2 HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION FIFTEENTH ANNUAL (1951 EDITION) SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PREP SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD RECORD J his record book, listing the foremost performances by Southern J California y s high listingschool track and field athletes for the 1951 season, is.the fifteenth annual edition prepared and issued by Helms Athletic Foundation, in the interests of high school athletics, The facts and records listed herein have been gathered from sources which are believed to be authentic, Information has been pi.0- vided by high school coaches, and it has been compiled from InzcY Southern California newspapers. Helms Athletic Foundation, with offices in Helms Hall, Los Angeles 34, California, is sponsored by Paul H, Helms. The Foundation was established on October 15, One of the purposes of Helms Athletic Foundation is that of recording the achievements of athletes, and athletic teams in all sports and in all divisions. This Southern California Prep School Track and Field Record, as are all athletic record books of a similar nature, are prepared by Helms Athletic Foundation, ilnder the supervision of \{..R e Bill Schroeder, Nanaging Director, and zre distributed tc Schools, the Press, Radio, Television, Athletic Coaches and Officials, and others? wilhout charge. BOB CUNNING, CLARKE MERRILL CHOSEN TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES OF THE YEAR FOR 1951 Two California State Meet champions, Bob Cunning of Glendale Hoover High School, and Clarke Nerrill of Beh-ont High School, Los Angeles, were chosen for Helms Athletis Foundation - All-Southem Califcrnia Board of Track and Field Athlete of the Year honors for the 1951 season. Cunning was named Southern California C.I.F. High School Track & Field Athlete of the Year, ~jhile Iderrill was chosen Athlete of the Year in the Los Angeles City High School division, Cunning won first places in both the 100, and 220-yard rum in the Southern California C.I.F. Xcet, and came back a week later to capture the Califor~ia State 100-yard run, adsfinish second in the 220,* Cunning's best time for the 100 was 9.7, made in the State Meet, while his best clocking for the 220 was 21.2, mde in the Southern California Meet. Merrill soared over.the b2,r at 12 feet, 9 inches to nab the Los Angeles City Meet title, while he moved up to 13 feet to capture the California State Meet crown. Nerrill t s best vault'of the year, ho-cvever, came in the Northern League Meet, on May 4th, when he toppcd 13 feet, 3 inches. Cunning was coached by Victor Francy, who has won 3 Southern California C.1.F. titles, and tied for 1st in another, since Clarke Merrill's coach F.~S C. N. Iviullard, 1 _

Helms..Trophy which is lodged in Helms Aall, in the Prep School Hall of Fame section. Bob Cunning's name,hns also been engraved upon the Charles 1. Paddock Memorial.Trophy, and Clarke P'Ierrill f s name has been engrave? upon the Fred W. Kelly Trophy, both of which are lodged in Helms Ha^lo Cunning and Merrill were both the recipients of the Helms Athletic Foundation Athlete of the Ye.2r medal awards. Selection of Cunning and Morrill as Athletes of the Year was made by members of the Hshs Athletic Found~tion r s A11 Southern Cnlifornia Board of Athletics.
