The threeday meet, which begins on Thursday (Jan. 23) with the heptathlon and pentathlon, and con nues through Saturday (Jan. 25), will be held at the Cadet Field House Indoor Track. Admission is free for all three days. MEET INFORMATION The 24th-annual Air Force Invita onal will be held on Jan at the Academy s Cadet Field House Indoor Track. An early list of par cipa ng schools include Division I teams from Air Force, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Northern Colorado, UNLV and Wyoming, as well as non-division I teams from Colorado Mesa, Colorado School of Mines, CSU-Pueblo, Highlands, Metro State and Western State. MEN RANKED 16TH IN DUAL MEET RANKINGS Ranked 16th, the Falcon men made their debut on the Track and Field News Dual Meet Rankings, which were released on January 21. The weekly rankings take into account wins and losses, strength and depth of dual meet schedule, and strength and breadth of marks. A complete list of rankings can be found on page 3 of this release. EICHENBERGER BLASTS PAST FIELD IN 1000-METER RUN; EARNS AIR FORCE WEEKLY AWARD Anne e Eichenberger blasted by the field in the 1000-meter run at the Holiday Inn Invita onal, using an Academy-record 2:51.19 to cross the finish line over five seconds ahead of the nearest compe tor. Eichenberger s me, a personal best by seven seconds, sha ered the previous program standard of 2:54.62 that had stood since the Falcons 2011 meet at Nebraska. For her efforts, she was named the Air Force co-athlete of the Week. MEN DOMINATE THE DISTANCES Air Force won three of the four distance events contested on Jan. 17, while adding a runner-up finish in the remaining race. Zach Perkins won the 1000-meter run, while Patrick Corona and Isaiah Bragg finished first in the and 5000-meter races, respec vely. Charlie Perkins, who paced Air Force with a runner-up finish in the mile, was one of three addi onal top-four finishes for the Falcons in the distance events, joining Ma Dorsey (second, 1000 meters) and Elliot Myers (fourth, 3000 meters). MOVERS, SHAKERS AND RECORD BREAKERS In addi on to Anne e Eichenberger s record in the 1000-meter run, Air Force made two addi onal improvements to the program s top-10 and set one class record during the Jan meet in Nebraska. Taylor Smith cleared 6 10¾ to debut in fi h on the program s all- me list in the high jump, while Grant Hamilton accounted for the Academy s sixth-best shot put distance (56 4¾ ). With a distance of 39 11¼, Kassie Gurnell set the program s Senior Class Record in the triple jump, easily crushing the previous 24-year-old mark by nearly two feet. IN REMEMBRANCE The Falcons will be wearing black ribbons this season in honor of former teammate Capt David (Lissy) Lyon, who was killed in ac on in Afghanistan on December 27, Lyon, a three-year le erwinner as a thrower for the Air Force track and field team, was the 2008 Mountain West champion in the shot put. IT S ALL ABOUT CLASS With her triple jump mark of 39 11¼, Kassie Gurnell became the second member of the women s team to hold all four Class records outright. Gurnell, who easily broke the previous 1990 Senior Class record of 38 3 at Nebraska on Jan. 18, joined Sara Neubauer (shot put) as the only two Academy athletes to currently hold all four Class records outright. KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY Four members of the track and field team have connec ons to other Academy athletes. Anna Olesinski s brother Marek is a junior on the men s basketball team, while Lindy Long s sister Lainie is a junior on the diving team and the Perkins twins (Charlie and Zach) both run track and cross country. In addi on, Taylor Smith and Gavin Owens are just one year removed from having a sibling on the track and field team, as Travis Smith and Gage Owens both graduated in AIR FORCE LISTED IN NATIONAL RANKINGS The men s team is ranked 71st and the women are listed 110th in the USTFCCCA Preseason Rankings, which were released on Jan. 13. The men, listed third among Mountain West programs, have the highest ranking of the three service academies, while the women are the only service academy team to earn recogni on in the first na onal poll of the 2014 season. MARK YOUR CALENDARS Air Force made one change to its schedule for the current indoor season. The Falcons distance team will travel to Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Classic on Feb , instead of the Husky Classic in Washington. GOING HIGHER AND HIGHER With a winning clearance of 7 0½ at the Air Force All-Comers Meet, Kobi Rex not only recorded the third-best high jump mark in Academy history, but also the third-best mark in Mountain West history. The mark, a personal improvement by a quarterinch, also matched the program s Junior Class Record, allowing Rex to become the first high jumper since 1997 to impact the class record in that event. WINNER, WINNER Air Force swept both the high jump and mile tles, while claiming one addi onal first-place finish during the Jan. 11 meet. Kobi Rex and Rachel Herald won the men s and women s high jump, while Ma Dorsey and Anne e Eichenberger won their respec ve races in the mile. Daniel Shellhouse rounded out the first-place finishers, as he was the first to cross the finish line in the 3000-meter run. In addi on, Ma hieu Caldwell (800-meter run) and Paige Shirley (pole vault) were the top collegiate finishers in their respec ve events. A LITTLE HISTORY LESSON The women