But before the period was over, the Coyotes found their fight and they took hold of the reigns to eventually match the Ducks' output. "We just weren't competing at the level we needed to," Tippett said. At 3:55 of the second, Rob Klinkhammer tipped a Martin Hanzal shot from the half-wall past goalie Frederik Andersen, who totaled 23 saves. Only 58 seconds later, Doan used a blistering wrist shot off the rush to beat Andersen glove-side and tie it at 2 his 33rd career goal against the Ducks, more than any other player who's faced Anaheim. The Ducks could have pulled away in the third as they went to the power play three times, but Smith was the difference. He made 12 saves in that period alone. "That's some things we've been doing all year that have put us behind the eight ball," Tippett said about the string of penalties. "Luckily for us, we worked through those. The penalty kill was strong. Mike Smith was excellent in goal." The Coyotes conclude this back-to-back set Saturday at home against the Islanders and despite a heavy workload Friday, Smith will be back between the pipes. Considering he was vital for the Coyotes against the Ducks, perhaps giving Smith another opportunity to deliver isn't a bad decision. "That's really good for the whole psyche of our team when you see him play like that," Tippett said. Smith's puck-handling skills outside the crease are usually a strength of his, but he looked shaky against the Ducks. Twice the Ducks almost scored after bobbles by Smith, but that didn't deter Smith as he still roved to play the puck. A short-memory is probably a must for being a mobile goaltender, but it's probably also smart to be picky about when he leaves the crease. Doing too much can sometimes be counterproductive. Saturday's game Islanders at Coyotes When: 6 p.m. Where: Gila River Arena. TV/radio: FSAZ/KTAR-AM (620). Islanders update: This is the last stop of a five-game road trip for the Islanders. After losing the first two games outscored 8-1 the Islanders have won two in a row. They edged the Ducks in overtime 3-2 Wednesday and beat the Kings 2-1 in a shootout Thursday. Captain John Tavares leads the team with 15 points, while winger Kyle Okposo and center Brock Nelson have 14. Nelson has a team-high seven goals. The Islanders rank sixth in the NHL with an average of three goals per game. Arizona Republic LOADED:

Arizona Coyotes Arizona Republic LOADED: Arizona Coyotes winger Brandon McMillan returns to his first NHL home Sarah McLellan 10:08 p.m. MST November 7, 2014 ANAHEIM Coyotes winger Brandon McMillan has walked the bowels of Honda Center more than any other arena in his career, but Friday was the first time he ended up under a nameplate in the visitors' locker room. After gaining entrance to the NHL with the Ducks, playing his first career game on their home ice, McMillan hadn't been back since the team cut ties with him in But it was that change of address to the Coyotes that has seemed to give him stable footing in the league. "I definitely learned that you have to be consistent every night and play the way you need to play to stay here in the NHL," he said. McMillan split part of three seasons between Anaheim and the American Hockey League after the team drafted him 85th overall in In , he tallied 11 goals and 21 points in 60 games with the Ducks, but opportunities diminished after that. He was eventually traded to the Coyotes at the 2013 deadline in exchange for center Matthew Lombardi. "I wasn't playing well," McMillan said. "Once you play in the NHL, you want to be there so bad, sometimes you just don't do the right things when you're down in the minors." McMillan parlayed a February call-up with the Coyotes last season into a full-time gig that he has yet to relinquish. This season, he's formed a steady duo with center Joe Vitale on the fourth line and been a go-to penalty killer for coach Dave Tippett. "He's a fearless penalty killer, will block shots, do things right," Tippett said. "So he's a good role player that in today's NHL, players that can play fast, play smart are valuable players." Like most players, McMillan never anticipated a trade from the team that drafted him, and the move surprised him. But now that he's settled in with the Coyotes, he's grateful for the decision. "You always only want to play for one team," McMillan said. "But that doesn't happen. (It's) very rare in this business. So things happen, and sometimes it's time to move on, and I think it was best for me, for sure." Bugged out After missing Wednesday's game because of the flu, Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf returned to the lineup against the Coyotes, but linemate Corey Perry was still battling the bug and sat out a second straight game. And the Ducks aren't sure if the illness is done working its way through the locker room. "The guys have all had flu shots," coach Bruce Boudreau said. "They know all about the germs and everything else. We take precautions for it, but if all it was precaution, then no one would have the flu and people get it." The Ducks aren't the first team this season to have its players getting sick. Both the Wild and Blues had bacterial infections work down their rosters in October. "It's one of those things you just gotta try to keep up with your vitamins like Hulk Hogan says and be smart and wash your hands, especially when you're on flights, too," defenseman Keith Yandle said. "It kind of spreads around a little bit that way. It's tough to hide from, but you gotta do your best." Islanders update: This is the last stop of a five-game road trip for the Islanders.

