1 Published Weekly, online at - Since 2007 March 5, 2019 Volume 13: Issue 10 In This Issue: The American Semifinals, pg 10 Junior American,, pg 20 The Patriot, pg 22 NBHA Dixie Super Show,pg 33 Lucky Dog, pg 37 Revolution Barrel Race, pg 41 Hailey Kinsel & DM Sissy Hayday Win Second RFD-Tv s The American Championship By Tanya Randall Hailey Kinsel and her incredible mare DM Sissy Hayday ( Sister ) have made three appearances at AT&T Stadium for RFD-Tv s The American. They ve never left without a check. It still seems crazy to me that s she won checks all three years and that s she s won it twice, said Kinsel, picked up $100,000 for the 2019 Championship. The first year, it was I can t believe we did this. Last year, I knew she liked it there and knew I could go win first or second. I was dang glad to win a check, any check, because any type of bonus in the winter is awesome. This year, I knew my horse liked it and knew the drill, a little bit more about how things worked, but that still makes you no more likely to win the deal. The Cotulla, Texas, barrel racer is one of the few to have experienced The American as both a Qualifier, having won a record $433,333 in 2017 when she split the $1 million bonus, and as an Invitee. Both she said are challenging. I know firsthand what it takes to get there from a Qualifiers standpoint, making several runs and going against some of best barrel racing horses just to get to AT&T Stadium, said the 2018 WPRA World Champion and current world standings leader. From the Invitee standpoint, which I experienced last year, it s not an easy route either. I learned really quickly how hard it is to get into the (WPRA) Top 15 and then get into the Top 10 once you get to the (NFR), so you can go to the American. Both sides are elite groups and it s very tough to get there, so I m thrilled just to get back. With The American a two-day event this year, the Top 10 from the WPRA after the NFR plus the Top 10 from the Semifinals ran in an open round on Saturday, March 2. The top eight competed again on Sunday, March 3 with the top four on a two-run aggregate advancing to the money round. Kinsel said the rodeo is definitely different with two-days of competition, advancement on an aggregate and making three runs two possibly for no money at all if you re an Invitee as the Semifinals paid the Top 10 advancing to AT&T Stadium. It s not just throw down two runs, it s throw down three runs, noted Kinsel. There are only so many times you can ask a horse to make killer runs. I talked to Kenneth Springer about that at Fort Worth. We were talking about the NFR and how you can t necessarily ask them for their lives 10 days in a row. That s a lot to ask. You focus on that day, but you also think, I ve got to come back tomorrow. With this deal, you have to look at it a little bit like that too. I m not going to throw down for two runs and then expect her Sun Frost PC Frenchmans Hayday Caseys Charm DM Sissy Hayday 2011 Palomino Mare Royal Shake Em si 104 Royal Sissy Irish Thats Sissy Baby si 84 Rider: Hailey Kinsel; Owner: Leslie & Hailey Kinsel; Breeder: Dillon Mundorf Doc s Jack Frost Prissy Cline Tiny Circus si 97 Casey s Ladylove Royal Quick Dash si 101 Shake Em Six si 97 Lazbuddie si 93 Pollylarks Hand to double down on the Final 4 run. I m not going to say I safety-ed up at all, but you keep that in mind. You set up your next run with each run you make. Although it might not appear like it to the audience, Kinsel did exactly that, saving the best run for last, I can tell you I asked her for a lot more on that last run than I did the first two. While the ground at The American was the best it has ever been, according to Kinsel, she and Sister did struggle with it, especially at the first barrel. However, the struggled more because of the position in draw running last on their first two runs and third on their last. When you have deeper footing with some give the elite horses will use every inch and following them has consequences. The first barrel was never our favorite there this year, she said. My first round, I didn t have the best angle going in. I was little wide. When she went to set, I hit someone else s ruts and she slid. Their was the fourth-fastest time in the long go. NFR qualifier Kylie Weast, who was riding the JL Dash Ta Heaven, Firewater Fanny stallion Heavenly Firewater ( Bud ), set the pace as the first gunner out with a The Matthews family offered Bud to The American Continued on Page 4

