Anaheim Ducks Ryan Getzlaf's overtime goal lifts Ducks past Tampa Bay, 1-0 By Lance Pugmire 11:29 PM PST, November 22, 2013 Ryan Getzlaf conquered a mountain of negativity and a giant of a man in one make it two swoops Friday. Ending the Ducks' five-game winless streak by scoring a winning goal with 5.2 seconds left in overtime, Getzlaf scored on Tampa Bay's 6-foot-7 goalie Ben Bishop to give the Ducks a 1-0 victory at Honda Center. "I just knew there wasn't that much time left," Getzlaf said about collecting the puck in the neutral zone as seconds dwindled and Bishop who had stopped the 41 previous shots stood before him. BOX SCORE: Ducks 1, Tampa Bay 0 (OT) "I looked at the clock, knew if I went on one last rush, they wouldn't have time to score. I just wanted to get one at the net. I ended up getting two cracks at it." After slamming a shot at 13-game-winner Bishop that was knocked down, Getzlaf poked his stick again at the airborne puck and it traveled just over the goal line. "It got over his shoulder and I kind of blacked out after that," Getzlaf cracked after fist-pumping in celebration of his 13th goal. "Good for our group." The first-place Ducks (16-6-3) were in self-described desperation, given the slump that included their most bitter defeat of the early season Wednesday, when defenseman Ben Lovejoy's pass deflected off teammate Corey Perry and went in the Ducks' goal to seal an overtime loss to New Jersey. Friday started ominously when the goalie who watched that one get past him, Jonas Hiller, was pressed into emergency service with all of two minutes' notice after planned starter Viktor Fasth suffered a lower body-injury in warmups and went to the medical room. Hiller responded with calm, Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said, and used some extra time afforded him thanks to a pregame tribute to Ducks recent Hall of Fame inductee Scott Niedermayer to stretch and prepare. Eight days earlier, Tampa Bay (14-8-1) scored five goals on Hiller in 20 shots. Friday, he proceeded to stop all 31 shots he faced, producing what Boudreau said was "easily" his best game of the year. "I didn't have too much time to think about anything," Hiller said. "Sometimes, it's almost easier that way. All your focus is about getting into the game, making the next stop. It was great to have some good stops early; that gave me the confidence and it was good to be in a good goaltending battle." Fasth will not be available for Saturday's game in Phoenix, Boudreau said. Through three periods, the teams were scoreless despite 68 combined shots (40 by the Ducks) and 17 penalties (10 by the Ducks). "We dug deep," Perry said as the Ducks improved to at home with their first 1-0 overtime win in five years. "I didn't think anyone would score on those goalies," Boudreau said. "Getzy plays hard. He is the leader. He logged a lot of minutes [25:04] tonight. It was only rightful." DUCKS AT PHOENIX When: 5 PST. On the Air: TV: Prime Radio: 830. Etc.: Phoenix is riding a club-record-tying 11-game home unbeaten streak (9-0-2). 5 Anaheim Ducks Getzlaf lifts Ducks with 5.2 seconds left in OT By ERIC STEPHENS / ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER Published: Nov. 22, 2013 Updated: 11:27 p.m. ANAHEIM In a matter of moments, Ryan Getzlaf made his last-ditch drive toward the net and sent the Ducks losing streak disappearing into the Friday night air. Getzlaf scored with 5.2 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Ducks to a 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning at Honda Center, ending his team's five-game losing swoon. The dramatic goal came in front of an announced 16,648 on a night the Ducks (16-8-3) honored recent Hall of Fame inductee Scott Niedermayer. Getzlaf got the puck in the neutral zone and rushed up ice with one final chance. Lightning goalie Ben Bishop got a glove on his initial shot but Getzlaf got a piece of the rebound and chipped the puck behind him. Tampa Bay's Richard Panik tried to keep the puck out before it crossed the goal line but he bounced it off the fallen Bishop. I just knew that there wasn t that much time left, said Getzlaf, who got his fifth career overtime goal. And so I just wanted to go on one last rush and try and get one at the net. End up getting two cracks at it. Got it over his shoulder and blacked out after that. Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller found out he was making an unexpected start just minutes before puck drop. Viktor Fasth suffered a lower-body injury during the pregame warmup. Hiller delivered a 31-save shutout to win a goaltending duel with Bishop. The Ducks threw 42 shots at the 6-foot-7 Bishop but could get only the final one by him. Hiller was razor sharp as well and had to be to get his 18th career shutout. You don t really have time to think about it, Hiller said. You re right there and all your focus is on getting into the game and making the next stop. It was great to have had some good stops early. That kind of gave me confidence. The Ducks were also without defenseman Francois Beauchemin, who suffered an upper-body injury Wednesday when he crashed head-first into the boards during the second period of an overtime loss to New Jersey. It was just the second game Beauchemin