2015 Lower Cowlitz River Rotary Screw Trap (CRST) 2016 Cowlitz River Fisheries and Aquatic Science Annual Conference Chris Wagemann - WDFW April 20, 2016

Presentation Overview Objectives Site Selection Trap Design, Installation & Permits Methods Preliminary Results Operation Fish capture numbers and biodata Trap efficiency Recommendations /Acknowledgements

Smolt Timing and Abundance Project Objectives Collect tissue samples from natural-origin (NOR) Chinook migrants proportional to their weekly outmigration to estimate adult Chinook abundance through genetic mark-recapture (GMR). Evaluate abundance of all NOR & HOR smolts but particularly focus on mark/recapture population abundance for Chinook as a key component to GMR.

Smolt Timing and Abundance Project Objectives Characterize juvenile migration timing and length distribution for HOR and NOR Chinook, coho, steelhead, cutthroat. Emphasis of 2015 trap operation will be to evaluate trap placement and position, release site locations that ensure adequate mixing of marked and unmarked fish, and appropriate mark types for each species.

Criteria CRST Site Selection Site selection was evaluated on river characteristics that would: Maximize trap proficiency Anchor/mooring potential at each site River accessibility (install, repair, access) Landowner agreements (ROE) Trap security

CRST Site Selection Potential Locations Five sites were identified approximately one mile apart 1) Olequa/Old Bridge Pier 2) Olequa Creek/Olequa 2 3) BNSF Train Trestle 4) Hog Island 5) Rock Creek

Potential Site Locations

CRST PERMITTING JARPA, 4(d), Access Agreements Joint Aquatic Resource Permit App (JARPA) Federal, State & County. Authorization & Permits for Protected Species 4d Rule Coverage Right of Entry (ROE) agreements w/ Ebersol & BNSF (moorage sites) and Hensley (trailer & CRST access ).

CRST Installation Trap Design The structure is 16-feet wide atop 40 foot long steel pontoons. Its tallest component is a 12-foot tall manual hoisting mechanism that moves the cone in and out of the water.

CRST Installation Trap Design/Construction The CRST consists of an 8-foot cone that has interior baffles which are supported by a metal frame.

CRST Installation Trap Design/Construction

CRST Installation The cone reaches approximately 4- feet below the surface of the water when lowered into position for fish collection.

CRST Installation

Amber hazard blinking lights at all four corners. Caution signs placed 200 meters upstream/downstream. Tacoma Power Notice / CRST Q & A signs upstream and downstream at boat ramps providing public/boaters of the location and function of the trap.

CRST Installation Anchor configuration: lifting strap with shackle holding one of the bow lines.

CRST Installation Lifting strap with shackle & deflection point holding one of the bow lines.

CRST Installation Challenges Boat Guard Trash Drum & Live box Riser Support & Reinforcement

2015 CRST Goals Catch and enumerate a portion (1-4%) of all downstream migrant salmonids. Externally mark all, or a portion of, the healthy maiden captured HOR & NOR migrants Release marked fish above the trap, and subsequent recapture to estimate trapping efficiency and abundance.

2015 CRST Goals Evaluate the trap location though frequent independent targeted release groups from Cowlitz Falls Fish Facility, Mayfield Migrant Trap and Cowlitz Hatcheries. Collect genetic and biological data (length, weight, scales, tags and fin clips) from a portion of the salmonid migrants captured.

CRST Methods Proposed Operation Schedule The goal in 2015 was to work towards operating 24/7 -depending on CRST and/or river conditions and fish presence. To understand day and nighttime movements, catch sampled twice daily, just after sunrise, and just before dark.

CRST Methods Trap Efficiency mark-recapture A mark-recapture study design was refined throughout 2015 CRST operation. Targeted number of recaptures per interval was 10 fish. Sample sizes for efficiency trials required all available/healthy migrants to be marked and released above the CRST. A marking rotation was used per interval. All salmonids were examined for a mark.

CRST Methods Smolt Biodata Fish were enumerated by Species Life stage Origin (HOR/NOR) Mark\tag types (i.e. CWT, PIT & Visual Implant Elastomer (VIE)). Biological data (length, scales from steelhead and Chinook > 70 mm FL) from a random subsample of up to 20 fish per species per day.

CRST Methods DNA Sample Collection Chinook NOR genetic samples were collected from 50% the fry and every parr/smolt and adjusted accordingly throughout the year as needed to acquire a minimum of 3,000 tissue samples. Tissue samples need to be representative and proportionally to NOR Chinook migrants.

CRST Operation Schedule Trapping commenced May 27th Days in/ Days out Typically scheduled trap checks are the exception during seasonal changes and periods of inclement weather.
