3 CMCS Chowder Chatter March, 2019 Page 3 Commodore s Message Commodore Jason Pim FebWOOary was fun, right?! Four consecutive Saturday races with nice weather, and one of our signature events, the EPOL Oyster Fest! Our friends at Salty Sam's and Legacy Harbour keep rolling out the red carpet and stepping up their hospitality. Spending time with friends on and near the water is something to be very thankful for and this past month did not disappoint! Trivia question -- who's the last CMCS Commodore to work a fore-deck in the spinnaker class during a Commodore's Cup Regatta? Club Historian...your move. Speaking of racing, the first event in March is a distance race, Naples to Fort Myers. This should be the kinda of race a lot of our club members' boats and crews are built for - hope to see you out there! March is probably one of my favorite months to be on the water. Typically some better breezes with little rain and few bugs, make for one of the best times to be at Pelican Bay (our March cruise). Then, an event of steep cultural significance and local lore -- Rum and Reading, where we spend time testing spirits and celebrating lifetime club member Robert Macomber's new book launch! Back ashore we have two great get-togethers coming up. That's the March Shrimp Fest and April's Grill Night at Edison Sailing Center. These are fun social events that are also enjoyable to serve at -- we would love to see some new volunteers contact Liberty Ashore to help out! 3 I hope you all are already noting the conscious effort to ramp up our partnership with Edison Sailing Center, and can help us in this important endeavor. Working together with ESC in the community is truly how we can ensure a bright future for the sport of sailing and our club here in Southwest Florida. Following Grill Night, there should be an opportunity to volunteer at ESC for the Big Calusa in April, as well as their July trip to the Tortugas which we are seeking boats and captains for! Jason Pim Commodore P.S. Please check out Deedee's call to action on public input towards Lake Okeechobee's future management. We have a rare opportunity to provide input to the Army Corps and we must make the most of it between now and March 31st!

4 4 CMCS Chowder Chatter March, 2019 Page 4 Vice Commodore of Summerset Report Vice Commodore of Summerset Allen Fiske This time of year is pretty quiet in terms of Summerset. Last years profits have been distributed up and down the coast. We are now assembling our Committee for this year. Please contact me if you are interested in being involved. If you know of any deserving children (maybe your Grandchildren) who could benefit from a Scholarship to the Edison Sailing Center Summer Learn-to-Sail Program, please contact our Grants Coordinator, Marla Parker at (MParker579@gmail.com). Beyond that we have updated the Sponsorship Opportunities by adding a couple new levels. You can check them out on the Summerset Website under 2019 Sponsorship Resources. Fair Winds, Allen Fiske CMCS VC of Summerset s/v Minimum Balance Rear Commodore of Cruising Report Rear Commodore Cruising Roy Malkin Let s begin with a recap the Edison Pageant of Lights Cruise. For those of you that couldn t attend. this event was Totally Awesome thanks to the planning and execution by Bev and Bob Duff, together with all those members who lent a helping hand. Legacy Harbour was a great venue. and their staff worked very hard to ensure that we had everything we needed. Fifteen boats signed up, the oysters were outstanding, and by the end of the Pot Luck well over 50 members had participated in the event. We all recognize what a significant asset Bev and Bob have been to the club for many years, and this year EPOL again exceeded everyone s expectations by a long way. Our first Cruise to Pelican Bay will begin on the 15 th of March through the 17 th. Glen and Paula Vetter (239) have volunteered to lead the event. Please click on the link Pelican to view all information and sign-up. A flyer is also attached. The following week, March 22-24, we will be heading to the York Island Anchorage (just off St. James City) for The Rum and Reading Cruise. Kim Brown and Judy Anderson (239) are our Cruise Leaders, and they are eager to coordinate the tasting of Fine Rums on Friday Night and the dingy ride to Woody s to spend the afternoon with Robert Macomber, learning about his new book. Please click on the link Rum to learn more about the Cruise opportunity and sign up. Kim s Flyer is also attached. In April, 4-9, Cruisers will be heading South to Panther Key and wherever else the wind may take you. AS OF YET, I DON T HAVE A CRUISE LEADER, SO PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER. Thanks in advance for your help. This trip gives us the opportunity to sail to a super location, and includes a flexible schedule to enjoy a number of anchorages both down and back. In the meantime, I will coordinate all details, just give me a call (763) with any questions. Please also click on the link Panther to sign-up. I have produced a preliminary Flyer which is attached. For Easter Weekend, April 18 th 22 nd. Theresa and Steve Roake will lead us, first to Pelican Bay for Happy Hour and the night, then on to Burnt Store for Saturday and Sunday. This is a wonderful opportunity to get together, celebrate Easter, and have lots of Fun. For more information and sign-up, please click on the link Easter. A preliminary flyer is attached. More information next month on the Bloody Mary and Danger Island Cruises. At our Member Appreciation Meeting, we announced a new program that would enable new members, and those current members who