Boston Bruins Bruins Torey Krug well enough to practice Fluto Shinzawa November 07, 2014 WILMINGTON With a swift backhand swipe, Zach Parise slashed Torey Krug across the left hand Oct. 28 as the Boston defenseman snapped a shot on goal. It was a play that happens all the time. Referee Wes McCauley didn t deem it worthy of a penalty. But the pain Krug felt he shook his hand after the impact immediately signaled that his glove did not do enough to protect his left pinkie from Parise s slash. The harm it caused has knocked Krug out of the lineup for the last four games, an injury that happened when Zdeno Chara (knee), Kevan Miller (shoulder), and Matt Bartkowski (confidence) had already been felled by their respective problems. Pretty bad, Krug said of the damage. It s a freak accident. You get slashed all the time. It caught me in the perfect spot. It s not a good feeling. You could see my reaction on the ice. Ten days later, Krug s pinkie remains under wraps. But it has progressed to the point where Krug was able to participate in his first full practice Friday at Ristuccia Arena. The offensive-minded defenseman could be cleared to play Monday against New Jersey if the injury continues to heal. Krug started the practice on defense. He finished it as a forward on the No. 2 line alongside Brad Marchand and Reilly Smith. Patrice Bergeron, the usual second-line center, went through an off-ice workout instead of practicing. Krug has two goals and four assists in 11 games. Three of his 6 points are on the power play. He s averaging 20:28 of ice time per game, fourth-most on the team. The Bruins are without Krug. But for most of the last two games, they have struggled with their breakouts. They could use the defenseman s vision, pace-pushing skill, and puck-retrieving ability. Krug will need his hands to return to game level quickly if he is to help in those areas. I play a skilled game, Krug said. You want to play with the puck. Obviously your hands are a big part of that. It s just about adjusting to that. I ll be all right. Krug stickhandled and shot pucks in practice. He did not take any one-timers, one of his go-to tools on the point on the power play. The main part is just mental, Krug said. It feels good. You ve got to get over the mental hump where you re worried about getting slashed again or something like that. Gripping the stick definitely creates some challenges. But it s feeling good. I m comfortable with it right now. As long as it keeps progressing, I ll be happy. Warsofsky injured While Krug practiced, David Warsofsky did not, because of an undisclosed injury. Coach Claude Julien said he does not expect the defenseman to be available any time soon. Warsofsky played 15:05 in the Bruins 5-2 win over Edmonton Thursday. He initiated Reilly Smith s first-period goal by banking an outlet pass off the boards to Brad Marchand. If Krug receives clearance, he will replace Warsofsky against the Devils. If Krug is unavailable, Bartkowski would dress. Bartkowski has been a healthy scratch for the last four games. Krejci sits out David Krejci returned to action Thursday after missing two games because of an undisclosed injury. He assisted on Milan Lucic s empty-net goal. But Krejci didn t practice Friday. Such absences, whether from practices or games, might be in Krejci s future as he manages his injury. I think it s just a matter of giving him some time here to let him deal with our medical staff and himself, Julien said. I anticipate him being fine here. We ve got one of the best medical staffs in the league here in Boston. We take advantage of that. In my mind, he ll be fine. We ve just got to give it a little bit of time here. Chris Kelly practiced between Lucic and Seth Griffith. Against the Oilers, Kelly started as the No. 4 left wing, then moved up to the third line next to Carl Soderberg and Loui Eriksson. Gagne got a break Simon Gagne was back on the fourth line with Gregory Campbell and Daniel Paille Friday. The night before, Gagne was a healthy scratch. The veteran forward has one goal and no assists in 10 games while averaging 11:30 of ice time. It s not like it was a surprise, Gagne said of the scratch. I ll take it on the positive side. I ve been playing 10 games in a row. The last two games, I ve felt a little more tired. So maybe now having the night off yesterday will help the whole body feel energized again.... The Bruins will not skate Saturday. They will practice Sunday to prepare for Monday against the Devils. The game will conclude a four-game homestand... Miller skated with strength and conditioning coach John Whitesides before practice. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Third-period surge lifts Bruins over Oilers Amalie Benjamin November 07, 2014 Carl Soderberg is in the perfect spot to watch Dougie Hamilton s shot beat Ben Scrivens for a 4-2 Bruins lead in the third. The credit, it seems, should go to a broken stick. Just before the outburst that decided Thursday night s game between the Bruins and Edmonton Oilers, Dougie Hamilton fractured one, giving rise to a change in play, a change in luck, a change in something in favor of the home team. It was all because I broke my stick, Hamilton explained with a smile. I had a bad stick and broke it, and it kind of turned my game around. Hamilton and the Bruins erupted after that, with three goals in 2:34, turning a one-goal deficit into a two-goal lead in a 5-2 win. Boston ended up scoring four goals in the final nine minutes, for its fourth straight win overall and 13th straight win over Edmonton. We were just rolling and bounces and everything, said Hamilton, who had a goal and two assists in the spurt. I don t think it was really special, more just bounces that went our way. That was a significant difference from earlier in the game, when the Bruins saw two potential goals wiped out by quick whistles by referees, one in the second period, one 8:03 into the third. By that point, the Bruins trailed, 2-1, and could have been forgiven for getting frustrated, given that, as Carl Soderberg said, We should have two goals there. That s just the name of the game, coach Claude Julien said. Referees lose sight of the puck, they have to blow the whistle. So when you re going through a little bit of tough luck like that, it s nice to see that your guys don t stray away from their game. If anything, I thought we picked up our game and got ourselves back into it, obviously tying it up and winning it. So instead of getting frustrated, they scored. And scored. And scored. And scored. The Bruins had 14 shots on goal in the third period, and made four of them count, starting with a loose puck that Loui Eriksson picked up and put past Ben Scrivens at 11:04 for his third of the season and first after eight scoreless games. Just 1:25 later while on the power play, Patrice Bergeron drove to the net and, as he tumbled to the ice, dished to Soderberg just beyond the crease in one of the prettier moves of the season. Soderberg scored, his fourth of the season. But they weren t done. The Bruins got another power play when Nikita Nikitin tripped Bergeron as he made the pass and converted on that, too. Hamilton picked up his third point with a goal that was initially awarded to Soderberg. The Bruins had done a lot of damage in very little time. That was our strength last season and the seasons before that, it was always the Bruins strength to win those games, Soderberg said. When we were struggling we didn t have that confidence to finish off those games and get a win, so hopefully we get more confidence and can win those games in the future. The turnaround made up for the first 40 minutes, in which the Bruins had done little and shown less. They had allowed the first goal of the game at 14:49 of the first, got one back on a Reilly Smith score his first after a nine-game goal-less streak at 18:45 of the first, then went down again on a Mark Arcobello goal at 1:44 of the third off a rebound that Tuukka Rask called kind of my mistake. At least the guys like me still, so they started playing and wanted to score a goal, said Rask, who made 24 saves. They scored four, all after Hamilton broke that stick. The win gave the Bruins a 5-1 record without Zdeno Chara, a loss that was supposed to be devastating. And it has been. The Bruins have played a lot of bad hockey in the stretch, but they ve also survived. I guess that s what you want from your guys, to respond that way, Julien said, while adding that there s a lot more untapped potential with our team as a whole. Our guys have done a good job of working well together and just knowing that we ve got to work that much harder. I m hoping this will pay off in the long run with getting some good habits going with some of those injuries, and hopefully continuing to bring those good habits with us once those guys are back. 14 Boston Bruins David Krejci returns for Bruins but still not 100 percent Amalie Benjamin November 07, 2014 David Krejci didn t shy away from contact in his return to the Bruins lineup, as Oilers goalie Ben