Tusco Long Riders Territorial Governor For years our SASS Territorial Governor has been DJ McDraw. DJ has recently decided to step away from his home club the Ohio Valley Vigilantes and as our TG at Tusco. I would like to express my heartfelt thank you to DJ McDraw for his years of service as our Territorial Governor at Tusco! Best wishes to you! After long discussions with our club officers it became very apparent who our next appointed Territorial Governor should be. It is with the greatest respect that I announce Stone Creek Drifter as the new Territorial Governor of the Tusco Long Riders! Drifter has been a fixture at Tusco for many, many years and rarely misses a match. His knowledge of the rules and his attendance at the "Big" matches were large factors in deciding who our next TG would be. He is also highly respected throughout the country and will represent Tusco very well! Again, please pass along a big Thank You to DJ McDraw and join me in welcoming Stone Creek Drifter as Tusco's TG. 4 P a g e

SASS REGULATORS DESCRIPTION Regulators are those folks who work above and beyond the call of duty for the benefit of SASS and their affiliated club(s). 6 Prairie Dawg's "A-List" Movies Famous Sidekicks You've Seen Over And Over -- Part II Last month, I profiled 5 outstanding Western Films Character Actors... Dub Taylor, Slim Pickens, Chill Wills, Walter Brennan, & Jack Elam This month, I'll look at 5 more. We've seen these guys in Western after Western after Western. We've enjoyed the roles they have taken on, and they made their roles so believable, that they melted into the fabric of the film. I could do this for months, as there are so many wonderful character actors. Want to see a Wonderful Web Video about Western Stars & Character Actors??? Go Here: Strother Martin - Born March 26, 1919, in Kokomo, Indiana, Martin became a champion diver at the University of Michigan while he worked toward a theatre arts degree. After Navy service in WWII, he moved to Hollywood in 1948 with his first acting job as a leprechaun on a KTLA-TV children s show. His first film was a bit in The Asphalt Jungle (1950) after which he began to work steadily in films and on TV, however his first western, Drum Beat, wasn t until 1954 and it really wasn t until 1956 that Martin began to appear primarily in westerns. 6 P a g e

Among others, he can be seen in The Black Whip ( 56), Black Patch ( 57), Cowboy ( 58), Wild and the Innocent ( 59), Horse Soldiers ( 59), Man Who Shot Liberty Valance ( 62), McLintock ( 63), Sons of Katie Elder ( 65), as well as dozens of TV episodes Zane Grey Theatre, Broken Arrow, Trackdown, Jefferson Drum, Texan, Rebel, Have Gun Will Travel, Rawhide, Legend of Jesse James, Big Valley, Dakotas and many others. In he was a regular as Aaron Donager, a townsman friend of Sundance (Earl Holliman) on Hotel de Paree was Martin s banner year. He was seen in True Grit", "The Wild Bunch and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, three classic westerns. Strother Martin died of a heart attack on August 1, 1980, in Thousand Oaks, CA. Memorable Quote by Strother Martin as Percy Garris in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: "Morons...I've got morons on my team." Woody Strode - Born in Los Angeles on July 25, Strode was a top-notch decathlete and a football star at UCLA. He became part of Hollywood lore after meeting director John Ford and becoming a part of the Ford "family," appearing in four Ford motion pictures. Strode also played the powerful gladiator who does battle with Kirk Douglas in Spartacus (1960)." Strode s association with the western began with the John Ford film Stagecoach (1939), in which he was an uncredited extra in a saloon scene. Twenty years later, Ford cast Strode as the title character in Sergeant Rutledge, the story of a black trooper in the legendary 9th Cavalry, whose members were known as the buffalo soldiers. Strode s identification as a western figure derives from his portrayal of this character. Revered by his fellow soldiers and heroic in nature and deed, the character of Sgt. Braxton Rutledge is the epitome of the classic western hero. Later, Strode costarred in secondary roles or small parts in the Ford Western films, Two Rode Together and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. During the 1960s, Strode costarred in westerns by other directors, including The Professionals, alongside Robert Ryan and Lee Marvin, as well as in television series such as Rawhide and Daniel Boone. At the end of the decade, Strode s performance in the famous opening sequence of Sergio Leone s Once Upon a Time in the West, alongside Jack Elam, more than solidified his identity as a western figure. Woody Strode died of lung cancer December 31, 1994 Memorable Quote by Woody Strode as 1st Sgt. Braxton Rutledge in Sergeant Rutledge: "A soldier can never think by his heart, ma'am. He got to think by the book." Hank Worden -- Norton Earl "Hank" Worden was born in Iowa on July 23, Hank was raised on a cattle ranch near Glendive, Montana and was educated at Stanford University and the University of Nevada as an engineer. He enlisted in the U.S. Army hoping to become an Army pilot, but washed out of flight school. An expert horseman, he toured the country in rodeos as a saddle bronc rider. During one ride, his horse landed atop him and broke his neck, but aside from a temporarily sore neck, Worden did not know of the break until x-rayed twenty years later. While appearing in a rodeo at Madison Square Garden in New York, he and fellow cowboy Tex Ritter were chosen to appear in the Broadway play Green Grow the Lilacs, the play from which the musical Oklahoma! was later derived. Tex Ritter soon became a star, and Worden played sidekick roles in a number of Ritter's Westerns. This cowboyturned-character-actor caught the eye of director Howard Hawks, who cast him in some roles and recommended him to director John Ford. 7 P a g e

