Beaupre and Ryan Hancock. From Montreal, Beaupre s full-time job is as plant manager at Numest in Laval, Quebec, a city just outside of Montreal. Hancock is a risk manager in Toronto. The duo has been instrumental in helping the U.S. have a seamless experience to date at the IIHF World Junior Championship. Both have been embedded with Team USA since its arrival in Montreal on Dec. 4 and will be with the team through the end of the tournament. Team USA Game Notes 5 IIHF World Junior Championship Montreal Bell Centre Team USA (---) vs. Canada (---) Dec., 4 4 p.m. ET Preliminary Round Game #4 USA Hockey Communications Contact: Dave Fischer davef@usahockey.org Cell: TODAY S GAME The United States faces Canada today at Bell Centre (capacity:,87) in the final preliminary-round game for both teams at the 5 IIHF World Junior Championship. On the line is the top seed in Group A. The teams have played nine previous times on New Year s Eve. Canada has won six times, all but one by a single goal. The two U.S. wins came by 5- and 7- counts in 998 and 98 and there has been one tie. This will be the first New Year s Eve meeting between the two teams in Montreal. CANADA The U.S. has a (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) record against Canada all-time in the IIHF World Junior Championship. Canada has won eight of the last games in the series. Six of the last games have been decided by a single goal with three having gone to overtime (two of those to a shootout). See series breakdown later in these notes. IN GOAL TODAY Thatcher Demko returns to the net today for the United States. He has played in two of Team USA s three games to date, with a - shootout victory over Finland on Dec. 6 (8 saves) and a - shutout of Slovakia on Dec. 9 (7 saves). In the tournament, he has a.46 goals against average and a.977 save percentage. Demko has a tribute to U.S gold medal goaltenders Jack McCartan (96 U.S. Olympic Team) and Jim Craig (98 U.S. Olympic Team) on the back of his mask. Brandon Halverson, who stopped all 4 shots in a 6- win over Germany on Dec. 8, will serve as the back-up. BITS AND PIECES Team USA has allowed just one goal in its first three games, the fewest the U.S. has ever yielded in the first three games of the IIHF World Junior Championship. The next fewest is three in the first three games of the event (bronze medal)... The U.S. looks to win its first four games of the tournament for the fourth time (, 8, 4). In addition, the U.S. was unbeaten after its first four contests in 997 with three wins and one tie... Team USA will play its quarterfinal game in Montreal on Jan.. If the # seed in Group A, the U.S. will play at 5 p.m., and if the # seed it will play at p.m.... Team USA s focus has been on rest and recovery headed into the Canada game. The U.S. had a short practice yesterday and a brief video session. The players/staff also had some time to spend with family and filmed a quick Happy New Year wish to fans... Team USA s motto is US and materials remind players/staff of the mantra through utilizing Team USa and/or USa... The U.S. has three jerseys for the tournament. A blue and white version of the jersey worn by Team USA at the 4 Olympic Winter Games and also a white replica from the 96 gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic men s ice hockey team.

