4 ED S LETTER DIVE IN I qualified as a scuba diver many moons ago. I was born much later than my other siblings, so was too young to do the scuba course when the rest of the family did. This also meant that I missed out on a few family trips to Sodwana, simply because I was too young to dive. So, the day I turned 13, I begged my parents for an Open Water course for my birthday, and they agreed. We lived in Joburg, and I did the training at a NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) agency. When the course theory and pool sessions were completed, it was time to apply my newly acquired underwater skills in a slightly larger body of water. Bass Lake is an old mining quarry near Henley on Klip, south of Joburg. The 23 m deep spring-fed pit doesn t offer the greatest diving experience you ll ever have; it s extremely low in visibility and, in any case, there s not much to see apart from a few wrecks that were dropped in and you guessed it some bass. Nevertheless, I passed the underwater tests and finally qualified as a diver, but it would be the last freshwater dive I d ever do. Sodwana, Mozambique, the Maldives and a few other saltwater diving destinations have been ticked off the bucket list, but I ve yet to do the ultimate freshwater dive: Lake Malawi. For now, all I can do is take vicarious pleasure in the accounts of other divers who ve been there, such as Fiona McIntosh s wonderful piece on page 32. We also have plenty for the landlubbers to sink their teeth into this month. Find a great weekend escape for Joburgers on page 14. Capetonians are spoilt with the number of attractions and activities in and around the Mother City, but this canopy tour (page 48) is one the thrill-seekers wouldn t want to pass up.
