Kettering Hockey Club October 2018 Newsletter Welcome one and all to the start of another fun filled season The season started with HockeyFest and a celebration of our award as England Hockey Club of the Year We were honoured that Mike Stoddard non-executive director of England hockey and Cllr. James Burton the Mayor of Kettering and his wife were able to join us for the evening. Also represented were SilverFX and Opro and many thanks to Graham Smith who kindly donated and presented new Skymoons kit to our captains. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success and most of all thanks go to everyone who turned up you make the club what it is!

Socials Unfortunately we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the Murder Mystery night which was planned for 13 th October due to poor ticket sales. Our thanks and apologies go to local theatre group the Cytringham Players who were scheduled to perform at the event. Please please please support these future social events. The funds raised from these events go towards keeping our annual subs and match fees some of the lowest in the country for our size of club, and to our two chosen charities for 2018 Cransley Hospice and Golden Years. 5 KETTERING HOCKEY CLUB PLAYING KIT Just a quick reminder that all orders for playing kit should be made online at and this includes express delivery to your home address. Any problems please contact Ross Mathieson at kit@ketteringhockeyclub.co.uk DON T FORGET EASY FUNDRAISING Every time you buy something online remember to go via the Easy Fundraising website / app This will help us raise money for the club
KHC s CHARITIES FOR CRANSLEY HOSPICE AND GOLDEN YEARS Kettering HC have made a commitment to put something back into their community by donating a percentage of their fundraising efforts to local charities. Anyone at last year s Club dinner could not fail to be moved by the speech made by Johnny Mackay s mum regarding Johnny s Happy Place. Last season we supported Wren Spinney School as well as Johnny s Happy Place and we were able to present both with 800. This year we will be supporting Cransley Hospice and Golden Years and it would be wonderful if we could present them with similar amounts or even more!! Cransley Hospice is our local Hospice where patients receive outstanding palliative care. I guess nearly everyone in the Club knows of someone who has benefitted from Cransley s excellent work. They run a number of open fundraisers throughout the year, cycles, runs etc and it would be great if any KHC members who take part wear their KHC shirt and get a photo. We will be participating in Cransley s Jam Jar Army! Fill up a jam jar with spare change and bring it to the club for the attention of secretary Liz Metcalfe. We will donate all the cash to them at the end of the season!
Golden Years is a charity set up by former Kettering hockey player Megan Neilan (Poole), which helps the elderly and vulnerable in society cope with loneliness and the loss of things like being able to drive and is probably best explained by reading the article below. GOLDEN YEARS Megan Neilan (Poole) was a valued member of Kettering Hockey Club for a number of years Megan set up Golden Years after training to be a nurse. She was heartbroken to see the state of the care system, with all its cuts to funding and lack of staff. The long hours prevented her from doing her job as a nurse in the best way she wanted too and also prevented her from looking after her own grandmother, with whom she has a close relationship. Megan decided to do something different and set up her friendship group on the 8th of July 2017 with the idea of getting a few people to find new friends and enjoy some activities. The first
meeting was a month later on the 8th of August, and the project has gone leaps and bounds since. Golden Years is a community-based voluntary group offering a wide range of activities and events for older members of the community to get involved in, with the main aim of helping to reduce loneliness and isolation. Different interests and ambitions are catered for with the believe that an individual is never too old to experience excitement and happiness. Megan says If you can promote independent living and maintain a social life, the brain will stay stronger for longer. Golden Years has been proven to work. One of its members was discharged from the care system because of the new purpose they found within themselves to go out and do something new and exciting. Another recently had to give up her driving license, but instead of a sad occasion, Golden Years has managed to organise a Ferrari driving experience for her to make her last drive a memorable one! There are many more examples. The group has gained publicity from local news outlets, because of the fun activities it organises as well as the impact it has had on the elderly community. They ve gone indoor skydiving and ice skating, destroying the stereotypes that old people can t really do anything for themselves. The members were sceptical of these activities at first but having done them everyone was proud of what they had achieved and many have found new confidence in what they could do. Megan has worked with the elderly for 10 years and considers herself to be lucky enough to be inspired by some amazing characters who taught her to know no boundaries and to dream big. So, her dream for Golden Years is to one day have its own minibus that can open up a whole world of opportunities and experiences for the older people in the community as they celebrate the Golden Years of life.
WHAT HAS KHC EVER DONE FOR YOU? On Monday 17th September, KHC in conjunction with Northamptonshire County Women s Hockey Association (NCWHA) helped host an Umpires Forum, entitled Improving the Standard of Umpiring. The evening was hosted by David Elworthy (Officiating Relationship Manager for England Hockey) and National League (NPUA) Umpire, our own Chairman, Jaime Cox. KHC was very well represented and attendees commented how beneficial it was. Hopefully, this will be transferred into the improved standard of umpiring that we will see this season. Look out for future events! If you are interested in hearing more about or wish to give umpiring a go then please contact umpires@ketteringhockeyclub.co.uk for more details.
What else?? Those who umpired enough games last year will look super smart this year. The Club has rewarded umpires those who have umpired 10 club games with a free umpires orange shirt. Those who have done 20 also get a green one to match. We value our umpires and this is the club s way of saying thank you, because without them there wouldn t be a game. The shirts will be delivered ASAP to the individuals involved so far. Congratulations to Dom Cusk who recently passed his Level 1 umpiring award! What else?? KHC have put an order in for 4 mini goals to match the four that Bishop currently have at the pitch. This means the school will now have eight to use in lessons and we will have eight to use in training. This again reinforces the club s partnership with the school and our commitment to promoting junior hockey.
What else?? Kindly sponsored by Metro Removals, the Scoreboard in the Clubhouse is to be ungraded. The executive committee are putting together the final designs for a new scoreboard to go in the Clubhouse to replace the current well used one. The content will be similar but it will look a lot more professional as befits the England Hockey Club of the Year! What else?? Bobble Hats - available to order via the Payment option on the website (did anyone spot the accidental Spelling mistake :D ) 12 each Deadline Wednesday 17 th October!! ideal Christmas present?
FITNESS SESSIONS Having recently read a couple of match reports where fitness or should we say lack of fitness was mentioned as a problem it would seem sensible to try and do something about it by coming along to our fitness sessions. These now take place indoors on Mondays at Bishop Stopford School in the Gym from pm 2 a session. Sessions are varied and very much related to playing Hockey so if you think you need to improve your speed, agility or stamina (or maybe all three) Come along and give it a go.