has missed since the end of the season. Orange County Register: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Jackman, Ducks happy to hook up together By ERIC STEPHENS / ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER ANAHEIM Tim Jackman is expected to bring a jolt of energy to the Ducks. And it was already flowing Friday morning, well ahead of his first game with his new team. A giant leap in the Pacific Division standings can do that to a player. It s really exciting, said Jackman, acquired by the Ducks from Calgary on Thursday. You look at the standings and see the team that I'm coming to, the history that they've had and how well they've been playing. It's fun to come be a part of a team like that. The Ducks parted with a sixth-round pick in the 2014 NHL draft to get Jackman and potentially shift the dynamic of their fourth line. Jackman, 32, lined up alongside Daniel Winnik and Matt Beleskey against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Instead of going with skill and more scoring ability with their fourth line, the Ducks clearly felt there was a need to add more experience, get bigger and add some nastiness. Jackman has 654 penalty minutes in 400 NHL games. The one thing about Tim is he's an established pro in this league a physical presence, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. Maybe more so than we've had here in the year and a half since George (Parros) left. And he can skate and play. I watched him play for the Islanders for a long time. He's a really useful player. We're happy to have him. Flames GM Jay Feaster, talking with Calgary-area reporters, called Jackman a warrior and a heart-and-soul kind of guy but acknowledged that the right wing wasn't in the club's rebuilding plans. Jackman can be an unrestricted free agent next summer. Jackman played in just 10 of Calgary's 21 games and the signs of a future in another sweater were apparent. The writing was on the wall a little bit because I was in and out of the lineup, Jackman said. They got a lot of young guys and they want to bring them up. It was just timing. Beleskey said he thinks having another bigger body in the 6-foot-2, 225-pound Jackman gives them a different dynamic that will help the Ducks. According to the website hockeyfights.com, Jackman has had 79 fights during the NHL regular season. I think it ll just bring another physical aspect, Beleskey said. He's a big guy. Big physical presence. Brings toughness and an intimidation factor. I think it's good for our team. And it s going to help us work down low and try and wear some teams down. Adding a veteran to the NHL roster might also have a side effect in keeping on edge some of the younger forwards the Ducks have moved into the lineup and watched go through some growing pains. I m sure it does, Boudreau said. Anytime you add a player or delete a player, there s messages being sent. It s up to the players to get the right message. VATANEN RETURNS Defenseman Sami Vatanen was recalled from Norfolk (AHL) and Francois Beauchemin was put on injured reserve because of an upper-body injury suffered Wednesday when he crashed head-first into the boards. Beauchemin is eligible to be activated Wednesday but it will mean he s guaranteed to miss Saturday s contest at Phoenix and Tuesday s game at Dallas. Vatanen had a goal and four assists in 17 games during his first Ducks stint. With Beauchemin out, Mark Fistric made his fifth appearance and second in four games. Orange County Register: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Ducks fighting to find a fix for their struggles By JEFF MILLER Published: Nov. 21, 2013 Updated: Nov. 22, :03 p.m. ANAHEIM He has appeared in 213 regular-season NHL games and Wednesday scored a goal for the Ducks. But Matt Beleskey also has missed 20 games this season because of a broken thumb, a six-week gap that left him no option but to do what the rest of us do: watch the games from afar and, occasionally, fight the urge to turn over to that rerun of American Dad. When it s going well, it s exciting to watch, Beleskey said Thursday. When it s going bad, it s hard to watch. Once the hottest team in the league, the Ducks are now separated from their latest victory by five games and 12 days. Yes, much like ESPN s daily lineup of debate, the Ducks have been hard to watch lately. The final minute of regulation and then overtime Wednesday were particularly difficult, as pointless as listening to two men argue about when Kobe Bryant will return when even he doesn t know. The Ducks surrendered the tying goal with 61 seconds remaining and then lost to New Jersey in OT by scoring into their own net. Ben Lovejoy tried to clear the puck but instead deflected it off Corey Perry s leg, beating Jonas Hiller, who, understandably, was preoccupied with the antics of the guys wearing the other uniforms. I don t even call it a mistake, Coach Bruce Boudreau said later. It was an accident. An accident. A two-player pileup. Perry immediately wore the posture of the defeated, weakly dropping his stick and turning away from Lovejoy. It didn t take much imagination to picture Perry also rolling his eyes, a display of exaggeration and exasperation as exclamation. Thankfully, Perry didn t go Matt Barnes on the Ducks