Anaheim Ducks Dustin Penner a winning ingredient for the Ducks By Lance Pugmire November 10, 2013 On the air: TV: Prime Ticket; Radio: 830. Record vs. Canucks (2013): 2-1. Etc.: New Canucks Coach John Tortorella inherited talent that is shining. Goalie Roberto Luongo has two shutouts, and Henrik Sedin had 20 points (17 assists) before Saturday's game versus the Kings. LA Times: LOADED: Dustin Penner joked that he's been able to recapture the success he had six years ago, when the Ducks won the Stanley Cup, partly because of the new lightweight equipment he's found. "Funny guy," Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said. "Less of a belly is the lightweight equipment." The Ducks hoped for this when they signed the 31-year-old free agent after his disappointing two-plus seasons with the Kings. Since Penner has been paired with his linemates Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, the good times have returned. "That's exactly how it feels," Getzlaf said. "The way we used to play together and work off each other. 'Penns' has done more than enough work to skate the way he is with that energy." The Ducks (14-3-1), who play Sunday at home against Vancouver, are off to the best start in the NHL this season. And Penner leads the league with a goal differential of plus-18 when he's on the ice. Despite missing seven games the first a healthy scratch in the season opener for conditioning concerns, and the next six after a concussion Penner has three goals and nine assists and the Ducks are when he plays. He had a goal and three assists in Friday's 6-2 rout of Buffalo as the Ducks improved to 7-0 at home. Yes, Kings fans, this is the same guy who was a combined minus-9 in his last two seasons and once missed a game after wrenching his back as he sat down to eat a stack of pancakes. After "some strong suggestions from management he's in good shape," Boudreau said. "That's the biggest thing from the beginning of the season to now. He's healthy, in shape and he's confident. All of those things add up. And the line itself is moving the puck around quite well." It helps the plus/minus to be paired with Getzlaf, who is ranked second behind Sidney Crosby in the league with 22 points, and Perry, off to a 10-goal start too. But Penner, who scored 29 goals in before leaving for a rich deal in Edmonton that included two minus-12 seasons, has also made defensive strides. Sometimes plus/minus "is a misnomer, but I don't think it is with him," Boudreau said. "I've watched his responsibility defensively, and he's done a really good job." Penner said his staggering plus-18 the largest number through 11 games since Pittsburgh's Sergei Zubov did it in is "more from the way the team's playing." "I'm getting there, playing better personally. Anybody who plays with them is set up for success. I'm trying to add elements to my game that maybe weren't there before." He mentioned factors behind the first line's success. "We share the puck well, hold onto it for longer than a couple seconds. We make teams expel that energy trying to get it off of us. "We try to create momentum every shift. That adds to the other three lines. You see there's a general confidence among the team that's building even when we don't score. And it snowballs from there." SUNDAY VS. VANCOUVER CANUCKS When: 5 p.m. Where: Honda Center.

Anaheim Ducks Don't be so modest, Hall of Famer Scott Niedermayer Helene Elliott 5:00 AM PST, November 9, 2013 Scott Niedermayer glided into the Hockey Hall of Fame as smoothly and surely as he skated around NHL rinks through 1,263 games over parts of 18 seasons. Niedermayer's skates seemed to be extensions of his feet, so gracefully did he move when he brought the puck up ice or patrolled his position on defense. He won just about everything there is to win at every level of hockey including four Stanley Cup championships, the last in 2007 alongside his brother, Rob and his election to the Hall of Fame was a certainty in his first year of eligibility. Certain to all but Niedermayer, apparently. "They gave us our rings," he said Friday of the event that kicked off the induction festivities in Toronto, "and I still felt like a visitor in there." No, Scott. Make yourself at home. You belong there, though he insisted he couldn't have made the journey alone. "I have the time now to reflect on how fortunate I was throughout my career," said Niedermayer, an assistant coach with the Ducks. "I've come to realize how many people were involved that helped out along the way and were a big part of it. Just lucky I had those people in my life, I guess." The induction ceremony will take place Monday and will feature a diverse group, a tribute to the breadth and depth of the game. Also elected on the first try was defenseman Chris