2 HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION TWENTY-FOURTH ANNUAL TRACK & FIELD RECORD BOOK This twenty-fourth annual Southern California High School Track & Field ' record book is issued each year by Helms Athletic Foundation in the interest of high school athletics. It lists outstanding performances and records established by Southern California high school track and field athletes during the 1960 season. Five hundred record books are distributed by Helms Athletic Foundation each season without charge. Material gathered in this record booklet has been obtained from sources believed to be reliable. Information has been provided by high school coaches, sports editors of student newspapers, as well as from Southern California newspapers. This record book, as all other books of a similar nature, is prepared by Helms Athletic Foundation under the supervision of W.R. Bill Schroeder, Managing Director. It is distributed without charge to high schools, colleges, press, radio and television, athletic coaches and officials. Helms Athletic Foundation, with offices at Helms Hall, Los Angeles, is sponsored by Paul H. Helms, Jr. The Foundation was established in 1936, with one of its main functions that of recording the achievements of athletes in all sports and all divisions. This 24th annual Track and Field record book contains best marks of Los Angeles City and CIF track and field athletes over past years, past City and CIF Championship Teams and present City,State and National Interscholastic records. Track and Field Athletes of the Year are also listed for both Los Angeles City and CIF, selections which have been made by All-Southern California Board of Athletics since Names of all athletes selected as Athletes of the Year have their names engraved upon the Paul H, Helms Trophy, which is permanently lodged in Helms Hall, Los Angeles. HUBIE WATSON (JORDAN), RAY VAN ASTEN (BO- NITA), & BOB BONDS (RIVERSIDE) SELECTED AS TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES OF YEAR Three of Southern California's record breaking track and field athletes over the past 1960 season Hubie Watson, Ray Van Asten and Robert Bonds were named Athletes of the Year in Los Angeles City and CIF Track and Field when members of All-Southern California Board of Athletics made their annual selections. All three boys broke city, CIF and state meet records this season. This marks the second year in a row that Hubie Watson has been named Los Angeles Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Hubie set a city dash mark of 9.5w in 1959 and was a double winner at the State meet. This year, under the able tutelage of Norm Forster and Jesse Florse, Hubie set another city meet mark of 20,7 in the 220-yard-dash. This gives the Jordan flash both sprint marks in the Los Angeles City Meet record section. Co-Athletes of the Year were named in CIF track for Ray Van Asten of Bonita High School set a new CIF Southern Section Meet mark in the 880 of 1:53.0 and then set a State and National mark in the same race at Palo Alto when he dashed off a 1:51.9 to shatter Don Bowden's national mark of 1:52.3. Robert Bonds, Riverside Poly's all-around track and field star, won wide acclaim along with Van Asten. Bonds won both high and low hurdles in the Southern Section meet at Long Beach and then copped both events in the State meet with record clockings. Bonds' new state standards are 13.9 in the highs and 18.8 in the lows. Ray Van Asten is coached by Bob Hailey, while Robert Bonds received his coaching from Earl Marshall. Norm Forster and Jesse Flores have tutored Hubie Watson for the past three years. (1)
