2 Pitt Wrestling Notes Notes Continued Winning On Their Feet One thing is clear so far this season, when the Panthers win individual matches, they do it from the neutral position. Pitt won 13 of the 20 individual bouts in its victories over Lehigh and Drexel. In those 13 wins, the Panthers have posted a 36-7 advantage in takedowns, totaling a edge in points scored from neutral. Shelton Mack and Anthony Zanetta have been dominant on their feet in their two dual wins apiece. Mack has yet to be taken down in dual competition, outscoring his opponents 22-0 from neutral. Zanetta has been nearly as flawless, outscoring his opponents 16-2 on his feet. Galloway Wins Title At East Stroudsburg Erik Galloway won the title at the East Stroudsburg Open on Saturday, Nov. 12, posting a 4-0 record in the 133-pound bracket. The sophomore from State College, Pa. was impressive in his first competition of the season, recording a technical fall over Anthony Abidin (Nassau) in the finals. He also had a pin in the opening round and a 13-0 major decision in the semifinals. Ronnie Garbinsky also had a good showing at East Stroudsburg, recording a runner-up finish with a 3-1 record. The Panther newcomer registered three straight wins, including a 12-8 win over Bryan Pearsall (Penn State) in the semifinals, before falling to Luke Frey (Penn State) in the championship match. Garbinsky improved to 7-3 on the season and placed in his second consecutive tournament. He finished seventh at the Buffalo Open on Sunday, Nov. 6. Nauman Moves Up Pitt Wins List Tyler Nauman is 10th on Pitt s all-time wins list with a career record of The redshirt senior entered the season in 13th with 110, but with six wins this year he has passed Mike Zisko (111), Chad Jesko (111) and J.J. Fasnacht (114). With a win against Michigan, he would tie Scott Hovan (117) for ninth all-time. Nauman also moved into a tie for third in all-time pins, matching Justin Nestor s total of 35 with a fall in his first match of the season. He is five pins away from tying Ryan Tomei for second. Redshirt senior Ethan Headlee is ninth on the list with 26. Three Pitt Wrestlers Win Titles At Buffalo Open Three Pitt wrestlers opened the season by winning titles at the Buffalo Open. Anthony Zanetta, Tyler Nauman and Zac Thomusseit all placed first, while another five Panthers finished as runner-up. Zanetta rolled to the title at 125 pounds, outscoring his four opponents The junior opened the tournament with a pair of 23-6 technical falls before advancing to the finals with a 4-2 win over Caleb Richardson. He wrapped up a perfect 4-0 day with a 6-2 win over third-seeded Korey Mines (Edinboro) in the championship match. Nauman, ranked third in the nation at 149, won his bracket with a 10-3 win over second-seeded Kyle Rosser (Lehigh). The senior s only close match of the day came in the semifinals where he edged Edinboro s David Habat 6-5. Prior to that, he had pinned Korey Gillen (Lock Haven) in the first period and posted a 12-3 major decision over Josh Micek (Buffalo). Thomusseit wrestled unattached and went 3-0 to win his first competition at heavyweight. A returning national qualifier at 197, Thomusseit proved he can have success moving up a weight as he was in control the entire tournament. After easy 8-1 and 7-0 wins in his first two matches, he topped Ernest James, a returning starter for Edinboro, 3-2 in the finals. Pitt had wrestlers in seven of the 10 championship matches. Shelton Mack (133), Donnie Tasser (157), P.J. Tasser (174), Andy Vaughan (184) and Matt Wilps (197) all came up one match short with second-place showings. In all, Pitt had 12 wrestlers place in the tournament. Rounding out the Panther place-winners were freshman Travis Shaffer (4th at 141), freshman Nick Bonaccorsi (5th at 174), senior Zach Grove (7th at 133), freshman Ronnie Garbinsky (7th at 141) and senior Victor Konno (7th at 157). Four-time National Qualifiers In the nearly 100-year history of Pitt wrestling, only 12 wrestlers have qualified for nationals in all four of the seasons with the Panthers. Included in that list is head coach Rande Stottlemyer ( ) and assistant coach Matt Kocher ( ). That number may increase to 14 at the end of this season as both Tyler Nauman and Ethan Headlee entered the season as threetime national qualifiers. Double Trouble This season, the Panthers roster features three sets of brothers, including Donnie and P.J. Tasser, Max and Zac Thomusseit, and Matt and Tyler Wilps. Tough Schedule Pitt s non-conference schedule includes four teams ranked in the top 11 in the country in the preseason, including No. 2 Penn State, No. 6 Lehigh, No. 8 Michigan and No. 11 Ohio State. The Panthers schedule also includes a conference matchup with No. 24 Edinboro. Welcome to the Hall of Fame Pitt Head Coach Rande Stottlemyer was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on April 18, Stottlemyer received a Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award. A week later, Stottlemyer was inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Ringing in the Championship The wrestling team and staff were honored at Heinz Field during the Pitt football game against Utah on Oct. 15 for winning the EWL regular season and tournament titles. Each member received a championship ring. The team now has captured three EWL titles (2 regular season, 1 tournament) in the past two seasons.

5 Pitt Wrestling Notes Coaches/Roster RANDE STOTTLEMYER Head Coach University of Pittsburgh, 1992 Record at Pitt: (32nd season) Career Record: (32nd season) Thirty-one years at the helm of one of the most history-rich wrestling programs in the East is no small accomplishment. Pitt s head wrestling coach, Rande Stottlemyer, has done it the old-fashioned way: through dedication and commitment to one s principles and beliefs and a good day of hard work. Stottlemyer was able to see rewards of that hard work the past two seasons as Pitt captured back-to-back Eastern Wrestling League regular-season titles and its first-ever EWL Tournament title (2011). In each of the past two seasons, the Panthers have posted perfect 6-0 records against conference opponents. In 2011, Stottlemyer was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame by the Pennsylvania Chapter as he earned the Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award. In addition, he was also inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Pitt s all-time winningest coach with 281 victories in 32 seasons, Stottlemyer still enjoys what he does and gets just as much of a thrill in seeing his team succeed as he did in taking the job back in His excitement and enthusiasm for a sport he has been a part of for over 30 years is contagious as he talks about his coaching duties with the Panthers. Coaching at the University of Pittsburgh has given me an opportunity to work with great young men and outstanding assistants, Stottlemyer said. It has also given me an opportunity to help student-athletes build character and acquire tools they will need in the future. During his tenure, Stottlemyer and his staff have produced a two-time national champion in Pat Santoro, one-time national champion in Keith Gavin, 20 NCAA All-Americans, 143 national qualifiers and 42 Eastern Wrestling League Champions. In 20 of the last 27 years of his career, they have coached at least one NCAA All-American. Pitt has finished in the nation s top-25 in seven of the last 14 seasons. Stottlemyer s strong ties and success in the sport of wrestling date back to his high school career at Hickory High School in nearby Hermitage, Pa., where he was a PIAA state runner-up and two-time Junior National Freestyle wrestling champion. Following a stellar scholastic career at Hickory, Stottlemyer enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh, where he became a three-time NCAA All-American, achieving that level of distinction only one year before becoming a full-time assistant coach to then Panther wrestling coach Dave Adams.