Chelios, one of the greatest hockey players the U.S. has produced and a three-time Cup winner who was a fearsome force into his late 40s. Brendan Shanahan, who occasionally flouted the rules during his standout career as a power forward and now dispenses justice as the head of the NHL's department of player safety, made it in his second year of eligibility. Women's game pioneer Geraldine Heaney, a two-time Olympic medalist who has been compared to Bobby Orr for her offensive exploits, will join Cammi Granato and Angela James as the only female players in the Hall. Fred Shero, the visionary coach who was well ahead of his time and won two Cup titles with the Philadelphia Flyers, will be inducted posthumously. His son, Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Ray Shero, will represent him. And although media honorees aren't considered in the same category as players, coaches and builders, shout-outs must go to witty Jay Greenberg, winner of the Elmer Ferguson Award for distinguished hockey writing, and insightful Buffalo Sabres commentator Harry Neale, winner of the Foster Hewitt Award for his work in broadcast journalism. Of all the inductees and players already enshrined, Niedermayer stands out for his fluid, seemingly effortless skating. "We worked on it. I did power skating and a little bit of figure skating at a young age," he said. "But at the same time I had some talent and that was a strength of mine. Instruction and technique helped. "There were times early in my career it got me into trouble but I learned to use it to my advantage at both ends of the rink and eventually it kind of paid off." Kind of? Niedermayer isn't being falsely modest. He truly doesn't see himself as a Hall of Fame player, like the ones he saw on TV or read about. "I grew up watching so many of the guys that are now in the Hall of Fame. They were the guys that were amazing to watch, great players, guys I idolized," he said. "I don't know when I'm going to feel like I belong there. Those are the guys that were my heroes, guys that maybe I didn't see play but guys you always refer to, like Bobby Orr and Gordie Howe. So it's hard to fathom." He won his third Cup title in 2003 with the New Jersey Devils, prevailing in a seven-game series at the expense of the Ducks and his brother. Seeing the devastation on Rob's face planted a thought in Scott's mind, and he acted on it by signing with the Ducks as a free agent in the summer of "We played together as kids and I went away to play junior and he went to a different team the following year. We were probably happier to play on different teams then," Scott said, laughing. "There's been a lot of water under the bridge. Obviously we've both matured and when that opportunity came, especially after the tough situation of facing each other in the Finals, that was a big reason I wanted to be in Anaheim." The Ducks reached the West final in 2006 and won the Cup in One of the most lasting memories was created when Scott, as captain of the winning team, received the Cup and immediately passed it to Rob. "I don't know how much I thought of it beforehand, but it felt great. It was very emotional," Scott said. "For anybody, winning the Stanley Cup is an amazing accomplishment and pretty satisfying to be able to do. And our whole back story, the connection there, where I stood between him and the Cup, I remember how disappointed he was after Game 7 [in 2003]. Four years later, to right a wrong, I guess, it felt really good. I knew how much he contributed to the team. He really deserved it, like all the guys on the team did. It was great." As for those who visit the Hall 10 or 20 years from now and look at his plaque, as he has looked at plaques of those before him, Niedermayer hopes they will judge him in the same way he measured his own value. "Good teammate. Played hard for the team. Just tried to help them win. I guess that would be just perfect," he said. That's all? A good team guy? The beauty of hockey is that it's enough. "I think very highly of a lot of guys I played with, so I respect that a lot," he said. "Just a guy that went out there and did everything he could to help his teammates and let his team have success. I think that's it. I'd be very happy." Consider it done. LA Times: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks Ducks see room for improvement, despite record He s just going through a lot of different little tests right now, Boudreau said. He felt great today. He said he s going to turn it up a little bit and we ll see how it goes tomorrow. Orange County Register: LOADED: BY ERIC STEPHENS / ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER ANAHEIM The most points. The most goals. The most depth. Can these NHL-leading Ducks, who possess all three nearing