1 Report of works Bavaria 36 Reference: R1017/17 Nicholas Hardy B.Eng The Firs, Bridetown Hill. Totnes. Devon. TQ9 5BH The inspections, conducted over 4 visits while the vessel was at Baltic Wharf Repairs undergoing work to repair damage to the keel matrix highlighted in a report by Blue Peninsula Marine Ltd. The inspection was carried out on the instructions of The inspection was conducted for the purposes of an independent and professional overview of works carried out The vessel is a Bavaria 36 Cruiser built By Bavaria Yachts.

BUILDER BAVARIA YACHTS, GERMANY The obtained particulars are from a number of sources and have not been checked for accuracy, and therefore cannot be guaranteed. The vessel was viewed on four occasions, at appropriate stages of the work being carried out. 1. Assessment of damage having removed keel. 2. Preparation of surfaces. 3. Post making good the repair. 4. Refitting of keel. At each visit photos were taken to evidence progress and notes of additional assessment made. 1. Assessment of damage having removed keel, June a. The keel had been bed down on now hard and brittle compound, that once any movement occurred at the keel to hull join would no longer provide a waterproof seal. b. Two keel bolts presented signs of thread damage, when the nuts were looked at they showed signs of overtightening, the pairs of nuts were friction welded together requiring a cold chisel to part them. c. Surface damage in the area highlighted by the Blue Peninsula Marine Ltd were as stated small cracks in the flow-coat finish in the keel matrix near limber holes d. Externally the removal of the keel had damaged the laminate around the keel bolts holes were the bonding paste had filled the oversize holes. The bedding compound was up to 10mm thick at the forward and aft end reducing to a minimum in the central section, voids were noted in the bedding compound. 1

3 2. Preparation of surfaces, June a. The internal area between the transverse frames of the keel matrix were gel stripped and the damaged areas cleaned back to sound material. b. The area was then checked visually and hammer sounding by myself. c. Some small additional areas were marked up that required more preparation and noted to the tradesman carrying out the work. 3. Post making good the repair, June a. The repair was carried out on the 16 th June, completed by the 21 st June. b. The weather over this period was dry with temperatures of 20 o + and 11 o + day and night. c. 10 and 12 layers of alternate Chopped strand and + /-45 biaxial fabric was laminated from the vertical face of the transverse frames to the interior hull shell replacing the material removed to a thickness of 8-10 mm. d. Resin details; Euro Resin, HSC Synolite 6060-P1. Batch Number e. The exterior of the hull had been cleaned back and sanded smooth, damaged laminate had been removed and filled using Silica and fibres and in areas of deeper laminate damage Biaxial cloth had been used to bring to a level suitable for filling. These areas were then hammer sounded by the tradesman and myself to check for integrity and further voiding. 4. Refitting of Keel, June a. Having recut and cleaned the threads, using new nuts the keel was re-fit. b. Spacers (approx. 2mm) were put on each stud and a generous quantity of Saba 780 was gunned on to the mating surface of the keel. c. The vessel was then lowered to the keel and held approximately 2-5mm off. d. The nuts were tightened to 60% recommended torque, the vessel was rested on to the keel during this process, whilst still in the slings. e. It was then moved to a shore cradle and left for two & half hours before the nuts were tighten to the full torque required. f. This process was recorded by the yard on their in-house paper work, and a copy sent to Liberty yachts and myself. 2

This report is a true and accurate description of the vessel so far as could be ascertained at the time of survey, but no guarantee is given or implied. I have not inspected woodwork or other parts of the structure which are covered, unexposed, or inaccessible and I am therefore unable to report that any such part is free from defect.
