1 KENDAL BOWMEN Winter Newsletter! Shoot Dates 3rd/2/18 Keswick Snowman Shoot, Keswick Rugby Club. Outdoor target, a friendly local shoot, fairly short distances. A good shoot for newer members. 11th/2/10 Cumbria Indoor Championships, Penrith Leisure Centre. A Portsmouth round, 60arrows at 20yards at a 60cm face. You can shoot morning or afternoon. A good local shoot. 18th/2/18 Kendal Portsmouth, Queen Katherine School Kendal. The club s annual indoor shoot, again a Portsmouth round. Excellent for newer members and it would be great to have lots of club members attending. 11th/3/18 Cumbria Frostbite shoot, Egremont. Outdoor target, a Frostbite round, 8dozen arrows at 30m on an 80cm face. A nice local shoot, but bring your hat and gloves! Welcome to the Winter edition of the Kendal Bowmen Newsletter! Happy New Year to everyone, I hope you all had a good Christmas and go lots of nice archery related presents! Along with the new year the new archery season is starting with a good number of local tournaments over the next few months including the club s indoor Portsmouth. This newsletter has some information about that to hopefully encourage lots of people to come, as well some other pictures and articles. Also please note the information about the AGM. 2 Christmas Field Fun Shoot The Christmas (or possibly New Year s) Field Fun Shoot was well HAVING FUN AT BRATHAY attended with over thirty archers from the club and a number of guests from other local clubs. Although it was cold it was a good day s shoot and was highly entertaining to try and hit the targets with jelly bows and fibreglass arrows! Here are a couple of photos from the shoot, along with the results list on the next page. Thank you to everyone who helped to make it a success and everyone who attended and hopefully enjoyed themselves. HOW CAN YOU SHOOT AT THAT ANGLE? Shoot Dates (continued) Kendal Cricket Club. For Longbow shooters only. Western rounds, shorter rounds available for newer archers. 7th and 8th/4/18 Kendal Bowmen GNAS Field Shoot, Hutton Park Woods. The club s annual two day field shoot, if you re interested in field archery please talk to Tony, Freya or Mark. 15th/4/18 Kendal Clout practice day, the County Showfield Crooklands. A very relaxed opportunity to come and learn about clout. You must have attended a clout practice before you can do clout competitions, for more information about clout speak to Craig. 4 252 Awards Update You may remember that in the last Newsletter we had an article from Mark Gill about the 252 award, an opportunity to earn a series of badges at different distance by shooting rounds at the club. The scheme is now up and running and rounds can be shot at the Cricket club on a Sunday morning. The rules and scores required for different bow types are included below. The rules and scoresheets can be downloaded from the Kendal Bowmen website: Thanks to Mark for setting it up and I hope everyone gets some pretty badges! KENDAL BOWMEN 252 IMPROVEMENT AWARD The 252 award is designed to help you practice your shooting at different distances and to recognise your achievements. After 6 sighters, you shoot 3 dozen arrows on a 122cm face at your chosen distance. The round can be shot at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80 or 100 yards with the aim of scoring 252 or better (alternative scores apply for other bow types). If you achieve the score twice you can claim a badge. It is an award scheme in use at many archery clubs in the UK and applies to all archers, irrespective of age, ability or bow type (scores differ by bow type). The rules: Six sighters to be followed immediately by 3 dozen scored arrows. 5-zone scoring (Gold = 9, Red = 7, Blue = 5, Black = 3, White = 1) using a 122com target face. The 3 dozen arrows may be shot alone or as the first 3 dozen of a longer imperial round. Badges must be claimed in sequence. Scores need to be achieved twice to qualify for the award. Qualifying scores for a given distance must be shot on different days. To make an award claim 2 signed and witnessed score sheets needs to be submitted to MARK GILL. 4

5 Indoor Shooting - Elf & Pastry and Etiquette Given that we have quite a lot of newer members at the moment and as acting health and safety officer, I thought I should just briefly reiterate some of the rules and etiquette for shooting indoors at the club so that everyone hopefully knows what they are doing and is fairly safe. So in no particular order: Set up If target faces need putting up and the club bow rack needs to be brought out then please help with this before setting up your own equipment. ELF & PASTRY All gear to be set up in the kitchen to maximise space in the hall. Please check before you come out of the kitchen/toilets into the hall that people are not shooting, do not step out and then check! And while you are waiting for the whistle try to stand back a bit rather than directly in the doorway, otherwise it can be a bit off putting for people shooting! If you use a bow stand try to place it in such a way that it