2 OHL PRIORITY SELECTION OHL Priority Selection Process In 2001, the Ontario Hockey League conducted the annual Priority Selection process by way of the Internet for the first time in league history. The new process allowed for eligible players and their families, as well as fans across the league to follow the process in real time online. The 2011 OHL Priority Selection will once again be conducted online on Saturday May 7, 2011 beginning at 9:00 a.m. You can follow the entire process online at Player Eligibility North American players born between January 1, 1992 and December 31, 1995 from protected OHL territories are eligible for selection in the 15 rounds of the 2011 OHL Priority Selection. Selected Players in the OHL OHL Member Teams are permitted to register a maximum of four 16 year old players selected in the OHL Priority Selection. Those 16 year old players that are allowed to be signed are the first two 16 year old players selected and a maximum addition of two 16 year old wild carded players in any round of the OHL Priority Selection. All other 16-year-old players selected are eligible to be called up as an affiliated player or floating affiliate player for a maximum of 10 games or for any OHL regular season or playoff games when such player s team has been eliminated from competition for that season. Order of Selection The order of selection is determined by inverse order of finish during the past OHL regular season schedule of games with non-playoff teams selecting ahead of playoff teams. Teams are permitted to trade draft choices, other than their first round selection, during the trading period from Monday May 2 to Friday May 6, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. OHL Central Scouting The Central Scouting Bureau of the Ontario Hockey League is an information service and support organization designed to provide the Member Teams with a reference in regards to the players available for selection in the annual Priority Selection Process. The primary objective of OHL Central Scouting is to identify, rate and rank players to be eligible for the Priority Selection, according to their OHL potential. OHL Member Teams combine player data received from the Central Scouting Bureau with evaluations from their team scouting staffs to make their player selections. The OHL Central Scouting Bureau has been evaluating players since the season. 3 OHL Scholarship Program Once a player graduates from the OHL, he will receive a minimum scholarship of tuition, textbooks and compulsory fees towards an undergraduate degree for each year played in the Ontario Hockey League. Photos: Aaron Bell/OHL The OHL Scholarship can be applied to a program that is different than a traditional university or college four-year undergraduate degree / diploma program such as a Technical or Trade School, Firefighting or EMS. The OHL Scholarship Program is administered through the league office. Other scholarship criteria to note: At the conclusion of a player s junior eligibility the player has 18 months to access his scholarship therefore allowing him to play minor professional hockey. A player s scholarship may be utilized at any recognized university/college in the world. He missed the majority of the season rehabbing his shoulder after a late summer surgery. He started skating in mid December and finally returning to game action in late January. He possesses a ton of natural and raw ability. He has legitimate size, very good hands and he skates quite well considering his physical stature and his time rehabbing his injury this year. He displays a long stride, that can generate some real speed and quickness when he is full stride. CHRIS BIGRAS LD Barrie Colts Ht: 6.00 Wt: 165 lbs 2/22/1995 Home: Elmvale, ON Scouting Report: Bigras is a big bodied, two way defenseman who has shown some offensive upside, and who has improved thus far this season. He has a good collection of physical tools. He is pretty effective when he is moving north and south and he competes at a high level, which helps him compensate for any shortcomings when moving laterally. He uses an active stick and his long reach to take away time and space and close on puck carriers when they are attacking wide with speed. He likes to play a very active and involved game, always being a part of the play. NICHOLAS BAPTISTE RW Ottawa Senators Ht: 6.00 Wt: 170 lbs 8/4/1995 Home: Nepean, ON Scouting Report: Baptiste is a smart, highly skilled offensive minded forward who plays both a finesse and a power styled game. He is blessed with a solid collection of physical tools. He has very good size, a tall and rangy frame with the potential to really fill out and get stronger. He also possesses a very good stick, he can handle the puck and makes plays, and most importantly he can to it while at top speed. Bateman also has a very good stick, displaying the ability to carry and move the puck with a high level of poise and composure. Butcher has good feet, displaying great four way mobility which he uses to his advantage. He has the ability to cover a lot of geography in his own zone and he can quickly take away time and space, or