1 AB Volvo Penta Press Information Going to extremes for the Volvo Ocean Race with Volvo Penta s D2-75 engine As the action for the Volvo Ocean Race gets underway, Volvo Penta s D2-75 engines are ready for a tough challenge. Each Volvo Ocean 65 boat in the race is equipped with a robust Volvo Penta D2-75 engine. As the heart of the yacht, the D2-75 engine provides on board power throughout the race, under the toughest of conditions. The teams rely on the engine to deliver power onboard throughout their epic adventure. The seven participating teams will circumnavigate the globe for nearly nine months, in arduous conditions and all weathers. The racing boats and engines are the same as for the race, but this time they will need to cover an extra 7,000 nautical miles, thanks to a change in the route.

2 2 The main stress to the engines comes from the enormous G-forces induced by the very high speeds and violent motions of these race boats, says Jan Dahlsten, manager of technical support and product delivery to Volvo Ocean Race. These forces sometimes correspond to those that military aircraft are exposed to. This is far above what sailboats and engines normally have to cope with. Ultimate test of man versus nature The Volvo Ocean Race is known as one of the world s toughest sporting competitions. It is regarded by many as the ultimate test of man-versus-nature. Physical and mental endurance, teamwork, and sophisticated engineering all have to unite successfully in order to utilize and overcome the powerful forces of the elements. The teams will cover 45,000 nautical miles to complete the race. When racing at sea, the boats go to extremely remote places where there is no help available to places where even helicopters cannot reach so it s paramount that the engine is completely reliable, says Dahlsten. When they are in the middle of the Southern Ocean, the closest object to them is the International Space Station, so the crews have to have absolute confidence in the engine. The engine is certainly at the heart of the yacht, and is integral to this incredible adventure. Precision maneuverability The 66ft (20.37m) Volvo Ocean 65 has a weight of 12.5 tons, a rig height of 99.4ft (30.3m), and water ballast of 1,900 liters. The boats often operate at high speeds, where precision maneuverability is critical in all conditions. This is the sixth time that Volvo Penta has supplied engines to the Volvo Ocean Race, and the D2-75 with Saildrive was again selected to power the vessels for the edition, because it combines high performance, a compact design, and, above all, reliability. It provides both propulsion and auxiliary power: Propulsion is needed to maneuver the boats in and out of harbors, for transportation between venues when there is no wind, and, most importantly, for emergencies; while auxiliary power is needed for all onboard electrical requirements, including the communication equipment, computers, lights, heating, hydraulic system that operates the canting keel, and for the water-maker that converts salt water into safe drinking water for the crew. The canting keel is made of a high-strength steel alloy fin and a 3.5 tonnes lead bulb at the end, hinged on the bottom of the hull with a lever into the boat and two large hydraulic cylinders that operate it. It swings sideways +/-40 degrees to increase the stability of the boat. The Keel Hydraulic system uses a lot of power, says Dahlsten. And the canting keel stabilizes the boat enormously, so it can carry a bigger sail and race a lot faster. The power of the D2-75 makes for fast movements of the keel in the intense In-Port races. Dee Caffari is the skipper of one of the seven teams competing, called Turn the Tide on Plastic. These boats are harnessing the power of nature, but to keep all the systems running you need power, and you need energy. You need the reliability in the harshest of conditions and the Volvo Penta engine is key to that. 3 3 Reliability in all conditions Volvo Penta s D2-75 diesel engine is ideal for sailboats, producing minimal noise and vibration. This engine is proven to be strong, robust and very reliable, says Alexandra Range, product manager for the D1 and D2 engine range at Volvo Penta. It provides enough power at low rpm for normal propulsion, and so it gives spare capacity to power extra alternators, if necessary. The sailboats it s usually installed in, of feet, use a lot of electrical equipment for onboard comfort, such as TVs, air conditioning, and cooking, and the D2-75 is well suited to deliver the electrical power needed. If it can be used in extreme conditions for the Volvo Ocean Race, then customers in normal sea conditions can be certain that it will work well for them. Image captions: Ends. 1. 4 AB Volvo Penta Press Information Volvo Penta delivers worldwide engineering expertise for the Volvo Ocean Race Volvo Penta s Johannes Karlsson will be a busy man for the next eight months. He is the technical support engineer for the Volvo Ocean Race delivering both on-site and oncall engine expertise and support to the sailing teams. As an official supplier to the Volvo Ocean Race , Volvo Penta is providing D2-75 engines on the Volvo Ocean 65 boats, gasoline sterndrives for the team support RIBs used in the host cities, as well as power for the Volvo Pavilion. Johannes Karlsson, is responsible for making sure all these systems are in perfect working order for the duration of the competition more than eight months. It s a big task, but it s exciting too, said Karlsson. I naturally tend to be drawn to adventures and challenges where there is a need to fix and repair things. There is a satisfaction in knowing I have found a solution. Karlsson is a key part of The Boatyard, a one-stop mobile shop that travels to each stopover location. The Boatyard is staffed by 50 technical experts and fully stocked with spares and tools to provide consistent levels of maintenance and repairs for the systems on all the racing boats, including electronics, rigging and sails, as well as the engines. It s fantastic to be back on the race, said Karlsson, who previously worked on the and and editions. We didn t have The Boatyard concept on my last Volvo Ocean Race, but now it s a really professional service. I have to work as quickly as possible, as it s such a time-sensitive competition, he said. If something is going to take a long time to fix, then it can be quicker to swap the entire engine for a new one and later repair the one that s been taken out so that the teams can use their boats again immediately.