Jud Little Ranch Loses Bug In My Frosty Jud Little s homebred stallion Bug In My Frosty was laid to rest on February 28 after a bout with colic. He was 19. By WPRA World Champion Sire Sun Frost, Bug In My Frosty was out of the Bugs Alive In 75 mare Flyin Hi Babe. He was a halfbrother to champion performer Flyin Hi Firewater and champion sire BugEmForCash. He was one of the first homebred stallions for the leading barrel horse breeder from Springer, Oklahoma. After a brief arena career, Bug In My Frosty sired 52 money earners, according to Equi-Stat, with earnings of $455,833. His top performer was Marthas SixShooter, who won the BFA Juvenile with Jolene Montgomery and recently qualified for the Canadian Finals Rodeo with Angela Ganter. He also sired BFA Juvenile Reserve Champion Especially Frosted, LG Pro Classic BFA Futurity Champion My First Frosty and recent BFA Amateur Derby Champion Suspect Bugs. Bug In My Frosty also sired A Frosty Please, a pro rodeo winner with Mary Walker and Zoey Braman, as well as pro rodeo money earners Sign Of Frost, Bug De Gab, Fandango Frosty and Oh No Frosty. History is made at 2019 RFD-TV s The American, $2.35 Million Purse Awarded It s a cold night in Arlington, Texas but The American s newly crowned champions brought the heat inside AT&T Stadium. RFD- TV s 2019 The American Rodeo Finals concluded this evening after the event s sixth year. Putting up two million dollars in two days is very exciting for The American, and I want to thank our new champions for being great champions and showing future athletes how it s done. said Randy Bernard. History was made inside AT&T Stadium in more ways than one. In the bareback riding, Orin Larsen not only got his first $100,000 win at The American, but he did so while setting the new arena record with a 91-point ride. He finished first ahead of four-time world champion Kaycee Feild who earned 88 points in the shootout round. Tilden Hooper and Steven Dent finished third and fourth with points and 87 points respectively. The best part of The American every year is the athletes. said Bernard. To see how wholesome, appreciative and humble they are is special, and we need more athletes like them. When RFD-TV created The Junior American and added breakaway roping to The American in 2019, they didn t intend on having the same champion for both. Madison Outhier finished in the top two of The Junior American, earning her a spot at AT&T Stadium where she won the shootout round, earning her $110,000 for the weekend. The high school sophomore rode her home bred and trained horse to success with a time of 2.29 seconds, and expressed her gratitude for being able to compete in breakaway on a large stage. Finishing second and taking home $25,000 is the only other roper who received a time in the breakaway, Taylor Munsell. Jackie Crawford and Kelsie Chace also competed in the shootout round. Coleman Proctor celebrated with a smile and fist pump after he Tracy & Dusti Swan Hubbard, TX (Tracy) barrelracingreport@gmail.com Subscriptions: finished his run with partner Ryan Motes in the short go of the team roping. The team finished second behind Luke Brown and Paul Eaves, but their time of 4.24 in the shootout round made them the first champions to take their share of the million dollar payout. Although they are no strangers to success, each having qualified four times to the National Finals Rodeo, they qualified through the Semi-Finals and dominated over the invited teams. Brothers Brady and Riley Minor took second place in the shootout round with a time of Ty Erickson repeated his 2016 win at The American this year. His momentum from winning the short go of in 4.33 seconds carried him into the shootout round, where he ran down his steer and $100,000 with an even faster time of 4.20 seconds. The American s 2014 champion Hunter Cure finished second in both rounds and took home $25,000 with 4.30 second run. Stephen Culling, the only steer wrestler from the Semi-Finals, finished third with 4.61 and Scott Guenthner came in fourth. As Ryder Wright said while waiting for the final results of the saddle bronc shootout round, no matter the outcome, the win was coming back to Utah. The 2017 PRCA world champion was referring to whether he or his father Cody Wright, the last rider of the shootout round, would take the win. Ryder won the short go with a score of and came back to ride to a score of 88.5 in the shootout round, securing his win and $100,000. Second and third place both went to Semi-Finals qualifiers Jake Watson and Mitch Pollock. Fourth went to the exemption rider, Cody Wright, who rode his first bronc in 14 months in the long go. Ryle Smith won the short go of the tie down roping with an aggregate time of but fell short to Caleb Smidt in the shootout round. The 2018 PRCA world champion flanked and tied his calf in 6.97 seconds to win $100,000 and his first American championship. Although Rhen Richard fell short in the shootout round of the team roping just shortly before, he earned second place and $25,000 with a time of 7.35 in the tie down. With a 7.47 second run, Ty Harris took third place and Ryle Smith finished fourth. The third and final champion eligible for the million dollar payout came from the last event of the night, bull riding. Joao Ricardo Vieira qualified through the Semi-Finals and earned a score of 87 points. Qualifying in the bareback were Orin Larsen, Tilden Hooper, Kaycee Feild and Steven Dent. In breakaway roping was Kelcie Chace, Jackie Crawford, Madison Outhier and Taylor Munsell. In the Team Roping qualifiers included Luke Brown and Paul Eaves, Coleman Proctor and Ryan Motes, Aaron Tsinigine and Trey Yates, and Riley Minor and Brady Minor. Steer Wrestling qualifiers were Ty Erickson, Hunter Cure, Scott Guenthner and Stephen Culling. Qualifying in the Saddle Bronc was Ryder Wright, Jake Watson, Mitch Pollock and Cody Wright. Tie down roping qualifiers included Ryle Smith, Caleb Smidt, Rhen Richard and Ty Harris. Qualifying in Barrel racing were Craig Brooks, Hailey Kinsel, Kylie Weast and Amberleigh Moore. In the bull riding, three athletes qualified for the shootout round and these were Cody Teel, Joao Ricardo Vieria and Kaique Pacheco. Other Invitees advancing to the Round of Eight were defending American Champions Taci Bettis and Bogie Is A Smash, Amber Moore and CP Dark Moon ( Paige ), and Jessie Telford and Famous Cool Whip. Joining them were Qualifiers Craig Brooks on Grandiose Guy ( Mater ), Dona Kay Rule on High Valor and Sydni Blanchard on Famous Heartbreaker. In The Round of Eight, fallen barrels eliminated Telford and Blanchard, while Bettis and Rule just came up short on the two-run aggregate. Once again, Kinsel and Sister had a bobble at the first. We didn t get back into the arena on Sunday, so it wasn t like I could go back in and get her confidence up on the first barrel again, Kinsel explained. I just had to ask her to set and trust me. In the eight-man round, when I asked her to set, she overreached and sprung a shoe. At the same time Kinsel was frantically trying to find a farrier to tack the shoe back on, Sister s full sister, a bay filly, was being born at Royal Vista Southwest. Thankfully, Lee Olsen was in the stands and graciously forewent watching some of the rodeo to tack down the shoe. We were just going to pull the shoe off, tape it and go, but my friend had her farrier there in the stands, she said. He came down in his sports coat and tacked a shoe back on and missed part of the rodeo. Running slowest to fastest on the aggregate, Moore and Paige were out first but caught barrels. After displaying her unknown trick-riding skills to stay on Bud, the current IPRA World Champion Barrel Horse, Weast turned in the time to beat, a Kinsel and Sister were third out with the winning time of I still didn t have a great first barrel, but that was my best one, Kinsel said. I think it was a little bumpy because we d made two runs and the ground didn t hold for either of them. So, when I go back in for my third (run), I can t expect her to just go back in there and wrap it. She stood up and took care of herself. She may have been a tide bit wide around it but it was our fastest first barrel just because we didn t have ground trouble. She had to sweat out Brooks and Mater, who had the fastest aggregate on two runs. Unfortunately, they were too long, but still picked up $10,000 for third. Next up for Kinsel is Rodeo Houston. It s highly likely that the 8-year-old daughter of PC Frenchmans Hayday out of Royal Sissy The Rundown w/ Hailey Kinsel DM Sissy Hayday Sister 15 hh, 1150 lbs. bit: Combo headgear: Tiedown saddle: Martin Stingray saddle pad: Classic Equine Suede Top Zone leg gear: Classic Equine Legacy II shoeing: Aluminum rims feed: Purina Strategy hay: Coastal and some Alfalfa supplements: Platinum Performance conditioning-training regimen: Daily exercise sponsor: Platinum Performance, Classic