Box 486 Prince Frederick, MD or FAX: H HORSE FUN DAY DATE: May 11, 2013 TIME: 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Volunteers there by 9:00) LOCATION: Kings Landing Park Equestrian Center, Huntingtown, MD This is a 4-H Fun Day for those with horses or not. Some classes are tailored for nonhorse riders/owners. This is a GREAT way to engage in fun horse activities while honing knowledge and skills that you can use when filling in your record books. Participation: Open to any 4-H er in the 5 Southern Counties Classes for riders and non-riders at all levels FREE Classes for riders include activities for individual riders and teams 4-Hers without horses will have classes that include first crafting your own stick horse and then using that stick horse for riding simulations, other crafts and games Cloverbuds will be doing Horseless Horse activities only No horse contact. Prizes Register by completing the attached entry from and necessary documents and return them to the Calvert County 4-H office, c/o Franki Coughlin, P.O. Box 486, Prince Frederick, MD no later than Friday, May 3, If bringing a horse, please return a copy of your current negative Coggins paperwork and completed Self certification Form in your registration packet. In addition, ALL attendees must complete a Liability Waiver Form and submit it with their registration materials. 2 4-H Horse Fun Day hosted by Calvert County 4-H HORSE/RIDER CLASSES: INDIVIDUAL: 1. Treasure Hunt: Challenges riders independently to maneuver, mount, dismount etc. Riders follow clues to bring in items. Rider with most items in a given timeframe wins. 2. Follow The Leader: Reinforces basic horsemanship. Requires a pattern using poles, cones, hay bales, tires etc. No competition, just fun. 3. Simon Says: Teaches listening and encourages balancing. No material requirements. Win through elimination. 4. Egg & Spoons: Teaches quiet hands. Goal is to ride at different gaits and not dropping the egg. Win through elimination. 5. Ride A Buck: Helps rider maintain close contact with horse and a deep seat. Riding bareback at different gaits, last one with the buck (fake) wins. 6. Ribbon Race: Teaches ability to direct and control a horse while coordinating with a partner. Partners carry a ribbon together at different gates. Last team holding ribbon wins. 7. Musical Stalls: Like musical chairs except that riders must get into a stall fashioned out of poles, cones etc when music stops. 8. Musical Mount: Riders line up straight line. When music stops, they follow directions (dismount from either side, mount). Last one doing it right wins. 9. Tortoise & Hare: Improves riding skills. Riders go from start to finish lines at requested gaits. Win via elimination during gait changes etc. 10. Red/Green Light: Teaches riders to start, halt, maintain a halt, and walk/trot in a straight line. Riders respond to commands. Win by crossing the finish line first doing everything correctly. 11. Saddle Up Race: Teaches responsible saddling techniques. First correctly saddled horse wins. No materials other than the rider s saddle. If needed, a handler can hold each horse. 12. No Hands Pattern (for intermediate riders or beginners on lead line): Helps the use of leg aids and balance. Riders follow a pattern without touching their bridles (legs and seat commands only). Win by finishing without using hands. 13. Tennis Tournament: Helps to quiet and steady hands. Riders start and finish at walk (and maybe trot) maintaining a tennis ball on a racket. Need to ensure that horses aren t afraid of dropping balls or the rackets. Win through elimination. 14. Side Saddle Advanced riders or on lead lines): Riders learn balance, control and confidence by riding sidesaddle. Win by crossing finish line first. 15. Barrel Race: Timed event around 3 barrels in standard rodeo pattern. Can be run at specified gaits depending on skill sets. Winner has fastest time. 16. Pole Bending: Timed event around 6 poles in standard rodeo pattern. Can be run at specified gaits depending on skill sets. Winner has fastest time. 17. Plug Race: Timed event around 1 barrel placed 180 feet away from the start line. Can be run at specified gaits depending on skill sets. Winner has fastest time. 18. Obstacle Course Race: Timed event around multiple obstacles in a pattern. Can be run at specified gaits depending on skill sets. Winner has fastest time.