afterward and belittle his teammates with name-calling. Perry isn t even on Twitter, and we knew there was something about the guy we really liked. The Ducks will attempt to end their slide Friday against Tampa Bay, and here s where we d normally write something glowing about the beloved Joe Maddon. Turns out, Maddon doesn t have anything to do with Tampa s hockey team. The Lightning instead are coached by a man named Jon Cooper, who probably is a decent guy, too, although we should note he once was a practicing attorney. After playing so well to start the season, the Ducks have been missing something lately. Perhaps in a related move, they made a trade Thursday, adding winger Tim Jackman from Calgary. This was not a deal to bolster the offense. Jackman, in his past 151 games, has scored only three more goals than you have over that time. But he will bring the team grit, something also provided by Beleskey, who broke his thumb in a fight. A fight during the preseason. Beleskey then played in the first two regular-season games despite his hand looking like a puffy eggplant and being of so little use to him that he couldn t employ it to brush his teeth or wash his hair. They originally took X-rays of the injury in Colorado, but the medical personal of the Avalanche could find nothing broken. Back home, the Ducks doctors finally discovered the fracture, and here s hoping if you ever suffer a heart attack it doesn t happen when you re in Denver. Minus Beleskey, the rest of the Ducks so far have engaged in only nine fights, according to hockeyfights.com. Just eight NHL teams have fought fewer times, the least pugilistic bunch being New Jersey and, as reported, the Ducks just lost to the kinder, gentler Devils. So dropping the gloves doesn t necessarily correlate into climbing the standings, but, when a team needs an emotional lift, sometimes a public fit of testosterone can help. You re paid to play your game and do what you re supposed to do, Beleskey said. I think every one of us accepts that. That s what you re paid for. Fighting at the moment, however, might not be a viable option for Beleskey. His thumb isn t fully healed and he has been playing with his hand taped up, something the NHL doesn t allow for players who fight. But asked directly if he wouldn t square off, Beleskey only smiled and indicated he d have to wait to see how he feels at the time. His is a dangerous job, obviously, head blows a point of emphasis in all sports. Beleskey said he has had one concussion in his career. It happened four years ago, the result of an awkward check into the boards by Dallas Stephane Robidas. It s scary, Beleskey said. That s a long-term thing that can happen to you. But we get paid good money to do what we do. It s a profession that I love. That s a sacrifice I m willing to make. And he s back on the ice today, making sacrifices for a group trying to fix itself, trying to in the worst cases get out of its own way. But the Ducks trials could continue Friday, especially since the other team this time even has hired a lawyer. Orange County Register: LOADED:

Boston Bruins Adam McQuaid questionable against Hurricanes and the time they spent in the offensive zone. I think those are the encouraging signs for me to see our four lines performing almost at the same level. When your fourth line can perform like a top line, it s a great sign. Boston Globe LOADED: By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell November 23, 2013 WILMINGTON Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid looked comfortable skating during practice with his teammates on Friday at Ristuccia Arena. It was the first time McQuaid participated in a full, on-ice workout since suffering a lower-body injury against Toronto Nov. 9. Whether he is available to return on Saturday afternoon against Carolina at TD Garden remains to be seen. I m getting there, said McQuaid, who has skated five days in a row. Today was better than yesterday. I kind of got into some more game-like situations, some down low play and stuff like that. I m happy with how each day is progressing and we ll see what tomorrow brings. McQuaid said he plans to talk with the training staff and coaches and see where they go from here. I think it s going to be something that I m probably going to have to play through a little bit, said McQuaid. You want to make sure that it gets to a certain point that you re not going to reinjure yourself and ultimately you re capable of doing everything you need to do on the ice. It s all new to me. Every day I m not sure what the next day is going to bring, but I m doing what I m told and trying to work through things. If McQuaid isn t able to suit up, the Bruins were impressed by Kevan Miller, who made his NHL debut against the St. Louis Blues Thursday and looked as if he belonged. I thought he played great, solid, and he moved the puck well, said McQuaid. I was saying to some of the other guys, I don t think he made a bad play. He seemed to always find the right guy and the right option. It s obviously exciting to see guys get their first game and we re excited for him and his family was here. I am sure it was an exciting day for everyone. If he plays that well in his first game, he s got a bright future