Equine, Cinch, Purina, Bloomer, P&P Trailer Sales, Yeti, Agri-insurance, Cavender s, 12 Gauge Ranch Irish, by Royal Shake Em, will get a much deserved break afterward. If Houston goes well and I win some good checks there, she said, I ll get off of her. All of this is hectic. If I do make the Finals on her at Houston, I ll get off of her. If we need some more money, I may take her somewhere else. I m taking another horse to Kissimmee and most likely taking my black horse, TJ (Thunder Stones) to Austin. The extended breaks are something Kinsel has done with Sister since her career started. While many will stay on a winning horse until it stops, Kinsel tries to step off when Sister is still hot. She said it s a fine line to walk between staying on a winning horse and knowing that s its best to step off and save their runs. We have a lot of runs and a long year ahead, she said. There s a fine line, knowing you need to stay on a winning horse, but there s also times to be self-controlled, saying I ve made a lot of runs, lot of tough set ups, lot of tough ground, a lot of adrenalin runs where she s just throwing down. Even though she s fine, healthy and happy, there might be a twinge of soreness here and there. If there is something I don t know about, something she won t let me see, I don t want to aggravate it. I don t want to create a mental problem that comes from physical stress. I may be overly cautious. Mom and I talk about it all the time. 7 The American Continued From Page 4 Like if I need to take her to Austin, I will, but I ve run her there twice before and she s just done OK. It s not her favorite place so why push our luck and cause problems? If we make six runs at Houston, she s only got three days, but if she only makes three and we ve got two weeks until Austin, that s a whole different ball game. Whatever the reasoning, Kinsel and Sister continue to hit it out of the park. 10 Acey Pinkston & Laico Corona Top American Semifinals for $35K By Tanya Randall The third time was the charm for Acey Pinkston. After three years of trying to make it to RFD-Tv s The American, the 15-year-old Stephenville, Texas, barrel racer got her chance after a $35,044 American Semifinals Championship, aboard Laico Corona ( Maya ), at the Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth. My mom and I completed her our goal, said the daughter of Wade and Liz Pinkston. We started trying two years ago. We just had a hard time. I guess the third time is a charm! We went in there (thinking) be calm, stay smooth, have fun. You ve made it this far. You ve conquered that hump in the road. This is amazing! A huge blessing! The American Semifinals, held February 25-March 1, featured 215 barrel racers, who earned the right to compete through various Better Barrel Races-sanctioned qualifiers held throughout the country. Using a progressive format, each barrel racer had their first run on Monday morning with the top 35 advancing to one of four performances, held Wednesday through Friday. (With a tie for last hole, 36 actually advanced.) Competitors also had a second chance to make the performers through the Buy-Back Round. Jill Tanner and Credit Ta Fame, the recent San Angelo Rodeo Champions, topped the 100-head Buy-Back Round to advance to a performance along with two other competitors. New this year was the addition of the top two qualifiers from the Junior American, held at the Will Rogers Complex, also in Fort Worth. Before my first run first run, I put my music in and tried to tune everything out to keep my mind straight. She goes, Do you need to go jog? I said, No, Mom. I m good. She said, Are you sure? I m good I promise. She said, I don t know. Maybe I need to go jog? I m like, I think you need to! Pinkston and Maya, who qualified for the Semifinals through the Last Chance Qualifier at the Dinosaur Classic in Glen Rose, Texas, finished 12th on their first run with a , worth $1,664. We kind of went controlled to the first barrel, she said of her hard-running mare. We were trying to make a smooth, clean run. She kind of slipped on the second and got hung up on the third, but her speed made up for that. Pinkston was second out in the last performance, the second one held on Friday. She ran behind Kay Blandford and her homebred superstar KB Angel Ta Fame, who topped the Semifinal Long Round with a Sadly, Blandford was riding with a heavy heart after having her beloved toy poodle Romo go missing that morning at the