5 Handling Deck Plates Don t make a deathtrap out of a deck plate! 1. Open plates should ALWAYS be protected by a barrier or guardrail AND clearly visible warning notices 2. Always replace opened plates IMMEDIATELY when you have finished work 3. Plates should always be refitted correctly, to prevent trips and falls

6 Hot Work Bright sparks? Ask questions! 1. Is it NECESSARY and is it SAFE? 2. Have you carried out a thorough RISK ASSESSMENT and obtained a PERMIT TO WORK, if necessary? 3. Have you taken all the right precautions cleared the work area? Equipment in a safe condition? Did you go back after the job and check for fire? You didn t? Who did?

7 Intervention Safety doesn t happen by accident! 1. Take RESPONSIBILITY for safety 2. If you see something unsafe, do something about it! 3. What s worse worrying about upsetting someone, or living with the consequences of ignoring something?

9 Out on Deck PPE: wear it it could save your day! 1. Wear a hard-hat, plus a chin-strap if fitted 2. Close or secure all open doors 3. Safety shoes should always be worn outside of the accommodation block they provide protection from slips, trips, and falls as well as from impact and crush injuries

10 Mooring Deck Safety The mooring deck is no place for rope tricks! 1. ALWAYS keep a lookout for yourself and your colleagues 2. NEVER stand in the bight of a rope 3. A bight isn t always immediately obvious never step over a line while handling it
