1 Boat review Integrity 380 Sedan takeyourlei Taking it slow is the way to go with the new Integrity 380, a large volume, trawler-style, solid GRP displacement cruiser built in China with plenty of input from Downunder. Australian Brett Flanagan is the driving force behind the Integrity launches sold in this part of the world. His interior makeovers have transformed solid but otherwise unremarkable displacement trawlers into modern, spacious cruisers with layouts tailor-made for boating Downunder. The latest is the Integrity 380 Sedan, a model that s making a splash across the Tasman and in the Chinese boatbuilder s biggest export market, Thailand. The 380 is a development of Integrity s earlier 330/340 model, but it s longer and beamier with twocabin accommodation with heads arrangement. Laurie Collins Marine Brokers Ltd is the agent for Integrity Motoryachts in New Zealand and the company has had considerable input into the equipment and layout of boats sold here. Easy living With the Integrity 380 Sedan s comfortable cruise speed of 8 knots and a maximum of just over 10, you need to enjoy the journey as much as the destination. And there s no reason why you shouldn t: step aboard the 380 s wide cockpit into single-level teak decks that merge the cockpit and saloon; with the drop covers zipped up it becomes a vast, warm, all-weather space. Boarding access is either over the solid teak grating of the wide swim platform and through the transom door on the starboard side, or via walk-around side decks where sections of the railing telescope into themselves allowing step-on, step-off 102 Boating New Zealand September 2013

The sedan roof extends all the way to the transom, protecting cockpit occupants from sun and rain, especially with the drop covers snugged down. These were fitted in New Zealand and Laurie Collins principal Wayne Baston is extremely happy with them. With the covers down, the cockpit is completely protected from the elements, which means it can be opened to the saloon in all weather, but on a nice day they re easy to roll up out of the way letting the outside in, says Baston. Being mostly clear plastic rather than canvas, they let in the light and the views. Dual-cycle air-conditioning keeps the boat cosy in winter and cool in summer, extending the boating season. The extra length compared to the 330 has mostly gone into the cockpit, which is a good size with a full-width lazarette under the sole for stowage, plus access to the fuel tanks and sternthruster battery. Half-height cockpit gunwales are topped by teak railings while the hawse holes and heavy-duty bollards give the boat a shippy look that sits well with its traditional lines. A wraparound settee and cockpit table dominate the cockpit. A staple-style swim platform railing can accommodate a BBQ, bait table or support a dinghy tender. The salient feature of the saloon layout is its openness. Large hopper windows and sliding stainless steel and glass door aft provide uninterrupted communication between the saloon and cockpit. With a large, twin-sink, all electric galley on the starboard side, it feels light and airy despite acres of teak, thanks to Integrity s choice of light-coloured vinyl ceiling panels, upholstery and L-shaped Corian counter tops plus the daylight flooding in from the cockpit and through the large windows. The side windows slide open; there s a sliding helm door to side deck for quick access to the bow, and a Bomar ceiling hatch for ventilation and light. Down the companionway the dark wood becomes more noticeable, along with the rich, patterned fabrics on the beds. Accommodation comprises an island double-berth master cabin in the bows and a double guest cabin to port ideal for two couples. The saloon and cockpit tables can be lowered and in-filled with squabs to provide two more double berths taking accommodation to eight if required. Getting around the Integrity 380 is a piece of cake, as is stepping on and off thanks to the opening side rails. ZF cable controls and hydraulic steering are standard features. The boat tracks well and steering effort is minimal: a large rudder ensures a useful turning radius, even at slow speed. The helm console has been rearranged for this boat, a big improvement as is the fascia material. We motored out to Motuihe Island and back at 1800rpm, making around 8 knots depending on the tide. It was a relaxed cruise, watching the islands slide steadily by and then anchoring for lunch in the bay. The Quick windlass made easy work of raising and lowering the pick. Underway and at anchor, this boat feels spacious, solid and safe. On a boat like the Integrity 380, the weekend/holiday begins as soon as you cast off the lines. It has all the comforts required to enjoy the journey, and whenever a big planing launch goes past, you can consider their fuel bill compared to yours. Conclusion Designed for ease of handling and well equipped for extended cruises, living aboard and even charter work, it s a sensible choice for older boaters, and others seeking a boating lifestyle that doesn t cost the earth and has reasonable fuel bills. With its downunder spec and friendly layout, this model is selling well in Australia and the team at Laurie Collins expect it to do well in New Zealand. Application check The John Deere 225hp turbodiesel engine in this boat was installed in Hong Kong and received a comprehensive application check by The Engine Room, the local John Deere agent based on Auckland s North Shore, to meet warranty requirements. This is the usual practice for imported boats with engines supported by New Zealand agencies/importers. They normally perform this service free of charge on engines they ve supplied themselves, but charge a fee to check over the engines of new imported boats. The Engine Room technician Andy Winter explains the process: We do a comprehensive series of checks to ensure an engine has been installed correctly and that it performs to the manufacturer s specification. These include measuring the pipes and hoses water, air and fuel ensuring they re properly secured, checking the battery cables for length and thickness, and ensuring any bolt-on bits and ancillary equipment is properly fitted. The Engine Room sea-trials the motor, running it up to operating revolutions and checking the oil temperature, fuel flow, exhaust back pressure and the differential temperature between the engine room and the outside air. They ensure the engine reaches its recommended maximum revolutions that it s not over or under-loaded and that all the vital signs are within the parameters set by the factory. When Winter is satisfied, he signs it off and validates the warranty.