ahead of him. Coach Claude Julien praised Miller s play after the game. On Friday, Julien reiterated how solid Miller looked. He made good plays, he defended well, said Julien. He didn t really get beat in any areas of the game. Sometimes you need those kind of guys who will come in and not play it safe because I thought he did a great job of supporting the attack and made some real good moves at the blue line, carrying the puck across and stuff like that. He just played with a lot of confidence. We ll see how Adam is tomorrow morning and we ll make a decision then. If he s not quite ready to go, we know what we ve got and I have no issues putting [Miller] in the lineup tomorrow as well. Dennis Seidenberg to sit out Defenseman Dennis Seidenberg will not play against Carolina. He has yet to skate since suffering a lower-body injury Tuesday night against the Rangers. He s day to day, said Julien. He hasn t skated yet so he s not going to be in the lineup [Saturday].... Tuukka Rask likely will get the day off with backup Chad Johnson stepping in against the Hurricanes. Rask made no secret of his unhappiness after losing Thursday s game in a shootout. Rask smashed his stick and told the media after the game he wishes the NHL would gas the shootout right now. He was frustrated, said Julien. We ve seen worse, we ve seen a crate go flying before. That s just Tuukka, he s got that temper. Sometimes, you wish he d kind of hide it a little bit and hold on for at least a minute and do it behind closed doors, but that s just the way he is. That s his personality. He had a new stick in his hands today and he finally destroyed the other one after numerous tries. I m just laughing it off. It s just a frustrated goaltender who really takes a lot of pride in winning games and no matter what he does, if he feels he didn t pull his load, he s going to be like that toward [himself], but that s his thinking, not ours.... Julien had a lot of praise for the recent play of fourth-liners Daniel Paille, Gregory Campbell, and Shawn Thornton. I think they re playing well, said the coach. [Thursday night], to be honest with you, I thought they were as good as our top lines, how they moved the puck and the chances they had

Boston Bruins Blues beat Bruins 3-2 on Roy's shootout goal By JIMMY GOLEN / AP Sports Writer / November 21, 2013 Derek Roy blew a chance to end the game in the first minute of overtime. Then St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock gave him a chance to make up for it. Roy scored once in regulation and added the clincher in the fourth round of the shootout on Thursday night to lead the Blues to a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins. Roy, who hit the crossbar on a breakaway in sudden death, didn t make the same mistake when he got another chance to win it. I usually look at body language on the bench, and Roysie was perked up he wanted to go, Hitchcock said. So we had him go. Jaroslav Halak stopped 27 shots in regulation, two more in overtime, and three in the shootout as St. Louis won for the fourth time in five games and continued the hottest start in its history. David Backes also scored for the Blues, and NHL points-leader Alexander Steen converted their other shootout goal after going the entire game without a shot. Gregory Campbell and Carl Soderberg scored for Boston. Tuukka Rask made 24 saves and forced Roy to put one off the crossbar on a breakaway in the first minute of overtime. I knew I could get him on that shot, and I thought I picked it perfect, and I hit crossbar, Roy said. I wanted to redeem myself in the shootout, and Coach put me out there.... It shows that he s got confidence in me going out in the shootout. I just wanted to help my team win the game, and I'm happy to do that and be put in that position to do that. Soderberg broke in alone in the last 15 seconds of overtime, but he meekly shot the puck into Halak s pads just before the final buzzer. That sent the game to a shootout, and Boston took an early lead when Patrice Bergeron beat Halak over his shoulder to make it 1-0. T.J. Oshie, David Krejci and Jarome Iginla all missed before Steen poked it through Rask s pads to tie it 1-1 after three tries apiece. Chris Kelly missed for Boston in the first extra round, and Roy went in quickly, skidded to a stop and then went around Rask to poke the puck in for the winner. He told guys on the bench that he was going to do the move, and did it and got away with it, Hitchcock said. After Roy s shot went in, Rask slammed his stick against the goal post and continued hammering it into the ice as he skated off to the locker room. It was the Blues 15th win in 21 games this season, giving them 33 points the most in the NHL. The Bruins had won six of their previous seven games and taken over the best record in the Eastern Conference. There s a lot of similarities between the teams, Backes said. I don t know if we quite have a 6-foot-9 defenseman, but there s tough to play against forwards, and teams that are disciplined and stick to the game plan. You saw a couple of breakdowns tonight, and they all ended up in the back of the net. Each team had just one penalty in the game, and Bruins coach Claude Julien said he thought his team played well enough to