Scrivens can attest. In the final minutes of Thursday night s win over the Oilers, David Krejci left the Bruins bench, down the tunnel to the dressing room, albeit briefly, before returning in time to tally the primary assist on Milan Lucic s empty-net goal at 19:52. When asked about his absence, Krejci first said, I stayed on. He later relented, admitting that he had exited for a short time. I mean, yeah, at the end of the game it was getting a little sore, so I was just being smart, Krejci said. The game was 4-2, so I know that we have a lot of guys that can do the job. So I was just playing smart and tried to keep the shifts short and I m glad we got it done. That was the good news. The concerning news, though, is that Krejci clearly isn t over the injury that had caused him to miss the last two games. Yeah, it s a concern, Krejci said. That s not the start to the season I would love to have, but it is what it is. This is my first time I m actually battling with injuries in my career, so I ve got to get through it. It s something new for me, but I ve been working hard and felt pretty good today, so I was good enough to play. Hopefully I ll have the next few days good days and feel even better on Monday. The Bruins have not disclosed the nature of the injury, but it has been reported to be to Krejci s hip. Asked if it was a hip issue related to the surgery he had in June 2009, Krejci said, This is something else. But whatever the injury is, it hasn t gone away. The center missed the first three games of the regular season with the injury, which was initially called very, very minor by coach Claude Julien when it happened in the preseason finale Oct. 4. He also missed the last two games including as a late scratch on Saturday before returning on Thursday. His return did not go well at the start. The first period was kind of tough to get my legs, my hands, you know, my mind back into the game, Krejci said. A couple of stupid penalties, but it happens, and then after it was better and better. Krejci was assessed six minutes in penalties in the first period, including a double minor for high-sticking at 14:34 that led to the Oilers first goal. He added a hooking penalty at 20:00. I wasn t impressed with him in the first period, Julien said. Six penalty minutes isn t what you want to see out of a guy like him. So it was just a matter of him just coming in and understanding he s missed the first three [games] of the season, he missed the last [two] games. So, I don t think he s in midseason form yet, so he s got to just keep his shifts short, try and bring the pace of his game up to what it is when he s good, and work on that part of it. But it s his first game back, so I don t think we were expecting him to carry the team tonight. He didn t. But the question is whether Krejci will be able to carry the Bruins going forward. How long will the injury bother him? How much will it affect him? As Krejci said, Time will tell. Krug doing well Torey Krug participated in the optional morning skate, a good sign for the defenseman. Krug broke a finger Oct. 28 and was given a timetable to return of 2-3 weeks. That could put him back with the team next week at the earliest. He s doing well, Julien said. Obviously his finger is much, much better, so it depends on how quickly that comes around. He s the only one that s probably going to be able to tell us right now. Medically, they ve given him permission to go out there and skate and hold onto his stick and everything else. I think, from what I m being told right now, it will be up to him how quickly he gets that feeling that he can hold his stick properly and it s not going to be an issue. Ference returns Andrew Ference returned to TD Garden with the Oilers, though he wasn t able to play because of a three-game suspension for a hit to the head of Vancouver s Zack Kassian. I ve got lots to do, lots of people to see. I had more time on my hands than I was expecting, but I filled it all up, Ference said. It s a special place. I ve got too many friends and not enough time to see everybody. You never want to get suspended, but to miss a game in this town is a little extra kick in the butt. It s unfortunate, but I still got to see everybody, so that s important.... The last time the Oilers beat the Bruins was on Nov. 7, Patrice Bergeron had seven shots on goal... David Warsofsky had an assist for his first point of the season... The game was the 500th of Lucic s career... Matt Bartkowski was a healthy scratch for the fourth straight game.
