Page 4 Pro Set he Pro set, sometimes called split backs as well, was an incredibly popular offense for close to 40 years in the NFL, and is still used quite a bit. Originally, it was constructed as a running offense that would use playactionfakes to get over top of the defense, but it has been successfully used in modern times to run the West Coast Offense a ball control passing offense. he pro set is characterized by it s balance, and it s ability to get the ball to any of the area of the field very quickly, and this is done by splitting the fullback and halfback, lining them up parallel, behind the 3 and 4 holes. he quarterback lines up behind center, who has his guards and tackles lined up on both sides. his formations versatility makes it equally effective with three receivers or three tight ends and all the other variants in between feel free to adjust plays to reflect your best personnel. RG: Drive blocks strong side D to the weak side. R: Drive blocks strong side DE to the outside. LE: Pulls right to block LG s man. RE: Seals strong side OB to the outside. SB: Motions into backfield, faking a sweep. Blocks weak side OB if he penetrates, or, seals off backside. : Lead blocks strong side for B. B: akes crossover step right, heads downfield aiming for RG s outside leg, following s lead block. QB: Reverse pivots left, fakes handoff to SB, hands off to B and bootlegs out. B his is a great short yardage, or goal line play. With the high number of blockers at the POA, the defense will be forced to collapse middle after you run this play effectively a couple of times that s when you switch it up, and hand off to the SB for the end around sweep! Coaching ips Without a good block from the, this play will fall apart in the backfield. he RG and R will create a small gap, but the has to smash through and clear it up for the B. he should break straight for the hole on the hike, with the SB sweeping in right behind him, then followed by the B. iming is key!
Page 7 Pro Right 26 Counter rap FS SS E N E Y E L: Pulls strong side, turns to block downfield at first hole in the line. LG: Pulls strong side, blocks strong side DE. C: Seals off back side gap. RG: Seals off N to the weak side. R: Releases inside to block strong side. Y: Releases downfield to block FS. : Releases downfield to block SS. E: Blocks strong side D to the inside. : Replaces L, blocking any backside penetration. B: akes one counter step weak side, before cutting back to receive the handoff from the QB. QB: Reverse pivots, hands off to B. B If your up against an aggressive defense, getting a jump on your B by reading your s lead blocks, throw them for a loop with this one. he defense will overpursuethe weak side, and the strong side DE and D will be forced to deal with the L and LG s lead blocks, as well as the B! Coaching ips he B s fake left has to be convincing. Make sure they don t rush it they should take their time, turn their shoulders downfield, plant, and explode back to the strong side. he L needs to be able to read the LG s block on the move, so that they know when they can safely turn downfield.
Page 8 Pro Slot Left 34 Blast FS SS E E Y E L: Seals off weak side D to the outside. LG: Releases inside to block weak side D outside. C: Blocks weak side D to the weak side, releases to. E: Releases inside to block strong side to the inside. : Rides with QB, runs up R s inside leg, blocks downfield. B: Slides right until QB is finished ride with, takes handoff from QB and follows s lead block. QB: Reverse pivots, extends handoff to, rides, extends handoff to B, rolls out. B Here we give the QB the option of handing off to either the, or the B. o makes the correct decision, he ll have to read the block of the R on the DE if he ignores the and heads for the B in the backfield, he should hand it off to the. If he commits inside to the, the QB should take the ball back and handoff to the B. Coaching ips he RG s block on the strong side D is crucial to the success of this play. If he can t get outside of him and force him back inside, he must sustain the block and drive him past the POA. If the doesn t get the ball, he should be looking to help out the RG, R, or E, in that order then he can go take care of the FS.

RG: Pulls weak side to block strong side to the backside. R: Releases downfield to block FS. X: Stalk blocks OB. Y: Stalk blocks SS. : Stalk blocks strong side. : Sprints out in front of B to lead block. First priority is cutting off the weak side and DE. If they re covered, he can take care of the weak side instead. B: Receives the pitch out left, following the before trying to beat the. QB: Pivots out, pitching the ball quickly before bootlegging away from the play. B Bringing out three receivers will force their defense to bring out an extra back in the secondary, leaving them vulnerable to the run. And when they re lined up trips on one side, the defense will be unbalanced. his quick toss is designed to force their to make a solo tackle on your B and if he can t, this will be a very big gain. Coaching ips For this play to be it s most effective, you ll need your C and RG to really get a move on. heir blocks on the Ms are what can change this play from a 5 yard solid gain to a 40 yard touchdown scamper. hat s why it s also imperative for the L and LG to seal their respective men inside at all costs if that DE gets outside of the L, this play will most likely end up a big loss.