win. I thought it was a real fun game to watch, he said. Everything, from my end, except for that extra point that I thought we should have had. The Bruins scored late in the first when Blues defenseman Ian Cole fell in his own end, allowing Boston to keep the puck in the zone. Torey Krug slid it over to Campbell, who tried to one-time it, but sculled it off the heel of his stick. The slow-moving puck seemed to confuse Halak and went into the net off the corner of the post. But the Blues tied it just 37 seconds later, when Roy wristed the puck toward the net from the left point. Stewart tried to deflect it near the circle, missing the puck but knocking a defender s stick away. Another Blues player tried to get a stick on it in the crease but it also eluded him as he was taken down by Boston defenseman Matt Bartkowski. Instead, the undeflected puck went right through Rask s legs to make it 1-all with 9 seconds left in the period. St. Louis took a 2-1 lead late in the second when Kevin Shattenkirk s wrist shot from the point was deflected into the net by Backes. It was Shattenkirk s 100th career assist. This time it was the Bruins turn to answer quickly. About 2½ minutes after the Blues took the lead, Reilly Smith fed the puck from behind the net to Soderberg in the slot, and he beat Halak to tie it 2-2. NOTES: Hall of Famer Bobby Orr took part in a ceremonial puck drop. John Pie McKenzie, another member of the Bruins 1970 and 72 Stanley Cup championship teams, was also in attendance. The 1970 team swept St. Louis in the finals.... The Bruins called up D Kevan Miller to fill in while Adam McQuaid and Dennis Seidenberg are out with undisclosed injuries. Miller made his NHL debut.... St. Louis finished a three-game road stretch. The Blues split the first two, losing to Washington and beating Buffalo by 4-1 scores.... The first penalty of the game was called with 1:54 gone in the third period.... Steen entered the night tied for the NHL lead with Pittsburgh s Sidney Crosby at 26. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Dennis Seidenberg still out with lower-body injury By Fluto Shinzawa November 22, 2013 On Thursday, Dennis Seidenberg sat out the first of what could be three straight games because of a lower-body injury. Seidenberg was injured on his first shift of the Bruins 2-1 win over the Rangers Tuesday. Seidenberg appeared to hurt his left leg during a net-front collision with New York s Derek Dorsett. Coach Claude Julien said Seidenberg s return would most likely be within seven days from the date of the injury. The Bruins play Carolina at TD Garden Saturday, then host Pittsburgh Monday. If the one-week timeframe holds, Seidenberg could play Wednesday against Detroit. Seidenberg went through an off-ice workout Thursday. Seidenberg, the team s No. 2 defenseman, has zero goals and six assists in 21 games, averaging 21:07 of ice time. He was most recently the left-side defenseman on the second pairing with Torey Krug. Soup s on Gregory Campbell had been pressing. Through 21 games, the fourth-line center was the only Bruin forward without a goal. That finally changed in his 22d game. At 18:20 of the first period of Thursday s 3-2 shootout loss to the Blues, Campbell heeled a one-timer past Jaroslav Halak s left pad to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. It is nice to get on the board, Campbell said. It s been a long time coming. It was a relief. It came at a good time for our team. Scoring goals and contributing offensively is one thing, but it s also another thing when it s needed. I think that s what is expected of our team to have different lines and different guys contributing. The scoring sequence started after Ian Cole lost an edge and coughed up the puck while trying to wheel out of the St. Louis zone. Later in the shift, Daniel Paille passed to Krug at the left point. At the same time, Campbell opened up at the right circle. Krug connected with a seam pass that Campbell turned into a goal. I really felt [Campbell] and his line have really been turning the corner here a little bit, said Julien. Tonight in my mind, they played like a top line. They were out there doing a great job. They were bringing as much as the other lines were as far as spending time in the offensive zone and everything else. Campbell had three shots, three hits, and two blocked shots in 12:22 of ice time. He also won 9 of 11 faceoffs. McQuaid progressing Adam McQuaid, out since Nov. 9, participated in his first morning skate Thursday since the injury. McQuaid sat out his sixth straight game. Thursday was McQuaid s fourth day of skating. He was hurt when he pivoted and chased a puck Nov. 9 against Toronto. It s been a pretty good progression, McQuaid said. Every day, it s been getting a little bit better. That s what you hope for, that there s no setbacks. It s possible McQuaid could return Saturday against Carolina. McQuaid would have to get through practice Friday and take contact in battle drills. McQuaid s game depends on being physical. He has yet to engage in serious contact. There s some things I haven t really done yet, some more game-situation stuff, which would be nice to get into more of a full practice, McQuaid said. I ve just been slowly building every day, doing a