You are to decide which answer or answers are correct for NFHS and NCAA rules, which might vary. Note: In kicking situations, K is the kicking team, R the receiving team. (Answers appear on page 5) PlayPic 1. Team K s free kick is in flight 15 yards beyond team K s free-kick line. K1 catches the ball. a. Legal play; it s team K s ball at the spot of recovery. b. Legal play if no team R player is in position to catch the ball. c. Kick-catch interference on K1. 2. Fourth and three for team K from team R s 24 yardline. Holder K1, on one knee, takes the snap and puts the ball on the tee. Kicker K2 runs up as if to kick but bends down, scoops the ball off the tee and advances to team R s 15 yardline, where he is downed. After K2 grabbed the ball, K1 rose off his knee and blocked for K2. a. The ball is dead when K2 grabs it. b. The ball is dead when K1 rises off his knee. c. Legal play. 3. Fourth and 12 on team R s 39 yardline. K1 attempts a field goal from team R s 46 yardline. As the ball is about to go over the crossbar in flight, R9 leaps and bats the ball to the ground in front of the crossbar. The ball then rolls out of bounds in the end zone. a. Legal play; expect to see it on SportsCenter. b. The ball was dead when it was obvious the kick would not score; team R gets the ball on the touchback. c. That s a foul; team K scores a safety. d. That s a foul; team K can choose to replay the down. 4. Same as play 3, but after R9 bats it, the ball hits the ground in the end zone. a. The ball remains live despite the batting. b. The ball was dead when it was obvious the kick would not score; team R gets the ball on the touchback. c. If team R recovers, it s a touchback. d. If team R recovers, it s a safety. e. If team K recovers, it s a touchdown. f. If team K recovers, it s a safety. 5. Fourth and 10 with the nose of the ball touching team B s 20 yardline. A1 s pass is incomplete. The officials should: a. Move the ball, not the chains, so that the nose of the ball is on team B s 20 yardline. b. Move the chains, not the ball, so that the tail of the ball is touching team B s 20 yardline.

2 6. R1 catches a free kick and is advancing. He reaches team R s 30 yardline when he throws a forward pass in the direction of R2, who is at team R s 40 yardline. The pass is incomplete. a. The ball should be blown dead. b. The ball remains live. c. The play is treated as a fumble. d. The play is treated as an incomplete forward pass. e. Team R will begin a new series, second and 10 from its own 25 yardline. f. Team R will begin a new series, first and 10 from its own 25 yardline. 7. A1 takes the snap, steps back one stride and places the ball on the ground about a yard behind a guard. Right tackle A7 then loops behind the line, grabs the ball and runs for a touchdown. a. Legal play under all circumstances. b. Legal only if the referee was informed before the play. c. Foul; the penalty is 15 yards. d. Foul; the penalty is five yards. e. The penalty includes a loss of down. 9. With 1:33 left in the first quarter, R1 catches a free kick at his own seven yardline and makes a spectacular run. When R1 reaches team K s 20 yardline, there is no team K player within 15 yards of him. R1 turns and begins to run backwards toward team K s goalline while gesturing to his pursuers. As he nears the goalline, he turns again and dives across the goalline. b. R1 is guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct. c. If the penalty is accepted, it must be enforced on the free kick after the try. d. If the penalty is accepted, it must be enforced on the try. e. If the penalty is accepted, it may be enforced on the try or on the free kick after the try. f. If the penalty is accepted, the touchdown is canceled, it must be enforced from the previous spot and team K kicks again. 10. First and goal from team B s six yardline. The pylon is properly placed at team B s goalline. A1 s fumble deflects off the pylon and bounces back to team B s two yardline. a. The ball remains live. b. The ball is dead; it will be second and goal for team A from team B s two yardline. c. The ball is dead; it will be first and 10 for team B from its two yardline. d. The ball is dead; it will be first and 10 for team B from its 20 yardline. 11. Third and 13 from team A s 35 yardline. All team A players are set. While the quarterback is calling signals, defensive back B1, starting from a position eight yards behind his line of scrimmage, runs toward the neutral zone. B1 stops directly in front of tackle A1 but does not enter the neutral zone. In response to B1 s charge, A1 flinches. a. Both teams have fouled. b. A1 should be flagged for a false start. c. B1 should be flagged for delay of game.

3 12. K1 s free kick hits the ground at team R s 25 yardline. R1 goes to one knee to field the ball. a.
