2 HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PREP SCHOOL, 1948 TRACK AND FIELD RECORD ' This record of outstanding performances by Southern California's prep school track and field athletes, for the 1948 season, is the Twelfth Annual edition prepared and issued by Helms Athletic Foundation. The facts are records listed herein have been gathered from sources which are believed to be correct 9 Information has been supplied by prep school coaches, and it has also been compiled from Southern California newspapers. Helms Athletic Foundation is sponsored by Paul H. Helms of Los Angelesj with offices located at Helms Hall* One of the purposes of Helms Athletic Foundation is that of recording the achievements of Southern California's athletes and athletic teams, in all sports and in all divisions. This Southern California Prep School Track and Field Record, as are athletic record books of a similar nature, are prepared by Helms Athletic Foundation, under the supervision of W. R. Bill Schroeder, Managing Director, and are distributed to the Press, Radio, Schools, athletic officials, a nd others without charge. Special thanks is extended to Dick Banks, of Los Angeles, for his assistance in compiling information for this Track and Field Record such time and effort being donated. HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION, Helms Hall, Los Angeles 34, Calif. PICKARTS, BRADLEY, BUGBEE, FELL, AND CAMERON CHOSEN FOR HIGH HONORS Members of All Southern California Board of Track and Field Ralph Alexander, Los Angeles Examiner; Hugh Pinney, Los Angeles Herald-Express; Mory Kapp, Los Angeles Daily News; John de la Vega, Los Angeles Times; Bob Panella, Hollywood Citizen-News; Manny Pineda, Pasadena Star-News; Bill Whitney, Breitbard Athletic Foundation; Jack Tobin, Long Beach Press-Telegram; and Bill Schroeder, Helms Athletic Foundation, named five prepsters for Athlete of the Year honors in Delf Pickarts, San Bernardino Valley College javelin thrower^ was chosen Junior College Athlete of the Year. Pickarts accounted for one toss of 212 feet, 7 inches, in the Brigham Young Relays* An injured ankle kept Delf from competing in the Orange Empire and National Junior College meets, but he grabbed third place in the Senior A.A.U. Track and Field Championships, at Milwaukee. In 1947, Pickarts won the National A.A.U. Junior javelin throw title. In heaving the spear a distance of 212 feet, 7 inches, Delf Pickarts approached the National Junior College javelin throw record of 212 feet, 11 7/$ inches, set by Bob Likens, of Glendale Junior College, in Big Bob Cameron of Washington High School, Los Angeles, was named Los Angeles City High School Track a nd Field Athlete of the Year by the Helms Board Cameron earned the honors given to him, for he established a new National Inter sch:o..=i :; :...r. shot- put mark of 59 feet, 7 l/4 inches. This performance De^tered the previous mark

3 of 59 feet, 5 7/3 inches, made by John Helwig of Mt. Carmel High School, Los ^ngeles, in However, Darrow Hooper of Northside High School, Ft. Worth, Texas, recorded a mark of, 59 feet, 10 1/8 inches during the 194$ track and field season, so Cameron*s record will go down into the record books as a California Statemark, only. Bob Cameron, in addition to being a track and field weight man of State champion caliber, was one of the finest football players ^ in Los Angeles City High School ranks in 1947, being chosen for nil- City honors by Helms Athletic Foundation. Members of the Helms Athletic Foundation Board could not decide on a single prepster for Track and Field Athlete of the Year laurels^, : The result was that three, instead of one, were.cited^ Those who received the honors were Howard Bugbee of Redondo High School, Bill Fell of Compton High School, and John Bradley of Hoover High School of Glendale, nil were sprinters. ~ Redondo's Howard Bugbee was chosen for All-Southern California High School honors, for the 100-yard run, while Compton f s Bill Fell was likewise chosen. Glendale Hoover's John Bradley was selected for his 220-yard run achievements o Both'Bugbee and Fell recorded 9«6 second performances in-the 100- yard run, without the aid of wind, Bradley had an official 20.$ second clocking in the 220-yard scamper. Fell won the Southern California High School Meet 100-yard run 3 beating out Bugbee, but the latter reversed the tables in the Cali~ fornia State Meet.. Bradley was the 220-yard champ in both the Southern California, and State meets. John Bradley was chosen for nil-southern California High School honors in both sprints, the 100 and 220, a year ago, in 1947, and was also named Athlete of the Year. Those who have been chosen for Southern California Prep School Athlete of the Year honors, in Track and Field competition, in years past, follow: (Southern California C.I.F., Los-Angeles City High School, and Southern California Junior College Divisions.) He joins Corny Johnson, Compton College high jumper, who annexed his event in the 1936 Olympic Games. McMillen, Cathedral High School, in 1946 set a new State record for the mile in 4m. 24s. Bob ran the 880 and mile during the season and switched over to the steeplechase just one week before the National AAU Championships. In his first attempt, he won the Alhambra Games grind in 9m. 37.3s. The following week, he ran second to the veteran Forest Efaw in the AAU, thus qualifying for the finals tryouts. Efaw's time was 9m. 32.9s. A comparative unknown, McMillen won his Olympic berth by ten yards, defeating NCAA champion, Browning Ross from Villanova, the aging Joe McCluskey and Efaw, in 9m. 18.7s., although he had some trouble with the hurdles as he had never cleared one prior to his first steeplechase attempt. McMillen, in his third time out, had won the grueling event in which he had. never competed just three short weeks before.
