1 Technical Data Sheet ISONATE M 125 Diphenylmethane Diisocyanate General Description ISONATE TM M 125 is a white to light yellow crystalline solid (below melting point) of high purity and low acidity, containing approximately 97% 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and 3% 2,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate. ISONATE M 125 is used in applications where its di-functionality and low acidity can advantageously yield totally linear thermoplastic urethane elastomers and elasto-plastic products. Together with longer chain polyethers, polyesters, or other polyols, high performance polymers may be compounded in a wide range of hardness for such applications as microcellular elastomers, coatings, adhesives and sealants. 3 Safety Considerations for ISONATE M 125 isocyanate Safety Data Sheet [SDS] for ISONATE TM isocyanate is available from The Dow Chemical Company. SDS is provided to help customers satisfy their own handling, safety and disposal needs, and those that may be required by locally applicable health and safety regulations. SDS sheets are updated regularly. Therefore, please request and review the most current SDS before handling or using any product. Copies of the SDS are available on request through your nearest Dow Sales office. Toxicity Harmful by inhalation. Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. May cause sensitisation by inhalation and skin contact. Avoid breathing vapour or mist. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, or clothing. Always wear chemical goggles. Wear a mask or respirator of a type approved by local government and public bodies. If handled indoors, provide mechanical exhaust ventilation. During spray operations, airline masks or positive pressure hose masks should be worn because of the high concentration of isocyanate mist in the atmosphere. OELs (Occupational Exposure Limits) have been set for MDI in most countries. The atmospheric levels should be maintained below the exposure guidelines. Wear protective clothing, overalls, boots, apron and gloves. Handling and Storage Store in a dry place at 0 to -20 C, or as a melt, at 43 C ± 2 C Keep container closed as moisture contamination will induce an exothermic reaction with evolution of CO 2 which may cause dangerous pressure generation. Caution Polyurethanes produced from this product may present a fire risk in certain applications if exposed to fire and/or excessive heat, e.g. welding and cutting torches, in the presence of oxygen or air. Drum Storage As with all isocyanates, ISONATE M 125 must be protected against reaction with atmospheric moisture. Drums should be emptied, if possible, via a totally enclosed system (dip-tube technique or equivalent), taking care to blanket the drum and receiver with dry nitrogen. ISONATE M 125 also will slowly dimerise with time. Low levels of dimer (e.g. 0.6% 0.8%) at 43 C do not appreciably affect either the performance or appearance of ISONATE M 125, however, above this level, the diisocyanante becomes cloudy and the elastomeric products derived may be adversely affected. Dimer formation is least in ISONATE M 125 (in a solid state) at the lowest possible temperature. However, storage temperatures between 0 C and -20 C have found to be acceptable and practically feasible. As a molten product, the dimerisation rate is lowest at 43 C (just above the melting point at 37 C min.). Of primary importance is the fact that wide fluctuation of temperature (uncontrolled temperature storage) at any level, will result in exceedingly high dimer formation. Melting Dimer formation is of primary consideration when considering the melting procedure for ISONATE M 125. The recommended technique is drum rolling (5 10 RPM) in atmospheric steam. This method provides for efficient heat transfer while the solid block of frozen ISONATE M 125 cools the liquified portion, so that the product temperature never reaches a high enough level (>60 C) to cause excessive dimerisation. A less satisfactory method is static melting in a steam chest. Another slower technique (and not always a satisfactory method) involves rolling the drums in hot air. 4 This can only be considered, however, as a temporary measure until the recommended equipment above can be installed. As can be seen, agitation and subsequent quick but even heating is the key to ISONATE M 125 quality maintenance during melting. Static melting in hot air ovens is not recommended. Bulk Storage Experience has shown that the bulk storage and transport of ISONATE M 125 can be an extremely attractive method of assuring dimer control (no-melting) and maintaining high quality liquid product. APPROX. STORAGE LIFE OF ISONATE M 125 PURE MDI AT VARIOUS STORAGE TEMPERATURES Temperature Storage Life C (Days) 1,2, See note Storage life is taken as the period of time during which the product can be melted to a clear liquid by melting procedures recommended. 2 Storage life includes the average storage time at Dow plant or warehouse. 3 Storage life of solid pure MDI is not valid when shipped in non-temperature controlled vans. 4 Temperature ranges between 10 C and 37.8 C give the highest dimer growth. Fire and Explosion Spills and Disposal Isocyanates will burn but do not ignite easily. In the event of a fire, toxic vapours and decomposed material are likely to be present. Suitable fire extinguishing agents include water fog, carbon dioxide, or dry chemical powder. All fire fighters should be equipped with protective clothing and a positive pressure, self-contained breathing apparatus. Drums of isocyanate involved in a fire should be sprayed with water to minimise the risk of rupture. However, water contamination in a closed container or a confined area is to be avoided due to exothermic CO 2 evolution upon water contamination. In case of spills, evacuate and ventilate the spill area. Only properly trained and protected personnel should be involved in the spill clean-up and waste disposal operations. Spills can be covered with a commercial absorbent or sand, shoveled into open, properly labeled containers and removed from the work area for decontamination. A suitable decontaminant solution is described in the SDS, section 6. Waste disposal of isocyanates should always be in accordance with national and local regulations. 5 First Aid Procedure Customer Notice Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, oxygen should be administered by qualified personnel. Call a physician or transport to a medical facility. Obtain medical attention immediately. Effects may be delayed. Skin contact: Remove material from skin immediately by washing with soap and plenty of water (warm water is preferable if readily available). Remove contaminated clothing and shoes while washing. Seek prompt medical attention if irritation persists. Eye contact: Flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes. Get prompt medical attention. Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting if swallowed. Immediately call a physician who will decide on need and method for emptying the stomach.
