10 Season Preview All-American Jay Borschel All-American Daniel Dennis Big Ten Champion & All-American Dan Erekson All-American Phillip Keddy Despite bringing home the last two NCAA and Big Ten team titles and riding a 38 dual-match winning streak, the veteran-laden University of Iowa wrestling team is looking for more. More individual champions, more all- Americans, 10 NCAA qualifiers and larger margins of victory. Those are just a few of the things the Hawkeyes will be striving for this season. Iowa returns seven NCAA qualifiers, five all- Americans and two Big Ten champions from the squad that went 24-0 in dual competition and won the school s 22nd Big Ten and 33rd NCAA team titles. Seniors Daniel Dennis (133), Brent Metcalf (149), Ryan Morningstar (165), Jay Borschel (174), Phillip Keddy (184), Chad Beatty (197) and Dan Erekson (Hwt.) all return after qualifying for the 2009 NCAA meet. Dennis, Metcalf, Morningstar, Keddy and Erekson earned all-america honors. Borschel and senior Joe Slaton (141) earned all-america honors in 2008, while senior Dan LeClere (141) qualified for the 2008 national championships. That much successful experience returning will help the Hawkeyes in their run for a thirdstraight NCAA and Big Ten titles. But, Iowa needs to replace graduated seniors at 125 and 141, as well as see improvement at 157 in order to achieve a dominant lineup. With the addition of 10 newcomers, Iowa s practice room will have the extra depth needed to prepare underclassmen for the lineup. Iowa natives Dylan Carew (Tiffin), Tyler Clark (Bettendorf), Tomas Lira (Nichols), Trayvonius Pendleton (Waterloo), Derek St. John (Parnell) and Nick Trizzino (Bettendorf) will be joined by Joe DuCharme (Pagosa Springs, CO), Ethen Lofthouse (Avon, UT), Tony Ramos (Carol Stream, IL), and Phillip Sheridan (La Jara, CO). The group has a combined total of 14 individual state titles. Clark will redshirt this season after transferring from Iowa State, where he was a two-year starter and NCAA qualifier at 125 pounds. Lofthouse and Trizzino have family ties to the Iowa wrestling program. Lofthouse is the nephew of Hawkeye junior Luke Lofthouse. Trizzino s father, Mark, was an all-american and four-time letterwinner ( ) at Iowa, while his uncle, Scott, was a three-time all-american and four-time letterwinner ( ) for the Hawkeyes. Iowa will open the season Nov. 14 at the Harold Nichols Open in Ames. The Hawkeyes are set to host seven contests in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, starting with the Iowa City Duals on Nov. 20. Iowa will face Coe, Cornell College, Iowa Lakes, North Carolina-Pembroke and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in a three-mat format starting at 11 a.m. Iowa is also scheduled to host Northern Iowa (Dec. 10) and Oklahoma State (Jan. 16) in non-conference duals, and will face Big Ten foes in Penn State (Jan. 29), Michigan State (Jan. 31), Northwestern (Feb. 12) and 2009 NCAA runner-up Ohio State (Feb. 19) in Iowa City. Iowa s non-conference road schedule includes a trip east to face Bucknell and Rutgers on Nov. 27, a trip to Ames to face Iowa State Dec. 6 and a trip out west to face Utah Valley Feb. 6 in Keddy s hometown of Vernal, UT. The Hawkeyes will also try to defend their team titles at the annual Midlands Championships (Dec ) in Evanston, IL, and the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls (Jan. 9-10). Iowa s Big Ten dual road schedule includes meets at Michigan (Jan. 22), Purdue (Jan. 24), Minnesota (Feb. 14) and Wisconsin (Feb. 21). Michigan will host the Big Ten Championships Mar. 6-7 in Ann Arbor, and the NCAA Championships are set for Mar at the Qwest Center in Omaha, NE. Here is a weight-by-weight breakdown of the squad: 125 Pounds Gone is four-year starter Charlie Falck, making this Iowa s most inexperienced weight class. Falck was a two-time all-american who started 72 duals and posted a career record of at Iowa. Sophomore J.J. Krutsinger is the front runner to replace him. The Evansdale, IA, native started five duals last season while Falck was injured and brings an 8-5 career mark to the mat. Redshirt freshman Matt McDonough from Marion, IA, will be the top contender. He posted a 22-8 record during his redshirt campaign. Ramos and Trizzino will provide depth, while Clark will redshirt. 133 Pounds Dennis returns after a solid junior season at 133. Going into post-season competition, he held a 25-2 overall record with a 20-2 mark in dual competition and an unblemished 8-0 dual mark in Big Ten competition. The Ingleside, IL, native ended the season with a 31-6 record, earning all-america honors with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships and placing fifth at the Big Ten meet. Redshirt freshmen Mark Ballweg, Nate Moore, McDonough and Trizzino will provide depth. Ballweg, from Waverly, IA, went 15-8 at 141 during his freshman campaign, while Moore, a native of Iowa City, posted a 23-4 mark while wrestling unattached last season. 10