the season s one-quarter pole, actually get better? Ask and you ll get a resounding yes even after a 6-2 rout of lowly Buffalo that was decided in the first 20 minutes Friday night. We can be a lot better, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said Saturday. We showed 14 clips this morning of us not doing the right things in our own zone. And that was just the first half of the game. Perhaps that is just another way to keep the Ducks motivated, especially with the Vancouver Canucks coming in Sunday for a key Pacific Division matchup. The Canucks faced the Kings up the road at Staples Center on Saturday night. The Ducks are since losing back-to-back contests in Toronto and Montreal. They ve outscored their opponents, 30-17, during that run and their bottom-dwelling power play has four goals over the past two games. We re on fire, Boudreau said, snickering. I think 26th right now or 27th. We re moving up the ladder. Cam Fowler has two of those four power-play goals for his first scores of the season after getting just one goal throughout the lockout-shortened campaign. Fowler s offense has picked up of late with six points in his past five games. It certainly gives me some confidence going forward, he said. I think the main thing for me is I was able to stay confident in my game because I knew I was doing the right things. It s not always offense that helps me contribute to the team. It s trying to be the best overall player I can be. There are a lot of things going right for the Ducks, but Boudreau warned of slippage that could creep into their game. If we re playing the Pittsburgh Penguins and we have turnovers like we re doing, they re putting the puck in the net, Boudreau said. If we re playing Vancouver and you give it to the Sedins in the slot, they re putting it in the net. So we ve got to protect the puck better. Said center Mathieu Perreault: Even though we ve been winning so much, we feel like there are a lot of parts of our games that we can improve still. FASTH RETURN It is a crowded Ducks dressing room these days and Viktor Fasth has found himself taking off his gear on a folding chair. The goalie had been receiving additional therapy in dealing with a nagging lower-body injury but took part in a full practice. It was really fun being out there on the ice today again and trying to stop some shots, Fasth said. I wish I could have taken a little more pucks today but I think it felt good. My body felt good. If Fasth continues to improve, it is possible that he joins the club on it s upcoming four-game trip. We had to see where he was, Boudreau said. And so far, the reports are there s nothing to get alarmed about. KOIVU SETBACK The news isn t as good for center Saku Koivu, who has suffered a setback in his recovery from a head injury suffered as a result of an Oct. 27 hit by Columbus forward Brandon Dubinsky. Koivu has been skating recently but before his teammates hit the ice and Boudreau played the go ask the trainer card when asked if the veteran has had a recurrence of symptoms from the hit.

Anaheim Ducks League-leading Ducks play host to Canucks Posted: 11/09/13, 10:22 PM PST Elliott Teaford DUCKS vs. VANCOUVER Faceoff: 5 p.m., Honda Center TV/Radio: Prime, KLAA 830-AM Update: The NHL-leading Ducks (14-3-1, 29 points) have won four consecutive games and are at home. It s their best start to a season since they went , 30 points, to open , when they went on to win the Stanley Cup championship. The Ducks top line of left wing Dustin Penner, center Ryan Getzlaf and right wing Corey Perry is sizzling. Penner has eight points (one goal, seven assists) in his last five games, and the Ducks are with him in their lineup. Penner s plus-minus defensive rating of plus-18 is the best in the league. Getzlaf has a team-leading 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists), and was second in the league in scoring after a four-point game in the Ducks 6-2 win Friday over the Buffalo Sabres (three goals, one assist). Perry has 10 points (five goals, five assists) in his last eight games. The Canucks were , 24 points, going into Saturday s game against the Kings. LA Daily News: LOADED:

Boston Bruins Zdeno Chara a net-front presence on power play By Fluto Shinzawa November 10, 2013 The Bruins scored an early power-play goal. Phil Kessel didn t score. The Bruins survived an early injury to Adam McQuaid. They have Zdeno Chara to thank for most of that. He was a really good player for us tonight, coach Claude Julien said after the Bruins 3-1 win over visiting Toronto. He was one of those players who was probably a game-changer. The captain scored his third goal of the season. They ve all come on the power play, where the former point man is working a new full-time position. When his team is shorthanded, Chara is usually the monster shoving opposing forwards away from his goalie. Now, Chara is inflicting that kind of pain on the power play. On Saturday, it was Dion Phaneuf s turn to be abused. In the first period, with Jay McClement in the box for holding, David Krejci won an offensive-zone faceoff. Chara immediately broke for the front of the net. First, Chara staked his claim to the net-front ice by muscling Phaneuf out of the way. Then when Jarome Iginla gained control of the puck at the side of the net, Chara held his ground. As Phaneuf broke for Iginla, Chara planted his stick on the ice. Chara hauled in Iginla s feed and snapped the puck past James Reimer to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. I m just trying to work really hard, get my possessions, and really be there for loose pucks, Chara said. On that goal, lot of work was being done by the other guys, especially Jarome. He made a great second effort. I ve got an empty net. It s something that really comes down to outworking those four guys. Simple as that. You can have a lot of skill. But if you don t work hard, you re not going to be successful with the puck. Less than six months ago, Chara s man-up work gave the Bruins the confidence to try the big man in front. If not for Chara s screen on Reimer, Patrice Bergeron may not have scored the game-tying goal against Toronto in Game 7 of their first-round series. After all, Chara had spent most of his NHL power-play career working the point and trying to gun his heater on goal. Now, his duties are different. Chara is making the net-front transition look easy. It is anything but simple. It s hard to jostle with prickly defensemen. It saps precious energy to battle one-on-one for a loose puck. It s not easy to put a blade on the ice when an opponent is lifting and slashing that stick. But Chara has natural talent to complement his work ethic. He s got good hands to go with his strength and size, Iginla said. I was already impressed before I got here playing against him and how he can have that patience or toe-drag out. You don t get that many goals or points as a D-man without having that offensive ability. Some players can go all out on the power play. Milan Lucic, for example, doesn t kill penalties. Lucic can empty the tank on his power-play shifts, knowing his coach has other defensive-minded players who will assume the ice upon the penalty s conclusion. Chara, on the other hand, has to save his stuff. Opposing coaches usually roll out their top offensive guns after a successful kill. Toronto coach Randy Carlyle was no different. Carlyle s first post-kill tap is usually on Kessel s shoulder. As the shutdown ace, Chara must switch gears from power-play net-front presence to stay-at-homer. That job change allows for only a few gulps of oxygen on the bench before Chara is asked to go the other way and keep Kessel off the scoresheet. If we start the power play, then I have time to get back out there right after the PP is over, Chara said. It s different when the other group goes first and we go out second. Then it s something where we have to go without that matchup, or other guys have to handle it for a shift. Then we go back to the matchups. Above all else, Chara is about defense. Chara showed it against the Leafs. Chara logged 28:04 of ice time, the most he s skated in a regulation game this season. As usual, Chara changed the game. Kessel took the opening faceoff alongside Mason Raymond and Nazem Kadri. But because Chara was also on the ice, Carlyle waved Kessel to the bench only 10 seconds into the night. Carlyle rolled out Kessel with usual linemates Joffrey Lupul and James van Riemsdyk. But because Julien could counter with Chara, especially with the last change, Carlyle had to rearrange his lines regularly to get Kessel away from his former teammate. Kessel landed three shots in 21:11 of action. Kessel and his teammate went 0 for 3 on the power play. Chara led all Bruins with 3:46 of shorthanded ice time. The Bruins penalty kill is 7 for 7 in the last two games. According to Julien, Chara was especially good in the Bruins 4-1 win over Florida on Tuesday, when the coaching staff instructed the left-side defensemen to stand up the Panthers in the neutral zone. He did the best job by far and really took away what we call the slash play, where the guy cuts to the middle, gets a pass, and carries it with speed, Julien said. He was able to slow them down that way last game. He standing up and did a great job of getting pucks down to the other end. He did that again tonight in the battles. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Right leg injury ends Adam McQuaid s night By Amalie Benjamin November 10, 2013 As Adam McQuaid swept behind the Bruins net, the defenseman felt something in his right leg. He clutched his right groin or hip area and went down to the ice at 7:52 of the first period on Saturday night. Unable to skate off under his own power, he was helped off the ice by Shawn Thornton and Daniel Paille and did not return. He had played just 44 seconds, during which he fought Toronto s Frazer McLaren and earned a five-minute major. There was no significant update on the defenseman s injury following the Bruins 3-1 victory. It s hard to give you a real good assessment after a game, coach Claude Julien said. He didn t come back because he couldn t. We ll probably give you more [on Sunday] when it s a little bit clearer. Injuries sometimes you have to give it at least a day to calm down and see what the situation is. With McQuaid out of the game, the Bruins relied heavily on four of their five remaining defensemen, with Zdeno Chara racking up 28:04 of ice time, Dougie Hamilton playing 24:43, Johnny Boychuk playing 24:28, and Dennis Seidenberg playing 24:15. McQuaid s partner, Torey Krug, added 15:54. We were fine, Julien said. We were fine, we rotated through and they did a good job. Where we lacked was probably in the second period, got away from our game. But that wasn t the defensemen, it was the whole team. The second period featured Toronto throwing 18 shots on net and scoring the team s only goal of the game, by Joffrey Lupul. The Maple Leafs had just 16 shots in the other two periods combined. I think they played solid today, Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask said of the defense. A lot of blocked shots [15]. The second period caught us off guard again; we didn t play good as a team, but I think it was five D s, they battled hard and did the job. The initial plan was to have Brad Marchand and Loui Eriksson alongside Patrice Bergeron on the Bruins second line, and Carl Soderberg and Reilly Smith alongside Chris Kelly on the third line. That all fell apart because of Soderberg s ankle injury and ineffectiveness by Marchand. But after the return of Eriksson, the team has finally been able to reassemble the lines it had hoped for, leading to improvement in not just the second line, but also the third. Smith s play of late has been especially positive. He scored the final goal against the Panthers on Thursday, intercepting a bad pass forced by Soderberg and ripping a shot on goalie Scott Clemmensen. Power surges The Bruins have seen a recent uptick in their special teams play, especially on the penalty kill. Boston allowed goals on five consecutive power plays, starting in a loss to New Jersey Oct. 26, when the team allowed four power-play goals. Since then, the Bruins have killed off consecutive penalties. Our PK has been good this year, Julien said. The only reason we re down there in our PK is because of that one game against Jersey. Other than that we d be in the top two or three in the league. So one game really did some damage there. I think we went from second or third down to 24th or fourth to 24th in one game. So that s how bad it was. The Bruins came in ranked 20th on the power play, at 15.9 percent, then connected on two of three chances Saturday. Our power play, again always looking to improve, but we re certainly spending more time in the offensive zone, certainly moving the puck better; more chances this year, he said. Hopefully if the finish can come, then we ve got a decent power play. It hasn t hurt us like it has in the past, and that s a good sign. Sorry situation Chris Kelly said he didn t get a chance to watch the video made by Brendan Shanahan regarding the hit on Thursday night that resulted in a three-game suspension for the Panthers Jesse Winchester, but he repeated his belief Winchester was not trying to hurt him. It s such a quick game, Kelly said. Guys react. No one s intentionally trying to hurt anyone. That s my opinion. Maybe certain guys it is, but reaction in sport, sometimes those plays happen. Winchester told the Ottawa Sun on Saturday, I m guilty, and said he respected the NHL s decision to suspend him. While Winchester, a former teammate of Kelly s, hadn t reached out to the Bruins center on Friday, he said on Saturday that he had tried to reach him. He added, He is a mentor. I didn t want to hurt him. Point in his favor Krug has six goals this season, tied for tops among defensemen. Julien sees that as a product of confidence. He s got lots of it right now, Julien said. He s got the experience and he seems to have the knack to jump into the holes at the right time. Julien did say the team is trying to make sure Krug is not too aggressive in entering the offensive zone, that he picks his spots. But it s about confidence and not just confidence, but also he s got a pretty accurate shot, he said. When he gets those opportunities, he seems to be able to find those open spots there in the net area to score some of those goals. That s something that you either have or you don t have, and he seems pretty good at that.... Matt Bartkowski and Jordan Caron were the Bruins healthy scratches. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Bruins able to overpower Leafs By Amalie Benjamin / Globe Staff / November 9, 2013 There had been small improvements, small indications that the Bruins were working harder on the power play, that more results might be in the team s future. Of course, the Bruins still stood at 20th in the NHL in the power play, a position that must have been familiar to them after years of power-play futility. They ll be moving up after Saturday s 3-1 win over the Maple Leafs, scoring their eighth and ninth power-play goals of the season. The second of those power-play goals, the game-winner, came from Patrice Bergeron at 1:06 of the third period as he beat Toronto s James Reimer (31 saves). Bergeron, of course, scored the tying and winning goals against Reimer on May 13, the Game 7 comeback for the ages that sent the Bruins on to the next round and, eventually, the Stanley Cup Final. He was the first forward to score for the Bruins on the power play this season, after Torey Krug (3), Zdeno Chara (3), and Dougie Hamilton. Chara s third PPG of the season came at 15:27 of the first. The win took, too, an impressive night of work for the Bruins defensemen after Adam McQuaid was lost for the game at 7:52 of the first period. That left the Bruins with five defenders for the rest of the night, but they managed to hold Toronto to one score, with Joffrey Lupul beating Tuukka Rask (33 saves) at 16:52 of the second. Bergeron added another with 21.7 seconds left into an empty net. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Bergeron scores winner; Bruins beat Leafs 3-1 By KEN POWTAK / Associated Press / November 9, 2013 BOSTON (AP) Patrice Bergeron scored a power-play goal early in the third period and Tuukka Rask stopped 33 shots, lifting the Boston Bruins to a 3-1 win over Toronto on Saturday night in the teams first meeting since their playoff series last spring. Bergeron also added an empty-netter with 22 seconds to play, and Zdeno Chara also had a power-play goal for Boston. The Bruins won for only the third time in seven games. Joffrey Lupul scored for the Maple Leafs, who lost for just the second time in six games. In Game 7 of the opening round of the last season s Eastern Conference playoffs, Boston trailed by three goals with a little over 10 minutes left before forcing overtime with the final two goals coming 31 seconds apart in the closing 90 seconds of regulation. Bergeron scored the game winner in OT, capping an improbable comeback. On Saturday, skating during the closing part of James van Riemsdyk s double-minor penalty for high-sticking Johnny Boychuk late in the second period, Bergeron jumped in on a rebound in front and fired it past sprawling goaltender James Reimer 1:06 into the final period. Winger Carl Soderberg backhanded the puck on net from near the bottom of the right circle. Reimer made 31 saves. Boston killed off a penalty late in the game when Soderberg was sent off for holding the stick. The Maple Leafs went 0 for 3 on the power play. The Bruins had grabbed a 1-0 lead on Chara s power-play goal off a rebound 15:27 into the opening period. David Krejci won the faceoff back to defenseman Torey Krug, who sent a cross-ice pass to Jarome Iginla. The winger slipped a backhand on net that Chara, positioned in front, banged past Reimer before two Maple Leafs defenseman could clear the puck. If it wasn t for solid play by Reimer it could have been a bigger deficit for Toronto. Boston outshot the Maple Leafs 14-7 in the opening period, keeping the puck in the offensive zone for long stretches. Bruins winger Chris Kelly fired a shot off the crossbar 90 seconds into the game and Reimer made nice stops on close bids by Krug and Iginla about 20 seconds apart 5 minutes into the game. But in the second period, the Maple Leafs outshot Boston and controlled play for lengthy stretches. Toronto tied the game at 1 on Lupul s goal late in the second. Paul Ranger sent a long clearing pass to Lupul, who broke in down the right wing before firing a shot that beat Rask over his left shoulder, slipping the puck just inside the right post. There were a fairly large number of blue Maple Leafs home jerseys sprinkled throughout the stands, and a big roar went up when Lupul scored. NOTES: Bruins D Adam McQuaid went down grabbing his right hip area midway into the opening period, had to be helped from the ice and didn t return. There was no update from the team on his injury other than an announcement early in the second that he would not return.... It was the first of four games between the teams.... Toronto s Phil Kessel needs two points to reach 400 for his career.... The Bruins held Progeria Night, raising funds for research to help find a cure for the accelerated aging disease that affects one in every 4 to 8 million newborns. Sam Berns from Foxborough, Mass. dropped the ceremonial first puck.... Former Bruin Terry O'Reilly watched the game from a luxury box. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Bruins lose Adam McQuaid for game Posted by Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff November 9, :50 PM Adam McQuaid was knocked out of tonight s game against Toronto at 7:52 of the first period. McQuaid appeared to suffer a groin or hip injury. McQuaid had pivoted behind the Boston net when he suffered the injury. McQuaid reached for the area, fell to the ice, and couldn t get back on his skates. Daniel Paille and Shawn Thornton helped McQuaid off the ice. McQuaid did not put any weight on his right leg. McQuaid played just two shifts for 0:44 of ice time. McQuaid fought Frazer McLaren on his first shift. If McQuaid is unavailable for Monday s game against Tampa Bay, Matt Bartkowski will return to the lineup. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Game 16: Maple Leafs at Bruins Posted by Amalie Benjamin November 9, :37 AM It's all about revenge here tonight at the Garden. The last time the Maple Leafs were in Boston, as you might recall, they were on the losing end of a miraculous comeback for the Bruins. Boston was down 4-1 in Game 7 of their playoff series when, with 11 minutes to go, they started a comeback that finished with Patrice Bergeron's overtime goal that sent them on in the postseason. The Bruins have been doing their best to downplay that angle for this game, insisting that it's more important because it's a divisional rival ahead of them in the standings. But that doesn't mean that the Leafs feel the same way. James Reimer is expected to get the start for Toronto. He, of course, was in net against the Bruins on May 13 for the collapse. Game time: 7 p.m. TV/Radio: CBC/NHL Network/NESN/98.5 The Sports Hub Records: Bruins 9-5-1, Maple Leafs Projected lineups: Milan Lucic-David Krejci-Jarome Iginla Brad Marchand-Patrice Bergeron-Loui Eriksson Carl Soderberg-Chris Kelly-Reilly Smith Daniel Paille-Gregory Campbell-Shawn Thornton Zdeno Chara-Johnny Boychuk Dennis Seidenberg-Dougie Hamilton Torey Krug-Adam McQuaid Tuukka Rask Chad Johnson Notes: The Bruins are in their last 11 games against the Leafs, and in their last 27 against Toronto in the regular season.... The last year when the Bruins had a sub-.500 record against the Leafs in the regular season was After allowing goals on five straight power plays, the Bruins have killed the last 15 penalties against them.... Both Reilly Smith and Dougie Hamilton have three-game point streaks. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Blow-by-blow account Sunday, November 10, 2013 Stephen Harris On a memorable night at the Hartford Civic Center in the early 1980s, Bruins defenseman Gord Kluzak and Whalers winger Torrie Robertson had three thunderous fights in a row. It was fight, go in the penalty box. After five minutes, step back on the ice leaving sticks and gloves in the box fight again. Serve another five minutes, and then back out for a third-round right in front of the box. I m sure every fan there hated it, right? David M. Singer said jokingly, knowing that everybody in the arena that night had to be thrilled watching these two warriors go toe-to-toe. A New Yorker, Singer grew up an Islanders fan, and later became a highly successful website developer. He found a way to combine two of his passions: The Internet and hockey or more specifically, hockey fights and the remarkable men who engage in them. Singer created hockeyfights.com, a true wonder of the web an ever-expanding database covering the present and past of fights in the NHL and many other hockey leagues. On the site, fans can find out not just about every one of current bruisers Colton Orr s fights but also all of Bobby Orr s and his peers. Their database is absolutely astonishing, Bruins NESN play-by-play announcer Jack Edwards said. Hockeyfights.com was born as a mere paragraph or two on Singer s personal web page in By 1999, it was a standalone site. But his interest in fighters began years earlier. Being a fan when I was younger, I d go to events where you d get to meet players, and the nicest guys were always the tough guys, said Singer. Seeing fights was one of the reasons you loved going to games. They would get you up out of your seat. There was all kinds of information about goal-scorers, but I didn t feel any attention was being