jump up into the play to join the rush. Chatham possesses a very good and attractive collection of physical tools. He has legitimate size, he is an above average skater and he possesses a real good stick, especially his ability to finish. He has a very smooth and effective stride, and when he is moving his feet he shows some real high end speed and quickness. He is an excellent skater, displaying speed and quickness. Most importantly, he tends to keep his feet moving at all times, preferring to and showing the ability to play the game at a high speed. He plays a pretty intelligent game, using his speed and quickness to support the play, getting himself around the puck all times. He also has very good hands, showing the ability to handle the puck and makes plays. He is an excellent skater, displaying great mobility, speed and quickness. He played a real high risk, high reward style of game that was almost purely focused on creating offensive chances and opportunities but really reigned in his game this season, playing a more controlled and simpler game. DeAngelo has a very good stick, and he does show confidence in his ability to handle the puck and make plays. He is the type of player that just goes out and plays a very subtle, almost business like game, but by doing so he contributes immensely to his teams success. He is a very intelligent forward who also possesses a solid collection of physical tools. He has increased his size and strength and has added a more prominent physical element to his offensive and defensive game. He displays some real top end north and south speed. He possesses a very good stick, displaying the ability to handle the puck and makes plays, which is impressive when you consider his large physical stature. He moves around the ice effectively, and he does show some flashes of speed when he is moving north and south. He just has the look of a player that hasnt really come to terms with his size, and as he matures, gets stronger and gets on the ice more his skating should improve. He has legitimate size, which he uses to its fullest potential. He has a very good stick, and he has better than average feet; especially when you consider his physical size. He is very strong on his skates, and he shows flashes of top end speed and quickness when he is skating north and south. He likes to have the puck on his stick and handles the puck with some confidence. He shows the ability to beat a defender and uses his size and speed effectively. He possesses good physical tools, is strong on his skates and skates well considering his physical frame. He displays quickness on his initial first few strides and gets up to full speed very effectively. He plays an honest game, skating up and down his wing, providing an outlet for a pass in his own zone while also coming back hard and looking after his defensive responsibilities. He seems to be the type of player who wants the puck when it matters, and when he does get it he will do whatever is necessary to make things happen. He tends to play the game with a little more urgency offensively. He possessed speed and quickness and he seems to move a lot quicker when he has possession of the puck. He uses his quickness to his advantage in small areas, darting in and out of the open areas to beat defenders. HUNTER GARLENT RC Welland Tigers Ht: 5.08 Wt: 150 lbs 2/4/1995 Home: Thorold, ON Scouting Report: Garlent is a smaller, highly skilled forward that loves to have the puck on his stick. He has produced offensively since the start of the season and rarely a game will go by without Garlent scoring a timely or a highlight reel goal. While you really notice him offensively, he does play pretty effectively in his own zone, and away from the puck. He possesses great individual tools, and displays a high level of skill. While he is on the smaller size, he relies on his skating, mobility and puck handling to become such a dangerous player. Downing possesses a great collection of physical tools, he has size, a very good stick and he displays excellent feet. He is very mobile on his skates, and he possesses a very smooth and almost effortless stride that helps him generate high end speed and quickness. He has the ability to carry and handle the puck, and for the most part he plays the game like a fourth forward. He just oozes a ton of natural ability. He plays very tough on the puck and he shows no hesitation playing in traffic and in all of the tough areas. He competes at a high level, especially on the puck. He can be pretty tenacious and relentless when he is pursuing the puck and on the offensive attack. Horvat shows flashes of quickness when he needs it, especially when he is playing on the puck. He has a very good, and quick stick and he is at his best when he has possession of the puck. He carries the puck with a ton of composure and shows the ability to create offensively. When he has possession he can be slippery and tough to defend against. He is at his best when he is moving his feet, using his quickness to dart in and out of the openings and trying to find some time and space. He is at his best when he has the puck on his stick and handles it with a ton of confidence. He loves to attack on the rush and isnt afraid to attack one on one. He possesses a ton of physical tools and he has the potential to be a dominant player. He tends to spend most of his time down the middle but he might project more as a right winger at the next level. He has all the qualities you look for in a power forward - size, good individual skills skating ability. Maletta skates with a wide base and his strides are powerful. He has great size, skates well and has better than average stick skills. McCarron has all the tools to develop into a proverbial power forward at the next level. He displays the ability to handle the puck and make plays using both his size and strength as well as a little bit of finesse. McCarron also has a very strong and long skating stride that generates speed and quickness. He uses his long reach and an active stick to take away shooting and passing lanes. He tries to keep the play in front of him at all times and mainly looks to move the puck up ice to the open man. He also isn t afraid to carry the puck out of the zone when he has an opening. McCoshan has a good collection of physical tools, including legitimate size and good feet. He moves around the ice quite well. DARNELL NURSE LD Don Mills Flyers Ht: 6.03 Wt: 175 lbs 2/4/1995 Home: Hamilton, ON Scouting Report: Nurse is an outstanding two-way defender who contributes in all three zones. He possesses tremendous physical tools, size, strength and his play displays a high level of hockey IQ. He logged a ton of ice-time this season, playing in all situations and handled all the work quite well. Nurse is considered one of the premier defensemen at this age group. He moves around the ice with a very long, almost effortless and very efficient stride. He has the ability to cover a ton of territory and coupled with his strong positional play, he is very tough to beat one-on-one. NICK MOUTRY LW York Simcoe Express Ht: 6.01 Wt: 185 lbs 6/24/1995 Home: Shelburne, ON Scouting Report: Moutry is a forward that played all three positions this season. He has been blessed with an abundance of physical tools. He has size, a very good stick and he can get up and down the ice effectively. He makes a lot of smart touches with the puck and makes pretty solid decisions. He is at his best in the offensive zone, especially below the top of the face off circles. He plays in all of the tough areas and he uses his size quite effectively. He protects the puck quite well, and works hard to get it to a teammate in a good support position. Darnell Nurse ZACK NASTASIUK RW Barrie Colts Ht: 6.01 Wt: 175 lbs 3/30/1995 Home: Barrie, ON Scouting Report: Natasiuk is a solid two way forward that also brings a lot of offensive productivity and potential to the table. He plays an honest, major junior style of game. He competes and works hard at a very consistent level and he wont cheat you on effort. He has very good size, which he uses to his advantage. He has a very good stick, displaying the ability to handle the puck and make plays. He has a bit of a short and choppy stride, but once he gets moving he does shows flashes of speed and quickness. He is very strong on his skates, and he shows the ability to skate through checks. BRENT PEDERSEN LW Waterloo Wolves Ht: 6.01 Wt: 190 lbs 7/5/1995 Home: Arthur, ON Scouting Report: Pedersen is a skilled forward who possesses some impressive physical tools. He played all three forward positions so far this season, but seemed to spend the majority of his time down the middle. He has size, good feet and some high end skill. When he is really moving he displays a real long stride that generates a good level of speed and quickness. He uses his speed when attacking off the wing and taking the puck wide before breaking hard to the net. He is very strong on his skates and shows the ability to skate through checks. He is blessed with a very impressive collection of physical tools - legitimate physical size, a good stick and good feet. He is a very good skater, especially when you consider his large physical stature, and when it is needed he has the ability to find a high speed extra gear. When he wants to he can just fly up the ice, and he uses his speed to stretch defenders and open up time and space for his linemates. CHARLIE PELNIK LD Carolina Hurricanes Ht: 6.03 Wt: 180 lbs 5/15/1995 Home: Cary, NC Scouting Report: Pelnik is a physical stay at home defenseman who plays the game with a real edge and a nasty streak. He possesses good physical size and he uses all of it to his advantage. He never turns up and opportunity to get his body on an opponent and he isnt shy about using his stick to punish a puck carrier along the walls or in the corner. He always clears the crease and protects his goalie. He skates quite well for a player of his physical stature, and he has made considerable improvement since the start of the season. He possesses good physical tools, is strong on his skates and skates well considering his large physical frame. He plays a pretty honest game, skating up and down his wing, providing an outlet for a pass