Jimmy Howard earned his second shutout in IIHF Men s World Championship play Wednesday vs. Italy. Howard s other shutout came on May 3, 202, with 8 saves in a 5-0 decision over Finland in the preliminary round in Helsinki... Nick Schmaltz, who was knocked out of Monday s game vs. Sweden less than a minute into the game on a blindside hit by Sweden s Gabriel Landeskog and did not play vs. Italy on Wednesday, is back in the lineup today... USA Hockey Media Officer: Dave Fischer davef@usahockey.org Cell: TODAY S GAME The U.S. Men s National Team faces Latvia today (live on NHL Network in U.S.) in its fifth preliminary round game of the 207 International Ice Hockey Federation Men s World Championship at LANXESS Arena in Cologne, Germany. The U.S. and Latvia are currently tied for third place in the Group A standings, one point behind Sweden and two points behind group-leading Russia. LARKIN TOP POINT-GETTER FOR TEAM USA Dylan Larkin is Team USA s leading point-getter heading into play today with Only three other players have more than seven points in the tournament. Larkin s seven assists lead the world championship. He is the only U.S. player with at least one point in each of the first four games. STARTING IN GOAL Jimmy Howard will start in goal today vs. Latvia. He has played in three of the first four games in the tournament. Howard made nine saves in a 3-0 shutout of Italy on Wednesday (May 0). He also had 39 stops in a -3 win over Sweden on Monday night (May 8). Howard played in Team USA s opening game of the tournament against Germany on Friday (May 5) faced 27 shots with 25 saves. Howard is making his second appearance in the IIHF Men s World Championship. In 202, he went 5-2 with a 2.2 goals against average and.9 save percentage and was named one of Team USA s best three players of the tournament. Howard led the U.S. to a gold medal at the 2002 IIHF U8 Men s World Championship and a fourth place finish in the 2003 IIHF World Junior Championship. Keller was Team USA s top point getter (3-8--) and second in the tournament as the U.S. won the gold medal in the 207 IIHF World Junior Championship in Montreal and Toronto. Also involved are Dean Lombardi (USA Hockey) and Don Waddell, president of Gale Force Sports & Entertainment. The group is led by Jim Johannson, USA Hockey s assistant executive director of hockey operations. Chris Drury, assistant general manager for the New York Rangers, and Bill Guerin, assistant general manager for the Pittsburgh Penguins, are also part of the management group for the 207 U.S. Men s National Team. USA HOCKEY S NTDP ROOTS Fourteen members of the 207 U.S. Men s National Team were members of USA Hockey s National Team Development Program. The NTDP is an elite development program created by USA Hockey in 996 currently housed in the Detroit suburb of Plymouth, Michigan. THEY VE PLAYED THE MOST Eric Weinrich has played in nine IIHF Men s World Championships, the most of any U.S. player in history. Mark Johnson, from the famous Miracle on Ice team and the current women s ice hockey coach at the University of Wisconsin, is second with eight appearances. Tim Thomas has played in seven men s world championships, while Derek Plante, Darby Hendrickson, Phil Housley, and Joe Sacco have all played in six. WOMEN S NATIONAL TEAM ANNOUNCED USA Hockey unveiled the 23 players that will makeup the U.S. Women s National Team last Friday (May 5). The team will live and train together in the Tampa, Florida, area beginning in September for the fivemonth period in advance of the 208 Olympic Winter Games. Florida Hospital Ice Center in the Tampa suburb of Wesley Chapel is the host rink for Team USA. BITS AND PIECES FROM PREVIOUS GAME NOTES Bob Webster is in his fifth decade of service to U.S. national teams. This year marks his 3th straight as team leader for the U.S. Men s National Team. Webster has also served as Team USA s equipment manager for 5 previous world championships (979, 82, 86, 87, 89-96, )... Oddly, the U.S. is the home team in its first four games of the preliminary round and the visiting team the last three games... The last concert Jack Eichel attended was Maroon 5 in Buffalo this past March... U.S. captain Connor Murphy and alternate captain Brock Nelson are playing in their fourth straight world championship. The last U.S. player to play in four straight world championships was Nashville Predators forward Craig Smith, who did so from 20-. Murphy and Nelson are among nine players in U.S. history to play in four or more straight world championships. The others are Eric Weinrich (6 straight; ); Darby Hendrickson (6 straight, ); Adam Hall (5 straight; ); Steve Jensen ( straight, ), Jack Johnson ( straight, ), Mark Johnson ( straight, ), and Buzz Schneider ( straight, 97-77)... His interaction with USA Hockey dates back to 982 when he was the U.S. host for a exhibition game between Germany and the U.S. Haake, the head men s ice hockey coach of the Lithuanian national team, was also Team USA s host for the 200 IIHF Men s World Championship here in Cologne... In January, the U.S. National Junior Team won gold at the 207 IIHF World Junior Championship with a thrilling 5- shootout victory over Canada in Montreal. Just over a week later, the U.S. Women s National Under-8 Team scored a late goahead goal to earn a 3- victory over Canada in the gold-medal game at the IIHF Under-8 Women s World Championship. Last month, the U.S. Women s National Team became the first to win a gold medal on home ice with a 3-2 overtime win over Canada in the IIHF Women s World Championship gold-medal game at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. Later in April, the U.S. Men s National Under-8 Team went a perfect 7-0 en route to its record 0th gold medal at the IIHF Under-8 Men s World Championship. 206 Men s World Championship A Look Back The 206 U.S. Men s National Team finished fourth among 6 teams at the IIHF Men s World Championship in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia. Team USA (3---5, W-OTW-OTL-L) fell to Russia, 7-2, in the bronze-medal game. The U.S. has finished in the top four of the world championship in three of the last four years, a stretch that has only been equaled once in American history (93-3). Dylan Larkin and Auston Matthews led all U.S. skaters with nine points.
