SUMMER NOTES 2013 COMMODORE MARVIN ABUGOV Dear Members: If you want to keep in touch with the club in-between newsletters (with thanks to Stuart Sherwin for creating and producing the club s formal newsletters for so many years!), one of the best ways is to subscribe to our Facebook page: members@sbyc. You get to it after registering in Facebook by using the Facebook search function. As such, we passed 50 subscribers this past week. Bragging rights go to our latest new member: Sylvia Ericson!... and as well to our most recent 51 st subscriber: Brandon Cook, Gil Cook s Grandson, who has now been designated as the Cook Family Trust representative to the SBYC Board (as per the SBYC Articles of Incorporation.) In addition, I m pleased to report that Past Commodore Barry Tonge has made great progress with the club s new website: It is now up and running. Please be sure to take a look see!. cont d on page 3

2 THE Wedding Congratulations Pat and Rena on starting your new journey together! Thank you for sharing it with all of us at the Sunshine Bay Yacht Club. It's hard to believe that in 30+ years this is the first wedding held at SBYC! And what a beautiful wedding, and setting, it was!!! It was mentioned that Pat and Rena tend to sail often in inclement weather, but for this celebration the clouds parted just over SBYC and they were blessed with blue skies and sunshine!! Pat and Rena have always had an infectious positive energy at the club and they certainly brought it, and more, to their wedding day. They both looked incredible (especially the Bride) and they certainly beamed like two teenagers in love! The band was awesome, and a great time was had by all. Inclement weather or not, it is our opinion, looking at how in love these two obviously are, it will be smooth sailing for them from here on!! Way to go!! Sylvia & Murray

3 MEDITERRANEAN MOORING Mediterranean mooring, also known as "med mooring" or "Tahitian mooring", is a technique for mooring a vessel to pier. In a Mediterranean mooring the vessel sets a temporary anchor off the pier and then approaches the pier at a perpendicular angle. The vessel then runs two lines to the pier. The advantage of Mediterranean mooring is that many more vessels can be connected to a fixed length of pier as they occupy only their width of pier rather than their length. The disadvantages of Mediterranean mooring are that it is more likely to result in collisions and that it is not practical in deep water or in regions with large tides. Having just spent a couple of weeks in Greece, Med mooring is definitely a best practiced art. It really boils down to correct placement of your anchor and lots and lots of chain rode. Stuart & Jenny DOWN UNDER DAY A TRUE BLUE SUCCESS Members got in touch with their inner bloke or sheila on Saturday, June 1 with Down Under Day, our way of showing new members the kind of camaraderie we have come to know and love at SBYC. The idea sprang from discussions I had over the years with fellow Aussie expats Keir Pearson and Ken Lane. Unfortunately, Ken passed before we could put thoughts to action, but we did toast his memory that evening. He's sorely missed. From letting themselves get temporary Aussie flag tattoos to tucking into lamb burgers and snaggers (sausages) to trying their hand at baking lamingtons, pavlovas and sticky date puddings, our members completely embraced the spirit of the day. Special thanks to John Stobbe, for sharing a treasure trove of Aussie balloons, stickers, mini-koalas, etc. Thanks, too, to those who dressed in Oz garb for the occasion. Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oy oy oy!

4 SUMMER NOTES cont d from front page 2013 COMMODORE MARVIN ABUGOV Now that we are at the height of the summer season, I m looking forward to all the fun that surrounds our annual Pirate Days event: Our costume extravaganza!, our kids activities!, the sail past with myself providing the Commodore s salute at the end of the EYC dock this year (be sure to wave back, o.k.?), and our annual dinner. Most sincere thanks to John and Avery Stobbe for chairing the team that is coordinating all the necessary details. (More thank you s from me to all the special event team members during the upcoming dinner.) Please take note that Brandon Cook mowed the grass along the Gil Cook / Cook Family Trust entrance road to permit parking for SBYC members, and for occasional overnight camping / large motor homes. Meanwhile, the SBYC Board has been busy dealing with a variety of new administrative matters that I need to let you know about. These are a first for the club, and the Board has had to make some challenging decisions: There was a time when there were more boat slips than members. As such, the board permitted a member, as a perk, to take their boat off the dock for half the season and then bring it back to the dock on August 1. Now that there are more folks wanting to join, than there are boat slips, this perk known as the split season can no longer be accommodated. The Board rescinded the perk at a special meeting held on June 22, The board wants as many boats at the dock as it is possible to have all season long! As members may recall, there are NO REFUNDS once you have paid your dues by the due date in April. If per chance, you should not be able to put your boat in the water, and you choose to provide a written request for a refund very soon after paying your annual dues, sorry, but it s going to be expensive! The Board will charge the current holding fee + $150 administration fee. A refund will then only occur if the Board can find someone else to rent your slip to which the above fees will be deducted. Then another issue arose concerning the sale of boats by Provisional Members to others on the Wait List or to those outside the club. This can certainly be done and is encouraged, but unlike the member perk where a member can sell a boat to a person on the wait list and the new owner instantly becomes a club member the Board determined that there will be no movement upwards on the provisional / wait list for the new owner. Everyone stays where they are on that wait list. Meanwhile, a new owner, from outside the club but who would like to join, does so at the end of the wait list. Finally, in the event anyone at the dock buys a new boat and then keeps their original boat to sell later, please be advised that there is only one boat slip allocated to either a member, a provisional member, or others on the wait list. In other words, one of the two boats must be removed from our docks within a few days. All these matters represent some long-term growing pains for the club -- all necessitated by lack of dock space. However, adding additional dock space is being hampered by the knowledge that our current lease agreement with the Cook Family Trust ends in As such, I am pleased to report that the Board has been working on a working draft of a new long-term lease agreement as originally requested two years ago by Landowner Gil Cook (Cook Family Trust), to take effect in the 2027 season. Talks have been ongoing between the two entities since then. It s been a real team-effort to determine the club s suggestions for how this extension might work. The Board hopes to give our version of the document to Gil this Fall. Meanwhile, there is no time-line for Gil s response. My thanks to Past Commodores Neil Herbst, Barry Tonge and the whole SBYC Board for expediting the development of the formal document this year. 5 SCOTCH TASTING Last year, Ian & Sabine Macleod hosted our club s first ever Scottish nite, complete with a Piper in full gear. They organized a terrific event that highlighted 14 different scotches, from the highlands to the Isles, many a fine drams were shared. Ian gave all an education on the malting process and an overview of the scotch distillery areas. Many who attended wore Scottish dress, a few red wigs, a few kilts and not enough clothing under those kilts. But, fortunately, everything stayed fairly tame. Look for notices on our bulletin board for Scotch 2013, coming to our club soon. FOR SALE Mamati is a 23 foot sloop designed by Dehler with a Kevlar hull reinforced with aluminum tubing connecting the keel and shrouds. The 7/8 fractional rigged mast is keel stepped. She has been sailed in fresh water her whole life. January 7 th, 2013 Our 23 foot Tempest O Day (1968 Serial #17467)) and Highliner Trailer (2009) is for sale. The boat is located in Edmonton Alberta Canada. The Tempest O Day was designed by Phillip Rhodes & is an excellent trailer launchable cruising sailboat. The large cockpit seats up to 8 people. The boat is a wonderful first boat that s easy to sail. It has been sailed at Lake Wabamum, Alberta since The boat has a fixed keel draft of 3.9 with a beam of 7.8 feet. A 2009 Marine Survey is available for review.