RV park near Will Rogers, and she caught a barrel. Pinkston and Maya topped all the performances for a $33,410 check and chance at $1.1 million at The American. My mare went flying in there, said Pinkston. I had to bump at the first: Hey, the barrel s right here; we ve got turn! She was like, Oh, okay! She just smoked it, and I was like Oh dang! Here we go! Going to the second, she shortened up a little bit and I had to ride her through it. At the third, she lost her hind end a little there, but she sure did fire. I was just happy that second barrel stayed up! Unfortunately, nerves got the best of them in Arlington, and a wide first barrel cost them a chance at advancing to the next round. My mare got a little bit excited, she said. She was fresh. She acted like she d just been pulled up out of the pasture. I ve never been anywhere this big. She handled it pretty well. We kind of bounced off the wall at the first barrel. I wasn t too happy with The Rundown w/ Acey Pinkston Laico Corona Maya bit: It depends on the pen. Pinkston, a high school freshman, homeschooled through White Horse Christian Academy, partnered with Maya nearly four years ago. I bought her from Teena Beyers from Gonzales (Texas), said Pinkston. Bred by Cathi Carroll, Maya is by Streak Laico Bird, a son of Streakin Six who sired the great barrel horse Red Headed Jonsey and was the broodmare sire of two Old Fort Days Futurity Champions. She is out of Coronas Lil Snob, by Corona Cartel. I started running her my seventh-grade year. We were bouncing off the walls a little bit, so we needed to chill out and start making smooth and clean runs. Now we re getting together and making smoother, clean runs. We re just trying to make progress. Next up for Pinkston and Maya are their region high school rodeo finals, which will determine if they advance to the state finals in Abilene, Texas. We may go to a couple of things here and there just to stay sharp, she said, but otherwise, that s our main focus. The American Semi-Finals Continued on Page 16 BARREL RACING REPORT March 5,

22 $18,000 Payday for 19 Year Old Bristan Kennedy By Amy Wilson The Patriot is America s richest combined equine event and took place February 25th March 4th in Fort Worth, Texas. In the Patriot $20,000 added open 4D barrel race, the top 50 from each D advanced to the final shootout round. Bristan Kennedy, who is currently a sophomore at Weatherford College, ran a to place second in the American qualifier for the 2020 semi finals and that time rolled to the open long round to place fourth out of 1296 entered. They ran it slowest to fastest in the shoot out round, so there were three left after me, Kennedy said. She and Copies Famous Saint CiCi had ran a and had to anxiously wait to find out if it would hold for the win. I was a little nervous, but I guess it was in the good Lord s plan for us to end up winning that, she said. Kennedy and her 10 year old sorrel mare were consistently fast, making both runs with only 4 thousandths of a second difference. Here lately she s getting more solid, thank goodness. When she went in there and made the same run again and clocked about the same, I wasn t super surprised but I was really proud of the way she s been working and being so consistent lately, Kennedy said. Since she s only 19 years old, Kennedy also rolled her times to the $10,000 added Young Guns barrel race and won that which gave her an exemption to the 2020 RFD-TV s The American Semi Finals. In all, Kennedy won about $18,000 at the Patriot and is looking to spend it on something with long-term value. I have a couple options. I ve thought about buying a young [prospect] so I can start one. I m transferring to [Texas] Tech to rodeo for them, so I m looking for a place there so I thought about using it for a down payment, the Animal Science major explained. Kennedy, who is originally from Levelland, Texas, started running barrels when she was only 5 years old. For the most part, I get her out and exercise her everyday. played basketball and ran cross country and track, but because she wanted to rodeo, she quit playing those other sports her sophomore year. Rodeo has been my life since then. I ride and work and exercise horses everyday, she said. That love for rodeo led her to Weatherford College and this fall she ll transfer to Texas Tech. My family and I are super close, so me moving off to go to college was really crazy no one could believe it, she said. Although her journey with CiCi hasn t been an easy one, they re finding their groove now and recently won the college rodeos at Vernon and Odessa. It s probably the long hours and not giving up because it has been a long road. She s a handful, so we do our best to work hard everyday, even the days we don t feel like it, Kennedy admitted. She bought CiCi as a 7 year old. She had been started by Philip Kenyon, but hadn t been hauled much. Kennedy started hauling CiCi but said that she s accident prone and had to be off for a year after having surgery. Since then we ve come a long way. Really this year is when we ve started to be more consistent, she said. I ve always known she had the potential, it s just taken us awhile to get here. Kennedy is extremely proud of CiCi after the runs she made at the Patriot, She gives her whole heart I never have to doubt that. But, her personality outside of the arena doesn t always The Patriot Continued on Page 25 BARREL RACING REPORT March 5,

Since Kennedy and CiCi have found their winning combination, she s looking forward to fulfilling her dreams and goals, Of course I want to make The American. I just bought my [WPRA] permit so we want to get a feel for things this year, then make the circuit finals and the NFR one day. And she continues to appreciate those who have helped her get to this place. I m super thankful for the opportunities the Lord has blessed me with it wouldn t be possible without Him, my family, and Terra Bynum Gernentz. She s been my coach and the one who s gotten CICi and I to where we are now, Kennedy said. I have a tendency to worry and think too much, so she s always been the one to tell me, You ve worked so hard to get this far, don t try to make it happen, just let it happen when you re making your runs. 28 Victorious Outcome for Welsh & Victorious Firewater We caught up with Tasha Welsh to discuss her win in the Patriot Futurity with Victorious Firewater... BRR: Can you walk us through your two runs in the Patriot Futurity? Welsh: She s so fast but turns as soon as you ask. So I had to make sure I just rode her super square and all the way up into her turns. The first run she was bottom of the ground but she s very light on her feet so I knew she would be fine. Her second run she was a little more fired up! You have to let her run when she wants and we started from pretty far back. It s a really long alley so we where flying to first. I got her a little tight going in so she had to V it a little bit but never quit running and trying! Her second and third she smoked! BRR: I know you had said it was this horse s first futurity, how did that play into your preparation for the Patriot and your runs? What s next for you and Victorious Firewater? Welsh: She s only had a handful of competition runs so I took her to a barrel race Saturday and didn t get any exhibitions. 30 The Patriot Futurity Continued From Page 28 know how she handled just running in. She really gets her confidence from her rider so it probably was more for my confidence in her and to be brave enough to let her run to that first as hard as she wants! Next we go to the Elite! BRR: Tell us about your horse, where your horse came from, and what makes her such a winner. Welsh: I bought her sight unseen off the internet a little over a year ago. I loved her breeding. She was already going around the barrels. She was very challenging so it took me awhile to gain her trust. This fall she started really clocking! I think she s a winner because she is extremely fast and gritty! She never quits running and trying. She is super honest but you have to be very light handed and stay off her face. BRR: Does your horse have any special humorous quirks? Welsh: I m not sure if it s humorous but she does this Lipizzaner lope. She usually does it down the alley so when she starts you have to just let her go! BRR: How did you end up barrel racing and what do you love about the sport? Welsh: I fell in love with barrel racing really young. No one in my family rides horses but I started and they could never get me off. I did lots of disciplines but wanted to go fast! I love it because it challenges me everyday! I also love the horses! They become a part of you! BRR: Do you have a role model in barrel racing? Who is it and why do you look up to them? Welsh: Oh gosh that s hard! There is so many great horsemen/women. For different reasons I look up to them. So it s hard to pick just one! The Patriot Futurity Feb , 2019, Ft.