paid to one of the other elements that people really seem to get excited about when they re at games. The enforcers were the best guys and they were never on the cover of any magazines. Singer works these days at high levels of web development, but somehow, with the help of a fairly small group of volunteer assistants, he manages to keep hockeyfights.com updated daily while working to fill in gaps in information from years past, add videos of bouts, write features, etc. It s a crazy hobby, said Singer. I do it whenever I can. I go to work, go home, play with the kids, hop on the website and I m up pretty late. Some nights are busier than others. By Friday morning, hockeyfights.com had descriptions, video, a proclaimed winner and a slew of fan comments on Shawn Thornton s and Gregory Campbell s bouts vs. Florida. Understandably, Singer is frequently asked to name the all-time NHL heavyweight champ. His answer: Former Red Wings tough guy Bob Probert. Singer sees an evolution in fighting styles and in the fighters: Go back years and more, and fights were just a routine, occasional part of the game. But Montreal s John Ferguson changed that. One of the best examples of the beginning of the tough guy was Ferguson, because that was definitely part of his job description, said Singer. Before that, fights were just something that happened. Once John Ferguson came around, having a fighter became a necessity. In the 60s, 70s and into the 80s, many of the top fighters were also top players: Ferguson certainly was, as were stars such as Terry O Reilly, Clark Gillies, Wayne Cashman, Larry Playfair, and later the likes of Cam Neely, Probert, Rick Tocchet and Wendel Clark. But then, just as with all sports, things became much more specialized, including fighting, said Singer. It became the era of the goon, guys of limited ability, maybe only playing 1-2 shifts per game, on the team for just one thing: To fight. But now Singer sees a return to the days when the guys who can fight can also play. Just how much longer fighting will remain a valuable and entertaining part of NHL play is in doubt. Clearly there is an effort underway to remove fisticuffs from the game. NESN s Edwards summed up Singer s on-going dedication to chronicling fights amid an encroaching tide. To me, it s like tracking the dinosaurs, even knowing the asteroid is coming. Singer laughed, but agreed with Edwards point. I think they re working to diminish (fighting) quickly at this point, whereas before it was a slow fade, said Singer. For years it s been, Let s get the lumbering enforcer out of the game. Yes, there are still some in the league, but for the most part if you compare now to 15 years ago, it s not the same, not even close. I don t think it will ever be fully out of the game. I just think they ll enact more rules to try to decrease the number of fights, and try to push teams toward having certain types of players on their roster. Singer will continue adding new content to his site. Two items on his to-do list: A ranking of fighters career won-loss-draw records, and an enforcers Hall of Fame. He s going to keep giving these warriors the attention they deserve even if the asteroid that may make them extinct is on its way. This week s B s timeline Tomorrow vs. Tampa Bay, 1:05 p.m. The Bruins have handled the Lightning better than the rest of the league, defeating them twice in October. Under first-year coach Jon Cooper, the Bolts have star power (Martin St. Louis, Steve Stamkos) and a strong supporting cast. Thursday vs. Columbus, 7:05 p.m. Former Bruin Nathan Horton is still a month or more away from returning from shoulder surgery. The B s won in Columbus Oct. 12. Vezina Trophy goalie Sergei Bobrovsky has been good, not great. Marian Gaborik is the top threat on a somewhat nondescript club. Friday at Ottawa, 7:35 p.m. The B s get their first look at the Senators, who have struggled, especially at home. The Bruins have won 13 of the last 15 games between the teams. An interesting matchup-within-the-game: Erik Karlsson vs. Tory Krug in a battle of unique offensive defensemen. FELLOW EX-BRUIN TALLAS HEAPS PRAISE ON THOMAS Florida Panthers goalie coach Rob Tallas, a former Bruin, had a rave review for Tim Thomas during the B s 4-1 win Thursday against the Panthers. He s been fantastic, said Tallas. It s unfortunate he s been hurt twice, but in both cases he s worked extremely hard to get back. His attitude has been great. He s coming off 15 months of not playing and he s eager and really wants to get back at it. He s got a lot to prove. He wants to prove to everybody that he still can play at the top of his game. Seeing him in practice, his work ethic, how he stops the puck, how he competes, really he hasn t missed a beat at all. Boston Herald LOADED:
