1 Volume 3 Issue 2 Newsletter for Desford Striders Running Club February 2002 Brad Pitt & Jennifer Aniston join Desford Striders Sue Kirton, Desford Striders Membership Secretary, tries a new and unique method of collecting the 2002 club fees! Well o.k. maybe its never going to happen, but I m sure if they knew what great value for money the club offers, including splendid social activities, they would be over here like a shot and that s why I want to talk to you about membership fees yes, its that time again and as you all know, payment is due on the 1st March (no, not April, May, June, July, Christmas!), but yes, 1st March. I therefore look forward to receiving your lovely money promptly, without the need for any further requests or any other method deemed necessary, i.e. public humiliation, torture or Woody! In anticipation, thank you very much. Your friendly Membership Secretary, Sue Kirton. (No not Woody.my cheques in the post, Ed!) Sue s address is: 88 Shilton Road, Barwell, Leicestershire, LE9 8BN. Leicestershire Road Running League. Excellent Strider turn out for new Wreake 10K new Winter league season, a new race and new aches and pains! It s the day after the Wreake 10K, a new race on the LRRL calendar, and the only words that keep coming into my head, are ow! and that was tough. Starting from the Scraptoft Campus of De Montfort University, the out and back route wound it s way through the villages of Beeby, Keyham and eventually back into Scraptoft. On it s way around, the course took in a number of long hills, which combined with strong winds buffeting the runners at every opportunity, made for a tough race. Despite the rather non-running' weather, the organisers were rewarded with a field of 304 runners a vast improvement on the last race of the foot and mouth affected 2001 Winter series, when less than 200 turned up. Helping towards this large total was a very good turnout of 19 Striders, amongst which were Jo Czuczman (55th) and Nick Palmer (205th), who ran their first road League race for the club. Matt Taylor, who last year competed in the Summer League, ran one of the Winter fixtures for the first time, finishing 110th. Another newcomer to the Winter races, was Jill Sharpe, who made her second debut for the club inside 8 days, and just like the Bosworth crosscountry race, she had a good run, finishing in 30th place. It s a boy! Winter 10 February Ashby 10K 24 February Markfield 10K 10 March Stilton 10K 24 March Barrow 6 ( 2 entry fee, payable on the day.) 2002 LRRL fixtures Next race: Ashby 10K start from Ashby Leisure Centre - the usual place. Unfortunately, I ve not got the results for the Wreake race yet. Hopefully they will be here in time for next month. We have just heard that Karen Percy gave birth to little Edward (9lbs 11ozs) on Saturday 26th January. Mum, Dad, Alexander and Uncle Mike all doing well, although Dad did miss the second half of the Tigers European Cup match! Anyway many congratulations to Karen, Duncan and big brother Alexander.

2 Page 2 Derby Runner Cross-country League Striders battle through the Bosworth mud he start of the Bosworth round of the x-country league was held up for 15 minutes, due to the much hoped for appearance of Sue Kirton. But the crowd s excitement was sadly curtailed when the race organisers decided to go ahead without her. Well that s how I was going to start this report, because after the Thursday night club run, Sue had replied and emphatic NO!, when asked if she would be running on Sunday. Each time came back the reply, NO!!, NO!!!. You could feel the number of exclamation marks increasing. So on that Sunday morning we were surprised and delighted to see her striding across Bosworth Battlefield, well o.k. the car park, to join what ended up being a 21 strong Striders team. Although it must be said, she didn t look half as pleased as we did! The course turned out to be a bit of a toughie, not as much water as one would expect from Hinckley RC, but instead vast quantities of calf (that s leg not cow), deep mud. There was also what seemed like a dozen railway embankments, but turned out to be only one. The beggars just kept taking us up and down the same one all the time. There were, what one could faster sections to the race, especially along the canal bank, but overall it was a very good test of our fitness. (I failed! Ed.) Notable appearances were made by Nigel Trotman, running in his first cross country league race for 2 years, and he had a fine run, finishing in a time of 51.46, in 132nd place. Jill Sharpe chose Bosworth, to make her cross country debut for the Striders. Despite the hard going, or perhaps because of it, she seemed to enjoy herself, because not long after finishing, she had a huge smile on her face. Unless, of course, it was because the ordeal was over? Anyway, either way she had a very good run, crossing the line in 30th positions, in a time of THE NEWSTRIDER Belper results Gwyn Morgan Andrew Cole Andy Ball Duncan Percy Richard McBean John Cooper Greg Jones Derek Cox Graham Hobbs Paul Kirton Nigel Trotman Francis Breen Malc Hill Emma Cox Julie Messenger Sue Cox Steph Warner Jill Sharpe Gwyneth Reed Valda Holmes Sue Kirton The large gathering must have inspired a few people (in particular the ladies), because the club achieved its best set of results this season. The overall team position was 6th, with men finishing in 5th place. But the gold star performance of the day was from the ladies. They finished in a brilliant 2nd place, with only Shelton ahead of them on the day. This excellent result has moved them up to third in the table, just 3 points behind 2nd placed Hinckley. Emma Cox, running in her second race of the season, brought them home, finishing a superb 10th. Sue Kirton completed the course in a time of , having managed to swear at just one marshal! A feat in itself. As mentioned, the men also gained their best result, when they finished 5th, largely due to the first 8 finishing in the top 100. A first for the season. Gwyn Morgan was first home in 22nd place, whilst Duncan Percy, still coming back from injury, keeps making big improvements, this time he finished 51st. Just 10 places behind him was Richard McBean, who is starting to return to the sort of form he was showing 18 months ago. 3 THE NEWSTRIDER Page 3 Derby Runner Cross-country League - next race: At the time of going to print Wreake RC had not sent us any details of the next race. But we believe it to be at Scraptoft, the usual time of and cost will be 2.00 Keep an eye on the notice board at SiD for more details. Derby Runner Cross- country League As far as we are aware the cost for each of these races is 2.00, payable on the day. 17th February - Wreake 3rd March - Shelton 24th March - League Final County cross-country Championships The club had 9 runners take part in the county Championships, held at Groby Community College on the first Saturday of the year. Gwyn Morgan was the first Strider to complete the 3 lap course in a time of 36.13, finishing 40th. He was very closely followed by Duncan Percy (44th, 36.26) and Duncan Astle, who had an excellent run and was just 9 seconds behind Big Dunc in 48th place. Of the clubs who entered, there were 9 scoring teams, of which the men came 7th. The veterans fared a little better, finishing 5th out of total of 10 teams. For the ladies we had Sue Cox and Valda Holmes taking part. Sue finished 28th overall and was the 11th fastest veteran in the county. Whilst Valda, 15th veteran in the county, finished in 30th position. For some reason the ladies results didn t have any times with them, so I can t bring you those. With both ladies teams needing at least three members, I m afraid Sue and Valda s hard work didn t count towards the team event. Many thanks to the participating Striders for representing the club at an important fixture. And also to Mike Percy and Andy Ball for their support on the day. I think at this point Richard McBean deserves a huge thank you. Following the advertising of the XC championships in previous newsletters, he unfortunately had little interest shown. So he got on the phone, started ringing around, and ensured that the club would be represented. Well done and thank you Richard. Huncote Hash Gwyn Morgan Richard McBean Duncan Percy Derek Cox Phil Lord Graham Hobbs Nick Palmer Jo Czuczman The Huncote Hash On a cool frosty Sunday morning 184 competitors, including 8 Striders, tackled the traditional end of year Huncote Hash on December 30th. Run over a cross-country course of around 10K, the runners have a number of challenges to surmount, including the infamous Croft Hill. Having just about survived this, were later on faced with a short, sharp climb and descent called the Sand-pit and about 40 yards of very wet and extremely cold stream to run along. Overnight snow added to our fun and the cold conditions provided a good, solid surface to run on, though in places there was some good ankle turning country. They all had fine runs and gave the event the thumbs up. Jo expressed her enjoyment of the race, when she said how much more interesting the course was, than that flat, uninteresting one out at, oh where was it? Derby somewhere? After the race it was back to Huncote Leisure Centre where competitors were able to warm themselves on piping hot soup and a bread roll.

4 Page 4 Cross-country - individual club standings THE NEWSTRIDER Here s something else for you to digest. The latest club standings. Anyone who completes a league race (either x-country or road), is awarded points. The amount of points gained depends on their finishing position, related to other Striders within their category. First home will receive, for example 10 points, next 9, and so on. The points allocated, depends on the maximum number of runners we have in a given race. We only have 3 or 4 senior ladies who run the races, so the winner will probably receive 4 points. Whereas in the male veteran section, we could have up to 13 participants. In this situation the first home would get 13 points, etc. I hope I ve explained the system clearly, if not buy me a drink up at SiD and I ll try again. So onto the latest positions. These are following the Bosworth XC. Full details will be posted on the notice board at SiD. As you can see, as we come towards the end of the League races, Steph Warner, Sue Cox, Richard McBean and Andrew Cole are in the pole positions. But none of them are so far in front, that they are guaranteed a win. Especially if they can t get to a race! See you at Scraptoft? Anyway congratulations to them. They are part of a team of 5 Striders taking on the capitols main running event. The others being Andy Ball (hoping to break 3 hours this year), Malc Hill (for the 11th time I think), and a new member, Nick Morton, who has acquired a place with the official Flora Team and like Jill and Sterrin, will be running his first marathon. Good luck to all of you. Please send any items to go in the Newsletter to: Graham Hobbs, at 146 Kirkby Road, Barwell, LE9 8FS. Tel or family.hobbs@ntlworld.com Deadline for March s issue is 24th February 2002 The AGM has been set for Thursday 21st February and will start at 8.00 p.m. sharp. The club run for that evening will start at p.m. to allow us time to get to the bar, oh yes! And then into the meeting. Nominations are being taken for the committee positions. If you wish to stand, or sit, on the committee, please let us know as soon as possible. Alternatively, if you want to put somebody else forward, please do so. But don t forget to have a word with them first! Please make every effort to attend, this is your club, and your participation, views, comments, ideas etc. are needed. 5 THE NEWSTRIDER Page 5 From the Editor s Desk With so much going on within the club, especially at this time of year, the size of the newsletter seems to be growing ever larger. With the introduction of the X- country and road running standings, I get the feeling we will have to become fortnightly! On second thoughts no! Seriously, I really would like some feedback please. Is the newsletter getting too big or is just the right size?(hopefully you don t want it any bigger!) Is anything missing? Is there too much info / not enough? Do you have difficulty picking out the important stuff? Do you not want it all? Please let me know, it would help me greatly. Other than the Huncote Hash, (see separate article on previous page) there s not a great deal to report in the way of Touring Striders. The only one I am aware of is Andrew Cole, who travelled abroad to take part in in the Denbeigh 10K on New Years Day. He finished 10th overall in a time of Thanks for the info Andrew, exactly the sort of thing The Newstrider is looking for.
