1 WELCOME Thank you for signing up as part of Team HEINEKEN for HEINEKEN Race to the Tower 2018, taking place on Saturday 9th to Sunday 10th June. The following information will provide you with all you need to know to make sure you re well prepared for the event and what to expect along the way. Please take the time to read it thoroughly and if you ve any questions once you ve read the document please We recommend bringing a print out of this document with you, however there will be Team HEINEKEN Volunteers available during the event to answer any questions. Contents: Agenda find out what s happening on each day The route get to know where you ll be walking Kit list what you need to bring and what we recommend you bring Emergency information AGENDA You can find confirmation of your start time and your travel and accommodation arrangements on your personalised itinerary issued at end of April. Here s a rough guide to what s happening over the weekend. Friday 9th June Team HEINEKEN are staying here: De Vere Cotswold Water Park - Lake 6, South Cerney GL7 5FP Check-in at the dedicated desk for Team HEINEKEN and pick up your pack which includes: Team HEINEKEN t-shirt, Team HEINEKEN wristband (which you should wear throughout the event) and room card. If you re not staying at the hotel you ll be given your t-shirt and wristband at race registration (see next page). Dinner for Team HEINEKEN is served from 8pm to 10:30pm in the Mallard suite. Get an early night s sleep for the big day. 1

2 Saturday 9 th June At the hotel: Breakfast for Team HEINEKEN FULL marathon participants is served from 5am in the main dining room. Half marathon should have finished breakfast There will be buses leaving the hotel at 6:30am and 7:00am to transport Team HEINEKEN to the start line of the race. - If you re starting at 8:15am you should leave on the 6:30am coach. - If you re starting at 8:45am you should leave on the 7:00am coach. - Half marathon start time is noon, so leave on the 10.30am coach. Where possible, if you ve indicated you re doing the event with others you should all have been given the same start time. It s your responsibility to get your own team together either at the hotel or at the start line. You must take all your belongings with you when you leave the hotel, and be ready to start the race. There are no changing rooms at the start line. At the start line FULL marathon - Bird in the Hand Farm, Main Road, Whiteshill, Stroud GL6 6JR: Head to the Team HEINEKEN registration desk. You ll need your confirmation or photo ID to register. You ll receive your race number (including your timing chip), race wristband and luggage label. If you did not stay at the hotel the night before you ll also receive your Team HEINEKEN t-shirts and Team HEINEKEN wristband, which you should wear throughout the event. Label your bag and make sure you put it on the relevant luggage truck, which will then be shuttled to either the base camp or the finish line depending on which package you ve signed up for. HALF marathon same as above but registration will be in the hotel and also at start line: Witcombe Estate, Witcombe Park, Great Witcombe, Gloucestershire GL3 4TT 2

3 Once registered, it s your responsibility to get to the start line at the correct time. There will be some concession stands offering food and drink at a cost at the start line. We recommend you bring some cash with you if you think you ll want to top up with some extra food. Along the route: All 52 miles of the route will be marked with large arrows and the majority of the route is also signposted as The Cotswold Way. There will be 7 pit stops on the full distance set up along the Cotswold Way. Each pit stop will have snacks (cereal bars, sandwiches, bananas, trail mix, chocolate, biscuits, etc.) drinks (tea, coffee, squash and water please have your own cup for drinks see kit list for collapsible cup), toilets and first aid facilities. Exact distances to each pit stop will be communicated closer to the event date. The Cotswold Way is part on the National Trail therefore please ensure that you keep hold of any rubbish until the next pit stop where there will be plenty of bins. Please do not arrange to meet friends and family at the pit stops as they can become very crowded if each participant has 4 supporters there as well. Instead we recommend they meet you at the base camp (which is also pit stop 4). Through the night: If you re doing the double marathon non-stop and continuing on the route throughout the night, please make sure you do this as part of a group of at least two. Make sure that you have a head torch on at all times. There will be pit stops throughout the night. However, each pit stop will have a specific opening and closing time that needs to be adhered to exact timings will be communicated closer to the event date. There are a number of tents at the finish line for participants who finish during the night/early hours of Sunday morning. 3