little bit more. We ll see how it reacts. Rask back in Tuukka Rask made his third straight start. Chad Johnson could play in Saturday s matinee against the Hurricanes. Rask would then return to the net on Monday against the Penguins... Zdeno Chara played a game-high 29:57, matched mostly against the Blues top line of Alex Steen, David Backes, and T.J. Oshie. Chara played 31:27 on Tuesday against the Rangers... General manager Peter Chiarelli spent time Thursday meeting with St. Louis counterpart Doug Armstrong. Both are members of Team Canada s Olympic management group. Julien and St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock are Olympic assistant coaches... Carl Soderberg played his first game against his former organization. The Blues drafted Soderberg in the second round in The Bruins acquired Soderberg from St. Louis for Hannu Toivonen. In the second period, Soderberg scored his third goal by snapping the puck high glove. Soderberg had a team-high four shots, and had five other attempts blocked. Soderberg won 6 of 8 faceoffs by taking some draws for Chris Kelly. Kelly is partially limited on faceoffs because of a minor undisclosed ailment, according to Julien. I thought his game tonight was extremely good, Julien said of Soderberg. He played really a heavy game. Besides his goal, he had some good chances. I thought that was one of his best efforts. I see him getting better and better all the time. It s nice to see that potential that everybody saw in him when we brought him over.... Bobby Orr dropped the ceremonial first puck... Jordan Caron was the healthy scratch for the 10th time in the last 11 games. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Bruins left feeling blue in shootout By Fluto Shinzawa November 22, 2013 Tuukka Rask did not receive enough satisfaction by whacking his stick on the post. As Rask skated toward the bench, seconds after allowing the deciding goal in a 3-2 shootout loss to St. Louis Thursday at TD Garden, the goalie smashed his stick onto the ice several more times before disappearing down the tunnel. Rask wasn t just steamed about the shootout strikes by Derek Roy and Alex Steen. Rask was still angry about the long-distance dribbler in the first period a roller that wasn t going fast enough to be pulled over in a school zone that somehow trickled between his pads to tie the game at 1-1. I gave up that worst goal of my career probably there, Rask said. That got them back in the game. We battled back, 2-2. We played a [heck] of a third, too. Just couldn t score that winning goal. Then in the shootout, I couldn t stop the pucks. Two nights earlier, Rask had turned back a season-high 43 shots to steal the Bruins a two-point decision over the Rangers. Rask punched out a handful of pucks that should have been New York goals. So, it was a shock to Rask and his teammates to see such a stoppable shot end up in the Boston net. Roy had flipped a long-distance shot on goal that ticked off Chris Kelly s stick. The puck then rolled through Johnny Boychuk s legs. The puck approached Rask with the velocity of a mini-golf putt. Every goalie knows to put the paddle down and close up the pads. Rask did neither, and paid for it. It was coming so slow, Rask said. I saw it all the time. I figured I d go paddle down so the guy beside me didn t get a whack at it. Obviously, I didn t go paddle down. I guess I blame my small pads. Rask s uncharacteristic error might have been the only aberration in a hard-nosed, well-played 65 minutes of ice-bag hockey. Both teams drove pucks deep. They finished their checks. They created scoring chances. They hit everything that moved. It was a playoff game. Exactly, said St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock. It was very disciplined. I think both teams really respected each other, but it was really a hard game. It was physical in a way. Not running over each other, but it was physical in a way where there was a lot of weight and heavy play out there. I think for a lot of guys, this was very demanding. It was the type of game that would have satisfied both teams had the result been a 2-2 tie. Instead, Patrice Bergeron was the only Bruin to score on Jaroslav Halak in the shootout. David Krejci, Jarome Iginla, and Kelly came up short, which left the Bruins with one very unsatisfying point. I just find that when a game is played so well like that, it s a lot easier if both teams could have walked out of here saying it was a hard-fought game, Bruins coach Claude Julien said. Both teams would have been happy. Right now, you come out of there more or less feeling like you ve lost the game. In my mind, we played well enough to win. Those are tough whatever, if you want to call it a loss to take, because I thought we deserved a lot better. The primary improvements took place on defense. Because of injuries to Dennis Seidenberg and Adam McQuaid, the Bruins rolled out four defensemen who were either in Providence or juniors last year at this time. Kevan Miller was playing in his first NHL game. The baby-faced Bruins were also coming off a different kind of shootout the O.K. Corral kind. But instead of submitting a repeat leaky effort of the game in New York, the Bruins tightened everything up around Rask. The only