USA Hockey Media Officer: Dave Fischer davef@usahockey.org Cell: TONIGHT S GAME The U.S. Men s National Team faces Sweden tonight (live on NHL Network in U.S.) in the third preliminary round game for both teams of the 7 International Ice Hockey Federation Men s World Championship at LANXESS Arena in Cologne, Germany. STARTING IN GOAL Jimmy Howard is back in the net tonight for the U.S. Howard played the opening game of the tournament against Germany on Friday (May 5) and stopped 5-of-7 shots. Howard is making his second appearance in the IIHF Men s World Championship. In, he went 5- with a.4 goals against average and.9 save percentage and was named one of Team USA s best three players of the tournament. Howard led the U.S. to a gold medal at the IIHF U8 Men s World Championship and a fourth place finish in the 3 IIHF World Junior Championship. ALL-TIME vs. SWEDEN The United States and Sweden meet for the 53rd time in World Championship history. Sweden leads the series by a (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) count. The last time the two teams met was in the world championship where Sweden gained a 6- win in the preliminary round. Team USA s last win over the Swedes came on May 8, 5, by a 5- count in the qualification round. The U.S. looks to end a four-game series losing streak against Sweden here tonight. KELLER HAT TRICK Clayton Keller, the youngest player in the world championship, had a hat trick yesterday in helping the U.S. to a 7- win over Denmark. Keller was Team USA s top point getter (3-8- -) and second in the tournament as the U.S. won the gold medal in the 7 IIHF World Junior Championship in Montreal and Toronto. Murphy is playing in the world championship for the fourth straight season. Forwards Brock Nelson (4th straight world championship) and Dylan Larkin (3rd straight world championship) are the team s alternate captains. MEN S WORLDS EXPERIENCE Thirteen players have experience playing in the IIHF Men s World Championship. Blashill, who recently completed his second season as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, previously served as goaltending coach for the 9 U.S. National Junior Team, as well as an assistant coach for the 9 U.S. Junior Select Team and 6 U.S. Under-8 Select Team. Jack Capuano, Rand Pecknold and Seth Appert are serving as assistant coaches of the 7 U.S. Men s National Team. MANAGEMENT TEAM The 7 U.S. Men s National Team is under the direction of the U.S. Men s National Team Advisory Group, including NHL general managers Stan Bowman (Chicago), David Poile (Nashville), Ray Shero (New Jersey) and Dale Tallon (Florida). Also involved are Dean Lombardi (USA Hockey) and Don Waddell, president of Gale Force Sports & Entertainment. The group is led by Jim Johannson, USA Hockey s assistant executive director of hockey operations. Chris Drury, assistant general manager for the New York Rangers, and Bill Guerin, assistant general manager for the Pittsburgh Penguins, are also part of the management group for the 7 U.S. Men s National Team. JUNIOR CONNECTION Nineteen members of the 7 U.S. Men s National Team are alums of either the United States Hockey League or the North American Hockey League, the only Tier I and Tier II junior hockey leagues in the U.S., respectively. USA HOCKEY S NTDP ROOTS Thirteen members of the 7 U.S. Men s National Team were members of USA Hockey s National Team Development Program. The NTDP is an elite development program created by USA Hockey in 996 currently housed in the Detroit suburb of Plymouth, Michigan. BITS AND PIECES FROM PREVIOUS GAME NOTES U.S. captain Connor Murphy and alternate captain Brock Nelson are playing in their fourth straight world championship. The last U.S. player to play in four straight world championships was Nashville Predators forward Craig Smith, who did so from -4. Murphy is one of only nine players in U.S. history to play in four or more straight world championships. The others are Eric Weinrich (6 straight; 997-); Darby Hendrickson (6 straight, 996-); Adam Hall (5 straight; 3-7); Steve Jensen (4 straight, ), Jack Johnson (4 straight, 9- ), Mark Johnson (4 straight, 978-8), and Buzz Schneider (4 straight, )... Forwards Anders Lee and Brock Nelson, both who play for the New York Islanders, are roommates here at the world championship. During the 6-7 season, their lockers were next to each other with the Islanders and here at the world championship their lockers are also side-by-side... Bernie Haake is Team USA s host for the world championship. His interaction with USA Hockey dates back to 98 when he was the U.S. host for a exhibition game between Germany and the U.S. Haake, the head men s ice hockey coach of the Lithuanian national team, was also Team USA s host for the IIHF Men s World Championship here in Cologne... The U.S. played Italy in an exhibition game on Tuesday (May ) in Milan and skated to a 5- victory. Thirteen different players contributed points. THEY VE PLAYED THE MOST Eric Weinrich has played in nine IIHF Men s World Championships, the most of any U.S. player in history. Mark Johnson, from the famous Miracle on Ice team and the current women s ice hockey coach at the University of Wisconsin, is second with eight appearances. Tim Thomas has played in seven men s world championships, while Derek Plante, Darby Hendrickson, Phil Housley, and Joe Sacco have all played in six.