4 At base camp (Colgate Farm, Ham Road, Charlton Kings, Cheltenham GL54 4EZ): There will be a cold Heineken 0.0 waiting for all participants when they reach base camp. When you arrive at base camp you ll need to check in at the tent concierge. Here you ll collect your belongings (that you left at the start line) and your inflatable sleeping mat. Tents are not pre-allocated to groups, however, if you arrive at base camp together, where possible your tents will be next to each other. Facilities available at base camp are: - Toilets - Hot showers - Massage & stretch area - Medical tent - Catering tent - Bar & chill out area - Coffee & snack stand Everyone can book a free 10 minute massage. There will be some yoga mats available for stretching. The medical tent will be open until 10pm on the Saturday and from 5:30am 7:30am on the Sunday morning. Food will be served in the catering tent from 6pm to 9pm. - There will be a variety of hot foods on offer, e.g. soups and pasta, as well as salads, fresh fruit and sweet bites. - Unlimited water, squash, tea and coffee will be available. - There are plug sockets in the catering tent to charge items as you eat. We recommend labelling your belonging and not to bring ipads/laptops. There is no public Wi-Fi network, however, 3G/4G network coverage should work. There will be a bar serving a variety of our ciders and beers, along with wine and soft drinks, until 10pm. 4

5 - For Team HEINEKEN all drinks are free but you must be wearing your Team HEINEKEN wristband so that bar staff can identify you. - Heineken 0.0 will be free of charge for all participants. - You can also buy soft drinks and various snacks from the coffee & snack stand at a cost. We recommend you bring some cash with you for this. - There will be a TV screen with entertainment. Base camp is along the route itself. Participants who are NOT camping are free to stop off at base camp to re-fuel with food and drink before heading off on the second half of the route. Non-camping participants must be off site by 9pm. Sunday 10th June At base camp Breakfast will be served at 6:00am in the catering tent and includes: - Full English (bacon, sausages, eggs, beans, tomatoes and mushrooms) - Hot porridge - Fruit - Bread and spreads - Cereal and granola - Croissants - Tea, coffee and juice It s your responsibility to get yourself ready for day 2. For FULL marathon participants, you can begin day 2 from 6am and must leave base camp by 7am. For HALF marathon participants, you will board a coach at 8am to take you to your start line. For anyone not participating on Sunday, a coach will depart base camp at 9am to take everyone to the finish line. Please do not leave anything in or around your tent, and leave the area as you found it. Before you leave base camp, remember to drop your belongings off at the tent concierge and they will be taken to the finish line. At the finish line (Broadway Tower Broadway, WR12 7LB) There will be a cold Heineken 0.0 waiting for all participants as they cross the finish line. 5

6 There will be an area at the finish line for you to meet friends/family and relax before beginning your journey home. There will be a bar serving a variety of our ciders and beers with some entertainment going on throughout the day. For Team HEINEKEN all drinks are free but you must be wearing your Team HEINEKEN wristband so that bar staff can identify you. There will be a refresh station, toilet facilities and a number of concessions stalls offering food and drink at a cost. We recommend you bring some cash with you for this. Don t forget to collect your belongings at the finish line. THE ROUTE From Gloucestershire to Worcestershire, the Cotswold Way is stunning. You ll pass through some of England s most charming stone built villages, via Winchcombe and Painswick. The yellow Jurassic, Cotswold Stone will pave the way for your challenge ahead, look out for landmarks like Hailes Abbey, Sudeley Castle before the epic finish at the foot of Broadway Tower. 7 KIT LIST What you need to bring Print out of this document and your confirmation Photo ID Waterproof bag Waterproof jacket Warm top and spare change of clothes for base camp and when you finish (including comfy shoes/flip flops) Sun cream A fully charged mobile phone with your emergency contact saved under NOK (next of kin) At least 750ml of water in a refillable water bottle (you can top this up at pit stops along the route and at base camp) Light snacks (e.g. cereal bars, chocolate, fruit and nuts) Head torch and spare batteries A collapsible cup for drinks at pit stops and bars Sleeping bag Wash bag and toiletries Quick dry towel What we recommend you bring There will be plenty of food and drink provided along the route and at base camp. However, there will be concession stands at the start line, base camp and finish line offering additional snacks and drink options at a cost. If you think you ll want additional food and drink then please bring some cash with you (cards will not be accepted). We will try to make you as comfortable as possible at base camp however, we do recommend you bring the following: - Eye mask - Ear plugs - Inflatable travel pillow - Tissues/baby wipes/toilet roll 7

8 No matter how fit you are, Race to the Tower will hurt at times. You ll be responsible for your own first aid. There will be emergency medical care available at all times during the event, however this is not intended to provide basic first aid. Therefore, we recommend you bring the following: - Paracetamol - Fabric plasters - Vaseline - Compeed blister plasters - Ioperamide (Imodium) - Hand sanitiser EMERGENCY CONTACTS If you have an accident along the route, get lost or need to withdraw from the event, you should call EVENT CONTROL. The emergency number for EVENT CONTROL will be printed on the back of your race number.
