2 1. League Format 1.0 Registration is open to both public and independent secondary schools. 1.1 The season will typically run from early April to the end of May. 1.2 Leagues will consist of a minimum of 4 teams (expansion to be reviewed on a yearly basis). 1.3 League schedules consist of 5-6 regular season games (plus play-offs). 1.4 Games and practices will occur in municipal arenas. 1.5 Game and practice times will occur after school (3:00pm 5:00pm). 1.6 Rosters are open to students in grades Canadian Ball Hockey Association rules are in effect (i.e. no deliberate contact). 1.8 Registration includes insurance, floor time, and certified officials 1.9 At least 1 (one) School sponsor (i.e. teacher, support staff, admin) must be present at all games/practices Community volunteers are permitted to coach and assist teams. However, all community volunteers should submit a criminal records check. 2. Equipment MANDATORY EQUIPMENT No Exceptions! 2.0 Only CSA approved hockey helmets are permitted. 2.1 Full facial protection for all student athletes (CSA approved - no lacrosse or cats-eye masks allowed). 2.2 Soft shin pads or CBHA approved D-Gel pads. 2.3 Hard/plastic shin pads must be covered. 2.4 CSA approved hockey gloves or CBHA approved Zebra D-Gel type gloves. 2.5 Running shoes only (goalies may wear shoes with toe and instep protection). 2.6 Each school team requires a set of jerseys or t-shirts with numbers. 2.7 Protective athletic cup. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT: 2.8 Elbow pads. 2.9 Mouth guards Knee pads (basketball or volleyball style). Pg. 2

3 3. Game Format 3.0 Each game will be 1 hour and 15 minutes in length consisting of: 5 minute warm up; 2 (18 minute) stop time periods with a 5 minute intermission. 3.1 Due to time constraints, we are restricted to 1 hour and 15 minutes only. Please be ready to play on time. Teams who are not ready to play after the 5 minute warm up will receive a 2 minute delay of game penalty. After 10 minutes, the game will be forfeited. 3.2 A team must have a minimum of 8 players and 1 goalie by the end of the first half or the game will be forfeited. 3.3 There is no overtime in regular season play. A tie ends in one point for each team. During play-offs, there will be a 5 minute overtime period followed by a shoot-out. To begin the shootout, each team will select and alternate 3 players. If there is not a winner after the first round of 3 players, then each team will alternate 1 player at time until there is a winner. The visiting team shoots first. Players may only shoot once. 3.4 Each team is allowed 1 (30 second) time-out per period. 3.5 In the event that 2 teams are tied in the standings at the completion of league play, the following will be used in order to break that tie; 1) Team with the most wins 2) Team with the least goals against 3) Team with the least penalty minutes 4) Team with the most goals for 4. Basic Rules 4.0 Played 6 on 6 (similar to ice hockey; 5 players + 1 goalie) 4.1 Floating blue-line is used (i.e. when the offensive team gains the zone by crossing the opposition s blue-line, the offensive zone expands to centre, allowing more wide open play, and thus the defending team must clear the centre-line in order to force the offensive team out. This resets the blue-line to its original position. 4.2 Automatic icing (center line) is used to reduce the potential for injuries. 4.3 It is mandatory that all student athletes wear full facial protection both on the floor and on the bench at all times. 4.4 All participating leagues within High School Ball Hockey BC is considered to be an extension of the classroom. No violence or unsportsmanlike behaviour will be tolerated. Coaches are expected to closely monitor and address the behaviour of their student athletes Pg. 3

4 4.5 Fighting will result in an automatic league ejection (with the possibility of further school discipline). 4.6 The team coach/school will be responsible to compensate the municipalities for any damage caused to the facility by their team. 4.7 Coaching staff or players using foul language will receive a minor penalty. 4.8 Any player that receives 3 penalties will receive a game ejection on the 3 rd penalty. 4.9 Deliberate checking from behind will result in a 5 minute major, a game ejection, and a 3 game suspension. A second infraction will result in a league suspension Accidental high-stick that makes contact with a player is an automatic 4 minute penalty. If the high stick causes the player to bleed, a 5 minute major and a game misconduct will be assessed Intentional high-stick will result in match penalty (5 game suspension) and further discipline could be pending Any Head Shots or contact to a player s head (i.e. punching, slapping, elbowing, cross checking) will result in an automatic game ejection and further discipline could be pending A minor penalty will be given out to players who are not properly equipped The Home team is required to change jerseys in the event of a colour conflict. If the home team does not have an alternate set of jerseys, then pinnies will be permitted The Home Team is required to provide a time/scorekeeper for the game The Home team is required to send the scoresheet upon completion of the game to the league convenyor All decisions by the discipline committee (DC) are final. 5.