2 THINGS Jack Eichel, Sonny Milano and Alex Tuch each have 4 shots on goal through the first three games to lead Team USA in that category. Dylan Larkin, who is the team s leading point getter with ---5, is not far behind with shots on goal, while Auston Matthews has... The U.S. has two shutouts to its credit to date in the tournament. Team USA has also had two shutouts in three previous tournaments (, 4, 997). The U.S. has never had three shutouts in a single tournament... Jack Eichel and Auston Matthews are roommates here in Montreal... Fourteen of the U.S. forwards/defenseman have recorded at least one point through the first three games of the tournament.. Steven Santini, who has been with Team USA here in Montreal, will return to Boston to be with his Boston College teammates tomorrow. TIDBITS FROM PAST GAME NOTES Team USA s average age is 8 years, months. Last year s team was, on average, 9 years, months old... HAP on the masks of goaltenders Alex Nedeljkovic and Brandon Halverson stands for Have A Purpose... Alex Tuch and Ian McCoshen are roommates at Boston College, while Dylan Larkin and Zach Werenski are roommates at the University of Michigan... Members of Team USA give Dylan Larkin the nod as the best sewer ball player in the group... Head Coach Mark Osiecki s wife Robin and daughter Emily (7) and son Jake (4) are here in Montreal. Osiecki s father, Tom, is also here. Tom spent more than 4 years coaching hockey at various levels in the state of Minnesota, including 4 seasons as the head coach of Burnsville High School, where he led the team to two state titles... Assistant Coach Don Granato s sister, Cammi Granato, is here in Montreal. Cammi is married to Ray Ferraro, who is the lead analyst on TSN s broadcasts of the IIHF World Junior Championship... Nina Maria Fite, the U.S. consul general in Montreal, joined Team USA for lunch on Dec. 7. Scott Bocksel, assistant attaché for U.S. immigration and customs enforcement, and his wife Maria accompanied Fite. Fite, who grew up a fan of the Philadelphia Flyers, spoke briefly to the players and staff and welcomed them to Montreal. She was presented a USA Hockey wimple by Jack Eichel, captain of Team USA, who thanked her for taking the time to stop by and meet the team... Mike Richter, a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame and one of the finest netminders in the country s history, visited the U.S. lockerroom following Team USA s - shootout victory over Finland on Dec. 6. Richter helped the U.S. win the 996 World Cup of Hockey Game Notes vs. Canada Dec., 4 Page and was named the tournament s MVP. He also led the New York Rangers to the 994 Stanley Cup... JT Compher was the lone player of the that dressed in all three pre-tournament games (Butcher, Carlo, Collins, Compher, DeAngelo, De Leo, Hanifin, Motte, Schmaltz, Wood) to have at least one point in every game. Compher, who is an alternate captain at the University of Michigan, had a goal in each game... The U.S. scored goals in its three pre-tournament games (6.67/game)... Team USA went to the movie Unbroken on Christmas afternoon... Perhaps the most popular gifts among the players during the team s gift exchange on Christmas Eve were a Lululemon gift card and a USA hat... A number of players and staff, including Head Coach Mark Osiecki and team captain Jack Eichel, attended mass at St. Patrick s Basilica on Christmas Eve. The team was treated to front-pew seating and a warm round of applause from the more than, people attending the service when welcomed by Msgr. Francis John Coyle at the beginning of mass. PRE-TOURNAMENT RECAP The United States began a journey with players vying for a spot on the 5 U.S. National Junior Team the night of Dec. 5 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in the Boston area with a team meeting. The U.S. had a camp at Boston University from Dec. 6-9 that culminated with a 5- victory over BU in a pre-tournament game at Walter Brown Arena on Dec. 9. The team had a dinner at Fenway Park the night of Dec. 8 at which Mike Eruzione, captain of the gold medal-winning 98 U.S. Olympic Team, spoke to the group. The U.S. then moved to Kingston, Ontario, on Dec. where it continued preparation for the IIHF World Junior Championship through noon on Dec. 4. The time in Kingston included pre-tournament games against Germany on Dec. (5- win) and Sweden on Dec. (-5 win). Team USA arrived in Montreal the afternoon of Dec. 4. LEADERSHIP TEAM Jack Eichel is serving as captain of Team USA and is the youngest captain of a U.S. National Junior Team since Bryan Berard (/5/77) in 996. Will Butcher and John Hayden are the alternate captains. A year ago, Eichel helped Team USA capture the gold medal at the 4 IIHF Men s Under-8 World Championship in Lappeenranta, Finland. He contributed five goals and five assists. Butcher and Hayden were teammates on the U.S. squad that earned the silver medal at the IIHF Men s Under-8 World Championship in Sochi, Russia. HEAD COACH MARK OSIECKI Mark Osiecki is serving as head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team for the first time. A three-time assistant coach for the U.S. National Junior Team, Osiecki helped Team USA capture gold medals in and, plus a bronze medal in. Osiecki has had a variety of U.S. coaching positions. In, he was head coach of the U.S. Under-8 Select Team that placed second at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. He led the U.S. Junior Select Team to a first-place finish at the 999 Freedom Challenge. He was an assistant coach for the 999 U.S. Under-8 Select Team that finished second at the Ivan Hlinka Tournament. Osiecki also served as video coordinator for the 6 U.S. Men s National Team at the IIHF Men s World Championship. Currently, Osiecki is in his second season as an associate coach for the American Hockey League s Rockford IceHogs. From -, Osiecki was head coach of the Ohio State University men s ice hockey team. He served as an assistant coach for the University of Wisconsin men s ice hockey team from 4-, helping the Badgers to the 6 NCAA national title and the NCAA national championship game. From 997-4, Osiecki was the general manager and head coach of the United States Hockey League s Green Bay Gamblers. The Gamblers won four straight division titles (999-) and captured the Clark Cup in. Osiecki was named the USHL Coach of the Year in 999. The former University of Wisconsin defensemen (987-9) served as an alternate captain for the 99 NCAA national championship team. He played two seasons in the National Hockey League (99-99) with the Calgary Flames, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets and the Minnesota North Stars. He also competed for the U.S. at the 99 IIHF Men s World Championship in Prague.