3 TEAMS: 19. Boots in Bucket: Improves reining ability. Team relay. Teams ride to a designated area, grab a shoe or boot, race to another designated area with a bucket, drop the boot/shoe into the bucket, turn around, return to start line and tag next teammate.. If boot is dropped, rider must dismount, pick it up and continue on. Team wins by last person on team crossing start line. 20. Catalog Race: Teaches speed, mounting/dismounting, teamwork, and awareness. Riders race to a designated place with old magazines etc. They are each given a page to pull out of their magazine. They dismount, find and tear out page, and remount to return to next teammate. Teams win by returning first with correct pages. 21. Potato Race: Teaches control of horse and rider s body. Teams relay by racing to something holding potatoes, grabbing one, racing to another spot and dropping potato in a bucket. Then returning and tagging next teammate. Team wins when all have successfully put potatoes in bucket and returned to start line. 22. Water Race: Promotes quiet hands, seat, and good balance. Teams carry cups of water to a designated bucket. Can be done at different gaits. Team wins by finishing and having the most water in their bucket. Requires paper cups, water, and buckets. 23. Pony Express: Promotes teamwork and efficiency. Teams run in relays with a letter. Each team lines up in specific spots in a straight line. The first member hands the letter to the second and so on. Winning team gets to the end of the line & delivers mail in shortest time. 24. Stick Relay: Promotes teamwork and fun. Teams work a pattern, handing a stick off to each other. Team who finishes earliest wins. 25. Stew Relay: Promotes coordination, balance, dexterity and teamwork. Teams work in relays, taking ingredients out of a basket and taking them to a pot, returning to tag the next teammate in line. The winning team finishes making the stew and all getting back to the start line in the shortest amount of time. Dropping an ingredient requires dismount and remount. 26. Flag Race: Aids in reining, balance, and agility. Each rider races to a barrel holding bucket of flags and then races to deposit flag into another barrel with bucket and return to start line. Individual winner has fastest time. Can be tailored for walk only or any gait. CLASSES FOR THOSE WITHOUT HORSES: 27. Craft Class: Build a stick horse, making it any kind of breed and identifying it by name, breed, and age 28. Follow the Leader: Riding stick horse reinforces basic horsemanship. Requires a pattern using poles, cones, hay bales, tires etc. No competition, just fun. 29. Egg and Spoon: Riding stick horse, teaches quiet hands. Goal is to ride at different gaits and not dropping the egg. Win through elimination. 30. Teaches different parts of riding equipment. 40: Brush a Real Horse: Learn how to brush and groom properly. 41: 2 person team 3 legged race: Just a fun, no stick horse game 42: Horse Trailer Ride: Kids ride in horse trailer briefly and then describe how it feels to their horses when we stop, brake, back-up etc. Learn how we should drive to make our horses comfortable. In connection with and consideration of my child s participation in the Program, I, on behalf of my child and myself, my heirs, personal representative(s) and assigns, hereby represent and agree as follows: 1. I am aware that any program related activity can be dangerous, and I fully recognize and understand that there are risks and hazards, both minor and serious, associated with participation in the Program and related activities, including, but not limited to: cuts, scrapes, bruises, broken bones, muscle strains, pulls or tears, head, neck, back, eye and other bodily injuries, heat prostration, brain damage, blindness, deafness, drowning, heart attacks, paralysis and, even, death. 2. I understand that my child is not in any way required to participate in the Program, but I want them to participate, despite the possible dangers and despite this Release. 3. I represent and warrant that my child has no physical, health related or other problems which would preclude or restrict their participation in the Program or otherwise render their participation dangerous or harmful to them or others. I hereby release to the Maryland 4-H Youth Development Program all rights to exhibit this work publicly or privately, including posting it on the Maryland 4-H Website.
