1 Atmospheric dynamics and meteorology B. Legras, II Potential vorticity, tropopause and baroclinic instability (supposed to be known: notions on the conservation of potential vorticity, simple model of the baroclinic instability (Eady / Phillips)) Recommended documents: - Hoskins, McIntyre & Robertson, 1985, On the use and significance of isentropic potential vorticity maps, Quart. J. Met. Soc., 111,

16 Amplification of a PV anomaly by mutual advection The warm surface anomalies acts as positive PV anomalies near the surface PV anomalies induce a flow in the same way an electric charge induces an electric field. The vertical penetration and the magnitude of the flow induced by a PV anomaly grow with its horizontal scale. The flows induced by PV anomalies can be approximately superimposed The induced flows can generate mutual amplification if the positions of the two anomalies are shifted with the upper one on the west of the lower one and if they get locked. meridional PV gradient at the tropopause UPPER-LEVEL +PV ADVECTED OVER A LOW PV +v REGION PV =0 LEVEL CAN LEAD TO topbaroclinic h t y MOIST PROCESSES MUTUAL AMPLIFICATION. 23 Simplified Phillips layer model (3) β( K + S ) Dispersion relation c=u m + ±δ K ( K + S ) β S S K with δ = 4 U T K ( K + S ) K + S a) U T =0, in this case c is real (pure propagation) with possible values β β c 1=U m (external mode) and c =U m (internal mode) K K + S b) β=0, in this case c=u m±u T ( K S K + S 1/ ) Instability occurs for K < S c) general case, the instability threshold δ=0 is then given by ( 1/ ) K4 β =1± 1 S 4S UT Notice that β produces a stabilizing effect With U T =4 m s 1 between 750 and 50 hpa. Most unstable mode: K =1/ 4000 km 3 S UT unstable stable 1 K S
24 Simplified Phillips layer model (4) The basic flow vorticity is Q 3 =β y+s y (U 3 U 1 ) Q 1 =β y+s y (U 1 U 3 ) Knowing that U 1<U 3, the necessary instability condition on the potential vorticity gradients is Q1 Q3 <0< y y that is S (U 1 U 3 ) < β < S (U 3 U 1 ) S UT or in other words >1 β This is identical to the instability criterion established in the previous slides Since the wind is uniform over each level, the gradient is only due to the planetary vorticity and the thermal structure. 4