5 2 He can also call on the expertise of Volvo Penta s global dealer network to provide additional support as needed. Before each stopover, I get reports from the teams so I know what likely needs to be done, he added. I also do a thorough inspection from a specific check-list before the in-port races, and then make any repairs that are needed. In Auckland there will be a three-week stopover, so I have scheduled a full service of each engine package there. Reliability at sea and on land Prior to the start of the race, Karlsson conducted engine safety training sessions for the teams on-board mechanics, showing them how to work with the engine and related parts if anything should go wrong at sea. This included addressing different scenarios, such as how to manage an emergency start of the engine, what to do if there is water in the engine or issues with low fuel, how to fix loose propellers and how to bleed the engine. Karlsson has a stock of extra engine parts on hand ashore, but each team is also required to carry an identical supply of spare parts on board, including: a fuel filter, bolt (actuator replacement), alternator belt, bleed screw, 15W40 oil, a feed pump, starter motor, speed sensor, MDI unit, start button panel, impeller and jump starter. As the boat and engine are the same as for the race, we have a pretty trouble-free process, but we have to consider things such as the effect of the G-forces in tough conditions on the engines, and the individual habits of the teams, said Karlsson. We have an extremely robust and reliable engine package. And our engine is backed by the strength of our worldwide service and support. What we deliver for the race is similar to what we deliver every day through our global Volvo Penta dealer network. On a daily basis, many of our customers use their boats in extreme conditions or remote locations, relying on quick access to parts and service. 6 3 Globetrotting adventure During the race, Karlsson will be lucky to get back to his home in for a brief visit. I am used to the travel, and it s an adventure to be part of such a huge event, he said. Sometimes I get the chance to see a bit of the cities on the route, but I have to be available to work at all times. It s particularly exciting to see the In-Port races, when I help the race management team, so I am on the water in the middle of the action. With thousands of people set to enter the Volvo Pavilion each day during the Volvo Ocean Race, Volvo Penta is delivering the power required for the activities taking place in Volvo s onshore hospitality and exhibition area in the Race Village. Totally redesigned for the race, the Volvo Pavilion is a high-tech temporary structure in the race village where visitors can find out more about the race and engage with the Volvo brand, including Volvo Penta, Volvo Construction Equipment, Volvo Buses, Volvo Trucks, and Volvo Cars. Customers and the general public will be able to discover new information and have fun in the interactive areas designed to showcase the Volvo brand. The pavilion also hosts fully equipped conference facilities and hospitality areas, including a restaurant. It provides a unique opportunity for Volvo Penta to build relationships and demonstrate its commitment to sustainability in the marine leisure segment. The heart that never stops The creation of the 300-meter² Volvo Pavilion is a logistical challenge, requiring a project team to build the premises, and fit out the internal space with the physical and electrical requirements. It is built to a tight schedule, and takes around five days to disassemble once the Race Village has closed. Due to the timescale of the opening and closing of the race villages in each of the 12 host cities, there are three pavilions that will be used in rotation on the

8 2 international route. During the Volvo Ocean Race, it is estimated that almost two and a half million people visited the Volvo Pavilion. In fact, the Volvo Ocean Race lies third in the most visited sporting events in the world behind only the Olympics and World Cup. It is a real logistical challenge to get everything built quickly and properly, says Joakim Valfridsson, director of production for the Volvo Pavilion. We have focused more on flexibility this time, and raising the level of facilities to a premium level. Volvo Penta s engines are the heart that never stops, as they need to provide power for the entire Volvo Pavilion. Providing the best experience for visitors Volvo Penta has supplied a TAD1651GE power generation engines to produce electricity, for the Volvo Pavilion. The pavilion needs around 300 kw to meet the needs of all the electrical appliances, and the engine provide more than enough power, with a combined output exceeding 400 kw. The output of these high capacity units is equal to the power consumption of 30 private homes. The TAD1651GE is a compact, powerful, reliable and economical unit that is easy to install, has an efficient and compact cooling system, and offers low noise and emissions. It is switchable between 50 Hz/1500 rpm and 60 Hz/1800 rpm, making it available for use anywhere in the world. And it complies with emissions stages US EPA Tier 3 and EU Stage 3A at 1500 rpm, and US EPA Tier 2 at 1800 rpm. Gensets are an ideal choice for an environment such as the Volvo Pavilion, where a lot of electricity is required in a temporary location that does not have main supply, says Giorgio Paris, senior vice president of the industrial segment at Volvo Penta. 