22 MORE INFO EYE PROTECTION How to choose Eye Protection: It is extremely important to assess hazards at work before choosing eye or face protection. The Australian Standard AS/NZS1336 provides guidelines for the selection, care and use of eye protection products. UniSafe recommends that all eye protection products used in the workplace should meet the requirements of the Australian Standard AS/NZS All staff should be trained on the correct use of safety equipment. Typical hazards found in the workplace include: Low Velocity particles - Use spectacles, goggles or face visors. Splash - Use goggles or visors. Medium Velocity particles - Use spectacles, goggles or face visors. Gaseous - Use goggles. High Velocity particles - Use full face visors and spectacles must be worn. Non-lonising Radiation - Use goggles or visors. UV Protection All UniSafe safety spectacles provide 99.9% UV protection (up to 385nm) and carry the AS/NZS 1337 StandardsMark certification for medium impact or low impact protection. The clear and amber lenses are marked as outdoor untinted (marked O) lens and can be used for indoors or outdoors when the wearer is not subjected to uncomfortable glare from the sun. Different functions require different shades of safety spectacles. For example, forklift drivers that are operating in loading bays may find that using a lighter tint with a reflective coating enables them to see clearly both indoors and outdoors. Spectacles approved to AS (sunglasses standard) are not tested for impact requirement and are unsuitable for safety eye wear. Safety spectacles for use in the workplace should be approved to AS/NZS The AS/NZS1337 standard refers to the AS standards and has the same testing requirements for sun glare and solar radiation. HEAD PROTECTION Important Information on Hard Hats Before choosing a hard hat or bump cap, it is important to assess the hazards. Where there is a danger from a falling mass, safety helmets should be used. Use bump caps when there is a risk of bumps or scrapes occuring. UniSafe safety helmets are approved to AS/NZS1801. Bump caps do not have an Australian Standard. AS/NZS 1801 recommends that head harnesses be replaced every two years. As specified in AS/NZS 1801, safety helmets have a recommended life of up to 3 years from date of issue (not manufacture) depending on how they are used and treated. Weathering damage and shell discoloration are all signs that a safety helmet shouid be replaced. The use of solvents, marker pens, insect repellent and paint can also affect the strength and effectiveness of a safety helmet. It is the responsibility of the wearer to check the safety helmet on a regular basis. High visibility ABS safety helmets were designed for use in low light areas such as forests or underground. In full sunlight, the life of these ABS fluorescent safety helmets may be reduced. We recommend that high visibility polycarbonate helmets are most suitable for outdoor usage in full sunlight. All staff should be trained on the correct use of safety equipment. Cushions should be wiped clean at the end of each day. Wash cushions and foam liners in warm soapy water at least once a week.
