8 Running Events: What are the running events for middle school track? Sprints: 100 meter dash 200 meter dash Middle Distance: 400 meter run Long Distance: 800 meter run 1600 meter run Relays: 4 x 100 meter Relay 4 x 200 meter Relay Medley Relay = 100m, 100m, 200m, 400m Hurdles: 75 meter 8
9 Field Events: What are the field events for middle school track? Jumps: High Jump Long Jump Triple Jump Throws: Disc Shot 9
10 Academic Eligibility: Each student must have passed five (5) of the seven (7) subjects the previous semester. 10
11 Required Forms: There are five (5) forms: Athletes must have the: 1. KSHSAA Physical Form must be turned in before the start of practice. The physical must be dated and signed by the physician after May 1, KSHSAA Concussion & Head Injury Release Form must be turned in before the start of practice. Other forms are due before the first meet. 3. Emergency Medical Insurance 4. Substance Abuse Guidelines 5. Transportation 11
12 State Regulations: The state regulations governing middle school track and field are as follows: Each athlete may participate in a maximum of seven (7) days of competition. Each athlete may participate in a maximum of four (4) events in any one (1) meet. Each athlete may participate in a maximum of two (2) events of 800 meters or longer. 12
13 Practice Philosophy: Practices are important, and we would appreciate your help in making sure your season is a successful one. You can help by being prompt, spending your time wisely at practice, and leaving at the correct time each day. 13
14 Practice Expectations: Behavior / Conduct / Commitment to the Squad 1. Each athlete must represent the school, track squad, and themselves with class. Coaches will handle unexpected behavior privately in a case by case and an individual basis. 2. Each athlete must be on time to every practice and not leave practice early unless excused. No one may leave a practice early without permission from a head coach. 3. Each athlete must attend every practice unless excused. 4. Each athlete must bring the proper attire to each practice (running shoes, spikes, running clothes, sweats, etc.) 14
15 Practice Expectations: Behavior / Conduct / Commitment to the Squad (continued) 5. Each athlete must help setting up putting away equipment. 6. Each athlete must compete in a minimum of two (2) up to a maximum of four (4) events. 7. Each athlete will compete in the events that the coaches feel will be most beneficial to the team, not necessarily in the events of the athlete s choosing. 8. Each athlete can lose the opportunity to participate in a meet due to unexcused absences or significant inappropriate behaviors. 15
16 Practice: What time does practice start? Practice starts at 3:00 in the gym each day. What time does practice stop? Practice ends at 4:45 each day. When should you be picked up? Between 4:45 and 5:00 each day you need to be picked up. When is the first day of practice? March 20 is the first day of practice. When is the last day of practice? Subject to change because of weather. What happens when you are scheduled to practice but it rains? Practice will be indoors and our departure time will be the regularly scheduled time. 16
17 Excused Absences: Does you calendar at home look like one of these? 17
18 Excused Absences: (continued) Athletes should review their academic and athletic schedules at the beginning of the season to determine if any conflicts exist. It is the responsibility of the athlete to communicate directly with their head coach. The athlete whose absence is excused will not be penalized and will be allowed to compete in their events. Athletes must provide a valid excuse for any and all absences, and when possible, provide a documented excuse (i.e. from parent/guardian). 18
19 Unexcused Absence(s): Unexcused absences are considered missing practice without notifying the coach prior to the start of practice. First Unexcused: Athlete is warned and parent/guardian is contacted. Second Unexcused: Athlete may not be permitted to participate in a meet. Third unexcused: Additional consequences and a conference will be scheduled to discuss the athlete s involvement in the track program. 19
20 Scheduling Conflicts: Who should you contact if you are unable to attend practice? Send an to your head coach ahead of time. 20
21 Injuries: Who should you contact if are injured? Send an to your head coach as soon as you can. Preferably early in morning. This way coaches can make adjustments before to the start of practice or meet. 21