doesn t cause too many access issues or try to use the club s bow rack if you don t have stabilisation rods and V bars. STAY BEHIND THE SHOOTING THERE WILL BE ARROWS AND CHECK BEFORE LINE! THERE MIGHT EVEN BE SHARKS! STEPPING OUT! Shooting Three arrows per end indoors, especially when it s busy. Please remember not to put an arrow on the string until you are on the shooting line and ideally don t step up to the line until the whistle has gone (depending on space!). If your arrow/sight/anything else fall off the bow in front to the shooting line (as occasionally happens!) try to hook it back with your bow rather walking out in front of the shooting line! When you are stepping up into the line in a gap between other archers try not to do so when they are at full draw as this can be distracting, wait until they have released and are nocking their next arrow. The same thing applies when leaving the shooting line. Be aware of where your quiver and bow is when moving behind the shooting line, especially when it s busy, sometimes arrows or long rods can accidentally catch other archers so move with caution! Don t go in front of the shooting line once the whistle has gone until it is blown twice to indicate it is safe to collect your arrows! Please make sure that any phones etc are switched onto silent during shooting nights, it can be very distracting if people s phones start ringing. If you need to take a call please go outside. Finally remember that if someone shouts Fast! you stop shooting immediately and take your arrow off your bow until you are told it is safe to continue. Anyone can shout Fast! if they see something they think is a problem, this could include things like hanging arrows as well as people or animals (unlikely inside but you never know!) in front of the BE CAREFUL NOT shooting line. TO POKE PEOPLE Collecting Arrows When going up to the stage please do not take any spare arrows in your quiver. Because space is limited extra arrows in quivers can present a hazard to people s eyes when they are bending to get arrows etc. WITH YOUR LONG ROD OR ARROWS 5

6 Do not jump onto/off the stage, especially with arrows, for safety reasons that should be obvious! Also please do not run with any arrows. Check behind you before pulling arrows out, so you don t spear someone with the nock! Please check before pulling someone else s arrows out, they might be scoring. If you need help to get arrows out, please ask, don t struggle and maybe injure yourself or damage the arrow. Apologies for such a long list, I hope that makes sense to everyone. To sum up; Be careful not to shoot anyone or put yourself at risk of getting shot, be polite, courteous, and, considerate to other archers! BE A COURTEOUS ARCHER! And on the subject of indoor archery I was asked to include this photo of one of our well known club members by other archers concerned for his welfare/ sanity under the following caption: Longbow Man Goes Off the Rails at Kendal Bowmen archery club Stuart normally shoots a longbow but decided to do a bit of practise this winter with one of the club recurves, and was dually ridiculed by everyone else.! However it is in fact a very good idea to work on improving your technique over the winter months and using a light recurve for a while to remember basic techniques can be an excellent way to do this. So despite the ridicule Stuart is actually being very sensible! He will be the one laughing when he beats everyone else at the Longbow shoot in the Spring because his technique is so much better for having practised with a recurve! 7 Kendal Bowmen AGM 2018 As agreed at the last AGM in August we will now be holding our AGM the January/February of each year. Therefore the next AGM will be held on the 12th of February, 6.45pm for a 7.00pm prompt start, upstairs at the Duke of Cumberland pub, Kendal. Hopefully you will all have seen the from Lynn with all the details. The AGM is the members chance to have an input into how their club is being run and to discover what the club s officers are doing on their behalf. So, please come along and see what your club is doing, as encouragement to get people to attend light refreshments will be available! We currently have two unfilled positions on the committee, health and safety and child protection, if anyone is interested in knowing more about these roles or indeed any other ones please contact me before the meeting. We hope to see lots of you there! Kendal Bowmen Indoor Portsmouth I have been asked by our tournament organiser to remind everyone that or club s indoor Portsmouth shoot is coming up on the 18th of February, it is an ideal shoot for beginners to come to, indoors, close distances, only sixty arrows and very friendly. Currently however there are very few entries from the club, this shoot does fill up so please do get your entry form to Mark soon if you want to shoot! Also if anyone wants to donate raffle prizes or more importantly make some cakes/cake to be sold by the catering (which raises funds for the club) that would be excellent!