other goal the Blues scored was at 16:04 of the second period. After David Backes won an offensive-zone faceoff against Milan Lucic and pulled the puck back to Kevin Shattenkirk, the St. Louis captain went to the front of the net. Backes was in position to tip Shattenkirk s shot past Rask to give the Blues a 2-1 lead. We didn t give too many odd-man rushes, Rask said. We boxed out guys pretty well today and didn t give them second opportunities. Overall, chipping pucks out and chipping pucks in was really good. The Bruins got goals from their bottom-six forwards. Gregory Campbell scored his first goal of the season at 18:20 of the first to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. At 18:41 of the second, Carl Soderberg snapped a bead over Halak s glove, tying the game at 2-2. It s been a while since we ve played a good, solid 60 minutes like that, Julien said. With the circumstances, we had some young guys back there who played extremely well tonight. You could see St. Louis trying to come at us hard, hopefully to force our young guys to make mistakes. But they were solid. They made some real good plays. I was really proud of our back end tonight. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins A comfortable debut for rookie Kevan Miller By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell November 22, 2013 When asked what UVM did for his career, Miller smiled. It s done loads of stuff, he said. I really kind of built my character as a player and as a person there. I think my character and my role as a hockey player really developed there. Boston Globe LOADED: It was a bit like a belated birthday party. When defenseman Kevan Miller turned 26 on Nov. 15, he didn t realize one of his most precious gifts was just around the corner. The Bruins recalled Miller on an emergency basis for Thursday night s game at TD Garden, and he made his NHL debut against the St. Louis Blues. Though the Bruins lost, 3-2, in a shootout, Miller turned in a solid performance. His mother, father, brother, uncle, and girlfriend flew in from his native Los Angeles to be there. Miller said there was a lot of scrambling to make travel arrangements. It was pretty quick, said Miller. My parents didn t get to catch the red-eye, they caught [a flight] this morning, so it was good. Miller said that for the most part, he felt he fit in during the game, despite a slight delay at the start because of an ice issue. Right away, there was a pause at the beginning there and it took me a little bit to get going, said Miller. But I felt pretty comfortable for all three periods. Miller logged 17 minutes, 42 seconds of ice time over 23 shifts. He was credited two hits, a takeaway, and two blocked shots. He finished plus-1 and got a chance to participate in killing the Blues lone power play. That s something I pride myself in, I like to be good on the PK, said Miller. It was nice to get that opportunity. Miller started the game with Torey Krug, but before too long was paired with Matt Bartkowski, with whom he played in Providence. We ve played together for a long time, said Miller. I ve played with Krug as well and we find a little bit of comfort there, and it seemed to work out pretty well. Miller has played in Providence for the last three-plus seasons after graduating from the University of Vermont. He signed as a free agent Oct. 21, 2011, and got a long look in the Bruins most recent training camp, ending up the final player cut. He said that experience was invaluable. The four preseason games really kind of kicked it in for me and being around the guys, said Miller. Obviously, I was a little nervous, but it s been three years now and I got to get some preseason games in and kind of be around the team, and that definitely makes things more comfortable. When asked about the NHL versus the AHL, Miller said it was a different level. I don t know if it s really speed or physicality, said Miller. There are guys in the right spot all the time. It makes my job a little bit easier trying to make their job a little bit easier. It s a combination of both of those [because of the predictability of where everyone is going to be]. One person who was very pleased for Miller was Vermont coach Kevin Sneddon. We are very proud of Kevan and his NHL debut tonight, said Sneddon via . He s always been one of the hardest-working players, so it s nice to see that work pay off. Kevan is a fierce competitor and understands how to play to his strengths. Above all, he brings a great attitude and positive energy to the rink every day. Sneddon said he saw NHL potential in Miller early in his college career. Kevan always displayed an NHL work ethic, toughness, and leadership, said Sneddon. He just needed to realize his strengths as a player, which he did by his sophomore year. He s a physical specimen and always carried himself like a pro from Day 1 at UVM.