Page 10 Jumbo Pro Right Reverse FS SS OB N OB E E L: akes one step right, before looping around to the. LG: Releases downfield to block weak side. C: Blocks N to the strong side. RE: Blocks strong side OB to the outside. : Sprints back towards the fullback, taking the handoff and running around the end. : akes the pitch from the QB, heads outside before handing off to coming back the other way. B: akes two quick steps right, then takes off to the weak side to lead block for. QB: Reverse pivots, pitching to the, then bootlegs around the other direction, lead blocking for. B ime to get fancy! his reverse is a great play when your up against an overaggressive defense that leaves their lanes prematurely. You need a receiver with good speed and a quarterback that can lay down a good block for this play to work well. ry it out after successfully running the 58 Quick oss a couple of times. Coaching ips Your QB s block on the weak side OB is vital to the success of this play. If you ve got a QB who shies away from most contact, you might want to try lining up both your Es on the left but this will bring more attention and defenders to that side. Don t wait until 3 rd and long to pull this out the defense will be weary of trickery. ry it out on 2 nd or 3 rd and short or even 1 st and 10!

Y: Runs a skinny slant, running right at the FS. :Runs a burst route. : Pass protects on the right side. B: Runs a flat route. QB: akes a 7 step drop, goes through progression. B If you re trying to get the ball downfield in a hurry, this is a great play to pull out. It s all based on the QB s read of the FS if he drops with Y, will be wide open coming deep over the middle, and if he doesn t, the QB can go over the top to Y for the massive gain. Coaching ips is running a special route here, called the burst. On a burst route, the receiver sprints straight ahead, before making a wide, speed, turn back to the inside at a depth of 20 yards. It s important the E doesn t get too deep on his curl, so that the gap between the s and secondary is as big as possible.
Page 13 Pro Right 55 ailback Option FS SS OB N OB Y E L: Fan blocks outside. LG: Fan blocks outside. C: Pass blocks man. RG: Fan blocks outside. R: Fan blocks outside. E: Runs a deep in route. Y: Runs an outside curl route. : Runs an outside curl route. : Looks to help in pass protection, slides out into flat. B: Looks to help in pass protection, runs a short option route on the weak side. QB: akes a five step drop, goes through progression. B his is one of the most versatile plays in the entire playbook. While there is no home run option, every receiver has a high percentage route where the QB can get them the ball easily. he QB should make his read from left to right, looking to hit the SE or B primarily. Coaching ips Fan blocking is basically man blocking, except the line is going to give up a step and funnel the defense to the outside, creating a deep pocket for the QB. he B should read the weak side s when deciding whether to run the curl or in route.
Page 14 PA Pro Big Right 8 B Protect SS E E LE RE L: Steps right, blocks man weak side. LG: Steps right, blocks man weak side. C: Steps right, blocks man weak side. RG: Steps right, blocks man weak side. R: Pass blocks man. LE: Blocks man for 1 count, runs in route behind s. RE: Runs a quick slant outside. : Runs a post route. : Sells power fake, blocks any defender in path. B: Blocks first man through the line on the strong side. QB: Fakes power to, plants feet, looks to hit in the endzone. Here s another great red zone play, with a very simple progression for your QB to follow. One of the best things about this play is that it can be run out of almost any formation with very slight adjustments. B Coaching ips While the play is being run for, if the LE sells his block well, after releasing to the inside, I ve found that the s are so concerned about the RE s slant and the playaction that the LE can find a soft spot in the end zone.
Page 15 Pro Right 88 Inside Reads Curl FS SS OB N OB Y E L: Pass blocks man. LG: Fan blocks, helping out on any outside penetration. C: Pass blocks man until RG gets there, slide over to weak side. RG: Slides over to block N. R: Pass blocks man. E: Runs streak route, makes read at SS. Y: Runs a streak with a double move at 15 yards. :Runs a streak with a double move at 15 yards. : Runs up RG s outside leg, curls in between Ms. HB: Runs up L s outside leg, makes read at OB. QB: akes a five step drop, goes through progression. B Here we give the B and E an opportunity to read the coverage and react accordingly. he Es read is based on whether the SS goes deep with the or stays with the E. If he goes deep, the E should cut inside, splitting the safeties, otherwise, he should continue his streak downfield. he B will either split out into the flat, or continue on a streak downfield as well. Coaching ips he idea here is to test the defenses ability to cover the deep ball. If they ve only committed two safeties deep, with four receivers running the streak, they ll be split, and your QB just has to make the right read. If they drop extra defenders back, your B and will be there for the underneath routes.
Page 16 PA Pro Big Left Boot Right hrowback FS E E E E L: Reach blocks man. LG: Reach blocks man. C: Reach blocks weakside D. RG: Reach blocks man. R: Reach blocks man. LE: Runs a deep in route. RE: Drop steps, running parallel to the line until he crosses to the strong side, then, gets deeper before running the swing route. : Motions right, getting a little bit of depth, turns downfield about five yards wide of the R, running a flag route. : Sells power fake, pass blocks on weakside. HB: Runs a flat route. QB: Fakes handoff to, bootlegs right, throws to RE. his play is at it s most effective when inside of your opponents five yard line, when the defense will be forced to defend run first and pass second. If the RE is covered, the QB has plenty of other options, ranging from in the back of the end zone, the HB in the flat, or even just taking off for the end zone himself. HB Coaching ips You need a pretty mobile E for this play to work well if it takes him too long to get into position, the QB will be left out on an island. he QB and RE will need to practice this play a lot. If the pass is thrown to early, the RE will not be ready for the pass, and too late, the defense will have had time to read and react.
