1 KETTERING HOCKEY CLUB NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2013 KETTERING & DISTRICT SPORTS AWARDS 2013 KETTERING HOCKEY CLUB IS THE 2013 COMMUNITY CLUB OF THE YEAR This is what we said about ourselves Following the 2012 London Olympics Kettering Hockey Club ran highly successful Back to Hockey sessions for adults who wished to return to Hockey, together with a number of Have a Go sessions for local school children. These proved to be so popular that many of the participants decided to join our club as members. As a result, our ladies third team is now made up almost entirely of Back to Hockey ladies and we now run three very successful junior sides at U9 U11 and U13 level. The number of juniors now attending training sessions is so great that we need to look for additional pitch time as well as more coaching staff. We are extremely proud of all our juniors who have played at County level and our boys and girls U10 teams exceeded all expectations when they qualified to represent Northamptonshire at the English Hockey regional finals in Nottingham this April. Not to be outdone by the juniors, a growing number of our more mature members have represented both Midlands and England Masters at various age groups 45+ to 75+ We have planned even more activities this year in our attempt to continue building on the legacy of the Olympics. New Back to Hockey sessions started on 23 rd July for six weeks, with a week of junior coaching from 5 th 9 th August and a Have a go day on 29 th September. We are also visiting numerous local events (The Playday in Northampton & the Burton Latimer Duck race to name but a few) all in an attempt to promote our club and actively encourage more people to join up and create sporting habits for life Our most ambitious venture to date was our GIVE IT A GO day which took place on Sunday 11 th August. Kettering Hockey Club, part of Kettering Sports Club instigated the first ever joint venture with the other sections of the club, Archery, Cricket, Rifle shooting and Tennis, and offered a series of fun filled activities enabling Kettering children and their families to Give it a Go and try out the various sports. Olympic Bronze medallist Anne Panter named Kettering Hockey Club as the community club which first nurtured her talent and set her on the road to winning Olympic Bronze. Anne joined us for the day and unveiled a plaque from Sport England to celebrate that fact. We are one of only 149 clubs across the whole country and across all Olympic sports to achieve this award

2 We have a fantastic band of volunteers who captain and team manage 3 men s teams, 3 women s teams, 2 veteran sides and our growing band of juniors. We have a superb group of volunteer coaches and umpires and a full and exciting social calendar. Kettering Hockey was the first Hockey Club in the County to achieve Clubmark Accreditation and we are proud of our excellent relationship with local schools, we run Satellite clubs at Raunds Manor School and Southfield School and coach at Grange Primary School. Most of all though we consider ourselves to be a very friendly and welcoming club who try to cater for all players whatever their age or playing ability. The presentation evening took place at Wicksteed Park Pavilion on Thursday 24 th October hosted by Lennie Newman who has strong links with Kettering Rugby Club as well as spending 22 years as a player and then manager of Northampton Saints. The picture shows Jean Smith (President) and Jaime Cox (Chairman) collecting the trophy and certificate on behalf of KHC from Matt Green and Ernst Schute from Arena Sports. Following on from this fabulous evening we were really pleased and delighted to be nominated to attend the County Sports Awards held at Kettering Conference Centre on Thursday 7 th November in an event hosted by Mike Sewell BBC 5 Live NORTHAMPTONSHIRE SPORTS AWARDS 2013 KETTERING HOCKEY CLUB IS THE 2013 COMMUNITY CLUB OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

