Pressure on the outer system (bottle) increases pressure on the inner system (diver/pipette) which causes the density of the diver to incease and, therefore, displace less water within the diver and makes the diver sink. 16 Explain how viscosity relates to selecting materials in Ottensman 044 the design of a road. When designing a road, selecting materials that can withstand the load the road is expected to undergo is very important. It is also important to consider buckling and cracking due to freezing and thawing. Asphalt has a lower viscosity than concrete and will therefore not crack as readily as concrete. However, concrete is often used in roadways. To make up for its high viscosity and brittle behavior, joints are included. This allows for expansion and contraction of the materials.

Ottensman Atrium West Engineering Physics Gravity causes the parachute to fall, however the air resistance under the chute is so great, because the air molecules get stuck, that the force of the air resistance counterbalances the weight of the object attached to the parachute. Thus, the parachute and object that it is attached to fall at a steady speed. 34 Does the displayed truck have an Open Center or Closed Center hydraulic system? Can you explain the difference? Parking Lot 11 The displayed truck has a Closed Center Hydraulic system, also called Load Sensing system. 35 How would the cosine effect impact an Officer s ability to accurately detect the speed of vehicle with a radar unit? (i.e. what speed measurement will be more accurate -one taken with the target vehicle traveling straight away from or directly at the Officer versus a measurement taken with the target vehicle perpendicular to the Officer?) Parking Lot 11 The best measurement will be taken on a target vehicle which is traveling straight at or directly away from the Officer. A measurement taken at a 90 degree angle would basically yield a measurement that the vehicle was stationary. Our rule of thumb is that the cosine effect always benefits the speeder in that the
5 closer the angle of speed measurement is to 90 degrees, the slower the measured speed of the target vehicle will appear to be.