Boston Bruins Notebook: Carl Soderberg finds his way Steve Conroy, Bruins Notebook WILMINGTON Since Carl Soderberg returned to the Bruins lineup after missing the first six games of the season, he has shown both an aptitude and willingness to do the dirty work. Going to the net has never been a problem, and has always been a part of his reputation. But recently, Soderberg has shown off another part of that rep from the Swedish Elite League his ability to snipe. Soderberg is finding some open areas on the ice to release his hard snapshot and, in the B s 3-2 shootout loss to the Blues on Thursday, he demonstrated that he doesn t need to be at the top of the crease to score in the NHL. Soderberg took a feed from Reilly Smith at the inside of the right circle and beat Jaroslav Halak over the glove. In the last four games, he put 16 shots on net, while more increasingly displaying his mid-range wrister. He s getting comfortable playing his game here (in the smaller North American rinks), but at the same time he s getting comfortable playing within our team game, said B s coach Claude Julien. He s finding some comfort there and finding those areas, so I think it s a blend of both. I can t say enough about him right now. I really like the direction his game is going in. He s a heavy player around that net area and he ll go through anybody to get to that puck. And those kind of players, teams don t have enough of. Soderberg feels the biggest reason for his upturn is he s past the ankle/foot injury that kept him out at the start of the season. My foot was feeling bad. It wasn t perfect and it made it hard to shoot, but now I feel good, said Soderberg, who also downplayed the transition from the bigger rinks in Europe. It s pretty much the same. It s hard in Sweden, too, (to get quality shots). Of course, (your opponents) are better here, but so are your teammates and you can create scoring chances here as well. In any given game The Bruins this season have usually reserved their best efforts for the best teams in the league, like the Blues. Today s matinee presents a different challenge. The Carolina Hurricanes have lost three in a row, including a 4-1 defeat to the B s on Monday. They are trying to stay out of the cellar of the weak Metropolitan Division. I think it s huge, said center Chris Kelly. It s easy to get up for the tougher games, but we have to realize that Carolina s a good hockey team and the past two years we ve had a lot of difficulty with them. There s no easy games, there s no free points in this league. Everyone s so competitive and anyone can win on any given night. You need to be ready to play. You don t want to take any steps backward. You want to take baby steps forward every day and get better and better and try to perfect our game. When playing a team like the Blues, a little bit of a fear factor kicks in. We knew if we didn t (give a 60-minute effort), we were going to be in trouble, said Kelly. Up next, Kelly Julien admitted he went with a hunch when he selected Kelly to go in the fourth round of the shootout on Thursday. Kelly wound up losing the puck before getting a shot off. Chris scored a nice goal in the shootout in preseason and then there was the penalty shot in the first game. He s actually pretty good, said Julien. To be honest with you, I was looking at my bench and went with a gut feeling that he would put the puck where Halak s weakness was, but he never got that chance. Kelly s take on getting selected to shoot? Were you guys as surprised as I was? he said with a laugh. McQuaid improves Defenseman Adam McQuaid participated in his first full practice yesterday at Ristuccia Arena since suffering a core injury on Nov. 9. He s getting closer to a return, though tomorrow s game against the Hurricanes is still very much in question. I m getting there. Again, (yesterday) was better than (Thursday) and I got into some game-like situations, some down-low play. I m happy with each day s progressing and we ll see what tomorrow brings, he said. I ll have to talk with the trainers and stuff and see what stuff is OK to play through and what s not. McQuaid expects he ll get back in a game before he s 100 percent. It s probably something I m going to have to play through a little bit, said McQuaid, but you want to make sure it s something you re not going to reinjure yourself when you re doing what you need to do when you re on the ice." With the way Kevan Miller played in his NHL debut, there s no reason to rush McQuaid back. Dennis Seidenberg, meanwhile, remained off the ice after suffering a lower body injury in New York on Tuesday. Tuukka goes off Tuukka Rask pulled one of his famous Tuukka tantrums when he lost the shootout game, but Julien had no problem with it, even though he thought it was unnecessary. Goalies are goalies, right? If it wasn t for him, we probably would have had just one point in our last two games instead of three. That s the way we look at it and it s certainly not his fault. We had chances to score more goals and it was a team thing, said Julien. We ve seen worse, we ve seen a crate going flying before. That s just Tuukka. He s got that temper where sometimes you wish he d hide it for minute until he gets behind closed doors, but that s just the way he is and that s his personality. He had a new stick in his hands today. I think he finally destroyed the other one after numerous tries. Just a frustrated goaltender who takes pride in winning games. And no matter what he does, if he feels he didn t pull his load, he s going to be like that toward (himself). But that s his thinking, not ours. Boston Herald LOADED:
