RANKINGS USC opened the year ranked No. 25 in both the NSCAA and Soccer America preseason polls, but dropped out of the polls after opening losses. Oregon State is ranked highest this week at No. 19 in the SoccerTimes poll and is No. 23 according to NSCAA, and Oregon is unranked. SCOUTING OSU The No. 19 Beavers are overall and 1-0 in Pac-12 play after opening conference action with a 2-0 win over Colorado. Chelsea Buckland leads OSU in scoring with six goals, and Jenna Richardson is next with three. Goalkeeper Colleen Boyd has made 25 saves and allowed five goals in her eight appearances for the Beavers. Linus Rhode is in his fourth season as head coach of the Beavers, who went overall last season and were in Pac-10 play on the way to an NCAA Second Round appearance. SCOUTING OREGON The Ducks are overall and 0-1 in Pac-12 play after opening conference action with a 2-0 loss to Utah. Julie Armstrong leads the Ducks with four goals, and goalkeeper Abby Steel has made 32 saves with 11 goals against in her 10 appearances. Tara Erickson is in her seventh season as head coach of the Ducks, who went overall and were in Pac-10 play last season. LAST WEEK USC set a new school record with the fastest goal scored in program history, but it wasn t enough for the Trojan women s soccer team to hold on against visiting Washington State in the teams Pac-12 opener. Samantha Johnson struck for the Women of Troy on an assist from Haley Boysen just 14 seconds into the game, only to see the Cougars stabilize in the second half and hand the Trojans their fifth home loss of the year with a 66th minute equalizer and 86th minute WSU winner. The 2-1 loss put the Trojans on a four-match losing skid and has them at a winless 0-5 at home so far this season. SPEEDY SAMANTHA SETS THE RECORD Samantha Johnson drilled a historic goal for the Trojans when Haley Boysen sent in a centering pass from the left sideline against WSU on Sept. 25. Charging into the box, Johnson headed the ball through, rattling the back of the net as the Women of Troy got a 1-0 lift just 14 seconds into the action at McAlister Field. The goal marked a new school record for the quickest goal in a game, shaving two seconds off the previous record set in 2005 by Tracy Lansing at the 16-second mark. In USC history, the Trojans now have scored in the opening minute of play five times (2011, 2005, 2003, 1998, 1997). ROAD WARRIORS While USC s home turf has been a difficult stage for the Trojans so far, the Women of Troy have grabbed some important wins on the road. In the first weekend of September, USC turned an early-season slump into a three-game winning streak after a victorious weekend run through out-of-state competition. 2 HEAD COACH ALI KHOSROSHAHIN Ali Khosroshahin enters his fifth season at the helm of the USC women s soccer program, having guided the Women of Troy to the 2007 National Championship in his first season and to NCAA appearances in the past three years as well. In 2007, Khosroshahin became the first coach to win the national title in his first season with his program, and accumulated a number of other firsts for himself and the Trojans. After leading USC to the first NCAA title for the program and for the Pac-10, Khosroshahin was named the National Coach of the Year by the NSCAA, SoccerBuzz and Soccer America. Also named the SoccerBuzz West Region Coach of the Year, Khosroshahin had garnered a career-best win total with USC s overall record in In 2008, Khosroshahin (pronounced ho-sro-sha-heen) guided the Trojans into the NCAA Tournament once again, reaching the NCAA Third Round and finishing with a overall record. Khosroshahin s 2009 and 2010 Trojans also reached the NCAA Tournament, appearing in the First Round in 2009 and the Second Round in 2010, where USC fell to eventual champion Notre Dame. His overall coaching career record now stands at (.681) with a (.725) mark in four seasons at USC. In his 10 seasons as a head coach, Khosroshahin s teams have made a combined seven NCAA appearances, including USC s four straight trips in his first four seasons at Troy. Khosroshahin also coaches in the Olympic Development Program as the head coach for the Cal South `98 born girls and has been in the position since He also presently serves as the assistant coach for the Region IV `96 born girls. This past summer, he saw three of his former players compete for their respective countries at the 2012 Women s World Cup. U.S. Olympic gold-medalist Amy Rodriguez was a member of the World Cup champion Team USA squad, while Marlene Sandoval competed for Mexico and Karen Bardsley played for England. In summer 2008, Khosroshahin traveled to Africa to participate in workshops supporting the Sport for Social Change Initiative, which is working to establish a network for organizations promoting the development of girls soccer programs in Kenya. Also, as assistant coach of the Under-17 Mexican National Team, Khosroshahin was in Trinidad & Tobago to coach Mexico at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 2008 FIFA Under-17 Women s World Cup. Khosroshahin came to Troy after spending six years as the head women s coach at Cal State Fullerton. While coaching the Titans, he was honored as the Big West Coach of the Year three times, as he guided the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances. The Titans had winning seasons in each of Khoroshahin s six years there ( ). Khosroshahin recorded a number of milestones during his time at Cal State Fullerton after taking over a fledgling program that had posted winning records only twice in its previous eight-year history. He won 64.8% of his matches ( ), including a (71.0%) league mark. His 76 overall wins and 34 Big West victories were more than the school had totaled in either category before he took over. Before taking over at Cal State Fullerton, he was an assistant with the Titans women s and men s programs for four years ( ). Khosroshahin also has coached at the international level. He was an assistant with Mexico during the 1999 Women s World Cup, was on the staff of Mexico s U-19 Women s National Program in 2004 and the U-20 squad in 2005 and helped the Mexican women s team prepare for the 2004 Olympics. Khosroshahin was a two-year ( ) letterman at Cal State Fullerton before transferring to Cal State Los Angeles for his final two seasons ( ). He played two years ( ) with the Standard Falcons and then 1997 with the Valley Eagles in the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues (USISL). He has his A coaching license, with the U.S. Soccer Federation. Born Feb. 26, 1970, Khosroshahin received his bachelor s degree in business administration (marketing management emphasis) from Cal State Los Angeles in He and his wife Allison reside in Los Angeles ȦLI S HEAD COACHING RECORD OVERALL CONFERENCE Year School W L T PCT W L T PCT (Conf.) 2001 CSF (Big West) 2002 CSF (Big West) 2003 CSF (Big West) 2004 CSF (Big West) 2005 CSF (Big West) 2006 CSF (Big West) 2007 USC (Pac-10) 2008 USC (Pac-10) 2009 USC (Pac-10) 2010 USC (Pac-10) USC 4 years CAREER 9 years an offensive onslaught that rang up a 3-1 victory, with a 17th minute goal from Ashley Freyer leading into two second-half strikes by the Trojans. Haley Boysen scored on a Brittany Kerridge assist in the 57th minute, and Kerridge converted on a penalty kick in the 66th to put USC ahead 3-0 for some padding. A 74th minute score by the Illini put the game-winner as Boysen s blast, and USC had some momentum to carry them across the state lines. On Sunday, the Trojans fought out of a halftime hole to claim an overtime victory over host Purdue, thanks to an equalizer from Elizabeth Eddy and the game-winner from Courtney Garcia in OT. Goalie Shelby Church had another six-save outing for the Trojans, rounding out a strong weekend in goal for the USC sophomore. Both games were a part of the Illini/Boilermaker Cup, and four Women of Troy earned All-Tournament Team honors on the successful road trip: Brittany Kerridge, Shelby Church, Carly Butcher and Ashley Freyer. For her two-assist, one-goal effort on the weekend, Kerridge was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week and as one of CollegeSoccer360.com s Primetime Performers of the Week. TROUBLE AT HOME USC s five losses sustained at McAlister marks the most losses taken by the Trojans on that field in a season and most overall home losses since The Women of Troy look to turn the tables on that slump this weekend as they are shifting focus to familiar foes with their second home stand of Pac-12 play at McAlister Field. INJURY REPORT USC has three players sidelined for the season with ACL injuries. Sophomore defender Mia Bruno suffered a tear during the spring; freshman defender Heather Davis was injured during high school; and redshirt sophomore Morgan Morrow recently sustained another season-ending injury. LAST SEASON USC went overall last season after a third-place finish in the Pac-10 with a mark. The Trojans reached the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season, beating Illinois 3-1 in the first round before falling 4-0 to eventual NCAA champion Notre Dame. Ashli Sandoval was USC s top scorer with six goals including three game-winners while Autumn Altamirano and Elizabeth Eddy each added five goals. Karter Haug was USC s assists leader with six assists, and Shelby Church was USC s goalkeeper of record in all games as she hauled in 82 saves with 25 goals against. Pac-10 honors went to seniors Haug and Megan Ohai on the Second Team and Alyssa Dávila with honorable mention along with Sandoval. Eddy was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. ON THE CLIMB In spite of interruptions from injuries, USC redshirt senior Ashli Sandoval has already locked in on the USC career leader boards. As she enters her final season with the Trojans, the 2007 NCAA Champion is following up her call-up to the Mexican National Team s summer training camp with one last push to the top of the lists at Troy. Sandoval has a hold with the No. 4 all-time mark in career assists (23), No. 8 in career game-winning goals (5), No. 10 in career points (51) and No. 10 in career goals (14). Sandoval was recently joined on the game-winning goal board by junior Courtney Garcia, who tallied her fifth game-winner in USC s overtime win at Purdue last weekend. Meanwhile, making a push to join Sandoval on the assists ladder is senior Brittany Kerridge, whose two assists over the weekend give her a career count of 10 to date. BACK ON THE ATTACK Five of USC s top seven scorers in 2010 were either freshmen or sophomores. That sure-footed unit returns for 2011, along with leading scorer Ashli Sandoval, who provided six goals in 2010 after being sidelined in 2009 with an ACL injury. As freshmen, Autumn Altamirano, Haley Boysen and Elizabeth Eddy accounted for a third of USC s goal-scoring in Now sophomores with some extra savvy, that trio combines forces with Sandoval, senior Ashley Freyer and juniors Courtney Garcia and Samantha Johnson as the Trojans bring back seven of their top eight scorers. Thirteen different Women of Troy got to the back of the net to tally 39 goals in Now, six games into 2011, three of those 2010 scorers are already on the board, as Boysen, Eddy, Freyer and Garcia have all scored to date, while Brittany Kerridge has blasted to the front of the pack with a career season even in the early goings, boasting three goals and four assists so far. SOMETHING NEW Three Trojan newcomers have already made their marks on the offensive end this season. Transfers Kristina Noriega and Erica Vangsness have each scored a goal apiece, and true freshman Jessica Musmanno has served up an assist for the Trojans. Noriega and Musmanno have both appeared in the starting lineup as well, with Noriega a full-time starter on the back line, and Musmanno holding two starts up front for the Trojans. A DECADE IN USC head coach Ali Khosroshahin just finished up his 10th season of collegiate head coaching. It s a milestone that he admits came faster than he expected, but there s no doubt that he has squeezed a lot of shining moments into his first decade. In his four seasons at the helm of the Women of Troy, he s continued his streak of NCAA appearances (2005 and 2006 at Cal