They are listed below with stats from the tournament in parentheses. Team USA has reached the gold medal game in six consecutive tournaments, claiming gold five times. Seven players on the 5 U.S. National Junior Team helped Team USA to the gold medal at the 4 IIHF Under-8 Men s World Championship, including Ryan Collins, Jack Eichel, Dylan Larkin, Auston Matthews, Sonny Milano, Alex Nedeljkovic and Alex Tuch. Eight players were silver medalists at the IIHF Under-8 Men s World Championship, including Will Butcher, JT Compher, Thatcher Demko, Jack Eichel, Hudson Fasching, John Hayden, Anthony Louis and Tyler Motte. Additionally, Will Butcher and JT Compher were members of the U.S. team that won gold at the IIHF Under-8 Men s World Championship. NTDP CONNECTION Fifteen of the players on the 5 U.S. National Junior Team roster were or are members of USA Hockey s National Team Development Program. FAMILY TIES A number of U.S. players have family roots in college and/or professional hockey. - Will Butcher s dad, Joe, skated for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. - Ryan Collins dad, Dan, played for Connecticut College. Ryan s uncle, Jim Warner, played at Colorado College and in the NHL. - Tyler Motte s brother, C.J., skated for Ferris State University. - Nick Schmaltz s brother, Jordan, also plays at the University of North Dakota and was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in. - Miles Wood s father, Randy, played seasons in the NHL, while Miles uncle skated at Boston University. Head Coach Mark Osiecki and Assistant Coach Don Granato played together for Burnsville (Minn.) High School beginning at age where the pair helped the Braves to a Minnesota State High School League hockey championship; went on to play junior hockey together for the Madison Capitols; and helped the University of Wisconsin win the NCAA men s ice hockey national championship in 99. BANTAM TEAMMATES The 5 U.S. National Junior Team includes three players that were teammates on the Westchester Express Bantam team in Brewster, New York, during the 7-8 season. The group includes John Hayden, Anthony DeAngelo and Sonny Milano. In addition, Steven Santini, who likely would have made the U.S. National Junior Team this year had he been healthy, also played on that squad. Santini s father, who owns the Brewster Ice Arena (which he built in 998), coached the squad to a third-place finish at the USA Hockey National Championships that year. Butcher played in the Madison Capitols organization at the rink Suter owned in Middleton, Wisconsin, just outside Madison, from the third grade until he went to USA Hockey s National Team Development Program in. Butcher s father, Joe, who coached him growing up, was good friends with Suter and Will had regular interaction with Bob Suter and the entire Suter family. Butcher s brother, Mike, is currently member of the Madison Capitols U6 Midget Minor Team coached by Bob s son Garrett. Bob Suter passed away unexpectedly this past September 9 at the age of 57. Suter lived by the motto, It s all about the kids. WINNING A BYLSMA STICK U.S. forward Chase De Leo won the stick of Dan Bylsma in a raffle when he was playing for his first-ever hockey team -- the Norwalk Knights in Norwalk, California. De Leo grew up attending Anaheim Ducks game, where Bylsma played from -4. The stick still hangs in De Leo s bedroom today. Bylsma is providing color commentary on the NHL Network s Team USA broadcasts in the 5 IIHF World Junior Championship.