5 CMCS Chowder Chatter March, 2019 Page 5 would like to brush-up on their Sailing Skills, the opportunity to do so. This training would consist of. a dinner, 5 hours of ground school and two full days of sailing. Please click on the link Sailing Skills to review the complete Syllabus. I was very encouraged to initially have six members express interest in participating in our first class. Please note that this program is being offered to CMCS members at no charge, and hopefully, will support the Club s initiatives to enhance the Cruising experience for all members. We also had a door prize drawing at the Cruising Table, and the winners are Julie Long, Bev Duff, Carol Pim, Sandy Canning, and Joan Blessing. I will bring your gifts to the next meeting. Lastly, I have attached copy of a Cruising Survey that I request that all members complete. By participating in this Survey, you will provide us with better direction on the Cruises and Training that we could offer in the future. You can fill out the Survey on-line by clicking on the link Cruising Survey. Thanks for your interest in Cruising. We had two boats new to racing with CMCS take first and second (Honour and Pepper) which is great. The more boats that we can get to participate the better. 6 CMCS Chowder Chatter March, 2019 Page 6 6 Take Action - Lake O During 2018 I got engaged to do something about our Lake O. Why? Because I reached a personal tipping point that I can t sit back and ignore what s happening around me anymore. Foul water, our water friends dying, algae, my favorite shrimp supplier from Deedee Cheek Matlacha not being able to go out and get my monthly supply of shrimp. Decimated livelihoods Charter boat and fishermen decimated livelihoods. And health issue became a reality. My tipping point was when I saw a man who was engaged with Lake O who wanted to protect his family from the toxins and make sure there was a safe and fun environment for his kids. Jason Pim. During the year I found out the Lake s problems are complicated which is a term used many times by Lake O advocates and I get it now. This may be old or new news but I d like to share some basic information I ve gleaned along the way. 1. Fixing our Water Woes is complicated and one has to look at it like a puzzle. There are many pieces to a puzzle, each independent but required to complete the picture. That s what we have to think of when we see or read about the legislatures and agencies involved in Lake O. SFWMD, one piece of the puzzle. US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), another piece of the puzzle as is Governor DeSantis and so on. Each is important to complete the puzzle but each has their own agenda and/or rules to follow and, depending on the agency, follow directives from one of the other Lake O Puzzle Members. 2. Sugar is not the only culprit; there are many other contributing issues that have collectively over the years got us to where we are now. This includes the area north of the lake. 3. We have advocates out there that include scientists, doctors, lawyers, environmentalists and people like us whose job it is to get the facts out to the public. Calusa Waterkeepers, Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF), Captains for Clean Water and many more. They work tirelessly to get the facts to the Lake O Puzzle Members and the public. 4. Water releases. The USACE is following their 2008 Lake Okeechobee Regulation Schedule (LORS) that manages Lake O s water levels and releases. We re all heard about this; they are not flexible and we know what can happen. SCCF has for years sent weekly reports to the USACE, SFWMD and Department of Environmental Protection giving them oodles of data and recommendations to assist in our SWFL problems. This report provides a scientific assessment of Caloosahatchee River and Estuary conditions and how these conditions affect the health, productivity and function of the system. This data typically falls on deft ears. 5. During 2018 I attended several advocate meetings and there s one common mantra I hear from all of them; THEY NEED US to Take Action by contacting the Lake O Puzzle Members and voice our concerns. During 2018 thousands have decided to get engaged by Taking Action and it s working. I also receive newsletters, alerts and FB posts which keeps me up to date on what s going on so I can Take Action when needed. WHAT can you do now? The USACE is gathering input (deadline 3/31) on a new manual, Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM) which is scheduled to be completed in The manual will provide guidance for managing lake levels for multiple purposes including protection of the lake s ecology, water supply for agricultural, urban and environmental uses, and discharges to the estuaries. They want to know: 1. What issues are important to you? 2. What study outcomes do you want to see? 3. How would you measure success? 4. What solutions would you like us to consider? To get you thinking here are a few key concerns that I addressed in my letter to them, and of course you ll have your own: The 2022 deadline is unacceptable. I want to see it in To please listen and pay attention to the independent scientists, doctors, lawyers and environmentalists who provide data to make the best recommendations. The new release schedule must be equitable for all stakeholders not just agricultural interests in the winter and spring. And here s where to send your comments! 8 CMCS Chowder Chatter March, 2019 Page 8 CMCS Pelican Bay Cruise March 15-17, 2019 Cruise Leaders: Glen & Paula Vetter Winter is over and we gather at a favorite anchorage here in Southwest Florida on the leeward side of Cayo Costa to celebrate. There will be Happy Hours on the beach and dinghy exploration opportunities. We can check out what treasures have washed up on the beach, go for a hike in the state park, or just lounge on deck reading a book. 8 Be prepared for one of Florida s best kept secrets by reviewing the Florida State Parks website. If you re new to Pelican Bay click here for the > Pelican Bay Chart (Created by Isle Yacht Club in 2003). This is a good tool but remember that the sands shift so things may be different today than they were then! Entry into Pelican Bay is not particularly difficult but caution is advised. Don t cut corners unless you re familiar with the anchorage! If this is your first time, talk to one of the club s many regulars for advice and assistance. Do not forget to bring some cash to cover the $2 per person per day donation to the Friends of Cayo Costa who unselfishly man most of the of the island s amenities. Also, write CMCS on your donation envelope so they know we continue to appreciate their efforts. Envelopes and payment box is at the dock. Or you can pay at the ranger station, which has some trail maps available PLEASE SUPPORT THIS WONDERFUL ASSET! Friday Evening: we ll gather at Dog Beach (a beach near the entrance on Punta Blanca Island) at around 5:00 PM. Bring your own drinks, and a snack to share. Saturday: can be spent: Visiting other boats in your dinghy Hiking Cayo Costa Renting a bike to pedal Cayo Costa Just Sitting on or walking the beach Hanging out with a good book Gather-up a group to dinghy down to the Tunnel of Love (Cheedix Cut) Tour the various hidey holes (e.g. Manatee Hole, School House Cove) Cabbage Key is a short dinghy ride for lunch Fix something that s broken on your boat (a favorite for some) Saturday Evening: gather again on Dog Beach for cocktails around 5:00 PM. Bring your own drinks, and snacks to share. Sunday: it s time to head home (or not!). Feel free to come early and stay late! If you want more information, please contact your cruise leaders (See contact information below.) We plan to monitor channel 72, so please hail CMCS on your marine radio upon arrival!

9 CMCS Chowder Chatter March, 2018 Page 9 CMCS Rum and Reading Cruise a/k/a Macomber Cruise March Cruise Leaders are Kim Brown & Judy Anderson Bob Macomber is putting out a book this year. Big whoop- he does this every year (almost). After making us drink our rum off Panther Key last year because there was no book, this year it is back to York Island. Old hands know the drill but Friday, March 22, the fleet anchors off York Island/St. James City unless the wind tells us this is a bad idea. If the wind is wrong for York, it is right for Sanibel Bight. Once secured at anchor the multitude will gather for Happy Hour. While we have had 30 on Trust Me!!!, it is a stretch so hopefully a larger boat will raise their hand to host. Bring a little something to pass and something to sip about 5P. At 6p the actual Rum tastings begin. You are welcome to bring your best sipping Rum. Even if you don t want to enter a bottle there will be a good selection. Each year we have done this competition the quality has gone up. Little shot glasses are passed out. Bottles are passed around. Tastings happen. There are winners, there are losers. Last year, there were 7 contenders (or was it 8- things got fuzzy early in the process). The quality was extremely high- not a loser in the bunch. Best as I can remember it went down like this- Metusalem (Peter Wake s favorite) was paired against Havana Club Maestro and lost. So the new Dominican version (Metusalem was Cuban before the revolution) didn t cut it against the real Cuban Havana Club Maestro s winner Zacapa 23 went down to El Dorado. The Goslings Black Seal (prize from Halloween Cruise) was relegated back to the Dark and Stormy category. In the end, the best sipping rum for 2018 went to Roake s bottle of Kirk and Sweeny 12 yr. It was very, very pleasant. The whole contest almost came crashing down with the passing of AirBoss XS Aperitif. Airboss has taken to converting regular rum to sipping rum by adding spices and then cask aging. Can t wait to see what they have stuck in the barrel this year. My we have talented people in CMCS. Saturday, March 23, dawns neither bright nor early. The dinghies start to wander up the Monroe Canal in St. James City to Woody s about 11a. The Book party runs from 12-5p. The formal title is: 15 th Annual Pine Island Reader Rendezvous with Robert Macomber. If you can t come by boat come by car. It is always a great party. Eating, drinking, music and a chance to buy a copy or two of Bob s new book Honoring the Enemy. Nancy will take your money/ credit card and Bob will sign your book though you can probably give Bob the money and get Nancy to sign the book if you want. When you have had as much fun as you can stand, dinghy back to your boat. There is nothing official planned for Saturday night but there is often some socializing after naps Sunday, you are on your own. Head home, catch breakfast at 8a at the Ragged Ass or hang around until 11a and dinghy into The Waterfront to complete your culinary tour of Pine Island. Since the Waterfront is the old school house, it ties nicely with the reading theme. We try to monitor 72 and we can be reached at Kim & Judy Trust Me!!! KimTrustMe@gmail.com 9