Worden eventually became a member of the John Ford Stock Company, and was directed by Ford twelve times in films and television. The connection with Ford led to an association with actor John Wayne, and Worden appeared in 17 of Wayne's films. Foremost among his collaborations with Wayne and Ford is The Searchers, the 1956 classic Western in which Worden portrayed his most memorable role, that of "Mose Harper," the Shakespearean fool who only longed for "a roof over his head and a rocking chair by the fire." Worden's best performances were given for demanding directors. He had a striking appearance: tall, thin, bald, his voice and mannerisms unforgettable to anyone who saw him. He worked steadily in television as well as films, long outliving Hawks, Ford and Wayne. In good health through his 91st year, he died peacefully during a nap at his home in Los Angeles on December 6, Memorable Quote by Hank Worden: "Thank Ya, Thank Ya Kindly." Harry Carey Jr. -- Henry George "Dobe" Carey Jr. was born on May 16, 1921, in Santa Clarita, California, the son of actor Harry Carey ( ) and actress Olive Carey ( ). As a boy, he was nicknamed "Dobe", short for adobe, because of the color of his hair. He grew up on his parent's ranch in Santa Clarita, where they raised horses and cattle. His family ranch was later turned into a historic park by the Los Angeles County and was named Tesoro Adobe Park. He served with the United States Navy during World War II. He was a United States medial corpsman, who was assigned to work with John Ford on films for the U.S. Military. He married Marilyn Fix, who was the daughter of Paul Fix, the actor who was best known for portraying Marshal Micah Torrance in The Rifleman. Carey began acting in the John Ford Stock Company with his father. Carey collaborated frequently with director John Ford, who was a close friend. He became a respected character actor like his father. Carey appeared in many Westerns. He made many Western films with John Ford, Howard Hawks, and John Wayne. He made films, TV shows, and films for TV, like Last Stand At Saber River, with notable modern Western actor Tom Selleck. Carey has an active actor for about 60 years, starting in the 1940s and ending in the late 1990s with the previously mentioned Last Stand At Saber River. You may remember him as George Arthur in the 1980 movie The Long Riders, a film about the exploits of Jesse James. Or as Zeke, a saloon old-timer in the bar scene of the 1990 film Back To The Future, Part III. Carey is memorable as Marshal Fred White the 1993 classic Western Tombstone. Carey wrote an autobiography of his life titled Company of Heroes: My Life as an Actor in the John Ford Stock Company, that was published in It is a great read for any Western Films fan and contains lots of interesting information about John Ford and John Wayne -- I highly recommend it. Carey died of natural causes on December 27, 2012, in Santa Barbara at the age of 91. At the time of his death, he was the last living member of the John Ford Stock Company. Memorable Quote by Harry Carey Jr.: "I've worked with the great and the not-so-great. But mostly I've worked with men and women who loved their profession, and who like me, had kids to raise and houses to pay for. 8 P a g e

Andy Devine -- Andrew Vabre "Andy" Devine was born October 7, Andy Devine was a well-known character actor and comic cowboy sidekick known for his distinctive, whiny voice. It was first thought that his peculiar, wheezy voice would prevent him from working in modern films, "talkies", it became his trademark. He appeared in more than 400 films and shared, with Walter Brennan, the rare ability to move with ease from "B" Westerns to "A" pictures. Notable roles for him included playing Deputy Marshal Jingles P. Jones in both the radio and TV series The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok from , and ten films as sidekick "Cookie" to Roy Rogers. He made several appearances in films with John Wayne, including Stagecoach (1939), and as the frightened marshal Link Appleyard in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). John Ford picked him to play Buck, the stagecoach teamster, in Stagecoach (1939) because he had actual experience driving a six-horse team. Devine died of leukemia at the age of 71 in Orange, California in Actor Ken Curtis (Festus) sang at the funeral. John Wayne and James Stewart were among those who attended his funeral service. Memorable movie quote by Andy Devine (as Buck, in Stagecoach): "Luke Plummer and the Kid. There would be a lot more peace in this territory if that Luke Plummer had so many holes in him he couldn't hold his liquor." Send in those High Noon at Tusco Registration forms!
