6 33 24 Game 4 Winnipeg TORONTO The Argonauts began the season on a three-game road trip for the first time in team history and finally returned to Rogers Centre. Toronto played their best quarter of the year in the first jumping out to a 17-3 lead on touchdowns from RB Chad Kackert and rookie WR Sammy Tranks, his first of his career. Argos QB Cleo Lemon got off to a red-hot start completing his first 5 passes and leading the team to 10 points during their first two drives. Lemon was knocked out of the game early when LB Joe Lobendahn delivered a vicious blow on a 15-yard scramble. Second -year Argos QB Dalton Bell was forced to play the remainder of the game and hooked up with Tranks on a WR screen pass for the major. Toronto had a commanding 17-6 lead at halftime but failed to hold for the duration of the game. Bombers QB Buck Pierce threw three second-half TD passes and took a late hit from Toronto defender Ejiro Kuale in the third that resulted in Kuale s ejection. The Double Blue were outscored 27-7 in the second half. Bell finished the game for 169 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Pierce was magnificent for the Bombers as he finished 22-of-28 passing for 361 yards and three TDs. Chad Owens led all Argos receivers with 4 catches for 70 yards. On defence, Argos DE Ricky Foley continued his great play notching 7 tackles and 1 sack. While, DS Willie Pile and DT Kevin Huntley both forced fumbles. 7 Game Friday July 29, 2011 Commonwealth Stadium Attendance: 32,478 TORONTO Edmonton QB Dalton Bell started for the Argos in place of injured QB Cleo Lemon. Once again, the Argonauts got off to a great start but could not put together a complete game. Toronto opened up a 14-1 lead early in the second quarter as Kackert went in from eight yards out for his second TD of the game. A huge 48-yard passing play from Bell to WR Spencer Watt put the Argos in scoring position. Argos K Noel Prefontaine missed the game with a leg injury and forced backup K/LB Grant Shaw to handle all kicking duties. It was his 35-yard field goal in the second quarter that gave the Argos a 17-1 lead. Edmonton stormed back with WR Marcus Henry on the receiving end of a 5-yard pass from QB Rick Ray. On Edmonton s next possession a pass interference call to Argos DB Lin-J Shell allowed the Esks down to the Argos one-yard line, resulting in one of the most bizarre sequences in recent football memory. Esks backup QB Kerry Joseph s attempted to dive the ball into the endzone from the one-yard line, which appeared to have failed as time apparently expired at the half. The Argos, believing they had stopped the Esks in a goal line stand, headed to their dressing room for halftime but officials determined that there was still 1.5 seconds remaining, which forced the Argonauts back on to the field. Joseph made the most of the second chance and plunged across the line to cut Toronto s lead to at half. In the second half, Toronto surged ahead on a massive play two minutes into the final quarter. Argos DB Matt Black turned on the jets and blazed 81-yards for a punt return touchdown. Edmonton came back and scored a TD and a field goal in the final frame to give them a slight and eventually the win. Defensively, Argos DE Ronald Flemons and DT Kevin Huntley recorded sacks, while DT Claude Wroten penetrated the Eskimo backfield all game. 8 36 23 Game 6 Montreal TORONTO Trying to snap a 4 game losing streak, the Argonauts were neck and neck in the first half with the defending Grey Cup champions before giving way in the second half. Toronto starting QB Cleo Lemon was back under centre and he played a solid game. Thursday Aug. 4, 2011 Rogers Centre Attendance: 19,204 Anthony Calvillo surpassed former Argonaut QB Damon Allen on the all-time completions list by completing 9 of his first 10 passes. Calvillo finished 30-of-36 passing for 349 yards and a TD with no picks. Montreal took a advantage at halftime and didn t hand it back. 9 Game Saturday August 13, 2011 Ivor Wynne Stadium Attendance: 24,347 TORONTO Hamilton Toronto QB Cleo Lemon threw three touchdown passes and a career-high 367 yards in the wild affair that had five lead changes. Hamilton QB Kevin Glenn threw two TDs and the defence held on for a win over Toronto. The Argos put up more than 500 yards of total offence for the first time in over a year. Argos WR Brandon Rideau scored two TDs, including a 69-yard catchand-run, while SB/RB Andre Durie and RB Cory Boyd, back after a fourgame layoff due to injury, each added one. Toronto opened the game with an 80-yard drive on just five plays, ending with a 21-yard TD strike from Lemon to Rideau giving the Argos a 7-0 lead just 2:45 into the game. The teams traded field goals before Lemon led the Argos 86 yards downfield, hitting Durie with a 23-yard TD strike to take a lead in the second quarter. But the Ticats got it back with an 84-yard drive culminating in a 10-yard TD pass from Glenn to WR Aaron Kelly. 10 18 24 Game 8 Saskatchewan TORONTO RB Cory Boyd ran for two TDs as the Argonauts held on for a win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders, halting a six-game losing streak for the Double Blue. The Argos set the tone for the game when LB Jordan Younger recovered Riders QB Darian Durant s fumble at the Riders 31-yard line on their first offensive play of the game. Toronto earned its first home win over Saskatchewan (1-7) since K/P Noel Prefontaine had three field goals, two converts and a single for Toronto. His 47-yard field goal on the final play of the second quarter earned Toronto its 14-0 half-time lead. Boyd had the first half s lone TD on a one-yard run at 5:34 of the first, which was setup by a pass interference penalty that put Toronto at the Saskatchewan one-yard line. The Riders threatened to steal away the win late in the fourth quarter when they scored two majors in five minutes and nearly scored the game-winner with no time on the clock. CB Byron Parker and DB Evan McCollough teamed up to save the game for the Boatmen. Thursday Aug. 18, 2011 Rogers Centre Attendance: 20, :01 TOR SI N. The two teams combined for 423 kickoff return yards on 13 kickoff returns, both league records. Argonauts starter Cleo Lemon was 11-of-15 passing in the opening half. Backup QB Dalton Bell came on in the third and completed 5-of-16 passes for 42 yards Review Argos DE Ricky Foley s played in his first game against his former team and finished with five tackles, a pass knockdown and fumble recovery. LB Anthony Cannon and S Willie Pile had 10 tackles each. DE Ronald Flemons, DT Claude Wroten and Pile had a sack each, and Wroten forced a fumble. 1 2:35 TOR FG PREFONTAINE Field Goal (36 yds) 1 4:40 BC FG P. MCCALLUM Field Goal (46 yds) 1 14:39 BC TD T. 12 6 28 Game 10 TORONTO British Colombia QB Steven Jyles made his Argos debut and improved as the game went on, but it wasn t enough for the win. Lions SB Geroy Simon had over 100 receiving yards, including a 33-yard TD catch, as the B.C. Lions said goodbye to Empire Field with a win. Lions QB Travis Lulay passed for 263 yards, while Simon caught for more than 100 yards on the afternoon. In the third quarter Lulay showed his running skills, taking off on a 53-yard dash that set up a field goal. The B.C. defence also showed its claws, making life difficult for Steven Jyles. Jyles was sacked four times, had passes knocked down, and had to scramble several times. Jyles was named starter after the Argos released Cleo Lemon earlier in the week. B.C. squandered the chance of two touchdowns. Simon fumbled on the oneyard line on the opening drive and Lulay was intercepted in the end zone in the second quarter. It was Toronto s DB Evan McCollough who recovered the fumble and stepped in front of Akeem Foster for the pick. CB Byron Parker tracked Simon to force the goal line fumble. Saskatchewan s DBs James Patrick s and Chris McKenzie each picked off Steven Jyles passes. McKenzie s went for a 33 yard touchdown to seal the game in Saskatchewan s favour. In all, the Roughriders scored 16 points in the fourth quarter Review The Argos managed just 12 points as K/P Noel Prefontaine kicked field goals from 18, 41, 35, and 32 yards. It was 9-0 for the Argos before the Riders got on the scoreboard. Darian Durant connected with Chris Getzlaf for his fifth touchdown in his last three games. 14 24 25 Game 12 Winnipeg TORONTO A Noel Prefontaine 47-yard single with 23 seconds remaining helped lift the Argonauts over Winnipeg. Prefontaine missed a 38-yard field goal try, but Toronto managed to tackle the Bombers returner in the end zone for the single. The Argos defence produced one of its biggest plays of the year in the third quarter when S Willie Pile forced Terrance Edwards to fumble, which was recovered by Argos LB Jeremy Unertl who lateralled to teammate DB Evan McCollough who raced 60 yards for a touchdown. The Bombers played the second half minus starting QB Buck Pierce, RBs Fred Reid & Carl Volny and DT Doug Brown. Alex Brink replaced Pierce. DB Jovon Johnson and OT Glenn January scored Winnipeg s other touchdowns. January scored when he fell on a fumbled ball in the endzone. K Justin Palardy added the converts and a field goal. Argos LS/WR Chad Rempel also had a touchdown for Toronto. Prefontaine booted three converts and another single. Argonauts DB Lin-J Shell led all players with 10 DTs, Ricky Foley had 2 sacks, DT Claude Wroten and DT Kevin Huntley each had one a piece, S Willie Pile forced two fumbles, Jason Pottinger forced one fumble, and both CB Sean Smalls and CB Byron Parker had interceptions. Porter scored one play after Toronto DE Ricky Foley was ejected following a melee to put Hamilton at the Argos one-yard line. Toronto pulled to within 17-6 on Prefontaine s 18-yard field goal at 14:33. It was set up by Prefontaine s 21-yard completion to Jeff Johnson off a fake punt that put the Argos at the Hamilton 31-yard line. Toronto only mustered four Noel Prefontaine field goals. 16 19 29 Game 14 TORONTO Montreal A punt return touchdown by Argos WR/KR Chad Owens and a halftime lead was not enough to stop QB Anthony Calvillo and the Als on a record-setting afternoon in Montreal. The Argos offence could not seem to build on an impressive first half, in which they led for the majority of the contest. Calvillo became pro football s all-time passing leader in spectacular fashion with a 50-yard TD pass to WR Jamel Richardson that cemented the Montreal win. Calvillo went into the game needing 258 yards to break Damon Allen s alltime record of 72,381 yards. And it took until the final play of the third quarter for Calvillo to eclipse it when he found Richardson open over the middle for the touchdown. Owens scored on a punt return and Argos K/P Noel Prefontaine booted four field goals for the Argonauts. Argos Steven Jyles 46-yard toss to WR Spencer Watt allowed Prefontaine to tie the game. DB Lin-J Shell had a team-leading 10 DT and a QB sack, LB Anthony Cannon and S Willie Pile both forced fumbles and Pile picked off an errant Calvillo pass. 17 Game Friday Oct. 14, 2011 Rogers Centre Attendance: 18,720 Calgary TORONTO Argos RB Cory Boyd ran for 148 yards and Noel Prefontaine kicked a field goal with 11 seconds left to play as the Argonauts held off the Stampeders. With the win, the Argos swept the two-game season series against Calgary. Toronto looked to be comfortably in front with a 28-9 lead at the half, but went scoreless in the second half until the final play of the game. The Argonauts defence pushed Stampeders starter Henry Burris out of the game which made way for rookie Drew Tate who nearly led Calgary to an unlikely comeback win Review Toronto s 21-point outburst in the second quarter started with backup QB B.J. Hall coming in for a three-yard TD run. After Calgary s third field goal of the half, Toronto marched right back down the field and QB Steven Jyles completed a 15-yard TD pass to Brandon Rideau with seconds remaining in the half. Boyd s rushing performance was tied for the second-best yardage total of his career. Chad Owens had 7 kickoff returns for 191 yards and DT Kevin Huntley turned in his first multi-sack game of the season with two. 18 31 24 Game 16 Toronto s WR/KR Chad Owens became the first player in pro football history to surpass 3,000 all-purpose yards in consecutive seasons during the Argonauts Pink game in support of Women s cancers. Esks QB Ricky Ray threw two TD passes and ran for another as Edmonton held on to beat the Argonauts. Toronto made things very interesting in the fourth, scoring three TDs to pull to within Argos DB Lin-J Shell recovered a fumble by Eskimos RB Jerome Messam at the Argos 43-yard line with 36 seconds remaining. But DB Weldon Brown s interception on the game s final play ended Toronto s comeback bid. With 5:33 left in the second Owens cracked the 3,000-yard plateau with a sparkling 58-yard punt return. However, Toronto was penalized for an illegal block, reducing Owens return to 36 yards, more than the 5 yards Owens needed to set the new benchmark. Toronto had a 24-3 lead in the second quarter and 24-6 at halftime, including Parker s interception of a Buck Pierce pass that he ran back 48 yards for the touchdown, the ninth pick for a TD in Parker s seven-year career and the most by any player in league history. The Bombers lost Pierce for the game on the play when he rolled his ankle, he was replaced by backup Alex Brink Review Toronto QB Steven Jyles was injured with 9:03 left in the game when he was sliding and sustained a helmet-to-helmet by Bombers DB Johnny Sears. An onfield tussle ensued between both teams and Sears and Argos LB Jason Pottinger were kicked out of the game. Argonauts backup QB Dalton Bell finished the game in place of Jyles. Toronto WR Jeremaine Copeland also caught a 32-yard pass from Bell in the first quarter to put him over the 10,000 yard receiving mark for his career. He became only the 15th player in league history to do so. Prefontaine kicked a 49-yard field goal in the third quarter to stretch the Argos lead to Durie scored his second TD of the game on a 33-yard hitch pass and run to record his first-ever 100-yard receiving game. The Argos increased their lead when rookie DB Jasper Simmons picked off a Quinton Porter pass and returned it inside the Hamilton 10 yard line. Toronto RB Cory Boyd finished off the drive with a six-yard touchdown run. Backup RB had more than 160 yards returning punts and kickoffs and LB Willie Pile, DL Alex Buzbee and DE Ricky Foley all recorded one sack each. Rookie DL Zander Robinson forced a fumble on special teams. Thursday Nov. 3, 2011 Rogers Centre Attendance: 20, :52 HAM FG J. MEDLOCK Field Goal (34 yds) 1 9:22 TOR TD D.BELL Completed Pass to A.