s pole vault at the Air Force All-Comers Meet featured an impressive lineup that included three Olympians. Jenn Suhr, the current world record-holder and 2012 Olympic champion, recorded a new Cadet Field House record of during her winning performance. STEFFAN PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Sco Steffan was promoted to associate head coach in December. In his seventh season with the Falcons track and field program, Steffan was named the 2012 Na onal Collegiate Pole Vault Coach of the Year and has claimed the last three USTFCCCA Mountain Region Men s Assistant Coach of the Year awards. VANCE SELECTED TO COACH AIR FORCE THROWERS Air Force has a new face on its coaching staff, as Keith Vance joined the program in December as the coach of the Falcons throwing team. Vance came to the Academy a er spending four years at Boise State, guiding the Broncos throwers to three All-American awards, 10 conference tles, two school records and 20 appearances at the NCAA Championships. HERALD EARNS WEEKLY HONORS WITH RECORD-SETTING JUMP In the first meet of her senior season, Rachel Herald broke the Academy s 17-year-old record in the high jump, claimed an event tle and earned a pair of weekly honors (Air Force Athlete of the Week, Mountain West Women s Indoor Athlete of the Week). Clearing 5 10½, Herald broke the previous standard of 5 9¾ that Jen Petykowski had held since A career-best mark by over three inches, Herald also sha ered the Senior Class Record of 5 7 that had Kris Lowenthal had held since ALSTON BREAKS ACADEMY RECORD A second Academy record fell at the Air Force Holiday Open on Dec. 13, as Naomi Alston clocked a program-best me of in the 300-meter dash. Placing fi h overall in the 22-runner event, the sophomore cut nearly one second off of the previous Academy standard for that event, which is in its third year of being contested. TABB HAS STANDOUT MEET Danielle Tabb had a strong showing during the season-opening meet, sweeping the throwing events with career-best performances. The junior recorded the third-best shot put distance in Academy history (48 10 ) to win that event by nearly five feet, while tallying the program s fi h-best weight throw mark (54 7½ ) to finish first in that event by over three feet. Tabb s distance in the shot put debuted in 15th on the na onal standings following the first month of the season. HAMILTON SHINES IN SEASON OPENER Air Force earned another update to the program s top-10 from the shot put, as Grant Hamilton tossed a career-best distance of 54 10¼ to win that event and debut in 10th on the program s all- me list.

The freshman, who recorded a distance of 17 3¼ to take second in the long jump and ran the anchor leg of the winning mile relay (4:02.15), clocked the seventh-fastest 60-meter hurdles me in Academy history (9.02) during a second runner-up performance. LOOKING LOCAL The Falcons have 14 athletes that hail from the state of Colorado, including three Hannah Everson, Kobi Rex and Andre Young that are from the Colorado Springs area. THE DOORS ARE ALWAYS OPEN The Air Force Holiday Open was the first of six meets at the Cadet Field House Indoor Track for the Falcons during the indoor season, which culminates with the 2014 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships (Feb. 27-Mar. 1). In addi on to the December meet and the conference championships, the Falcons will also host the Air Force All-Comers Meet (Jan. 11), the Air Force Invita onal (Jan ), the Air Force Team Challenge (Feb. 7) and the Air Force Collegiate Open (Feb. 15). LEADING THE WAY Eight seniors will serve as team captains for the track and field team. Pole vaulter Ellio Beski, thrower William Kent, middle distance runner Alex Lindsay and sprinter David Ptacek were chose as captains of the men s team, while middle distance runner Anne e Eichenberger, jumper Kassie Gurnell, pole vaulter Paige Shirley and javelin thrower Kim Smith were voted to serve as the captains of the women s team. LINDEMAN CELEBRATING 25 YEARS WITH THE FALCONS IN 2014 Ralph Lindeman is celebra ng his 25th season as Air Force s head coach this season. A 12- me conference coach of the year, Lindeman has guided the men s team to three conference tles during the last four championships seasons. QUICK LOOK BACK AT THE CROSS COUNTRY SEASON The cross country team wrapped up an impressive 2013 campaign, highlighted by a 20th-place finish from the men at the NCAA Championships. Isaiah Bragg, who became the program s first Mountain West champion, paced the men to their first na onal ranking since the 2005 season. Bragg and Patrick Corona earned all-conference and all-region honors on the men s side, while Hannah Everson captured both awards on the women s side. Everson, who became the first Air Force female to earn first-team all-mw accolades, was one of two all-conference honorees for the women, as Anne e Eichenberger s ninthplace finish marked the first me in program history that a pair of runners finished among the conference s top 10. Kent, who was also honored with the Mountain West Hal Rothman Sportsmanship Award in June, was one of three student-athletes to receive the na onal NCAA honor. In addi on, Rebecca Esselstein earned CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America honors... the only sophomore on the 45-member women s squad... while Jake Hawkins and Kobi Rex were named the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.