22 Taking Care of Business (TCB): Athletes will comply with periodic grade checks and will be expected to attend TCB as needed. Athletes making F s or D s will be encouraged to go to TCB. Any other athlete wishing to go may do so. All athletes attending TCB must notify their coaches and head coach as soon as possible. Athletes will not be penalized for the time they are gone from track practice unless there are extenuating circumstances. 22
23 Detention(s): Athletes will behave properly throughout the school day. Discipline problems will result in suspension from competition(s) or removal from the squad. Any athlete receiving a school detention needs to inform the coach immediately. A detention is not a valid excuse for missing practice and will be dealt with on a case by case individual basis. 23
24 Practice Calendar: Make sure you receive a track practice calendar with important dates and times. Note: See separate sheet. Please try to make arrangements to be picked up at 4:45. Those who need to remain at school past 5:00 or who will need to stay late by appointment must talk to their head coach. 24
25 Picture Day: When is picture day? Picture day is scheduled Thursday, April 26. Note: Pictures will be by squad not the whole track team in one picture. 7 th Grade Boys 7 th Grade Girls 8 th Grade Boys 8 th Grade Girls What do you need to bring for picture day? Wear your track uniform. Bring your picture form and give only to the photographer. Do not give the picture form to any of the coaches. 25
26 Asthma: What should I do if I have asthma? Athletes are to carry and administer their own medications if the parent/guardian, health care provider, and school nurse so advise. 26
27 Spirit Wear: How can I purchase track t-shirts, shorts or hoodies? You can now purchase your items online in three (3) easy steps. 1. Go to the online store at and enter sale code: WWEJU 2. Choose you items and add them to your cart. 3. Securely checkout with your credit card. See flyer/order form This are available on the information table or they will be given to the athletes. 27

29 Uniforms: Check-out: The school will also provide a uniform for each athlete to wear at the meets. Clothing will be issued by number and each athlete will be responsible for turning in the correct clothing at the end of the season. Washing Instructions: Please wash uniforms with like colors only, using a stain stick as necessary. 29
30 Uniforms: (continued) You ve misplaced your uniform. What should you do? All lost uniforms will go to Boy s Locker-room. Check-in: Uniforms should be washed placed in a plastic bag with your first and last name on the outside of the plastic bag, and returned to one of the coaches at the uniform check-in. 30
31 Shoes: What kind of shoes should I wear? The school does not provide shoes. Specific shoes are not required, but certain types of shoes are preferred for various events. Sprinters, hurdlers and those in relays might choose a light weight running shoes or track spikes with quarter (¼) inch spikes. Distance runners and those in other events might prefer wear shoes with a wide base for balance. Note: To preventing lost shoes please write your first and last name inside the heel of both of your shoes so you can identify them should you misplace them. 31
32 Meet Expectations: 1. Each athlete must attend every meet. 2. Each athlete must bring the proper attire to each meet (running shoes, spikes, uniform, sweats etc.). Being a part of a team requires great commitment and sacrifice. Those who are not willing to sacrifice for the team will never be successful at what they undertake. All athletes are expected to conduct themselves with class and responsibility both on and off the track or field event area. 32
33 Meet Expectations: (continued) 3. Each athlete must remain at the meet until their events are finished. 4. Each athlete must check-out if not returning back on the bus. A sign-out sheet will be made available for parents to take their athletes. It will be located at the team s meeting spot. Please do not ask any of the coaches for permission to ride home with someone else other than your parent or legal guardian unless noted on the transportation form. 33
34 Track Meet Schedule: Make sure you receive a Track Meet Schedule with important dates and times. Note: Schedules will be handed out to your student-athlete as soon as it is available. Schedules are subject to changes throughout the season. 34
35 Track Meet Order of Events: All track meets begin with field events at 3:15. Running events usually begin at 3:30. Order of events will be as follows: 75m Hurdles 100m Dash 1600m Run 4x100m Relay 400m Run 4x200 Relay 800m Run 200m Dash Medley Relay 35
