4 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE MESSAGE 3320 Star Player for a Winning Season. 4 Leaders in many parts of the developing world are becoming increasingly concerned that food shortages will bring down their regimes. In these countries, political corruption, high taxes and poor infrastructure are tolerated by the masses. However, food shortages cause riots that can overthrow regimes. Because major grain production problems are continuing in many parts of the world in 2011, grain prices are at near record levels. This situation is providing farmers, who will be able to produce crops, with unprecedented income opportunities. Should any of the world s major exporting countries experience major production problems, who knows where grain prices could go? It is now becoming apparent that major grain production increases are going to be required to keep up with the increasing demand for grain used for fuel, animal feed, commercial products and human food. This will require the development of new technology in seed varieties, seed treatments, fertility and new herbicides, fungicides and pesticides. However, new, technologically advanced farm equipment will also be a fundamental element of a high production farming system. One such pieces equipment that offers farmers the potential to generate higher yields is the new Bourgault 3320 Paralink air hoe drill. With all other factors being equal and plant stand numbers being at or above the optimum levels, many years of cropping research has shown that maximum yields are produced when the number of days from when the first plants emerged to when the last plants emerged was within three or four days of each other. When the period of time from the emergence of the first plants to the emergence of last plants reached 9 or 10 days, often, 25% of the yield was lost. Although, there are many factors that can affect emergence, seeding depth is usually the most important factor. However, seeding depth is a factor that farmers can control. Soil moisture, packing rates, excessive and irregular residue cover, fertilizer toxicity, soil temperature, seed vigor and soil borne diseases are some of the other factors that can affect the time from when the first plants emerge to when the last plants emerge. However, if the seeding depth varies excessively, all of these other factors tend to magnify the problems created by variations in seeding depth. As such, obtaining uniform seed placement, at the optimum depth, is a fundamental and crucial factor. The new Bourgault 3320 PHD offers the most advanced seed placement technology in the industry. It will be available in three models: 3320 QDA, 3320 XTC and 3320 SE. The 3320, equipped with the QDA feature, will allow farmers to adjust the seeding depth in a few minutes, rather than taking up the major portion of an hour. Rather than adjusting the depth of each opener, because of the unique geometry found on the 3320 QDA adjusting the height of the frame, changes the seeding depth. Instead of a farmer spending 50 minutes to change the seeding depth of a 75-foot independent opener drill, the depth change will now take less than 4 minutes! When a farmer comes to a new field, if the soil type is different, often a small change in seeding depth is required to place the seed at the optimum depth. However, when it takes 50 minutes to change seeding depth to be able to see if a different depth is better and only 3 hours to seed the entire field, often depth changes are not made if the farmer feels that the depth is close enough. When compromises to seeding depth are made, if the seeding depth is too great, time-toemergence is increased and plant stands are reduced. If the depth is inadequate, some of plants may not emerge because they are stranded in dry soil, which can cause major problems with low plant numbers, time to maturity, weeds and ultimately, yield. The technology developed for the 3320 QDA allows a farmer not to have to make seeding depth compromises along with providing the most precise seed placement in the industry. Additionally, all 3320s feature hydraulically adjustable packing pressure, which is likely the second most important factor for obtaining proper emergence. In most years, the technology found on the 3320 QDA will increase yields, crop quality and reduce time-to-maturity resulting in a healthier bottom line. Bourgault is also offering an XTC version of the XTC is an acronym for extra Terrain Contouring. The 3320 XTC offers a 1:1 opener-to-packer wheel ratio, which allows for more accurate contouring in fields that have many sharp ditches, draws and hills. The 3320 XTC requires that each individual opener be adjusted to adjust the drill s seeding depth; however, Bourgault s designers have developed a unique system to make this adjustment quick and easy. All models of the 3320 can be equipped with the new MRBIII for safe application of all rates and forms of nitrogen fertilizer. You can add the optional soil-retaining wheel for improved furrow closing, which tends to provide the greatest benefits with NH3. YO U D O N T H AV E T O G O W I D E R Many farmers with competitors seeding systems are forced to deal with residue bunching and plugging, and the inevitable uneven crop emergence that results. There has been some who promote seeding with side-banding systems such as dual-knife or double-shoot openers on 12" rows or greater. Producers must be aware that side-band openers used on wider row spacings endanger the seedbed with excessive soil disturbance, reduced seedbed utilization, and increased risk of fertilizer damage, especially when used with variable rate control. As with the original, the Series 3320 PHD offers outstanding residue clearance in managed field residue. Features such as a seed-only opener on each shank, edge-on shank design, and residue cutting MRB coulters provide excellent trash flow in challenging conditions without having to compromise seedbed utilization for a wider row spacing. For every inch that the packer wheel moves, the seed opener will move ½". This feature dampens opener movement, providing consistent seeding depth even when seeding at an angle to last year s furrows, or through aggressive field residue such as corn stalks. 