She don t want to do it alone so decide to invite a few friends along. Before they can start training she decided to do their BMI. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a value calculated using a person s mass and height and is measured in kilograms per square metre (kg/m 2 ). This BMI value can then be used to determine the health status of the individual. The formula for calculating the BMI of an individual is: BMI (kg/m 2 ) = Use this formula to show how the BMI value of 23,7 kg/m 2 for a person with length 1,78 m and mass 75 kg was calculated. (2) Use the BMI formula to determine the height for a person with a mass of 58 kg and BMI of 24,1 kg/m 2. Round off your answer to two decimal places. (3) 2
3 1.3 The nursing sister at a clinic need to advise these two people about their weight status, particularly if they are overweight or obese, since their conditions may be a health risk. Use the information on the till slip and in the table below to work out the cost price for some of the ingredients for one batch of biscuits. For some ingredients you may need to first convert the ingredients to grams using the conversion table given below. (2) The Two Oceans Marathon is a running race that takes place on Easter Saturday each year in Cape Town. The event comprises two separate races, an ultra marathon and a half marathon The diagram comes from the race brochure. It shows the profile (side view) of the course for the ultra marathon. The top row of numbers indicates the height above sea level in metres at each point along the course, whilst the bottom row gives the course distances in kilometres. 4

(2) Runners measure speed in minutes and seconds per kilometre. Distance = Speed x Time 2.6 Your parents want to support you on the route. They decide that a good place to see you would be at Hout Bay. If you average 7 minutes per kilometre and the race begins at 06:30, at what time should they expect to see you running through Hout Bay? (5) [25] 5
6 QUESTION 3 Use ANNEXURE B which is a section of the Kruger National Park to answer the following questions: 3.1 Is the H2-2 road from Pretoriuskop to the H3 a tar road or a dirt road? (1) 3.2 What is the compass direction from Skukuza to Corcodile Bridge? (2) 3.3 On a 1: map, the measured distance between Lower-Sabie restcamp and Nkhulu picnic spot is 4,5 cm. What is the actual distance, in km, between the camp and the picnic spot? (3) 3.4 If the measured distance between Pretoriuskop and Skukuza is 3,3 cm and the actual distance is 50 km, what is the scale of the map? (Round off to the nearest hundred thousand).