11 Season Preview 141 Pounds The hole left by Iowa s other four-year starter - Alex Tsirtsis - is at 141. Tsirtsis earned all- America honors in 2006, was a four-time Big Ten placewinner and posted a career record of This hole won t take long to fill as two seniors - Joe Slaton and Dan LeClere - are vying for the spot. Slaton, from Cedar Rapids, IA, was the 2008 NCAA runner-up at 133 pounds, posting a 31-5 record that season. LeClere, from Coggon, IA, qualified for the 2008 NCAA Championships at 141 and finished the season with a record. Both wrestlers found themselves outside the lineup last year with the emergence of Dennis and the return of Tsirtsis from a redshirt year. Slaton went 17-1 last season, winning his last 12 matches, while competing at several tournaments. LeClere posted a 7-1 mark. Sophomores Montell Marion and Tyler Halverson, Mark Ballweg and Sheridan will provide depth. Marion, from Des Moines, IA, went 10-3 last season. 149 Pounds Metcalf returns for his senior campaign. The two-time all-american and Big Ten champion from Davison, MI, had a disappointing end to the season with a loss in the NCAA finals that snapped his 69-match winning streak. He has a 72-2 career record at Iowa and a long list of awards, including the 2008 Dan Hodge Trophy, 2008 Jesse Owens Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year and the first wrestler in Big Ten history to earn outstanding wrestler honors at the conference meet two consecutive years. He won the 2008 NCAA 149-pound title and was named outstanding wrestler at the meet. Sophomores Stew Gillmor and Ethan Sebert, redshirt freshman Jeret Chiri and Carew will provide depth. 157 Pounds Junior Matt Ballweg has the most varsity experience at this weight class, starting all 24 duals last season. The Waverly, IA, native posted an record, going 9-15 in dual competition. Juniors Aaron Janssen, Jake Kerr and Brooks Kopsa, Chiri, Gillmor and St. John will provide depth. Janssen went 6-2 at 165 last season, while Kerr posted a 4-2 record at 165 and Pounds Morningstar returns after earning his first all- America honor last season after moving up from 157 pounds. The three-time Big Ten placewinner and NCAA qualifier has started the last 65 straight duals for the Hawkeyes and brings an career record to his senior campaign. The Lisbon, IA, native made things exciting for Hawkeye fans down the stretch last year as seven of his nine post-season bouts went into overtime. He will be backed up by senior Michael Fahrer, Kerr, Janssen and DuCharme. 174 Pounds Borschel is back for his senior season with a career record. He earned all-america honors in 2008 and placed third at the last two Big Ten meets. A native of Marion, IA, he went 19-1 in dual matches and 6-0 in Big Ten duals last season. Redshirt freshman Grant Gambrall, Lira and Ethen Lofthouse will also compete here. Gambrall went 18-5 while competing unattached last season. 184 Pounds Keddy is a two-time all-american and threeyear starter for Iowa with a career record at 184. Last season, he placed second at the Big Ten Championships and fourth at the NCAA meet, going 34-5 in overall matches, 23-1 in dual competition and 7-1 in Big Ten duals. Sophomore Vinnie Wagner, Gambrall and Lira will provide depth. 197 Pounds Beatty, from Wilton, IA, bulked up and fought off injuries to have a solid 19-6 season last year, going 7-1 in Big Ten duals. His gutsy fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships earned him an automatic bid to the national meet. Senior Rick Loera, junior Luke Lofthouse and sophomore Brodie Ambrose each wrestled in dual competition when Beatty was injured, so all three will provide solid back up. Loera has spent the last three seasons filling in at 184 and 197 pounds, posting a career mark.