up ice in his own zone while also coming back hard and looking after his defensive responsibilities. He is strong on the wall and works hard to protect the puck and get it out of the zone. He also moves and distributes the puck quickly. NICHOLAS RITCHIE Ht: 6.02 Wt: 205 lbs 12/5/1995 Home: Orangeville, ON LW Toronto Marlboros Scouting Report: Ritchie has the physical tools of a prototypical power forward while possessing a higher level of skill usually associated with a player with his physical stature. Overall, he might be the one player available this year that possesses all the ingredients you look for in a hockey player. He has size, skill, very good feet, some toughness and he competes at a consistent high level. He has a great stick, displaying a real soft touch which is more remarkable when you consider his physical size. He almost handles the puck and makes plays like the traditional highly skilled smaller player. STUART POMEROY RD Chicago Young Americans Ht: 6.02 Wt: 190 lbs 2/5/1995 Home: Glenview, Ill Scouting Report: Pomeroy is a right handed defender who possesses a good collection of physical tools, and while he is a little raw, he just oozes upside and potential. He likes to play a pretty active and involved offensive minded game and brings an element of toughness and grit to the table on a consistent basis. He has good mobility and when combined with his size and reach, he has the ability to cover a lot of territory in his own zone. He isnt shy about initiating contact and finishes his checks on a very consistent basis. More importantly, he finishes his checks with a purpose. He possesses a ton of natural ability, has high end stick skills, displays the ability to make plays and carry the puck while at top speed. He also has great feet, speed and quickness. His acceleration is excellent and he has the special ability to find that extra gear that can create time, space and most importantly separation from defenders. He possesses good size, adequate skating and mobility. Santini is mainly focused on his defensive responsibilities and doesn t take many chances, preferring to play very conservatively. He does show the ability to complete the safe 10ft pass in the defensive zone and if there isnt an option available he does not hesitate using the glass/boards to get the puck into the neutral zone. In the instances where he has time and space he will carry the puck up ice until he finds a solid passing option. Jordan Subban ALEXANDER SMITH RD Detroit Honeybaked Mid. He uses his quickness to dart in and out of the openings, always working to get himself into a good support position. Sterk also has excellent puck skills. He possesses size with a lanky frame with a lot of potential for growth. He skates quite well considering his physical stature and works pretty hard to maintain defensive positioning. Vershay is pretty focused on his defensive responsibilities. He doesn t force, and he keeps the puck and the play in front of him in all three zones. He always clears the zone as the puck moves up the ice and he rarely gets caught out of position. He is a pass first defensemen, always looking to move the puck up the ice. THOMAS WELSH LD Salisbury Prep Ht: 5.10 Wt: 170 lbs 2/1/1995 Home: Toronto, ON NA Scouting Report: Welsh is an effective two-way defenseman who plays a smart and well rounded game. While he isn t really flashy or dynamic, he plays a very smart and effective two-way game. He looks after his own defensive responsibilities and jumps in offensively at opportune moments. He doesn t get himself into trouble while being involved and active in both ends of the ice. He has average size but plays the game with a fair amount of an edge. He finishes his checks and plays the game a lot bigger than his physical size. Welsh also is a better than average skater. MIKE VLAJKOV LD St. Catharines Falcons Ht: 6.02 Wt: 175 lbs 2/3/1995 Home: St. Catharines, ON Scouting Report: Vlajkov is an effective defenseman who has shown he can contribute in both ends of the rink. He possesses a good collection of physical tools. He has also shown that he has the ability to handle the puck and chip in offensively. Vlajkov displays good mobility and a long stride which should improve as he gets stronger and matures. He moves north/south quite effectively, especially when he is carrying the puck and moving up the ice. He also works hard to maintain body position, keeping himself between the puck carrier and his net. ALEX YUILL LD Quinte Red Devils Ht: 5.08 Wt: 150 lbs 5/27/1995 Home: Wellington, ON Scouting Report: Yuill is a smart, highly skilled defenseman. He plays a very controlled and composed game, showing the ability to move the puck and contribute offensively. He is an excellent skater with a smooth and almost effortless stride. He is very mobile, which allows him to cover a ton of geography, taking away time and space in a very efficient manner. Yuill also has a very good stick. He handles the puck with a ton of composure and has the ability to carry the puck out of the zone or move it up ice via the pass. He utilizes a soft touch when getting the puck to the open man.