11 Q DA ( Q U I C K D E P T H A D J U S T ) PA R A L I N K H O E D R I L L The 3320 Quick Depth Adjust configuration is unique in the market, as it is the only independent depth drill that allows seeding depth to be changed easily and effectively. Similar to the 3320SE, the 3320QDA is equipped with PHD Seed Openers mounted on a durable and well-engineered frame. Where the 3320QDA sets itself apart is the incorporation of a frame height adjustment system, providing farmers with the ability to adjust seeding depth with speed and convenience never expected with an independent depth seeding system. The 3320QDA frame is hydraulically adjusted. Its adjusted position is maintained with a shim assembly. Hydraulic/shim assemblies are located on both the QDA's front caster wheels and rear carrier wheels. Air Hoe Drill - A traditional air hoe drill has openers fixed to the frame, with the front caster wheels and packer gangs at the rear connected with linkages. The producer needs only to set the operating height of the drill frame to achieve desired seeding depth. Current Independent Hoe Drill - Seed openers move independently of the frame, and the caster wheels in the front and rear frame carrying wheels are fixed to the frame. To change the seeding depth, the operator needs to expend the physical and time requirements to adjust every opener on the machine. I M P O R TA N C E O F C O R R E C T S E E D I N G D E P T H Every farmer knows that achieving the right seeding depth for the given crop and current conditions is critical for optimal germination. The challenges of setting an independent depth seed drill encourages producers to find a close-enough seeding depth that will provide adequate, not ideal results for most situations. Bourgault recognized this trend as a detriment to the producer's bottom line, and strove to offer a better solution. The result is the 3320QDA, the only independent hoe drill with convenient and effective seed depth setting. H O W I S Q U I C K D E P T H A D J U S T P O S S I B L E? This feature is made possible by the 2-to-1 contouring ratio of the PHD Seed Opener Assembly. A change in frame height will produce a change of half as much in seeding depth. To capitalize on this, the 3320QDA is equipped with a hydraulic cylinder and shim assembly on each front caster wheel and rear carrier wheel. To set the seed depth at the frame, these cylinders are extended to lift the frame, and shims are rotated in or out of position. Once the shims are set, the cylinders are retracted back into operational position. The 3320QDA provides ten shims, each shim equals 1 /8" of seed depth adjustment for 1¼" of total quick depth change range. Seeding depth can still be set on the PHD Seed Opener Assembly to achieve the optimal location for best use of the quick depth range, and for adjustment of individual openers that operate in wheel tracks. Frame height adjustments will affect the operational depth of the MRBIIIs by a factor of two in comparison to the seed openers, as they are fixed stationary to the frame of the 3320QDA. A ¼" change of seeding depth for the opener will produce a ½" depth change for the MRBs. Change in depth for the MRBs is typically not as critical as with seed openers, but should still be realized by the operator. Although small grains are adapted to a wide range of climates and soils, they are sensitive to various agronomic and environmental conditions, including temperature, rainfall, humidity, sunlight, fertility, herbicide carryover, insects, and diseases. Unfortunately, factors such as rainfall, humidity and sunlight are beyond our control, and Mother Nature proved this in 2010 with significantly higher than average moisture conditions and over-all lower temperatures than average. So far, 2011 is looking to provide much of the same. When considering the factors we can control, there is an opportunity to boost soil fertility for maximum yield potential when moisture is not the limiting factor. Caution must be give to the placement strategies for that fertilizer when optimizing for yield. The negative effects of nitrogen fertilizer toxicity and subsequent damage on an emerging crop being amplified by excessive heat & drought are fairly well documented and understood. In cool, wet conditions, the blame for poor crop development is often hung squarely on the shoulders of Mother Nature alone. However, 2010 revealed that even in wet conditions, fertilizer placement plays a significant impact on crop development and ultimately yield. Mark Keating, who farms near Russell MB, observed this firsthand. Mark split the seeding duty for his 2010 canola crop between a Bourgault 5710 equipped with side-banders and a Bourgault 5810 equipped with Mid Row Banders. Both were set up to deliver the same rate of anhydrous ammonia as the nitrogen source. As in many areas, the Russell area experienced significantly higher than average rainfall throughout the growing season. As the season progressed, the crops seeded with the side-band openers produced plants of smaller stature, while the mid row banded side bu/acre Odessa Canola N, 1" side-band I I I I 100 N, 2" side-band 100 N, 3" side-band 100 N, Mid Row Band TREATMENT produced faster growing, more vigorous and healthy looking plants. Bourgault MRBs Canola root comparison Russell, MB Competitor s Side-banders Bourgault s 2010 plot trials supported this observation. The canola yield trial at test plots near Odessa, Saskatchewan, which also experienced significantly above average moisture conditions showed that as nitrogen placement moved away from the seed row, yield steadily improved. All trials included 14 lb of actual sulfur with N in the side-band, and 20 lb of phosphate with the seed. The Odessa canola results indicate that a MRB seeding system would be beneficial to maximize yield with nitrogen rates of 100 lb/acre or greater. Similar results have been observed in 70 lb/acre trials as well. Mother Nature will continue to throw stressors our way, but by managing your fertility program with Mid Row Banders you can minimize the cumulative effect of stress under dry or wet condition to produce the highest possible yield in all growing conditions. w w w. b o u r g a u l t. c o m

When fully loaded, the 7950 can weigh up to 99,000 lb. so compaction is kept down by the use of large 850/80 R38 tires. The Bourgault spring trip cushion design utilizes increasing force geometry, allowing the Bourgault air hoe drill to be effective where competitor s systems just ride on top of the ground. Bourgault spring trip assemblies will outlast competitors by a factor of two or more. Should maintenance be required, the trip assembly can be refitted easily, safely, and economically using common tools. The construction has been optimized for the 5810 AHD to increase durability. The 4-½" packer has a ¼" thick steel cap, the 3-½" packer has a 3 /16" thick steel cap, while the 2-¼" has a 7 gauge cap.