10 AB Volvo Penta Press Information Volvo Penta engines ready for another lap around the world in the Volvo Ocean Race For the sixth time, Volvo Penta is an official supplier to the Volvo Ocean Race, providing the Volvo Ocean 65 sailing boats with a D2-75 engine with Saildrive, handson engine maintenance and support, as well additional power during the race stopovers. Designed for the toughest of conditions, the Volvo Penta D2-75 engines have already done one lap around the world, covering approximately 39,000 nautical miles during the Volvo Ocean Race. Thanks to having one boat design for two race editions, the Volvo Ocean 65 boats and Volvo Penta engines from will race around the world for a second lap of 46,000 nautical miles, once again prepared to meet some of the toughest challenges in round-the-world sailing. The Volvo Ocean 65 boats often operate at high speeds, where extreme maneuverability is critical in all conditions. The conditions of the Volvo Ocean Race are extreme and not only push the boats and sailing crew to the limit, but also, all the equipment, commented Mark Turner, CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race. 11 2 These boats have been built for two editions of the race and we have so much faith in the condition of the engines that we have not replaced them; we are confident they are up for a second trip around the world. Reliable power source at sea Each of the Volvo Ocean 65 boats will be equipped with one D2-75 engine for both auxiliary and propulsion needs. The engine is there when needed as a primary propulsion source for safe navigation in and out of harbors, as well as a potential lifesaving instrument in case of an emergency. During the actual race, the gearboxes are sealed, but the engine is used to power the boats total demand for electricity for computers, navigation equipment, lights and communication units onboard. Additionally, the engine provides power to the batteries to run the water maker, which converts salt water into drinking water. The engine delivers the onboard energy required through two, 24 volt alternators, which stores the energy in two lithium ion batteries. It also supplies the power to the hydraulic system for the canting keel. The canting keel, which provides extra counterweight when sailing, is moved by hydraulic cylinders which are powered by an engine-driven, hydraulic pump. 12 3 The engine is critical 100% of the time. It is the main source of power onboard, which converts energy for which the teams rely upon to survive. They depend on the engine to deliver drinking water, which is essential when the teams are sailing for weeks at a time. An expanded supplier role Volvo Penta supplies more than just the engine onboard. 14 AB Volvo Penta Press Information Volvo Penta s next generation gasoline engines power RIBs in the Volvo Ocean Race Volvo Penta s V6-280 engine is powering the sailing teams RIBs in the Volvo Ocean Race A highly efficient low-emission gasoline engine by Volvo Penta has been selected to power the rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) for use in the Volvo Ocean Race The next generation V6-280 sterndrive has been chosen as it provides excellent power and maneuverability, and low emissions. It is the cleanest engine available on the market in the gasoline segment. There are compelling environmental reasons for selecting this engine, says Jan Dahlsten, manager of technical support and product delivery for the Volvo Ocean Race. It s a modern engine that is strong and responsive, and at the same time offers class-leading low emissions. The RIBs are used by each of the seven teams in the competition, to transport crew, equipment and guests from the Race Village ports to the guest sailing catamarans. Every team has two RIBs and each boat is used in an alternate port, so that the teams guest sailing activities can be carried out quickly at the stopovers on the route around the world. Next generation efficiency The V6-280 DPS aquamatic sterndrive is an integrated package comprised of a 6-cylinder, 4.3-liter, freshwater-cooled engine and duoprop twin counter-rotating propellers. The compact and lightweight unit has two catalytic converters, direct fuel injection, and variable valve timing, to ensure high fuel efficiency and optimum power and low emissions throughout the whole operating range. It provides excellent handling and impressive acceleration, and

15 2 hydrocarbon (HC²) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions are around 90 per cent lower than a typical outboard engine. For the Volvo Ocean Race, the RIBs are also equipped with Volvo Penta s electronic vessel control (EVC; a complete system from helm to prop which links engines with functional controls and software), and Glass Cockpit (a system that integrates operational and monitoring controls in one customizable screen interface). As an integrated package, it s highly efficient and makes driving safe, predictable and fun, while minimizing the environmental footprint, says Dahlsten. With our EVC system and the electric throttle, operating the boat is smooth and easy. And the Glass Cockpit System s navigational screens contribute to a clean, uncluttered helm station. Fletch Kennedy, technical shore manager for the Turn the Tide on Plastic team, says: The RIB is nicely designed with good aesthetics. It carries a lot of people and still provides a comfortable experience for the guests we have onboard.