3 PLAYER PROFILE BILL GREENWOOD Well what can we say.. Bill was always keen on sport, especially when a ball was involved and played club rugby and cricket as well as helping out with the school teams. In April 1964 he badly injured his neck (while playing rugby for Ilford) and had to stop. He could still play cricket, though, but was like a bear with a sore head during the winter. About two years later, he was asked to make up numbers for a local works team as they were regularly short, and he started to wave a stick around (nothing changes!!). He went out with the girls at school to learn how to play. The boys teased him about it but, when the girls thrashed them, the boys asked Bill to teach them so that they could beat the girls. Eventually, the boys made it through to the finals of the Essex County under 16 competition (the only Sec Mod school with a boys hockey team) and several of them went on to play at a higher level. Thanks to his walking holidays in Nijmegen, Bill made a number of contacts in Holland and his club made several trips to play hockey over there. Bill and his family moved to Suffolk where he was responsible for a Centre for Community Activities near Bury St Edmunds. Amongst other things, he started hockey and cricket clubs there and also played for RAF Honington (eligible because he ran evening classes on base as part of his work). He also started a series of walks and arranged international exchanges and continues to walk at Nijmegen. In 1972 the family moved to Gutersloh in Germany, where Bill played hockey and cricket for an army unit and was a regular guest for a club in Eindhoven. There were regular exchanges between the two clubs saw their return to the U.K. and Tim Aldous (manager of Weavers Sports centre) contacted Val & Brian Chamberlain, and they invited Bill to play in a hockey tournament and that as they say was that Bills connection with Kettering Hockey Club began. While working on the county emergency teaching staff, Bill started boys hockey at several schools in the area and is quite proud of the number of his ex-pupils he still meets at matches. He was largely responsible for starting the Kettering Hockey festival and has arranged visits to tournaments in Belgium and Holland. He started the Waendel Walk and is one of only 3 British walkers to complete the Nijmegen event over 40 times. His triple heart bypass in 2009 slowed him down for a while, but nothing stops Bill and in the last four years he has played for the Midlands and England over 70 teams. Bill plays for K.H.C., Bill coaches at K.H.C. and Bill umpires for KHC. What more can we say WELL TRIALS FOR THE VERY FIRST OVER 75 MEN S TEAM WERE HELD RECENTLY BILL WAS SELECTED TO REPRESENT ENGLAND. Many congratulations from all of us at Kettering Hockey Club and our grateful thanks for all you do for our club. 4 MURDER MYSTERY EVENING Your Very Own Private Gore-Fest!! Saturday 30 th November the Clubhouse From 7.30 The Birthday Party Lovely, bubbly Emma Harper has been found dead on the patio of the Hay Barn Hotel, in Somersham, Cambridgeshire. Looks like she fell from the balcony of her room! She had been attending a party at the hotel to celebrate Mrs Pat Garton s 75 th birthday. BUT- did she fall? Was she pushed? Was she indeed a lovely innocent, or was she a scheming bitch who got what she deserved? IT S UP TO YOU TO FIND OUT!! Rules of the game Each table will act as a team, and will be allowed to interview each of the suspects in turn. After a break (for refreshments) each table will have another opportunity to grill (sorry, interview) each subject During the evening, additional forensic, CCTV or other tangible evidence will be presented to you. This may or may not be relevant! Innocent subjects will tell the truth. Guilty subject(s) may LIE LIKE DOGS If any of the subjects inadvertently misleads you, then the Detective Inspector will correct the matter with extreme prejudice... If you require clarification on any points of fact, then you may ask the detective Inspector (He s a softy, really) At the end of the evening, each table will fill out the answer sheet provided. The table that has the correct and most complete answer wins a Wonderful prize! (Would I lie?) Many thanks to all the actors from the Cytringan players performing this evening JUST FOR YOU!

If you can spare the odd 1 to sponsor Jan please contact her at jan_randle@yahoo.co.uk MEETINGS TO IMPROVE FACILITIES We have been in constant consultation with Kettering Borough Council, who own the Astro pitch and Parkwood Leisure who manage the facilities. Some improvements have taken place but the promised decontamination of the pitch to prevent clogging and flooding did not happen. This was obvious to one and all that saw the state of the pitch last Saturday and had their games postponed. We have voiced our concerns yet again and with some force. Contingency plans are now in place regarding our remaining pre-christmas fixtures. Home games on November 16 th & 23 rd will take place at Corby Business Academy, (changing rooms are available at CBA), with refreshments back at our clubhouse. This, hopefully, should give KBC and Parkwood Leisure time to sort out the pitch problems You will also be pleased to know that we are in regular communication with Bishop Stopford School who are looking into the possibility of building an Astro Pitch on their grounds. We have had numerous very profitable consultation meetings with them and are continuing to help them as we work towards our common goal On a much brighter note and talking of refreshments HOBSONS CHOICE Pegasus Court, near the Odeon cinema, Kettering is providing refreshments for all our home fixtures down at the Clubhouse. Many thanks to Mel & HOBSONS CHOICE. Hopefully all our teams will be having their Christmas bash at Hobsons Choice and having looked at the menu provided by 3 rd team captain Laura, I ve already booked my meal! In anticipation of taking on too many calories during Christmas particularly at HOBSONS CHOICE how about joining us at fitness sessions. Ricky is providing us with some challenging and interesting team building sessions and we re managing to get fit and have some good fun at the same time.
